Expected better. Â We were so excited to come for afternoon tea but in the end we were utterly disappointed. Â We were not greeted by anyone, no one seemed to know what to do with us and we had a 1:00 reservation. We were seated by the fireplace but it looked like no one has swept/vacuumed in awhile. Â Afternoon tea was not worth the money - the tea is your choice of a tea bag and a small pot of hot water. Â The sandwiches were ok but nothing special and the scones looked and tasted like Pillsbury Grands biscuits. Â The only good thing I can say about the experience was that the Doris Day memorabilia was fun to look at.
Review Source:I can't remember if I reviewed Terry's or not. But here goes - YUM YUM YUM. Thank you to my friends at The Lamplighter Inn for suggesting we have dinner here. Two nights in a row still wasn't enough. The lamb lollipops, the sand dabs, the fabulous cocktails, the excellent service, the outdoor ambience, and you're dog-friendly to boot! Thanks so much for two really terrific meals while we visited Carmel.
Review Source:My wife took me to dinner here last night for my birthday. Â We enjoyed a solid meal in a very comfortable room with very good service. Â It was a Tuesday night, and the dining room was fairly quiet.
For appetizers, the oysters were very fresh, and the beet salad with goat cheese was also quite nice. Â For my entree, I had the porterhouse - which was 20oz. of nicely prepared beef. Â Â For dessert, the bread pudding, which I would highly recommend.
I'm taking them down a notch because my entree was delivered in the warm to very warm range. Â Nothing was hot. Â The steak arrived very warm, but the mashed potatoes and the accompanying vegetables were just warm.
The staff were all very cordial and welcoming.
For a hotel, this restaurant is very solid. Â However, it could use just a bit more sparkle to put it over the top.
As others note, the Cypress Inn is dog friendly. Â However, dogs are not allowed in the dining room, so if you're not in to dogs, there's no need to worry...
Steve the bartender is the absolute worst!!! Â I brought in a group of 27 people for drinks on a Sunday night after my wedding reception thinking Terry's Lounge would appreciate our business. Â I was wrong. Â We were treated like we were bothering them and God forbid you ask Steve for a drink menu. Â He'll tell you repeatedly "I can't find it". Â I can't find it? Is there only one drink menu in the entire place? What a jerk! Â And the way he spoke to my new bride was insulting! Never will I go back to Terry's Lounge as long as Steve is still working there.
Review Source:We were very excited to bring our new addition "puppy" to Cypress. Â We will not be returning as all the hype about this place is wrong! Â Terry's Lounge staff was aweful! Â Jossie the supposed server, was so unfriendly and helpful, we had to flag her down and practically beg for her to take our order. Â To top it off.... a cranky old man with a cranky old dog came in and was serviced immediately with a cup of coffee & water for his dog. Â We had to ask for water for ours. Â His dog bit our puppy on the nose and no one had the decency to ask if she was OK. Â What a joke this place is....looks like they are just resting on their laurels taking advange of what Doris Day buildt. Â So sad!
Review Source:Stopped in for a glass of wine to relax after shopping. Â The bartender asked what I wanted when I sat down, got it, then was ignored the rest of the time there. Â Even made eye contact with the manager SEVERAL times and not even a hello. Â He was to busy hitting on the blonde server that was totally out of his league! The blonde at least was nice and got me ice when I stopped her and asked. Â I realize it was 4 and probably shift change but this place left me with no desire to return and marked off the list for our visitors to go to too. The only reason for two stars is that they allow dogs.
Review Source:This is the first place I go to when I arrive in Carmel. Â I've not had a meal here but always hang out on the patio by the fireplace and have wine and appetizer or tea service. Â the staff is friendly, the dogs are amusing and the crowd is always fun to chat with. Â Great, clean atmosphere.
Review Source:2pm - Come on guys ! 15 minutes we sat at the bar while a new barman struggled to make cocktails and couldn't serve us even though the place was hardly full. Meanwhile plenty of other staff just ignored us. No stars guys if I could give you for that. Left to find a better bar. I love your dog policy but not when you're treating them better than us !
7.30pm - But then - for some reason we passed here at night and heard wonderful music coming out of the place. A pianist called Gennady and Debbie on vocals. That guy can really play piano. The bar service this time was very sharp. All in all a fantastically entertaining couple of hours in there. Obvious Lesson - people can make a real difference in the way that your business is perceived.
This is a very cool place. Has a mellow rat pack decor in the lounge area where we ate. The prices are very reasonable for Carmel. The portions are also what I'd normal. Many restaurants, Carmel and elsewhere have ridiculously large portions. This was refreshing! The Moroccan chicken was excellent. The Old Fashion was just right. The dessert selection is a bit limited, but we enjoyed what we ordered. Didn't find the waiter super personable, but the hostess was very accomodating given we had no reservation. The outdoor eating areas looked very inviting..dogs lounging under a number of tables. I imagine this hotel to be a great romantic getaway and have made a note of that.
Review Source:Perhaps because I get into a rut and go the same places over and over, it seems all the new spots I try lately have just been so good and so fun.
I'd been here once before a few years ago and remember it being nice. Â It's dog-friendly even inside the lounge.
Anyway, yesterday was fun. Â I arrived early and it was about a quarter full. Â I sat outside with a Carmel Road Pinot Noir. Â It was a nice sunny day and I sat and did some work on my iPad. Â I'm trying to find all the spots that do it because I cancelled my At&t 3G which was $15 for a paltry 250 mb. Â
The service is casual, and friendly yet professional. Â
Doris Day was blasting over the speakers (at least I'm assuming it was her).
I moved inside to the bar when I was ready to eat. Â I'd read about a menu change and remodel, but really didn't notice anything radical. Â Even though it's been years since I've been here, I've seen the website. Â So i asked, and it's all about the drinks--- Â Old-fashioned, or classic style drinks.
To start with I ordered the split-pea soup, their soup of the day. Â It was pretty smooth. Â It's a basic dish and they stuck with the program. Â Then I had the crab mango salad. Â It definitely trumps Domenico's and is cheaper. Â This is straight crab meat. Â It looks small but it is all meat with some refreshing flavors.
By the time I ordered dinner, the place was packed outside and SRO at the bar. Â
Of course, before I left, I had to try a specialty cocktail. Â I went with the Clover Club. Â It was not too sweet and not too strong. Â
I'll be back for happy hour -- 15% off apps and drinks, and maybe High Tea. Â Friendly bartenders and it's fun to chit-chat with other customers. Â A couple was bar-hopping and going to Il Fornaio next but I sent them to Vesuvio.
I'm thinking of trying the short ribs next. Â I didn't see anything Moroccan on the menu, except for a chicken sandwich.
I made a reservation for lunch on Sun. May 6, 2012 for a party of 9. My family wanted to get together for lunch to honor my deceased dad's birthday. we never ate at Terry's Lounge and thought this would be a nice time to go there. The man who made our reservation on Sat. May 5th, said we will have the day room upstairs reserved and ready at 12 noon...May 6th for lunch. We were all looking forward to our visit to Carmel (a two hour drive) and eating at Terry's Lounge. Well, we were very disappointed when our lunch day arrived. None of the girls there knew of our reservation let alone have our table ready. The place was not busy when we were there...so they set up a table. The wrong table...we wanted the day room not the bar room..so, after more waiting, they finally got that table ready in the day room. (the day room was not even in use)
After waiting for some time our waitress finally came....she seemed very confused and out of it. We all had to ask for water. When we ordered our drinks she neglected to bring my daughters drink so 20 minutes later we reminded her of that. She finally took our lunch order and we waited for over 1/2 hour for our lunch and the waitress brought a wrong dish and forgot another. My 83 year old mom  and my brother did not get their lunches until about 10 minutes after the rest of us got ours. Then the waitress was going to change my brothers order...a change he did not ask for.My niece had to find the waitress and told her not to change that order.  The waitress said she got our order mixed up with another table . When  we were finished with lunch,  our waitress never came back with the check...so we got up went to the bar and waited for the check. Sadly , a large gratuity tip was included in the final bill...with this poor service, if given a choice, I would never have left such a large tip. We were at Terry's Lounge for over 2 hours for lunch. most of that time was waiting for service.
The food was good but the service was awful I will never go there again to eat or recommend this restaurant to any of my friends or family. Â we were very much disappointed.
TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!!
I came to Terry's Lounge on Sunday afternoon (May 6, 2012) for lunch with my family - it was our first time to the Doris Day hotel so we were all looking forward to it.
We made reservations a few days before, went to check in and the staff had no idea what we were talking about, they said it was a "busy morning" (place was nearly empty). It took about 10 minutes for them to seat us at a table which should have been a pre cursor to the whole dinning experience. The waitress was slow, kept mixing up our orders, brought us the wrong orders, didn't bring out everyone food at the same time - about a 10 minute gap from when the first meal was brought to the table to when the last was finally brought - and never brought out a few drinks ... over all terrible service but the food was okay. I will never go out of my way and drive 2 hours to this place again!
After being "louded out" of the Mission Ranch Restaurant (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/mission-ranch-carmel#hrid:-pmjVoodZ46_GO2HPiDRZw">http://www.yelp.com/biz/…</a>), we came to Terry's Lounge. It's dog friendly in the outer bar area. Your pooch can't come into the main dining room proper, though.
Terry's is in the Cypress Inn and has an "Old World Charm." They have a nice cocktail list arranged by the type of base alcohol (5-6 per booze).
We enjoyed a light dinner of Beet Salad, Beef Barley Soup, and Dungeness Crab Cakes. Everything we tried was well prepared. The crab cakes were mostly crab meat with a few red and green peppers. The beet salad had some goat cheese was nicely / lightly dressed.
Service was a bit slow and it looked like our waiter had tables in different areas of the restaurant.
This is a great spot for tourists and locals. You'll meet nice people from all over the world in the "livingroom" ( I met my wonderful boyfriend here last June!) Very old Hollywood and cozy at the same time. Strolling in on a foggy evening and sipping a martini by the fire is such a treat. The food is great, and the service is wonderful.
I would like to see some different entertainment in the livingroom from time to time, the old "standards" start to feel a bit too standard.
If you're not a dog lover you might be surprised, dogs are everywhere, although well mannered. We just love it!
Thank you Doris!
I was pleasantly surprised by the food, drink and service at Terry's Lounge. And though the ambiance was a bit retro, it was very colorful (speaking figuratively) and enjoyable. I didn't know what to think about the "small plates", but it turned out, in my mind, to be "entrees in reasonable portions".
We started by sharing the cream of broccoli soup and the beet salad. The soup was unique, smooth and of a satisfying portion. The beets were chopped into small cubes and served as a scoop of red/yellow beets over lettuce with a dollup of tasty goat cheese and a flavorful vinaigrette.
She had the crab cake appetizer for her entree, and I had the sand dab small plate. There were three small crab cakes served with a chutney sauce. Fresh-tasting crab meat, crispy on the outside, and a good combination with the chutney. I got three halves of very meaty sand dab fillets with a yummy tarragon sauce. After the appetizers, I couldn't finish the "small" plate!
Overall, the meal and dining experience itself was very good. We were seated promptly, and the service was very friendly and attentive. As noted earlier, the decor is a bit retro, and it's not the "happening" place in Carmel, so you don't get great people-watching (hence, 4, not 5, stars), but we'll almost certainly return.
Me and 3 girlfriends stopped by for the prix fix menu during restaurant week. Â We were excited and the menu looked great. Â We ordered the following items:
Apps...
-Beet Salad - Yum
-Pita Bread appetizer with (3) dipping sauces - pretty good
-Calamari- VERY GOOD
For dinner...
-Ahi Tunu- VERY GOOD
-Burger with 1/2 garlic fries & 1/2 Sweet potato fries - pretty good.
Dessert..(huge disappointment)
-Creme Brulee - overcooked with curdled eggs
-Bread Pudding Muffin - inedible with a flan/watery texture
-Hazelnut Gelato - Yum
Our drinks were delicious---a lemon drop and some go-to wine selections. Â The service was okay, until the end where it felt like we waited forever.
I would def. give this place another try...but wasn't over the top impressed, it was just "A-OK"
Went with the BFF after a day in Carmel.
She had been here before for drinks but it was my 1st time.
We walked in the patio side and not the hotel side. There is outdoor seating with nice lounge chairs by a fireplace and some tables for eating. Don't be surprised to find a guy carrying a small dog in what I call a doggy bjorn. Very dog friendly. The inside is very old school with people playing dominos surrounded by prints of Doris Day movie posters. I didn't see any dogs in there though.
We ordered the hamburger to share and it was pretty tasty. Our server was great and brought both food and beverage menus. She were nice enough to split  the hamburger for us so there was no issue in counting how many fries we each get.
The burger was really good and the garlic fries just added to the nice flavor. The drinks were a little pricey for my cheap self so I ordered a beer. Beer goes better with burgers anyways.
Went there for dinner on 4/16/11. Â I was excited about the patio seating and the friendly dog atmosphere. Â My 9 year old lab was happy as can be BUT the food was less than good. Â Service was good but food was bland. Â I got the hamburger and it was dry and tasteless. Â The garlic fries were alright but not great. Â Overall the best thing this place has going for it was that it was dog friendly.
Review Source:what a great find in Carmel. The live music on weekends is a lot of fun and the setting is relaxed. The singer was great and her accompaniment on the piano was first rate. Unusual place in that the singer sometimes has to compete with the bark of dogs in the lounge. It makes for a great setting. Sit back in the overstuffed sofas and enjoy!
Review Source:Classy and comfortable lounge in Carmel. Â Beautifully decorated with tributes to Doris Day (a co-owner of the Cypress Inn where the lounge is housed) all over.
Story goes, that Doris (an animal rights activist) wanted a place that people could comfortably visit and stay at with their animal companions. Â Hence the animal friendly policy at the hotel and lounge. Â
Note: there is a "no-pet" section for those who only want to rub elbows with humanoids (though I did see some two-legged animals sitting at the bar when I went).
Trivia: I think this place is named after Terry Melcher (Doris Day's son).  There's lots to the story...for the scoop, you can read here: <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FTerry_Melcher&s=b11e974f814588d7bff43bfee9337ae241ddee7008c941f67ce8220bd597cdbb" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://en.wikipedia.org/…</a>
Hosts don't get more wonderful than Denny.
Terry's Lounge is beautiful and dog-friendly. Â Is there a better combination? Â I love dogs, and the people who are closest to me are pretty sick of hearing me exclaim, "Look at how cute that dog is!". Â Anyway, this lounge sends me in to overdrive, every time.
Whether or not you have dogs or like dogs, this is a great bar. Â Half of the bar allows dogs, and the other half does not. Â The Moroccan theme is carried out to perfection, and you can be as social or withdrawn as your little heart desires.
While we mostly go for drinks, we have had the food once or twice. Â Denny challenged us to determine whether or not we had ever eaten a more delicious burger, and the outcome was one for two. Â But, it was a fantastic burger, and I feel confident suggesting you try it.
I am always happy about visiting Terry's Lounge, and I think you will be, too!
My mom lives in the area, and we hadn't been to the Cypress Inn for years. We went this afternoon for high tea with Asta, my 1 year old shih tzu.
What a delightful afternoon! The place was packed with people enjoying an afternoon break from post-Christmas shopping, and dogs settled in to watch their cousins. Big dogs, small dogs, all well-behaved (except for the yappy chihuahua).
We ordered high tea. I have to say, it was the best I've had in the US. Real tea sandwiches on light brown bread with the crusts cut off - these are not mongo sourdough monstrosities stuffed with a whole package of deli meats, but rather delicate, light fare - just enough to take the edge off of your hunger. The scones were amazingly good! Again, not American monstrosities, but light tasty scones. I was a bit disappointed in the clotted cream - it was more like whipped cream, but you can't have it all. delicious cookies, and a properly made pot of tea.
I am so happy to have rediscovered it, and that all my family members are welcome - including Asta.
We wandered into this restaurant (at the Cypress Inn) on the recommendation from a stranger who overheard us wondering if there was anywhere to eat with our dog on the chilly evening (many patios were closed). Â It was a dream come true:
* most tables had a calm dog or two under foot
* service was friendly and patient
* indoor seating with patio heaters
* outdoor seating with live music
* not one but TWO vegan items on the menu
Great for dinner, great for a post-beach beer and nibbles (ask for the complimentary "bar snacks"). Â Oh and they also have a great looking tea service. Sigh....
We came here two nights in a row because we liked it so much.
First, the ambience is great because the Cypress Inn is an older hotel with a lot of character. Picture stucco walls, tile floors and lounge furniture in the bar area.
Second, there are dogs everywhere! If you don't like dogs then stay away from here (and Carmel in general). We love dogs and were missing ours so we were pleased to pet a few while at the bar. The staff obviously loves dogs too because they walked around talking to them and helping corral the dogs who were off leash and wanted to wander.
The food and drinks are both reasonably priced and the portion sizes are huge. They offer both small and large plates and the large plates are heaping so you better be hungry if you order one.
The servers were all very friendly and attentive so we felt very much welcome and at home. This doesn't feel at all like your typical boring hotel bar.
We will definitely go back if we're ever in the area again.
I'm a beer drinker, so three stars is about as high as a place can go when a place doesn't have beer taps and I'm forced to think about ordering a mix drink. I had a gin and tonic. The girlfriend had a Maker's Mark. Total: $23.00, which is fairly reasonable for mix drinks in a vacationy kind of town.
The atmosphere is what makes this place, as it's always interesting to look up from your drink and see a poodle sitting on the bar stool next to you. This is pretty much made possible by the fact that the dogs are generally more well-behaved than their masters.
I'd go back if I was in the mood for something other than beer. I'd probably take my mom there as well, as all of the Doris Day (owner of the establishment) movie posters on the wall took me back to the days of one TV and being forced to watch Pillow Talk over and over again.
A great place for BOTH dogs and people. Â The people who work there make the place. Â Thora is possibly the best bartender in town. Â Mary is a server extraordinaire! Â Often you'll see Denny LeVette, who co-owns the hotel with Doris Day, and is a wonderful host. Â Tuesday is "Local's Night," when you'll find a lower ratio of tourists.
The food is excellent and the hamburgers are the best in town.
2012/13 update: Â Thora is gone, but Will is there with Mary, Steve, and Drago, who I neglected to mention four years ago. Â The food and cocktails are even better now. Â They also now have a great weekend brunch.
I found a charge on my credit card statement that read Terry's Lounge and I just thought I blacked out again since I've never heard of a lounge named Terry in Carmel. Â
Well, I Googled it and found out this is the lounge inside of Cypress Inn. Â It is a very special and inimate lounge that serves solid drinks. Â A bit upscale yet slightly casual only because they are THE most dog friendly establishment I have ever been too (besides a dog park).
I was impressed.  I'm glad it wasn't  a cat establishment, I'm not a big fan.  Sorry, Kimmy Kat!!!
Enjoy a lovely adult beverage and bring your furry friend! Â BYOD or you may feel left out!
