This review is about something I saw. The food and drinks and music were great as usual, but what I saw is what impressed me.
Last night, an older African-American woman left her seat at the bar to go to the restroom and a young (20-ish) white girl and her friends (two girls and one boy also in their twenties) moved in and one of them took the woman's barstool. When the older woman returned to the bar she politely told the your gilr that she woud like her seat back. The young woman sneered and said "I don't think so."
The older lady asked once again, politely, for her seat. and the young woman again refused. The older lady got the attention of Chris the bartender and said that the young girl took her seat. Chris asked the young girl to give the seat back to the older lady and the young girl simply said "No."
Chris then called over Tom the chef and manager who asked the girl to give the seat back to the older woman. The young girl replied "She got up. She doesn't OWN the chair."
The manager firmly told the girl that she had to get up. The girl then waved her hand in the older African-American woman's face and said, rudely "I guess these people think they run this town now!"
When the manager heard this, he asked the girl to leave the bar. After more rude, racist and crude comments, the security guard was called over the throw all four of the young white kids out.
Way to go Underground 119!
You now have a customer for life out of me!
I really enjoyed my visit here. Downtown Jackson is like a desert wasteland for dinner options, but my colleague and I found this thanks to Yelp! Â It has the feel of an old 1920's era Speakeasy, with a great band, dancing and all. The food was tasty, although way too overcooked, like most food in the south. I highly recommend it as a happy hour location, as they have some great drink specials. Service was among the best we received in Jackson. I will definitely go back again.
Review Source:There was not much else within walking distance of our hotel, and definitely less that had the option of live music, which we wanted to hear, so we trekked over, not expecting much.
This is one of my favorite places I've hit up on any of my business trips. Not only were they handicap accessible (you'll have to send someone down to make sure they open the gate on the side of the building), but they have gender neutral bathrooms! Way to be inclusive Jackson, Mississippi.
Better yet, their menu was diverse (if not a little pricey), and had some fun vegetarian options, like a portabello burger (which someone got and said was good), and the sauteed mushrooms and cheese grits (which I got, and was incredibly tasty, if small). Two members of our group got the Shrimp Po boy, and both said it was great. I also split some of the sweet potato fries with a friend - amazing, and also, their homemade ketchup was the best I've ever head.
The only let downs? A) Our server seemed a little distracted, and brought out two mistakes (both for the same person, worse yet) and B) the Donut Bread Pudding, which seemed exciting, was way too sweet and not at all what we'd hoped for.
That being said, the yummy food, live music, interesting art and speakeasy-esque atmosphere made it a super fun place, and I'd be back, if I traveled there more often.
This place already has such incredible reviews that not much more can be said. The food is out of this world, yeah it's pricey but who cares it's amazing. The owner is also amazing. Just believe what everyone says this place will leave you with sweet dreams of going back. Portobello fries and crawfish pie is GOD SENT!!
Review Source:Non-descript location, but what a great place for tasty food and the friendliest service. Â Ashley is the best! Â I tried the ham and crawfish gumbo and shrimp sliders. Â Soooo good! Â The place wasn't very crowded at the time we went but there was a live pianist. Â Give it a whirl - you won't be disappointed!
Review Source:It is hard to rate this place. Â The ambiance and the entertainment was good (4 stars). Â Some of the dishes were good but then there was the bowl of chili and that waitress forgot my garlic bread, then forgot the utensil, then i ordered goat cheese hushpuppies, 1 out of the 6 had goat cheese. Â The waitress smiled but did nothing to correct these minor inconsistencies. Â i will go back but will seek another waitress and rate again.
Review Source:My husband and I really enjoyed the crawfish pie and I loved the peanut butter /cayenne pepper ice cream . I know that sounds odd but it was very tasty, not hot at all. Chef Tom Ramsey came by and talked me into trying it. Great place to go and hang out especially if you enjoy the jazz/ blues theme .

Tom,
Oops. So sorry I scared the daylights out of the good people of Jackson with my 4-horsemen style doom and gloom weather reporting. I've heard that everyone has been hunkering down and eating all the Vienna Sausages and bottled water they bought on Monday in anticipation of the storm I told them would ravage their homes and eat their loved ones. I guess I missed the mark a little bit.
I'm willing to make good on it, though. I heard you were offering 1/2 price hurricanes and free "Land Mass" shooters. Tell you what...instead of you taking the hit on that, just send me the bill for the discounts and I'll put it on my black AmEx. I make so much money scaring people that I can afford to throw some of it around on drinks.
Looks like we're packing up and heading back to the studio this weekend. I'll let you know when I'm coming back to the land mass between Mobile and New Orleans.
Take care,
Jimmy C

This is a great mix of a cool bar to have drinks and listen to live music with a really slick ambiance as well as a great restaurant. Â Me and my wife were visiting from out of town and really had a great time here. Â We showed up for happy hour drinks and ended up staying for dinner. Â The chef has assembled a menu that are great modern interpretations of classic southern and cajun dishes. Â It is very reasonably priced as well.
Review Source:Great ambiance and Sangria...however where's the crawfish and ahi tuna :-/
They were out of a few items on the menu, but overall the meal was excellent. It's "froo-froo" food so if you're thinking of taking your 82 year old grandfather, think again:) Â Mine had trouble finding something on the menu he enjoyed but the rest of the group had no complaints!
The trout was scrumptious as was the lamb burger (try it with egg!).
And as mentioned with the Sangria, though too much ice, it was very good. Not too sweet and not too dry!
The musical entertainment for the evening consisted of two guys switching back and forth playing piano and singing...added a nice soundtrack for the meal.
Also, the chef kindly greeted us and talked at length with my grandfather to help him find something bland and simple for his taste buds ;)
We were in town for the Kevin Hart show (which was f!?#&$g awesome!!!!) and decided to pre-game it here before the show. The waitress was terrible, with no plausible explanation, because at 5pm on a Friday night this place WAS NOT even full. (I've never been to town where the parking meters, downtown, on a Friday, don't need to be fed!) The chef on the other hand was exceptional, and was more attentive then the waitress. He helped me make a wine selection and answered questions about the menu, and was very courteous and knowledgeable. The best thing were the sweet potato fries. Sad to say, the lobster Mac n cheese had the consistency and taste of hamburger helper. The establishment is spacious and is a great lounge for after work. This is definitely a must see if visiting Jackson, mainly because there ain't much else to do!
Review Source:Gee... it is kind of scary for a single girl gong out by herself in a city that I do not know too well. Â But I would get so darn bored sometimes at night! I usually stay in Ridgeland and I just could not find anything I really enjoyed. I live in New Orleans, and I can walk three blocks from my house and check out blues all night. And I do not live anywhere close to Downtown! So finally one night I became determined and searched and searched. I found this place but I was a little scared of going by myself.
It was downtown, it was in a basement, and I would have to park on the street. There is parking in the rear but it is reserved for VIPs. They should make exceptions for single ladies. I would gladly pay for my parking spot for a few hours. I imagine on most nights during the week they do not fill up all their parking... who knows. At any rate I ventured one night and I was so glad I did.
The place is tastefully decorated. Elegant, unpretentious, classy. For the kind of place it is it is a good deal. Most nights there is no cover. The drinks are not cheap but not out of line with classy bars. The food was better than most bar food anywhere. And again, the price is right. The waitresses and the bartenders are pretty attentive. The quality of the music playing most nights was surprisingly good. I enjoyed myself and did not want to leave. I like that the music starts early here. Maybe too early. Sometimes I cannot make it because I am still working. But it is usually over by midnight. That works for me. I can sleep good and get an early start next day. Here in New Orleans, the music is getting started at midnight jsut about everywhere! I usually have to go out mostly on the weekend and all the places I like are packed.
You go down though some steps from the street level. I was worried in case of a fire or something getting stuck down there. But there are other exits from the club and they are at street level. The good thing is that most of the regulars using up the parking, there is usually enough parking on the street. I had fun here and will return! I hope this place never shuts down. Go and spend your money here. They are doing a good thing!
I am originally from New Orleans, and I have been hard pressed to find a live music venue similar to what I enjoy. Did some research and found Underground 119. After viewing their website, the boyfriend and I definitely wanted to check it out. It's located downtown but we had no trouble parking since we arrived well before the live show. We had dinner here, and the food was fabulous. Their menu is not your typical bar/lounge food. Our server was excellent, and the owner stopped by each table to ensure everyone was enjoying the evening. There are couches right in front of the stage for a more intimate feel. The live jazz music was fantasitc! We will definitely become regulars here.
Review Source:One of the swankiest bars/blues clubs I've ever been to. So nice in fact that you wouldn't really expect to find something of this caliber in Jackson, MS. Located in a basement, the club is an open space that has tables for dining, a full bar, an area for performers to perform, and a kitchen. The food is very delicious. Was lucky enough to attend a private event here. Will definitely be coming back whenever I get the chance. The acts change regularly, but the music at the event I attended was great. The chef is also a really nice guy and teaches cooking classes as well!
Review Source:We went to Underground 119 after reading about it on http://EatJackson.com. We arrived around 6:30, well before the live music began. First, I loved the ambiance. The seating area is neatly arranged with lovely dark wood tables and chair or chair bench combos. There is one long bench seat that runs along the side wall. The tables were nicely set with black table cloths and white napkin flatware rolls. There was focused light at the tables and bar, while the rest of the place was dimly lit.
Our server promptly greeted us and was very attentive throughout our visit.
We started with happy hour two-for-one tapas from a select list and two-for-one house wine (McManis). We chose Portobello Fries and Sauteed Crab Fingers. The fries were excellent as was the dipping sauce, which was described on the menu as Creole Dressing. The crab fingers were good also, although quite small and served in quite a bit of brown butter (like would see in New Orleans-style BBQ Shrimp) . Happy Hour is from 4-7.
Then, I ordered Fish Tacos and my companion ordered Crab Quesadillas. Although I normally am not a fan of guacamole on my fish tacos, it worked very well here. The tortillas were corn, which I prefer, and the large snapper finger inside was topped with yummy guacamole, slaw, and fresh pico de gallo. They were delish! And the portions were larger than any other tapas I've had. The quesadillas were also good, and everything came out quickly.
I'll surely be going back to try some of the other menu items... especially the Crab Cakes (claiming to be the best in town) and Seared Sashimi-style Tuna.
