I went to Trenton Social last night to attend an open mic. Since I was there anyway, I figured that I might do a few minutes of stand-up, even though everyone else performing was a musician. I was planning on doing a set about the tedium of commuting, but as the night grew longer and I continued to be reminded of much I hate Trenton, I decided that I would just go up onstage and talk smack about the capital of New Jersey for however long time and the patience of the host would permit. Turns out, it was only about five minutes max.
I started off by commenting on the historical significance of Trenton, and how George Washington crossed the Delaware River on the night of Christmas with his ragtag army to slaughter the Hessian forces sleeping peacefully in their quarters, probably after a night of religious observance and celebration. Heroic? Or cowardly? I suggested cowardly. Everything kind of just went downhill from there.
While I was on the mic, I even made reference to the review that I'm writing now. I said I would give this place either three or four stars. Now, apparently the owner was standing there listening to me the entire time. I think that was his opportunity to secure a four or even five-star review from me; he could have offered me a free drink, an appetizer, a discount, etc. But no. When will business owners learn to bribe me? I am a pretty righteous person, but come on -- it's like they're not even putting any effort in to corrupt me.
Anyway, I like this place. It's much better than most of the rest of Trenton.
This is a great place in Trenton. Â Meaning that it is has kind of hipster vibe, lounge like. Â In another city it would be very busy, it has all the right pieces, but its in Trenton. Â
The sushi was fantastic, as good as anywhere.
The burgers were pretty good. Â The fries leave a lot to be desired, kind of out of place with the other food.
The drinks were surprisingly good, although there is no wine list and you are left to the waitress verbally conveying a wine list, with plenty of errors in it. Its right there on the box, how hard is it to write it down or memorize it?
Music was good, live guitar, singing.
All this being said, I would definitely come back, it is what it is and if your expectations are inline with what it is, you will enjoy it. Â Hopefully it get polished up as time goes on, it could easily go the wrong way.
Needed a place to eat - close to the arena where I was going to a concert. Â I am born and raised in the City of Trenton but it "ain't" what it used to be and it is hard to find a place in the city where you can feel safe anymore. Â Trenton Social was suggested to me and I and a few friends walked to it from the arena parking lot. Â WOW - were we pleasantly surprised. Â The decor is beautifully done, casual and comfortable with sofas amongst the tables - very eclectic - loved it. Â And - on top of that, the food was outstanding. Â Each of us ordered something different and each of us loved our food. Â Considering how crowded it became, the service was good. We look fsorward to getting back there. Â Hope this is a sign that Trenton is on the move up.
