Me and the SO have stopped by here several times for lunch, since it is not far from his jobsite. There are things I like about this place but also have some "reservations" about a few things.
The best  thing I like about here is the bar side. A large bar with several TVs, all on sports channels.  The music that was playing each of the time we were here was oldies, fun but not overwhelming or obnoxious. The atmosphere is what I like, friendly and comfortable.
The thing I was not impressed with was the food (meh). The SO has raved about just about everything he orders from here (he normally orders some kind of fish). I had the pulled pork sliders and while the pork was tender, it was pretty bland. I could not identify what the sauce was because I could not taste it.  Now  the bleu cheese cole slaw was good (and I requested it on the side).
I probably need to try something else.
Went for lunch on a hot day and it was a relief.I hadn't been here in years and the beer selection had improved greatly.I had a gyro and it was better than average , served with very good french fries.Service was relatively  quick and pleasant- music was too loud - I put my earplugs in! I'd go back.
Review Source:3.5 stars.
I love the Tiger's Tale and have been coming here since the mid-90s. It's the perfect little bar/tavern with solid and simple bar food. No, there's nothing here that will really knock your socks off, but it's a fun place to get together with friends to eat and drink and kill a few hours off your day or night.
I am still shocked after all these years that no matter what day of the week or time of the day you stop by, the parking lot is always packed. That's always a good sign. I wish they had an outdoor patio, but with the parking lot always packed, there's probably just no way for them to do it. I wish they would open one of these in East Brunswick. This is exactly what East Brunswick is missing -- and don't try and tell me how we have Gusto Grill. It's just not the same.
Long live the ole Tiger's Tale!
This is the place to go in the Princeton/Montgomery area for burgers, ribs, wings, and daily specials, all at a reasonable price. This place is packed 7 days a week, and there is a reason for that. Good food at reasonable prices, and a friendly, varied bar. At the bar, you could be sitting next to your landscaper, or your hedge fund manager. It's a classic NJ "pub" style atmosphere, and the dining area is very kid-friendly. Definitely NOT the place for a romantic night out, as it's noisy & crowded most of the time. Also, if you are gluten free, their ribs here are as well, and they're delicious!
Review Source:I love going here. The food is decent and the service is great. Prices are on par with what you could expect at any bar/restaurant. The serve popcorn with beer which is nice to snack on. Burgers are good. Good atmosphere and laid back compared to most bars. Great for a couple beers on a weeknight or to catch a game.
Review Source:If its on the grill its worth it! Â Atmosphere is why i will always o back and food is often adventurous but stay with grilled stuff - its in their wheelhouse. Â Steaks are hit or miss. Butbugets, chicken, chops, ribs, occassional fish are great.
Large menu with 2 pages of daily specials.
Key tip - dinner salad comes standard with hard  boiled egg and baby shrimp.
Sit barside for atmosphere.  Expect to wait 20-30 mins Thu throughSat night  fun place to watch a game.
Wings, wings, and more wings! I love the wings here. Not sure if its the size of the wings, although that does make it better, but these things are just really good. I prefer getting wings without the sauce so that I get an idea of how they're made and I get to keep that crispiness from the frying. I definitely enjoy the fact that they're not overcooked but they're cooked just enough so that the cartilage comes off cleanly. I don't like wasting anything on the wings, so when everything falls off the bone, I'm impressed and thoroughly satisfied. The wings are fried so that the actual skin can peel right off, not like some places where the skin and meat are overfried and you can't tell what's what. These are the traditional wings so they have no breading and they really make the night, especially with the different choices of beers this place has to offer.
I was going to give 5 stars but some of the other food isn't that great. Their chili is drowned in cheese, when it said it came with cheese, that's not what I was expecting. Their cheese fries are the same. The person who made them either wasn't paying attention or didn't care how much was put on them. There was more cheese than fries, and it wasn't really good cheese.
Verdict: Go for Wings, Go for Beer, Don't go for Cheese
Standard tavern, local sports pub kind of place. The bar is pretty big, always packed, and there are plenty of TVs. The food is decent - nothing spectacular, but they have a lot of choices so everyone will be happy. Â I did ask if they had fried pickles, which they didn't, but they offered to make them for me. I thought that was pretty cool.
My husband likes this place - he can get his bar time in and have a drink and watch the game and I sit at the bar and people watch. Sounds great to me.
I felt duped. Stopped in the other night with a buddy of mine. Ordered the nachos and was talked into the large order. My thought was how much more could the larger order be if the small one was only 7 or 8 bucks . Well when the bill came the nachos- which sucked by the way, as  they were nothing more than a mountain of burnt cheese some beans, and some variety of meat- were 15 bucks!!!!! Really? That some coffee drink and dessert and my bill was over 30 bucks! For that amount of money there are much better places than the tale.... Food has sucked for a while anyway! We are taking a long hiatus from this joint! If we ever return at all !!!!!
Review Source:The food is pretty good, nothing to get excited about. It is what bars should be like. Most fall short of this. The standard food (burgers, ribs, wings) are well done. The prime rib was disappointing and the steaks are just ok in general. But for a surf and turf for under $20 with sides its a great value. Fish and chips are spot on.
They do make the effort to make the menu varied and for this I give them quite a bit of credit. Lobster sliders, mignon tip sandwich w/ bearnaise, a grouper reuben type thing thats great, tilapia is solid. The dinner salad (even with the tiny shrimp) is just right. There is a lot more on the menu that I am interested in trying.
I guess this is its main strength. Its a bar/restaurant, but unlike others actually made an effort to create an interesting and varied menu. Furthermore, they were successful at this endeavor. Unlike many restaurants (at any price point) they dont serve just the standard fare. Admittedly some dishes fall very short (the asian sesame yellowfin - but the wasabi mashed was great). But I am curious to try the rest of the food and I like the staff and atmosphere (in the restaurant anyway).
This started out as a 3 star review but 4 is really more appropriate. It took me writing a few words about it to realize that.
Went here last night with my parents for my Dad's birthday. Â We waited about 10 minutes for a table, so we went to the bar. Â Even though I'm 25 I look like I'm at least a decade younger, so I know the bartenders weren't too pleased to see me sitting at the bar, however short it was of a duration, and despite the fact I only got a diet coke. Â They gave us free popcorn, and we munched on that. Â My Dad got a wine, and Mom got an Appletini. Â
The beeper thingie they gave us to alert our table opening up was great-no confusion there. Â I headed over to the table and then our waitress was there immediately. Â She was GREAT! Â Knew the menu inside-out, and was comprehensive and fast. Â I ordered the Uncle's Tuna Tips Special (comes with onions, cherry tomatoes, and small pieces of toast on a skillet) and the spinach side side. Â My Dad got the Prime Rib special with broccoli, and Mom got the Lobster sliders. Â All our food was really good, and filling. Â I boxed some of mine up and my Dad some of his. Â Cute and comfortable inside, with a large, inviting bar. Â I thought it was cool that they grill food in the open in the bar area-very different and nice to see.
We've been coming here for probably 15 years now whenever we're in the Princeton area or for a special occasion. Â It's a small place that can get crowded by the traffic light its at (in recent years that intersection backs up like you won't believe) but still easily reachable and good, accommodating staff.
Ordinary. Everything here is ordinary. It is just another "family friendly, but you can get really drunk here" type of New Jersey restaurant. The food is the same, the environment is the same, the atmosphere is the same, and the people are the same. I would just drive those extra miles to Princeton if I really wanted to have a great meal instead of going to the most convenient place. There are much better places in the area. So why settle for less when not too far away is more?
Review Source:A typical tavern-bar kind of eatery. It's not too far from us and offers a lot of different food, and is definitely a very gluttonous option if me and SO decide to go. It's never a yearning, but more of an option when we don't want to think about where to go out to eat.
The bar area is usually where we end up, at one of hte tables on the outer part of the room. There is also a dining room area too. If you're eating at the bar it gets  little crowded. They also grill right at the bar certain foods, so most likely if they got that fired up, you'll end up smelling like your food.
Their portions are pretty immense and quite filling, and I've never finished any sort of entree I've gotten there. Their desserts are quite good, the Tollhouse cookie pie is my favorite -it's basically a slightly soften cookie in the shape of a pie slice topped served warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup.
The prices are pretty reasonable. It can get crowded during peak hours like on Friday and Saturday nights.
We eat out a lot, and this was one of the worst dinners we have ever had. We were dissapointed starting with the appetizers (buffalo oysters were so bad we sent them back) and it never got better. French onion soup was over salted, chicken wellington tasted like a hot pocket, and ahi tuna was just plain bad. Furthermore, it wasfreakin expensive.
Went ther with medium expectations, will never go back
The Tiger's Tale is one step up from local chains. It's been around forever and is a very good place to get a beer and a burger.
Stick with the grilled basics of burgers, steaks and pork chops and you'll do fine here. Retro iceberg dinner salads with crumbled egg and mini shrimp is a favorite.
I've been here quite a few times. Â It's one of our old stand bys when we can't think of any place to go. Â
There is a small dining area, and some tables around the bar. Â Table service is much better than the bar service. Â I dont' think I've ever ordered something that disappointed me. Â The Tiger's Tale Chicken Sandwich is awesome and the Fish Tacos are fantastic (though i'd order them without cilantro next time)
It's good food, cold beers and reasonable prices... Check it out!
Mmmm- the perfect place for average food.
Granted that Tiger's Tale isn't a gourmet restaurant that uses high quality, fresh ingredients- the Tiger's Tale is a great place to grab a quick lunch with co-workers or friends!
I've been here a few times and I would have to say that the Lobster Roll is my favorite! Fresh and light, the lobster roll is a great dish (for a good price).
This wouldn't necessarily be my first choice restaurant, but I would say that the food is tasty, the prices are reasonable and that it's ALWAYS packed- I guess that says something right??
I had lunch here for the first time this week and walked away satisfied. I had a prime rib panini, fries, and slaw. Friends had BBQ pork sandwich, grilled chicken, and lobster roll. They all looked good to me. I won't put all my chips on Tiger's Tale until I go back a few times, but so far the food has been good.
Review Source:Went here for the first time a few days ago, walked in and got a seat at the bar right away. We ordered food to go, the fish tacos were SLAMMIN. Definitely would go back again for the food. The beer was good, and the waiter was friendly. Overall chilled out environment, but might be different on busy nights/weekends.
Review Source:average food place with bad service.. I guess it's a better bar than restaurant.. Â They served a dried out burger on a hard doughy poppy kaiser roll.. Â Wings were kind of greasy and stringy.. The sauce was really average, not much spice. Potato skins were disappointing.. They were strips of potatoes with very little bacon with a good amount of cheese melted over them.
We were sitting in a dining room with five or 6 other tables eating.. Each table had a different waitress, which seemed very strange.. Â
Place is close to a good stone shop.
Make sure you are prepared to wait if you come after 7, especially if you have a party over 4. There are few large tables but many small, 2-person tables, just because of the size of the room. So best case is to come with just one other person; the wait shouldnt ever be more than 15 minutes if you do that.
Portions are LARGE. Lamb and steak are amazing
Service is friendly. If the service is slow, its because the waiters have to wind through dozens of people standing and drinking at the bar. Please consider that before you complain.
Its loud. But then again, its a bar-grill. The volume only adds to the atmosphere. No one is coming in here expecting a quiet conversation
We've passed by this place numerous times over the past year, and there was always smoke coming out the back. Â BBQ! Â So we stopped in for a light lunch today.
Basically, this is what TGIF or the other places want to be--an authentic local sports bar with food and friendly people who don't need flair.
Music is the typical classic rock, setting is dark wood with old signs and mirrors, a decent selection of beers on tap (not stupendous, but decent), and an extensive bar like menu.
From the seasonal beer selections, I chose Honey Moon and Jim got a light tasting but dark Flying Fish. Â The Honey Moon was very light, and the Flying fish slightly chocolately, but watery (it was hot and muggy today, so they were actually perfect).
Way too many items on the menu, so I settled for the cajun wings and Jim got the half slab of ribs, which came with salad (huge--your choice with or without salad shrimp and chopped hardboiled eggs). Â The salad was great. Â I usually hate salad shrimp, but here they had been thawed properly and actually tasted like sweet shrimp, not paste.
The cajun wings were a bit greasy for me, but they'll be great in tomorrow's chicken salad. Not at all salty, but blackened. Â The seasoning didn't do much for them, I hate to say.
The ribs were tender--not fall off the bone, but tender. Â Good pig flavour. Â The sauce tasted like Heinz 57 Sauce. Â A familiar taste that is good if that is what you like. Â Corn bread was more cake like. Â Applesauce as expected, and fries good. Â
I regret not ordering the boardwalk fries (or whatever their name for it is): battered and fried fries, served with cheese sauce. Â I'm not pregnant, as far as I know, but these I've been craving. Â And I'm not even a beachgoer. Â They simply sounded really good.
Friendly service, decent food and atmosphere. Â
With 2 beers, an appetizer, 1 glass of wine, and half order of ribs, $49 including tax and tip.
What's not to love.
I can be at The Tale, 3 different times during the day, and it will be 3 different places -- long way of saying, something for everyone.
I can 3pm it: Â Happy Hour -- woo hoo
I can 6pm it: Â Early bird special with my aged Mom who lives across the street
I can 9pm it: Â Rock on -- music or football or both !!!
The best is the Lobster special...or the 1/2 rack of lamb. Â Cheap, but top notch eats...gives meaning to good bar food.
I always know at least 3 people in the joint, Â which can either be a plus or a minus --
My wife and I have stopped here twice, the first time hoping that the place would be a good average place to get something quick to eat when we don't feel like driving to Somerville or Princeton.
We didn' t care for the food, a couple local diners are quite a bit better which in my mind makes this inedible.
After a a few months, we forgot how bad it was and figured it couldn't be that bad and stopped there again. Â This place gets #2 for the worst restaurant in our area, with "Charlie Browns" being the actual winner of of the most awful.
Good local restaraunt with no pretensions. Good beer, good food, good service, moderate prices. The wings are OK, my wife loves this place for the lobster, I've tried burgers, the shrimp and scallop combo, all good. Â Can be noisy but you do not go to Tigers Tale for a quiet evening out.
Review Source:As a child my mom was a "career woman" which apparently means you do not cook for your family. We ate at ol' Tiger's Tale at least 2 or 3 times a week.
In those days, I wasn't a vegetarian, and I loveeeeed their crab dip, buffalo wings, and salads with little baby shrimp on top. (I was also a fat child) I still love the salads, sans shrimp.
Basically, the Tale is just a great townie bar where you can run in to everyone from your best friend's dad, your history teacher, former classmates from high school, single old men on the prowl, or your neighbor. The atmosphere is... almost gross, but the staff (all too old to be working at a townie bar) make up for it. It is the perfect place to grab a burger and beer and one of the few options in Montyg.
Living only 5 minutes away, I come here about once a month. I'd say the food is about a 3, but Tiger's Tale is all about the atmosphere. It's just a good old American bar and grill. You don't come here to eat healthy, but rather to share food and drinks with friends. The bar is quite big with a good deal of seating, but there's little else room to stand if you're not dining. The dining room is big enough for normal crowds, but not really big enough for the crowds that come in Friday through Sunday. Saturday night is karaoke night - be forewarned. They have some great clasics like burgers and NJ shore fries that other people have reviewed. I agree that their pizza leaves a lot to be desired. Their potato bacon soup special is great, and although it sounds weird, I've grown to like their cajun chicken in linguine alfredo - I cannot explain why. My wife and son love their clams, and their basic sandwiches are pretty good. The entrees can get pretty expensive for what you get though. Service can be slow, but it's always by nice people - you get a good slice of community here, seeing Princeton University teachers & students, VP's of places like J&J and Merrill Lynch, and regular workers stopping by for a cocktail.
Overall though, you come here for the people and atmosphere of being a town favorite that is finally smoke-free (go NJ!). The food isn't bad and isn't great, but all told it's a fun place to hang out.
Tiger's Tale gets 5 stars if you know what to order, but if you come in clueless it's probably more of a 3-4 star place. Rack of lamb is AMAZING--it's only served once a week, I think on Monday's. If you eat meat/lamb it's a MUST try--& at under $20 (TT is a casual joint) it's a steal. The cheddar burger is my other favorite & a Tiger's Tale classic. Actually anything drenched in their flavorful, sharp cheddar sauce is quite tasty. I can't speak to anything else because the only other item I've had is the beer (though their black & tans are good!) My mom & I frequently go here on my visits home, & if you can get a fitness/health nut (her, not me :) to eat rack of lamb & cheddar burgers, they have to be good!
Review Source:I am not an expert on all things Tiger's Tale, but I have stopped in here a couple of times for some beer and food after playing volleyball. Â The beer is cold and they have quite few decent draft selections. Â The food, however, was not very good. Â I ordered a bar pie and it was pretty much one of the worst bar pies I've ever had. Â It's really a disgrace for any place in NJ to make a subpar pizza.
So anyway, this place is a cool spot to drink some beers and hang out, maybe order a few appetizers, but that's about it. Â It's probably not fair to judge their entire menu on one experience with an inedible pizza, but I don't know that I'd set out for TTT with the intentions of enjoying a good meal.
9/07 - So I returned to the TT for a Thursday night happy hour/dinner. Â The place was packed, so I know they're doing something right, but I can't figure out why I'm the only person not impressed by this place. Â Again, no complaints in the beer department, however the food was not good. Â Everyone else at the table seemed to be enjoying their burgers (so maybe that's what you're supposed to order here), but my friend and I hardly made a dent in the appetizers we decided to share.
I completely love this restaurant, even for all its quirks.
Although usually crowded, the Tiger's Tale tavern is a great place to get a (somewhat large!) meal that everyone can enjoy, if you have an hour+ to spare! Their service can be slow at times, and the atmosphere sort of loud. But, at least they have added better lighting to the place, as it used to be really dimmly lit and the whole place smokey (thankfully they solved that problem as well).
I recommend the calimari, cheese sticks, cheddar burger, and brownie a la mode for a perfect dinner! :)
