I'm surprised by the reviews of 4 and higher. This is nothing more than a country Denny's. The country décor is old and outdated. The vast majority of people in the restaurant were well over 70! I don't have a problem with people being older. I'm just setting the scene.

One of the big menu items is the Rib Eye which is featured in several entrees. It was only 7:00pm on a Sat night and they were already out of Rib Eye!

The staff was nice and the food was mediocre. I ended up with one of the steaks. I think it was the New York Strip. It was cooked medium (the way I like it). The meat was a little tough. It wasn't the best grade of meat. They only had 2 store bought steak sauces. I was disappointed that they didn't make their own.

    I won't be back.

    Best semi-dive bar in town.

We have eaten here on every visit to Leavenworth, maybe 10 times total.   We love their bar.  We have had truly excellent food, and some not so good.  It is kind of hit & miss.  This time we were told they had a new chef recently.  We had breakfast, husband had the eggs benedict which he was not very happy with.  The sauce was very blah, ham not very good.   I had a breakfast burrito that had eggs & tons of vegetables.  I really loved it.  Would have been a perfectly healthy breakfast, except for some reason they decided to fry the flour tortilla in oil before rolling all the good stuff up inside.  It was very tasty though.  Service was ok on this trip, pretty slow, maybe the restaurant was busy.  We were the only ones in the bar when we arrived, and it took about 1/2 hour to get our breakfast.   Couldn't really say service was "friendly", but they were pleasant.   reasonable prices and good drinks.  I'm sure we will be back on our next visit to try it again.

    Terrible service and food!

4 of us went there for a Wednesday night dinner because other Leavenworth restaurants were busy - big mistake!

The lounge featured locals in T-shirts and service slow enough that we passed on it and went into the restaurant.   Seems like the staff is not engaged in any kind of customer service ethic.  After ordering and waiting over an hour our steak and fish meals arrived.

The fish was cool and glazed looking and the medium rare sirloin was medium and tough.  Never a smile from the staff as we ate about half of it before paying and leaving.  Pricing was way to high for value and ambiance.

I recommend South in Leavenworth and many others before Tumwater - apparently the management is in need of Restaurant Impossible to do a makeover!

It's a pricey place and the kids drinks don't include refills which I have never seen before. It's a very small place but really decorated cute. I had a Philly cheese steak and it. Was. Amazing.... Seriously the best I have ever had. The bread was good there wasn't too much flavoring but not to little. The bread they use is very good. I will be coming back again for this Philly. I'll probably be dreaming about it until then.

The worst pasta I've tried! Too heavy cheese on top which is totally not match with the pasta, and the price is not reasonable. The only star I give is the service and the environment

Best music in Leavenworth. It's not country. It's not gospel, but you get some regular Bob Dylan, Dave Matthews, The Beatles, and some Jack Johnson while you enjoy your Bavarian breakfasts or your traditional American country fare.

The restaurant isn't that fancy. The decor goes well with the seasons. The lady's bathroom is a little bit awkward, but you know what, that's ok.

The spicy German sausage you get with the Bavarian breakfasts isn't that spicy, but you can choose any of the different mustards and add that flavor you really desire.

One awesome thing at the Tumwater is that they let you substitute fruit for the potatoes and toast you usually get with country style breakfasts.

The bar is pretty cool, a great place to watch a college football game on a cold, rainy day in fall.

WOW. This last review I left did not include the bad service we had in the bar for breakfast and bloody marys in 2011 and again with the same bartender in 2012 this past weekend.  6 of us came in.  We had our id's check right away...but it took over 20 minutes to get water and bloody marys.  While we set there two or three locals came in and sat down and got a drink right away.  Just for one bloody mary and breakfast we were there about a hour and a half.  My husband actually left and went to another place down the road and had 3 beers before we could rejoin them.  The waitress asked if she did something to make him leave?? YEAH! We were thirsty! It was hot! We will go back here again for drinks and music at night because that is not so bad. We were in there the night before and the place was slammed but we got a beer in less than five minutes. When we had breakfast there were only 6 people in the bar and most people waiting tables in the other room were making their own drinks.  Funny thing same thing happened last year.

Ok. I am a local, and I work in the food service industry. Normally, I have a lot of patience and compassion when things go wrong during a meal. This just emphasizes how terrible this experience was. We were referred to this place by a friend for their breakfasts. This morning, we decided to try it out. We walked in, there was only one family at a table. We sat at a booth, and before my boyfriend and I could ask for water, the waitress was gone. We waited ten minutes before she came back to take even our drink order. I ordered a coffee and my boyfriend had a water. When she brought my coffee back, I took a sip, weakest coffee I have ever had. It tasted like she rebrewed the pot over old grounds. Then my boyfriend points out there is lipstick on my mug. I have washed dishes in a restaurant before, so I can tell what lipstick looks like after it's washed on a cup. This looked like the waitress's took a sip before she brought me the coffee. Then we waited 10
More minutes til we saw her and could get her attention to get me a new cup. She apologized and everything, and LEFT the lipstick cup on the table!
When she brought us or food, she then asked if I wanted her to take the cup. Uh duh!?
So we get our food, and my boyfriend looks at his plate. There is a big beard hair on his plate, next to his food, but in plain sight! The eggs weren't even salted and peppered, toast was soggy, pancake was incredibly dense. Basically, the best thing we ate on the plate were some mediocre sausage links and smuckers grape jelly. Really, no good. And like a lot of the reviews before this one, I would rather have eaten at McDonald's. At least we could get decent coffee and full from breakfast. Ridiculous.

My brother and I decided to spend a weekend exploring Leavenworth, not realizing that most of the town pretty much disappears after 6 pm. So being young Portlanders, looking for something to do, we went on the search for an open bar. We walked past Tumwater once or twice and finally I suggested we go in.

We opened the door to the sound of an amazing vocalist, looked at each other and decided that this was definitely the place. So we grabbed a table in front and were immediately helped by the waiter. He brought us a few samples of beer to help make our decision and was happy to answer any questions we had. The service was prompt, our beers were never empty for long (neither were our water glasses for that matter) and they were incredibly friendly.

We found out the same band was playing again the next day so we decided we'd have dinner there and just hang out for the evening. Again, great service! We both ordered the fish and chips, they were excellent! It seems like more often than not, fish and chips end up being mediocre at best but these were great.

If I find myself back in Leavenworth I'll definitely be stopping back in.
Also, the KC Brakes band plays there often so if you're planning on being in the area, look them up too.

My husband and I were in Leavenworth for an overnighter and had gotten in later than we had expected. So we were in the twilight hour of lunch and 'dinner'.

Apparently in Leavenworth, they stop and close up shop for 'lunch hours' at 3pm and some places don't open until 5pm for 'dinner'.

This was one of the only places that were open at 3pm so we wandered in.

We were greeted by a hostess dressed in a Bavarian costume and then seated in a booth.

There was one other family in the restaurant with a small baby.

We looked at the menu and my husband decided he wanted some nachos for an appetizer. This was a big mistake.

First, it delayed our lunch order since the waitress decided to not even put our order in until she felt we had finished our appetizer. I appreciate the gesture but wished she had asked what we preferred since *I* didn't want any nachos but was forced to wait as well.

Secondly, we both heard the microwave go off and when his nachos arrived, we could see why. It had been thrown on a plate with cheese and some ground up meat and microwaved until it melted. It was the saddest place of nachos I had seen. Pretty sure we could've done it ourselves for cheaper.

Then our food finally arrived and I had ordered the grilled cheese with fries for nostalgia sake. I had to pay extra for my fries (which I think is kinda crappy). The sandwich was dry and didn't have much to it. I had hoped it'd have more flavor or been left on the griddle longer to actually 'golden' up vs. just looking like toast and melted cheese.

My husband ordered a Coke and it was noted all over the menu (and by the waitress) that you could have only ONE refill. This seemed a bit absurd to put a limit on how many refills you could get.

The bartender/cook came by and gave him a refill when he saw him low and didn't give him any lip so perhaps it was just based on the server you had.

Overall, not the best food either of us ever had and we'd definitely try McDonald's before we'd try here again. At least you know the food you'd be getting at Ronald's House.

A sincere THANK YOU to Sandy and Jennifer for accommodating a bus full of travelers who's lunch plans got suddenly cancelled.

Everyone on board was happy with their Chicken Schnitzel or Angus Beef Hamburgers and Brownie Sundaes.

Not sure what the deal is with the negative reviews, but we liked this place quite a bit. We never ate/drank in the actual dining room, but the bar area is pretty cool.

It is dark and cozy, and the food does the trick (try the BLT if you aren't interested in the Bavarian options). Nothing negative at all - service was happy and quick, and the drinks were strong and tasty (the Love Potion is curious).

3 stars and perfectly "A-OK". Would definitely revisit on my next Leavenworth trip!

Fast friendly service.  Country home living decorations--European style?Try the schnitzel sandwich, tasty.  Free soda refills.  A bit ordinary for a restaurant in Leavenworth.

Very enjoyable experience! Two of us shared a Bavarian dinner of knackwurst and bratwurst with sauerkraut and potato pancake -- yum!  Service was top notch!  We hoped to return the next day for lunch but could not find a parking spot, even after circling several blocks for about 20 minutes -- probably because it was Oktoberfest and the entire town was crowded.  We wouldn't hesitate to eat here the next time we're in town.

Nothing special here. Had the football games on so we stayed. Had the special which was the smothered roast beef sandwich. It was alright.

I was in Leavenworth on vacation earlier this month, and the boyfriend and I ate here twice. Leavenworth has a pretty kitschy Bavarian theme, but Tumwater feels more nondescript, although they do have some Bavarian specialties. I was a little bummed at first that they weren't serving breakfast even though their breakfast menu was still posted at 5 pm on a Thursday when we stopped in for dinner, but the food we had was good and the service was fast. Our first trip in I got the Cobb Salad with a lemonade and the boyfriend got the Hawaiian Chicken Burger with ice water. The food was great for both of us, and the prices were really reasonable, especially in comparison with other area restaurants.

Ended up at Tumwater Inn again for lunch over the weekend when we were pressed for time before checking out one of the local plays. The atmosphere was a little different, partly because the restaurant was really busy and partly because all the staff were now wearing Bavarian themed attire. The waitress was nice enough to accommodate the boyfriend's request for the Hawaiian Chicken Burger again, even though it was on the dinner menu. I had the TBS & T, a grilled Turkey, Bacon, Swiss, and Tomato on sourdough. Again, we were both very happy with our meals and able to get out of the restaurant in plenty of time to make the play. I would definitely eat here again when in the area.

Although recommend by our hotel clerk...The food was terrible!! I can generally finish a meal, but three bites and I was done...at least they were gracious about not charging me! When the server asked about the meal, I told her frankly that it was inedible. Save your money for the great outdoor theater shows!!

My Wife is a German citizen and we frequently take trips to Germany. We were excited to try a new German place since they are so difficult to come by. The food here wasn't horrible, but it was extremely bland and didn't offer much in the way of good flavor. I had the Schnitzel Supper since I went for lunch. The schnitzel, which should be the best was the worst part of the meal. The red cabbage was probably the best, but red cabbage isn't really that difficult to get right. As a whole, I'm not impressed at all with any of Leavenworth's food. It seems like the restaurants are either lazy or incompetent and just banking off the fact that Leavenworth labels itself a Bavarian village (tourist trap).

There used to be a great place to find German food in Tacoma, but that place is now closed. However, Bratz in Seattle by far beats any place in Leavenworth. They serve curry wurst just like you'd find it at the street vendors of Berlin. I also, hear there is a place in Bellingham that is good, but I have yet to try that. I'm constantly looking for good places.

If you are serious about German food, Leavenworth is definitely not the place to go. It's definitely just a lot of hype.

I went to this place about 6 years ago and had a decent experience (great deep friend zucchini), then returned about 4 years ago for breakfast and had an atrocious experience with the server who seemed to have wanted to walk out on her job...ugghh....then went back this April and was next door at the Post Office, which was packed!  I went to check out the good 'ol TW and it was dead, about three people in the place, and it seemed as if there were people smoking some something green in the closed dining area...I walked in and then right out...there was no way I was going to take my chances yet a 3rd time and be burned by this place.  Perhaps if they spent less time burning herb, they may have more devout patrons.

Very small bar-live coffee house music Fridays/Saturdays.  Did I mention it was a very small bar? This place would be 1 1/2 stars without the live music. The table next to us ordered a meal and the wait staff forgot to put the order in. My wife loved the mojitos!

One of the greatest disappoinment in our life would be, dining in at Tumwater Inn Restaurant and Lounge. Things started way wrong as soon as the waitrest stepped in. She lacked on customer service... Seriously... how long does it take to fill up four glasses with water? My husband had to asked if they were serving bread while we we waited for our food. She didn't really have much to say, and walked away... then few minutes later, she brought us this four slices of bread and honestly, they were aweful like it taste like they were old. Also, our waitrest didn't bother to hand the beverages in a timely manner, but rather almost to the end. You know how waitrest should keep checking on customers from time to time, to see how they were doing and if they need anything; she didn't do that.  Besides that, what really bothered us and it might have bothered other customers as well, was we over heared the employees talking about a customer who was basically picky with the food they want and how weird it was... so that was stranged and as customer... I don't want to hear restaurant employees to be talking about customers when they have things to do.

The food tasting didn't meet our standard especially for how much it cost.
My husband wanted to walked out right after his first bite, but asked him not to. His meal cost $19.00, but in reality, base upon the presentation, taste and the amount, it shouldn't even cost near the asking price. The rest of us, we ordered their angus burger and non of us thought it was good.  We love food and we know whats good quality and what not. Our burger was rubberish dry like it was 24hrs old topped with imitation cheddar cheese. We didn't even bother finishing our food because it was that disappointing.

For what its worth, this place is actually not listed as a "restaurant" in the free leavenworth map they provide for tourist. We wish we knew about that before coming to this restaurant.

We had better German food in other restaurants in Leavenworth that actually come close to the taste of food in Germany.

Locals may disagree, but this is definitely not for tourist especially with higher standard.

Even after a night of tastebud-deadening carousing, the food here was still inedible.

I had the Bavarian breakfast, which consisted of 2 OK-tasting scrambled eggs, a potato pancake that was more like an onion pancake (yuck), one link of very gamy bratwurst, and a few slices of margarine-saturated "toast."

I ate about two forkfuls, and the rest went into the trash.

Next time I'm in Leavenworth, I'll make sure to roll out of bed early enough to catch breakfast at Mickey D's.

After searching for a place open on a Sunday morning when I wanted breakfast, I stumbled upon the Tumwater.  It was by no means a place to make a trip for but it satisfied my hunger.  The waitress was somewhat standoffish but by no means too grumpy.  It's worth a trip if you're looking for something where picky eaters might find something or when there's not much else open in town.

I'm done with the Tumwater Inn. Done.....done, done, done. I've given it 4 chances to impress me after many reccomendations from locals, but I think it's safe to finally admit that this place blows.

Leavenworth is a tricky place to dine. Their local economy is fueled by tourists that come in for the plethora of festivals they host during the fall and winter, but most of the locals tend to really give off a "bitter" vibe regarding visitors. I have never seen it more apparent than in the restaurants. I have had grumpy service in quite a few locations and it just really bothers.me. How can so many people be bitter and grumpy and crappy towards the people that drive your economy and create jobs for your town!!??  Of course, not ALL of the places I have visited in Leavenworth have had this level of service.....some shop and restaurant owners have been friendly and prompt and happy to be there, but so many don't. Tumwater Inn is one of those establishments.

Before I spew out the endless negatives, I will say this about the Tumwater...it does have a little, cozy bar setting and is always decorated so festive for every season. It's warm, the bar rail always looks so inviting, and it just sort of "draws" you inside. I'm here to tell you, though, if you are a tourist, this place is not as inviting as it seems from the outside.

3 out of the 4 times I have patronized the Tumwater, I have been stuck dealing with the crabbiest, crotchity, grizzled old lady servers I HAVE EVER experienced in my lifetime. No joke. Attitude.Attitude. Attitude. These old ladies seem to hate life, hate their jobs, and they don't seem to have a problem giving off that vibe. If you get an older female server, I would just get up and walk out.

The food......wow....well....let's just say this is under par to Denny's. Over-priced for hungry tourists with the tiniest portions you could imagine. My latest entree choice was the "Schnitzle Supper" (to stay festive with the Oktoberfest theme), and I have never payed $12 for a more pathetic "supper" in my life: a decent, small -sized potato pancake with an 8 oz. (approx.), deep-fried and tasteless hunk of breaded something that tasted more like overdone chicken-fried steak  than weiner-schnitzel. This was accompanied by a small compote/ramakin of pickled cabbage.......seriously maybe 2 tablespoons of it!! Whatta joke....

I got to tell you, I have always been drawn to the coziness of this little place and I love their bar-rail set-up AND I never really knew where to go in Leavenworth (other than Katzenjammers, which I HIGHLY reccomend for steak dinner) This has all changed after this most recent visit for Oktoberfest. After this disaster of a lunch, I scoped some knew places out and even Uncle Uli's now has a better set-up for sports on the big screen and has a great little bar atmosphere.

I will NEVER patronize Tumwater again, and I hope you will take heed to this review and avoid it at all costs!
