If the restaurant messes up on the rice, then we got a problem.
All the food we ordered smelled good. It all smelled authentic, but when you put it in your mouth, there was no kick of flavor or spices at all. Bland, bland, bland. And they messed up on the rice like I said before. It was undercooked and underseasoned.
Save yourself some trouble and go somewhere else for Mexican food. This place is not authentic. It's might be up to par with Taco Bell, but I think Taco Bell knows how to cook their rice.
This place isn't good if your needing a Mexican food fix. I've only eaten there a few times and I'm from the area. It's okay for nightlife but just not acceptable when your talking about the food. For me, my favorite part of the whole Mexican restaurant experience is when you first get the chips and salsa, you can already tell what the rest of the food will be like. Well both the chips and salsa taste like the generic brands that you might find at the grocery store. So does the rest of the food. The margaritas are good though, except pricey compared to the other restaurants in the area unless they are on special. I recommend you take your dollars and hunger and go somewhere else.
Review Source:I have very mixed feelings about this place. Â The food is tasty and the service was good, but I am almost positive the "Mexican rice" was simply Uncle Ben's white rice with some coloring. Â The entrees themselves were good, but they were a little higher than Carbondale pricing. Â I did love the chips and salsa. Â I am not sure how this compares to other Mexican places in Carbondale, but it's not a bad option for a tasty meal.
Review Source:While the service was good overall, this is not what I look for in a Mexican restaurant. Â The food is as authentic as Taco Bell.
It is a great place to grab a drink as they have a large bar and patio area, but save your appetite for somewhere else.
If you enjoy cilantro, corn tortillas, and/or barbacoa skip over this place.
Really, Tres is more of a bar that happens to serve "mexican" food during the day.
Steak Adobo & Enchiladas Rojas! Steak was really good, service was an afterthought.
Locals love this place, more of a 'place where they know your name', rather than 'excellent mexican food'. The dining area isn't very clean looking, though it might be just because it's REALLY old. They have a few good items, but if you're looking for excellent mexican food, look elsewhere.
This is probably the furthest thing from Mexican food I've had in a long time. Â You stand a better chance getting a good meal out of the frozen food section at Schnucks.
For starters, I'm pretty sure all the chicken comes from a can. Â That flavor is entirely too distinct to ever mask behind the price of a $10.50 chimichanga.
Next, the price. Â No Mexican food should ever cost that much, ESPECIALLY in a college town.
The service wasn't bad. Â I can't blame them for the fact that the food was not any good. Â No one at our table even wanted to finish their meal though.
The only thing this place had going for it was that the Pepsi was correctly carbonated.
One of the better places to go in C'dale for say a girls' night out or something. Â A plus is that it's not located right on the strip, so you have less of a chance of running into the drunk 19 year olds who's of age friends have just got them plastered. Â I'm not hatin, I've been that 19 year old before. Â But when you're past that, Tres can accomodate you.
Review Source:Dinner was disappointing. Maybe it's as good as it gets when it comes to Mexican food in Carbondale? They tried to mask the lack of quality with an overcompensation of shredded cheese. Bleh....The margaritas weren't very strong either, but I was there for the $3 drink special so that could explain it. I did pass by the bar on my way out and it looked like a fun place to hang out. If I'm ever visiting again, I'd stop by for the bar but not for the food.
Review Source:I only gave this place four stars because the food isn't very good, and it's expensive. However, the bar is a nice place to chill and have a drink. The crowd is pretty diverse, and it never gets too crazy. It's not "the place to be" by any means, but you can sit down with friends and hear yourself talk and not be bulled over by people walking by. They have bands here, mostly reggae, and there's rarely a cover to get in. Drink prices are reasonable, and Tippy (if you have been here, you  know Tippy) is the man!
Review Source:One of the best bars to hang out in. You will see everyone and anyone in this bar/resturant. Dont be surprised to see a drag queen, a politician, everyone that works there that isnt working and a band all hanging out. The best salsa ever. The grilled chicken nachos and layered bean salad are FANTASTIC. They even let you dance on the bar...well...they let me! I drank more Jim Beam at "Tres" than I have anywhere else.
Review Source:I'm so glad Scott got to review Tres first. I think he pretty much lived there while living in Carbondale. I don't care for Mexican fewd, but their nachos were pretty awesome. I do have a soft spot for margaritas and they have darn good ones! It's been a couple of years since I've been back to Tres Hombres...hopefully someday soon!
