Nice looking but small bar with food that's just a tad pricey and decent drinks (don't expect too many local brews, though). Â The service can vary greatly from attentive to not at all. Â Not bad for a place to hang out after a long day of work on campus -- especially if you want to avoid rowdy undergrads.
Review Source:We stopped in after a big UConn game (a win of course) so the place was packed. We ended up in the Blue Oak room next to the tavern which was fine. Â Our waiter Marcus did a great job taking care of us. Â The food was good and we enjoyed our experience. Â If I have one complaint it would be the shear number of staff who stopped by our table to fill our glasses or ask if everything was OK. Â It was almost comical in one 2 minute stretch at least four different people stopped at our table. Â I appreciate the concern (and this is not the only restaurant I've been in that overdoes this annoying habit) but they need to tone it down a bit. Â Personally I don't think anyone but our waiter needs to be asking if we need anything.
Review Source:True Blue Tavern is a good place to grab a drink if you are in the UConn area and want to avoid the college bar crowd. They have a nice selection of draft beers and the bar tenders make a great mixed drink. The food is also very good, if you are looking for an appetizer I would recommend the nachos. I would also ask what the soup of the day is since I always thought they had good soup.
This was my local watering hole when I was a grad student at UConn. The food is good and the bar tenders are friendly. The reason I give it 3 stars instead of the 4 is because it is in a hotel many of the food items can be expensive but they do have great happy hour specials on drinks and appetizers.
I creating this separate listing for the bar located within the Nathan Hale Inn, which is located on the south end of the UConn Storrs campus, mainly because more people come to the bar than stay at the hotel. I have no idea what the hotel lodgings are like, but I now have an idea of what the experience is like at the bar.
I visited True Blue yesterday with a bunch of fellow grad students to take in Happy Hour. During HH they run beer and wine specials, as well as offer a list of 5 appetizers at half price (from the Pre-Game section of the menu). That's pretty cool!
I ordered a Shock Top and shared some appies - homemade crab cakes, chipolte grilled shrimp, and the papusas. The beer was tasty, and not bad for $3.29. The crab cakes had big chunks of crab, which would have been excellent had they not been overly salty from a heavy dose of Old Bay seasoning. Lighten up a little next time, OK? The shrimp were large and plumb, tail on, and covered in their chipolte sauce. Messy, but pretty good. The papusas were thick home corn tortillas, similar to sopas, filled with black beans (the beans were on the inside of the tortilla, not on top). They were topped with a fresh salsa and served with something like a vinegar based coleslaw. All appies were good, not great.
The service was uneven. One server (I'm guessing the more experienced of the staff) was friendly, easy going, accommodating, and overall great. The other server was younger, more curt, and generally not very helpful. We had at least a dozen in our party, but this server would not help with splitting up the bill or just splitting out the totals. We grappled for close to 20 minutes trying to figure it out, as the HH prices were not reflected, nor were the single prices of each beverage listed. It was a real mood damper. I'm sure we were not the first or last group to visit this establishment, and it would behoove them to make things easier for their guests.
Since this is pretty close to my department, chances are I'll be back. I'll update if things improve or worsen over time.
