Alright, alright...alright.. so there aren't that many bars here, okay I get it. BUT WHAT THE HECK is up with some of the shady characters that come in this bar? The bartenders were pretty damn cool, but the uhm.. clientele had some scary moments. The karaoke host is wicked nice and the people I generally end up conversing with seem to have stories for days, which is awesome. But can there be a policy about some of the creepers that come in there to watch and freak people out? I know it's impossible, but hey why the heck not throw it out there.
The bar was really cool about a little get-to-gether I had there, much appreciated!
This bar has billiards and darts on the second floor, dancing on the first floor in the back, karaoke on the first floor in the front. Â
I heard this place is good for a ribeye steak for ten dollars or free burgers on Mondays during the football game, about 5pm till around 7pm if you're going for their food. Â Called to verify, went there and ordered their steaks rare. Â They have someone cooking it outside on a grill in front of their establishment. Â The person yells out your first name when it's ready. Â Be prepared to tip the guy as you pickup your burger or steak. Â I grabbed both steaks, just as someone was coming out, I put out my leg to hold the door, only to have one of the steaks knocked off and fall onto the sidewalk. Â I was not pleased. Â The person didn't see me, apologized and paid for another steak. Â The ribeye steak was rare, juicy, flavorful. Â I don't know how many steaks or burgers they have, but don't come towards the end of the game if you're going for their food. Â Free salted peanuts in the shell.
On 12/12/2011, I placed my order for two (New York) steaks rare at 1800 hours, didn't get my order till 1930 hours, one and a half hours later, suppose to be 120 degrees and my steak was well done, not rare. Â Trent was thawing steaks using the microwave. Â Not worth coming here, wasting two hours to finally get overdone steaks, get the burgers instead during the football game.
This was a good spot to pop in for a beer. The decor is Busch and Budweiser posters meets taxidermied animals, but I was pleasantly surprised with the free pool in the upstairs section! They really seem to have a little bit of everything going on in this place.
Pros:
FREE pool and darts
Nice staff
Cons:
It has a little bit of everything, so its not awesome at anything
There are a whole bunch of different bars here, but as I would always classify it when I would recommend it to passengers, the passengers stay on the first floor and the crew goes to the second floor! Â I wonder what that bar is like on a day that's not a Tuesday and after 10pm! (That was the only day that we'd port in Juneau).
I wondered down to the first floor a couple of times when I saw a passenger I knew and it was nice there, but I always really enjoyed it upstairs where my friends were. Â But what's not to like about this bar? Pool, food, cheap drinks, darts, music (upstairs they let us play our own music), and free wifi (that means everything to crew)!
Loved me some Alaskan white beer!
My feelings on the Viking are entirely mixed. The bar consists of many different areas with distinctly different crowds & vibes.
- Upstairs Billiards & Darts bar: 4-5 stars. I'm not sure if you have to pay to play pool or darts (my friends already had games going by the time I made it up there), but it's fun. You can get free peanuts from the bar, make a giant mess without getting yelled at, chug beer from pitchers, etc. This area had the youngest & most chilled out type of people at the Viking.
- Dance floor & bar in the back room: -5 stars. My gosh I have never been so creeped out in my life. There are terrible dancers, scary looking guys, odd looking girls, no DJ therefore no song requests, an odd stripper pole, and it smells horrible back there. Avoid this place. I love dancing, bring the dance party with me, and can pretty much dance anywhere...but I drew the line here. Ladies, avoid this place - way too many old creepy ugly dudes.
- Main bar with Karaoke: 3 stars. Mixed crowd - lots of old people, young people, crazy people. Watching karaoke is entertaining & there is a lady who walks around with jello shots & whipped cream.
