Really? Â They charged me extra for requesting onions on my chicken salad when I visited in June for lunch. Â That's pretty poor PR I'd say when most people like onions on their salads to begin with...it's not like I asked for shrimp or additional chicken. Â Ridiculous. Â However, the salad was good and the produce was fresh.
Review Source:Great Service! They brought out the kid orders as soon as they were ready without us asking! They know how to keep the little ones happy. Good food. Oysters were a bit on the over breaded side, but the rest of the meal was good. I may skip the vinaigrette dressing next time.
Burgers were tasty!
Poor reviews of another restaurant caused us to head for the "second-place" suggestion - it was WELL worth it!! Â Tucked away in a former old feed mill, up a flight of stairs around back, we found a fantastic dinner spot!! Â All of our food was excellent, and the battered fries were exceptionally tasty. Â Our waitress was all over everything, and took great care of us! Â We'll be eating there again on our next trip through Harrisonburg!!
Review Source:This place did a 180. Previously I thought the food wasn't that good, but after a more recent visit, I will make it a regular. It seemed there was a concerted effort to make the place better as our waitress asked specifically of we had been there recently and elaborated on their new specials and barbecue (which was really good!) Calamari was tasty. We were there on a Thursday and they had a great deal on pitchers. 7 bucks for a pitcher of dogfish head IPA. Wednesday is half off wine so I will def go back then. The half sized portions are nice too. Perfect amount. Great value and great taste.
Review Source:I've been going to Union Station off and on since they opened a couple of years ago but I'm not going back. The atmosphere is very good, the food is good (never disappointing, never amazing), and they always have a few nice beers on tap.
But, the service is consistently bad. I've gotten terrible service in the bar and the dining room on separate visits over the course of many months. I can write it off if it happens once or twice but not when it's this frequent. We recently went back and gave it another shot and it was still bad. I don't know what the deal is. The servers are nice enough and there seems to be plenty of staff. It takes a long time to place an order; things we ask for never show up; and the it takes a long time for the food to come. We often feel like they have simply forgotten about us. I suspect the servers are being managed poorly. I can't think of why else competent-seeming servers consistently provide awful service.
I want Union Station to succeed but I'm going to avoid it until something changes.
Union Station has been my new go to bar when I come through town. Â Good food, good service, good drinks, and definitely good prices. Â We always get the fried pickles and the last time I went I ordered the grilled salmon and it was perfect. Â It wasn't dry, deliciously grilled, and not floating in butter. Â Love the atmosphere, too!
Review Source:Union Station has excellent atmosphere, great food and good prices. I always enjoy a visit to the Union bar or restaurant area, other than last night, Monday, 6/25/12.
I was told I could not take my left overs to go. I had ordered and eaten about 3/4 of my fried pickles and decided to take the remaining amount home. I was told they don't do that any more because of people ordering massive quantities of the bar menu and taking it home. We all had drinks and 2 of us ordered something off the bar menu, one thing each. I clearly was not ordering a bunch of stuff to take home uneaten, so if I just didn't finish my food I can't take it home?! I find this highly irregular and it would prevent me from coming back to patronize Union Station.
This is an excellent restaurant in downtown Harrisonburg! The comfortable atmosphere and pleasant wait staff made my experience tonight very enjoyable and the food was delicious! Apart from my amazing meal, one of my favorite things about this restaurant was the historic feel to it. It feels like you are sitting in a train car and we even got lucky enough to sit by the window overlooking the tracks. Now onto the food... I ordered the Salisbury Steak and it was crazy good. The french onion gravy was perfect and it was served with delicious mashed potato and garlic bread. My parents enjoyed there dishes as well and we all left very satisfied and with enough room for ice cream. The prices range from under 10 if you order soup and a sandwich to 20 if you order a steak, so not that bad. If you are in town, I definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a nice sit down meal.
Review Source:Excellent food and service. Â Have been there a number of times and found it to be good food with good value. Â When my son got married down in Harrisonburg we held the rehearsal dinner there. Â We had 40 people and everyone raved about the food including my sister and her family who always dine in the 5 star restaurants of manhattan. Â Cassie , one of the owners and the catering manager helped me plan the event and totally delivered on everything she promised. Â It was just wonderful, great food, fresh and flavorful with great ambiance. Â Don't hesitate to hold an event there. Â You won't be disappointed.
Review Source:Union Station is a hidden gem in downtown Harrisonburg, While it may not be as popular like such hot spots as Jack Brown's or Dave's, the food and drinks may be the best in the Burg. The place is very historic - with pics surrounding the walls of Harrisonburg years ago. While the dining area is nice, we always head straight to the bar area when we come here. It's entirely separate from the dining room, up a small flight a stairs past the front door.
Any bar that has Dogfish Head on tap is awesome in my book. I'd recommend getting the tall glasses of beer, as they are huge mugs. You definitely get your money's worth. Everything on draft is $1 off before 7pm so that's also a plus.
Food - Order the Harvati Prime Rib bites. Oh my god. Possibly the most delicious dish I've tasted at any restaurant. We ended up ordering the bites, fried oysters, and the roasted meatballs. I really wish we had just ordered 3 servings of the Harvati Prime Rib bites - they're that good. The fried oysters were very good, actually. The meatballs were just okay, but they only cost $3.75 so it was a good deal.
I'd definitely recommend this place. The food and drinks are great and I haven't even mentioned the service, which is GREAT. When you're asked 3 different times by 3 different people if you need another drink, that's pretty damn good.
Blessed be the intractable force of eminent domain. Ignore subsequent economic interests, avoid considering the meaning of "public use" on compulsory purchases and reject the implications.
After all, good food exists in a world of constitutional neutrality.
I took my GF's family here for lunch around the turn of the New Year. I was instantly enamored by the well done brickwork that comprises Union Station's exterior. Inside, the owners have striven to do the location historical justice. The walls are replete with photos of a bygone era. The décor tries to capture an age that has passed, but the freshness of the furnishings seems to betray the desired sentiment.
Overall, the service was 6.25/10. Yes, I'm that specific.
Our prime rib appetizer arrived with a mouthwatering havarti cheese and was served with crostini. As one of the tastiest pairings of perfectly cooked meat I've encountered in my culinary adventures, it should not, cannot and must not be overlooked.
The horseradish cream completes the wholesale deliciousness of this appetizer.
After such a grand introduction to Union Station's offerings, our entrées seemed doomed to failure. How could they possibly hit that mark of greatness? But I'm open-minded and ever wary of self fulfilling prophesies, though even a conscious preoccupation against foregone conclusions couldn't compel prevarication to my assessment of the main courses.
The rib eye simply couldn't meet my expectations. It was the same type of ordinarily tasting meat that any backyard griller could whip up any day of the week. This begs the question: If I can cook mediocre food, why would I go elsewhere to pay for it?
Her Salisbury steak on the other hand, was phenomenal. I happily stole more than a few bites. The portion was large enough for her to take some home. The mashed potatoes were excellent and did a great job of saturating all the au jus from the steak. And at less than twelve dollars, the pricing wasn't bad either.
So while clearly our experience was overall superb, I'm not sure that Union Station has it all figured out just yet. Improvements to service and some work on at least one of their entrées would be advisable. But if you do decide to go, get the prime rib with havarti appetizer.
You can thank me later.
Union Station Restaurant and Bar offers very nicely priced, delicious food and drinks! Â The bar itself is nicer than most entire restaurants in Harrisonburg. This is, by far, my favorite restaurant in town!
They have a wide selection of entrees, including a great selection of gluten-free choices. Whether you want a perfectly cut/cooked steak, or the best burgers in town (I dare you to try The Cannonball and not love it), a beautifully prepared, healthy portion of Swordfish or Salmon, or any of their fresh, hearty salads you will leave full, happy, and not too light in the wallet. Every item on the menu is well-priced. The specials are always wonderful and you must leave room for their heaven-inducing desserts, all baked fresh in-house. They also offer a very inexpensive and appealing happy hour menu. Â
The service is always top notch and the ambience cannot be beat. There isn't a bad spot in the whole place, with a large main dining room, a smaller, more private second dining room, and a very spacious separate bar room with both tables and bar stools. Â
Bottom line: Don't waste your time driving around looking for the best place to eat in Harrisonburg, Union Station is that place.
Union Station is one of Harrisonburg's best eateries. Â The food is fantastic - we've enjoyed ever meal! Â The atmosphere is upscale but comfortable and casual. Â They are extemely accomodating, even on Parents weekend. Â The menu has a nice range of sandwiches, salads, and entees - something for everyone. Â The prices are reasonable and the staff is good. We've eaten here several times and were always very pleased.
Review Source:The ambiance of the restaurant is okay, not as fabulous as other reviewers make it out to be. Â We were seated at a table right in front of one of the floor to ceiling windows. Â The sun was directly in our face and there were no blinds that could be pulled down to block it.
Our waitress was terrible, she may have had too many tables. Â She was slow and did not seem to be able to multi-task and do more than one thing at a time. Â
I noticed that people who ordered AFTER us got their food BEFORE us. Â When our food did come out, it was cold and over cooked, as if it had been sitting in the back for along time.
Don't waste your time or money going to this place unless you want bad service.
All aboard! Â Unique ambiance, historic surroundings and cool beer!
Hows that for a tag line? Â I went to Union Station with a very good friend who also had never been. Â Its an old train station converted into a fairly upscale restaurant and bar. Â More on the restaurant side if you ask me....
The restaurant features an uncrowded dining area - in fact one of the tables resides in an old elevator......with this place however, I only experienced "ups". Â
They have an impressive list of IPA's and Belgian beer. Â I personally love the Chimay (always pricey anywhere you go).
We ordered the fried oyster appetizer......twice! Â Why? Â Its twice as good as anything I could have expected so we had to have more! Â I even asked for raw horseradish and low and behold - they delivered.
The service is good - the bar is a little cozy but fun with historic photos of Harrisonburg over every table.
Thumbs up!
Well, unfortunately I had a bad experience here my first time.
Food: Food was good, but slightly low portioned. I wish I had more for the price I paid. Other than that, the food tasted good.
Service: Horrible. I'm sorry, but they are really slow and they forgot our orders. I don't care how good your food is, but your service has to match it. I don't want to wait 20 minutes for my beer because I am thirsty and starving. Also, try not to give attitude to your new customers, as that doesn't give a good impression. (We had a older looking lady)
Atmosphere: The decor is fancy and old looking. It isn't that bad, but I actually like the more modern and sleek theme. However, if you like this older looking theme, its all you.
Alcohol: Not a good price, as its costs $7 per beer? It is only a standard size collins glass, not even a mug. Have some better deals and maybe you'll see more customers.
The thing that made our experience was the slow, rude service. If you wish to experience this, please be my guest. I would recommend take out if you want their food.
Atmosphere: 5 Service: 5 Spirit Selection: 4 Food Quality: 4.5 Food Creativity: 4
Summary:
Privately owned with thoughtful touches in the menu, beer/wine/drink menu and decor. Â Well trained and friendly staff. Â Menu provides a somewhat safe but quality fare with some interesting touches.
So has it sunk in that Harrisonburg is not the mecca of food yet? Â It didn't take long for us to realize that fact. Â Another review site had more good reviews on Union so we gave it a shot and were very pleased. Â It might be 5 stars in Harrisonburg but im gonna leave a star out there for others to aspire to. Â
First off - heads up the entrance/parking lot is a little unusual because of being a reclaimed industrial building (which is cool). Â You will see the sign at the top of the building and you enter into that parking lot. Â Then there is a series of stairs leading up to the second floor. Â
Here is the big excitement for me - this place is not owned by a restaurant group or other "corporate" affair. Â I immediately thought it was because of the level and detail of the renovation. Â I have been to many small towns that have a cute and charming restaurant only to find out it was owned by a rest. group that had a bunch of stores. It is family owned - albeit an amazingly diverse group of contractors/restaurant folk/business consultant/bar keep. Â Kinda like a super group like new pornographers.
Anyways i wanted to post this because of the huge lack of restaurants here - and also to give props to a family biz "purposing" a site in a transitional area.
Loved this place for dinner! Came here last weekend while visiting my grandparents. The place is an old train station, so each booth is like a dining car in a train. It's very cute and cozy.
I had the Garden Grill sandwich, which included grilled veggies on a portobello with artichoke spread covered in provolone cheese on toasted sourdough bread. It was so delicious, but a little messy and difficult to eat. My mom had the cob salad which looked amazing! So much blue cheese!!
The service was friendly and energetic, very pleased overall. The whole place is very large so it shouldn't be difficult to get a table when it's busy. They also have a glass enclosed patio type room to eat in, looked really nice and you can see the train as it goes by.
