    Thank Heavens for Dale Evans...Drive.

3 stars for the jerky, and one extra star for the bbq tacos. I'm not quite sure if I'd stack the bbq up next to some of my all time faves, but the bbq tacos were actually pretty amazing.

What I love most about stopping here of course is the jerky. The best part about it is getting free samples. They'll literally let you sample every type of jerky if you want to hang out there long enough. Then I dare you not to buy some.

Great stuff, and worth a quick stop for sure. Or you can always pull in to Sonic...or Subway..or AAA Burger Joint #12,356...bor-ing.

The barbecue is just OK but I will not intentionally eat their food again.  Instead, you should travel up north to Odom's Barbecue in Waxahachie, TX and try one  of their smoked turkey legs that is amazing.  Unfortunately not always in stock but worth checking on   : )

Four stars?  I guess if you are starving.  Or if you are from space......
Skip the BBQ.  But load up on the jerky.  The jalapeno and habanero jerky were great!

Clean restrooms and store.  I like to stop at this location to pick up quick bites or drinks for long drive between Austin and Dallas.  You can pick up fresh jerky too.  BBQ is good during the lunch and dinner hours.

You can't ask for a better rest stop than this one.  Such a lucky find!

Awesome surprise! Thought we would get sonic, but walked in and smelled the BBQ. The Mashed potatoes are a MUST!

I drive to Waco and San Antonio from Dallas quite frequently and this is my stop on one of the directions.  Get gas and use the restrooms that are usually clean.  You can get your lottery ticket and fresh roasted nuts and fresh jerky.  Some afternoons there are live bands out front.

Not at all what I was expecting. I was expecting a sit-down restaurant, but you simply walk up to the counter and are handed your food in a jiffy. I thought the portions were a little small, but walked away properly stuffed. The food could have been a tad hotter, but it was very good!

Tons of Jerkies and other edibles. Look for the starship enterprise across the street!

maybe more like 3.5 stars, good stop on the way to Austin, the gas was higher than some but other options helped fix that.  Sonic with their awesome drinks, and the BBQ restaurant and the the things for sell including jerky, pickled peppers, spice rubs, sauces.  The brisket tacos were decent and the life sized artwork of cattle and buffalo on the grounds is totally Texan. I will stop every trip from now on.  Don't know if they have wi-fi but it would be another star if they do.

Stopped today before the rains hit for a quick ham and cheese sandwich.  They had some nice country music playing out front.  They had tons of all kinds of jerky and a bbq cafeteria side at the back.  Still we were in a hurry and kept with the ham and cheese sandwiches.  We got one of their own and one of Mom's Foods out of Fort Worth.  They were both pretty bad.  Neither cheese or ham came close to covering the damp white bread.  Maybe BBQ or Sonic is the way to go here.

This is a great place to stop on your way down I-35. Get some of the jerky. You won't be disappointed!

Oh, also, watch out for speed traps in and around Italy, TX - I see them waiting out there constantly on I-35.

I always stop here on my to and from Dallas.  It's always clean and Sonic is great for an afternoon fountain drink.  Only drawback is you come out smelling like smoked meat!

Thankyou Yelp for helping me to find some of the best BBQ in Texas!  I had my reservations when we first pulled in that we had made a mistake, but the BBQ was good & also the mashed potatoes were awesome. One other side note: they had pretty good prices and Texas themed artwork and a large variety of beef jerky.

What other gas station/convenience store has a monolithic compound in the backyard?  That right there makes this a glorious novelty.  As if that's not enough, add a fantastic variety of fresh (ie, in a deli case) jerky, and it's a must-stop if you're braving I-35.  Don't forget to grab some homemade jam and peanut brittle on your way out the door to ease your road rage.

    Nice, big, clean, well lit.

But the jerky is where its at. They must have 20 different kinds and you can sample!

Unlike our usual stop in West, who always seems to be out when we go through, this place will probably never be out of any type.

Don't stop expecting to eat barbecue. Sonic was open, but no smoked meats.  I was expecting a Smokehouse to have a smokehouse.  Other than that, it's a nice convenience store.

Stopped into this clean stop on the way between Austin and Dallas this week.  Decided to try their Q.

Loosk like I was the first customer of the day and it took some time to unrap my order.

Brisket - solid flavor, thicker cut which I like and good smoke ring. Not much bark as it looked to have been in a warming drawer in saran wrap for a while but it was better than I expected.

Turkey - wasn't too keen on their turkey.  Not a fan of the outside crust / bark as it was more ham like than turkey.  It was moist but for what ever reason didn't hit the spot for me.

Sauce - my meal came sauced, I prefer the option to put it on the side.

Fries - hot & fresh, a little under cooked though.

    Banana pudding - very excellent.

I dined in the eating area shared with Sonic - had to endure the most ridiculous conversations overheard from the drive through workers, can't remember the details other than after about 5 minutes I was ready shoot my ears off just to get the noise to stop.

Who knew the route between Dallas and Austin would have so many great rest stops? This place is like the oasis in the middle of the desert.

This place is clean, and the store has a lot of junk that screams "TEXAS!!" (some makes great gifts for people not from here). They have a habanero flavored beef jerky that'll definitely light a fire on your tongue!

Best rest stop ever!  Hands down this is a must stop on my way to or from Dallas.  Clean bathrooms, lots of organic snacks, even had some live music one day.  Ahhhh.... Texas.... gotta love it!

Best highway rest stop I have ever been to.  Very clean men's room look like upscale restaurant/department store.

Convenience store on the right as you enter, has some interesting chips from Mexico, same with the soda cooler. But, the best part is the center island which s filled with over a dozen types of jerky from beef to venison. The ladies behind the counter are super agreeable and you can taste one or all. Prices for the jerky are pretty good too...wish I had bought more.

Only downside was the Cherry Limeade at the Sonic. So much ice, they left no room for the limeade!

Very Very good BBQ. I had the Turkey Sandwhich w   Broccoli and Cheese. The turkey was yummy and juicy, and the service was prompt and the atmosphere country as hell which made it great!

My brother has eaten here several times before me and said it was pretty decent, so I had to check it out for myself.

I had the 3 meat combo which consisted of ribs, brisket, and sausage. I think I might have been the first customer of the day, so the meat handler had to bust out the meats from the saran wrapped pre-packaging. Since it was a new pack of ribs, I got a some of the smaller end pieces. The end ribs were kinda hard and tough, something which I expected but some of the inner ribs of the slab were pretty good. Didn't take that much effort for the meat to fall off the bone. The brisket meat was super lean, but yet it fell apart easily with some fork action. The sausage was kinda different; it was flavorsome and seemed like it's been on the heat for a good while for all the seasonings to resonate throughout the juicy meat.

I'm not sure if they make their sauce, which they should, but it was pretty damned decent. I had them pour some of the heated sauce on at the line and then I had some of the bottled at the table. I really couldn't complain about their sauce, but yet nothing really stood out from it. On a scale of one to five, I would give it a four.

As for my sides I opted for the mashed potatoes and gravy and green bean casserole. Both of the sides used fresh veggies! I believe the mashed potatoes used were of the round red-skinned variety and the seasoning was pretty much awesome. I should have just gotten a double order if it. The green bean casserole used fresh green beans which I could tell from the crispness of each green bean that I bit into. The casserole was good; however, I've been so used eating this type of casserole with canned green beans that I actually like the canned better. I think the canned brings out a bit more flavor because of the salinity from the juices.

This is just about the perfect half-way point between my parent's house south of Waco and my house in North Dallas.  Last week I ended up having to run a couple of errands for the family and procure a few items that could not be found in Waco... and this was were we decided to meet and exchange the packages.

It was about 815pm when we arrived.  We ordered two loaded baked potatoes with bbq on top.  The potatoes were old and discolored as potatoes get when they are kept warm for too long.

The brisket had a pretty good flavor, the sauce was very good.  My mom and aunt had turkey instead of beef and they said it was very good.

Located inside a convenience store, I was able to get my soda out of the machine that offered the flavorings.  Diet Dr. Pepper with Vanilla is a great thing for keeping yourself awake on a long drive back to North Dallas.

All in all this place was ok, and I'm sure I will be there again next time I have to meet my family half-way.  But hopefully it wont be this late at night and the potatoes wont be old.

This was quite a serendipitous find a couple of years on the way to Dallas.  After peeing, I wanted to try some jerky and they have a humongous selection.  The lady behind the counter did not stop feeding me jerky.  I didn't feel guilted into  buying any despite all the stuff I ate.

On a recent trip back from Dallas, I stopped in and noticed the beverage selection.  There is stuff there that I've never seen before.  It's kind of like being in Canada and seeing Sunkist Cola; brands that I'm familiar with but different flavors.

Back to the peeing; the bathrooms are really clean.  I feel like I'm in The Cheesecake Factory or Cool River when I'm in the bathroom.  I feel important and safe.  I feel like if there would be a bathroom attendant there, I would talk to him whilst washing my hands and tip him a dollar after he dries them.  Does that make sense?

    Take the Italy exit.

Kevin pretty much covered much of the details of this place, but he left out a very important factor: They've got some of the best beef jerky anywhere.  Plenty of varieties, from mild to sweet to teriyaki to burn-your-mouth habanero.  And not just beef: Elk, bison, crocodile...probably others I'm forgetting.

Friendly people that will let you sample any of it, and happily sell it to you a quarter-pound at a time.

This jerky isn't tough and dry as some are, and it's also not greasy.  Good stuff.  If you've had beef jerky before and thought "eh, it's OK, nothing special" then you owe it to yourself to give this place a try if you're on the road between Dallas and Waco.

There's also a Sonic drive-in there too, if you're in need of a Reese's Blast or some such...

    Oh yeah...and they're open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

    In a word?Awesome.

It's not particularly fun to drive back and forth to Dallas from Austin, and when you factor in the stops that you have to make along the way, the original idea always seems to default to get there as fast as you can, hope you don't run out of gas or get a ticket.

This does not tend to lead to pleasurable traveling experiences. Imagine my surprise, then, when we stopped off at this place in need of some quick grub and found what appears, in no particular order, to be:

    a) the cleanest, most elaborate truck stop of sorts, like, ever
    b) some spot on BBQ, much more than I anticipated being able to find on the road
    c) all sorts of eccentric sodas

It was the third point in particular that made me the happiest: rows and rows of Topo Chico (various flavors), oceans of other quirky and effervescent libations to keep your sweet tooth in check, and aisles and aisles of other quick yummy diversions.  Is it possible to make a point of hitting certain service stations on your road trips? It is now.
