Great place if you are looking for rare cheese and a fantastic selection of both wine and craft beer. Â Trio did not disappoint.
Very friendly service at every turn and a pub inside the space. Â Probably able to seat 10 or so with a larger area in front of the bar.
We had a Black Cannon on cask (thanks for the surprise Vince) that may have not been that fresh (poor rotation?) or just not a great beer from Heavy Seas. Â Still nice to hold a pint while perusing the beer aisles/coolers or sampling as much cheese as you need to. Â
Also have snacks, merchandise, and cool gadgets for the home or bar.
Beer was very well priced. Â One bottle in particular was over $5 less for a 22oz. bottle than one place in Duck. That is a big plus to me. No price gouging.
A must visit when you are in the area and want to impress someone with a fine selection of wine or cheese, whether it be local or imported.
I am SO glad a friend took us here, otherwise I would never have realized it was a bar.  It  looks like a wine shop from the outside, but who knew after hours it was a beer/wine bar?  I thought it might be a bit pretentious, but we felt totally comfortable in jeans and tanks here, but you could also feel comfortable dressed up...that kind of place.  They have a huge beer and wine selection, and will let you try anything before you buy without being annoyed to do it (some places are like that).  It got a little cramped downstairs so we moved upstairs for some more room for our group.  It honestly just feels like home there....not loud, but just loud enough to not be boring.  I wish there were more places like this in VB where I live.
Review Source:I recently held the rehearsal dinner for my wedding at Trio since my wife and I are huge beer/wine/cheese fans. Â I could not have been more pleased with the outcome. Â John and Jennifer (the owners) were terrific in helping us choose the perfect arrangements for our guests and created an amazing atmosphere in the upstairs party area. Â Our guests could not stop commenting on how delicious the food was and how wonderful the drink selections were. The local live music also provided a perfect soundtrack to our evening.
I have had the opportunity to visit Trio a few times and I must say it has become a regular stop for me when in the OBX.
If only they had a larger menu, I'd give this place 5 stars. Â Well, also a little more unique atmosphere would help, too.
Trio is one of only a few venues I have been to that allows retail wine purchase, with on-site consumption... and a cafe menu to boot (for us Richmonders, think: Â Barrel Thief). Â The French and Italian wine selection was strong. Â We got several bottles of Giogandas and Chateauneuf-du-Pape, at fair prices, nonetheless.
The staff and owner were great; they chilled and decanted our fragile wine. Â It's amazing how many restaurants with a solid wine list do not treat their bottles with that level of respect and care. Â Our group ordered a variety of charcuterie and cheese - all of it was very, very good and clearly well-selected.
Trio's atmosphere is slightly agoraphobic... a large, bi-level space, with a loft overlooking the large bar area. Â A live band was playing downstairs, which definitely raised their stock (I mean these guys played 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots'... come one!).
While it does not seem like a beach bar / restaurant in the least, it is a fun place to go, that's a little more formal that the prototypical outer banks hot spots.
Specialty beer or fine wine this is the place for you!
Kenny is the wine guy and he can hook you up with virtually anything you might have a taste for on any given evening. Â John is the self proclaimed "Beermonger" and he keeps the taps moving with great brews. Â Take a look up on the window sills to see the taps of some of the hundreds of different brews that they've had over the last many months.
What I like most about this spot is the cheese. Â Get one of their sampler trays with some chutney and let the appropriate beer or wine help you savor the experience.
The say a good way to judge the success of a place is by looking at the parking lot. Â If that is the case Trio is a huge success....there is rarely a night when you don't see the parking lot very full from folks enjoying the offerings at this spot.
Next time you are looking for a good spot to unwind give Trio a try.
The ambiance of Trio is fantastic, that is if you're looking for good wine, great conversation, great beer with medium to high prices. Now let me clarify a few of those points:
1. Trio is all about two things, wine and beer. Kenny is the the man behind the bar and one of the men behind Trio and is the man to see concerning a wine selection. There are four wine stations for tasting or you can simply sit at the bar and ask Kenny for advice.
2. Trio also does live music and I've been there Friday and Saturday nights and have always been impressed with the bands. I was able to sit at a table right next to the band and have a relatively easy conversation while enjoying the music and company.
3. The beer selection is amazing and while you can get your regular beer, I would advise that you try something new. What's on tap rotates, you can see the previous taps above the windows that line the main dining area.
4. Prices at Trio reflect your tastes. So if, like me, you really like the Kasteel Quadruple Stout, $11, you'll start to feel it in the wallet quickly. However, there are equally great tasting beer ranging from ~$7. P.S. give a quadruple a try you won't be disappointed and give yourself a good 2 hours after to recoop as it is 11% alcohol.
5. Trio also has a food menu and while it is small, I must say that what I've had was good. Of course, there is a large selection of cheese and should you need help choosing the staff is always very helpful. The tiramisu wasn't the best I've had, small portion and nothing to shout about.
All in all I must say that Trio is now one of my favorite places as a local and thoroughly recommend it.
Post Thanksgiving week....OBX respite in between holidays!! Â Our fav haunts are open all year 'round but how lovely to find a new place while here. Trio is a retail wine, beer, cheese and assorted goodies shop with a cozy bar/restaurant on the side.
We had a wonderful time with our server Sonnet who made excellent food and wine recommendations. Â Starters included red wine and a cheese sampler. Segundo was sharing the amazing grilled three cheese and truffle oil panini and the Mediterranean nachos. Beer flights to wash them down...of course. Â The finale was noshing on pumpkin roll, apple/cranberry crisp and Italian cream cake while sipping a sparkling Cava Rose. Â
Lots of laughter some fun pics great wine and food all enjoyed in an outstanding venue! Â Needless to say several bottles of wine went home with us.
Cheers!!
9 of us went here while on our vacation, my friends brother raved about it. He had good reason. The atmosphere is casual yet on the upscale side, especially upstairs with a couple settings of dark leather sleek furniture and a red felt pool table.
5 of us did the beer tasting, the owner himself gave a great details and history of the types of beer they have and why they carry them. It was so much fun and you actually walk away with knowledge for a little small talk at  your next dinner party. Â
4 of us tried the wine tasting and took part in their restaurant week menu, which was versatile and delicious and helps you ease out of your comfort zone with a few twists on familiar foods. Â
The staff was accommodating and knowledgeable even down to what foods and wine pairs well with Purple haze cheese (Lavendar cheese)
P.s. For the girls . . . Â I gotta tell you the bathroom is cute and clean, very important : )
I really wish we had a place like this near my house.
Didn't eat but would on my next visit. Great selection of wine, cheese and beer. Lots of great beers on tap and a shelf with the on deck beers tap handles showing what is coming. Sunday was half price draft, which was awesome. Great selection of bottled beers and the latest seasonals. The cheese selection is unsurpassed in OBX.
Review Source:Great beer and wine selection. Easily the most beers on tap I saw while in the OBX. Location and atmosphere aren't great, just in a roadside plaza, and the store and restaurant are connected, but the live music was a nice touch. Cheeseboards are amazing and always changing. We came here twice on our week visit in the OBX simply for the cheese. Cool place to hang out and stays open a little later than most other spots around. For the area definetly 4 stars.
Review Source:Loved this place!! They had a huge assortment of wine and beer and the store part is great too. Â Everyone is super friendly here! Â we came after a dinner out somewhere else and wished we had eaten here. Â We did get the cards and a try all the different wines, which was a lot of fun! My husband got a flight of beer and he loved that too. Â There were so many things on the menu i would have loved to try like the cheese plate and some of the panini's that sounded delish. Â Can't wait til next year, wish they would open a Trio by my house!
Review Source:I went here for a light dinner with my girlfriend and I was blon awayby the entire experience! From the second you walk through the door there is a massive well thought out selection of wine and beer to buy sorted by region. I went for the dinner though so we sat at a table and my gf got the wine card so she was able to sample as she pleased the 2o something different wines there, I had their cask ale and it was amazing. we got a cheese plte and some crostini and I cant say enough good things about this place. you mus come here
Review Source:My wife and I stopped in there tonight and we had such a good time that I felt obligated to write a review. Â Jarrod, the bartender was extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Â He suggested several beers that I had never tried before and they were all homeruns. Â I also went with his Panini suggestion and loved it. Â After we tried out beers at the bar, he showed us where they were on the retail side so we could easily take a couple of six packs home with us.
This is how service should be and the next time we are in the Outer Banks we will certainly be stopping in again. Â Great beer selection and it is rare to get that sort of attentive service anywhere anymore.
Knowledgable and friendly staff! Â They went out of their way to order a hard to find IPA for me and took the time to talk to us and get a feel for our preference in wines. Â So far, every bottle they have suggested has been a hit and fun to try. Â Looking forward to our next visit. Â I
Review Source:Trio is a really nice place to relax and enjoy some great wine and great beer. Â Their selection of beer and wine is among the best I've seen in any one location, never mind in the little ol' quiet Outer Banks.
The wine kiosks are really unique - kind of a credit card deal where you can sample wine by the taste, half glass or full glass.
They have live music about 4 times a week which on both visits have been very good.
It is a bit pricey, so plan on dropping a few dollars here. Â This has become one of our must-go-tos on our trips to Kill Devil Hills.
If you stay for a bit there is a service (not associated with Trio) that will drive you and your car home ($5 up front and $3 a mile) - Â a very safe alternative. Â "OBX Drive U Home" 252-3055402
Stopped by for a cask beer tasting as part of Taste of the Beach, and I had a great time! The owners are very knowledgeable about beer, and there are tons on tap. They also try to keep a cask available, which is pretty unique. Trio's retail section is filled to the brim with good wine and beer choices, and they even have some tasty cheese and snacks to take home, too. I didn't get a chance to taste any of their food, but the folks sitting next to me enjoyed their paninis. Will definitely stop by the next time I'm in Kitty Hawk!
Review Source:I don't give out 5 stars everyday. This place rivals any wine bar I've been to--east  or west coast. Spacious, nice lighting, great selection of wines and beers. Nice intimate mezzanine. Live music. Good (small plate) dishes. They can get slammed, so plan ahead and come early. Or stay late ...it's a happening place.
Review Source:Great, great concept - wine and cheese bar with wine dispenser for your choice,  Select cheeses offered on menu daily, fancy bar food that pairs nicely with the wine.  Nice extensive beer menu on tap.  2nd floor offers lounge, bar, and pool table.  Very happening place for 20-40 somethings on Saturday night.  Enjoyed the place and concept so much we went back for lunch the next day.  Why not more stars?  The service.  Service was slow, inattentive (ex asked for water  - it never came), did not get orders right (they did comp us an extra cheese from the menu), engaged several different members and behavior was similar.  They are so close on the concept - it will not take much for this place to shine.  I do recommend for the wine and food - just be wary the service may not live up to the rest of the experience.
