I was just driving by, the sign caught my eye. The food, price, & service were all great. Expect no frills, but what they do, they do very well.
Just over $5 for their small Chicken Croquettes w/ Pan Gravy & I was stuffed!!!
I'll definitely be back next time I find myself in the area.
After spending the weekend in NH, I can honestly say, the Village Kitchen would be a good reason for moving there. Â I though I had the "ins" on the most amazing breakfast ever - see review for Neighborhood Restaurant in Somerville, MA - but wow - I think Village Kitchen is now my new favorite, albeit, sadly, too far away for me to go to every weekend.
BUT - if you have a place in the area, or are visiting - Village Kitchen is a MUST for breakfast (and I've heard the lunch/dinner is great too!) Â Love the atmosphere - so rustic and homey, and the staff is super nice. Â Giant taxidermied bear in the front (great for photo opps...)
I thought we were original by ordering a Cinnamon Roll as breakfast appetizer, but alas, another reviewer had already done so - so that makes at least two of us, do it too! Â It comes with butter - totally unnecessary, but you're in vacation-land, so do what you want. Â What happens with your arteries in NH, stays in NH, right? Â
Then, we both (dainty ladies as we are) ordered the "Hungry Farmer" breakfast special. Â Not to split. Â One for each of us. Â See above - what happens in NH, stays in NH, including gained weight. Â The Hungry Farmer is a smorgasbord of almost every breakfast treat imagined: Â 2 eggs, french toast or pancakes, home fries, toast, bacon AND ham, and... baked beans? Â Yes, baked beans, the northern New England version of grits. Â Skeptical, yes. Â Good - Absolutely. Â They're good for your heart right? Â So that cancels out everything else! Â
Oh - and comes w/ coffee. Â All that for under $10. Â And it was all good. Â Great. Â
Would I prefer a "Hungry Farmer's Wife" with less of everything? Â *Ahem, suggestion to the peeps at Village Kitchen!* -Yes, b/c I felt bad only eating half, and those poor starving children in China, and leftover breakfast isn't good, but for that price, gluttony and wastefulness is worth it. Â I suppose...
Force yourself to walk off the meal at the nearby antiques places. Â And then plan on parking yourself on the beach/couch all day. Â PS- Cash only.
Can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet. I've been going to the Village Kitchen nearly my whole life, so I might be slightly biased when I say that this is the best breakfast place you will ever go to. Bias aside, know that this place is good. Any breakfast you get will be great and they are very flexible with substitutions. Service is also always excellent. In my roughly 20 years of going to the VK, the only problem my family and I have had is having to wait on the weekends because this place is so popular. I try to go here every time I'm at the lake.
Overall, go here. The food is great, the service is great, and the price is fair (less than $10 for any breakfast you get).
*As an aside, it is worth noting that the VK also serves lunch and dinner depending on the day. My review is based on breakfast, because that is what the VK does best. While lunch and dinner aren't bad at the VK, they are probably just average. Not something I go out of my way to do like a good VK breakfast.
I went here for my birthday with a friend. We walked in and, Holy Mother, what was that heavenly smell?
Fresh Cinnamon Rolls, My Friends.
We ordered one as a breakfast appetizer (it was my bday, no judging) and it was huge and light and amazing.
I ordered the 2 egg bkfst and it was cheap and tasty. My buddy's omelet looked to die for. it was huge and full of super veggies. All fresh and perfectly cooked. Sprawled out over this big plate.
If I lived closer I would consider going here over Sunshine and Pa's (and THAT is saying a lot).
The service was super fast and friendly.
Also important, they only take cash or check (probably only local checks). Worth the minor inconvenience.
We loved the Village Kitchen. Â Went there with fourteen people, including twin two year olds, and they were accommodating and knew how to handle a large party with kids. Â The food and service was fantastic and the price was good as well. Â Waitress was excellent. Â Would go back in a second!
Review Source:We were in Moultonborough for a long weekend and, having never been in the area before, I searched around Yelp for some places to eat. Â We had breakfast at the Village Kitchen every morning and loved it. Â The staff was super friendly and the service was fast. Â If we find ourselves back in this area, we will definitely be eating at the Village Kitchen again!
Review Source:I have to agree with most here. This place is just great, they offer the best breakfast in the area. Nothing in meredith even comes close, okay maybe George's diner does, but it's not as good. I have eaten lunch here, usually its after a long day of snowmobiling. It's great because you can park right on there lawn, and the trail runs beside it. They have comfort foods like meatloaf, mac and cheese etc... They also have a variety of fried fish which I have yet to taste. Anyways, yes the staff is super friendly and now that they have leveled the place off, my drink doesn't slide off the table. (true story) this place was sinking at one point.
Check it out....
Good solid meals, nothing fancy, no extras done well. Unpretentious, like eating at home.
They have simple breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, they do it well.
If you like diners, this is your place.
First come, first served, cash only. Tables, booths and a counter. Portion sizes that match their price, tasty and like eating at home (if you are good cook).
Every night is a different special, steak tip Monday, pork tenderloin wednesday, fish Friday, you get the idea. get the specail of the day, it's always great.
Breakfast is also excellent. The eggs are always done EXACTLY as ordered, hash browns never soggy and the muffins are big.
The crowds can get big fast, come early.
My family loves this restaurant so much, we have become regulars... Â The prices are low, the service is lightning-fast, the food delicious. Â Breakfast can be a simple (but big) cinnamon roll and coffee, or an eggs benedict, or my husband's favorite - the farmer's breakfast with eggs, pancakes, meat, beans, homefries, and toast. Â We usually have straight forward sandwiches or burgers for lunch. Â For dinner, they offer plenty of home cookin' type meals that you wish your momma had made when you were growing up. Â They have also expanded their menu to include some slightly fancier meals like specialty pastas, prime rib, etc. Â
The staff is quick with a smile, your order, and refills for your drinks. Â
Weekend mornings: be prepared to wait a little while for a table as this restaurant is quite popular. Â However, the service is so quick, even with a line out the door, your wait times are never more than a half an hour.
Our family loves coming here for a hearty country meal that doesn't cost a lot of money. Â We normally come for breakfast - pancakes, waffles, french toast, omlettes, corned beef hash, etc. Â The food is fresh and delicious, and the service is prompt and friendly. Â It's not very fancy - paper napkins, plastic plates and plain flatware, but it's clean and a nice homey atmosphere.
Note: They do NOT take credit or debit cards! Â Cash or checks only. Â They DO have an ATM machine in the foyer though. Â Like I mentioned above, it's not expensive. Â It's in the ballpark of $7 per person for breakfast.
They have a small kids section on the menu. Â They do not offer any sort of coloring sheets or activities for kids, so you might bring a coloring book in with you if your kids need something like that. Â On the bright side, the food comes quick so you won't be waiting long. Â
This morning when we had breakfast there, it was pretty busy, and as a result pretty noisy inside. Â My family had all just rolled out of bed, so we had bed-head and my wife made me wipe the dried druel off the side of my face after we sat down at the table in the restaurant. Â We at least put on clothes before we went though. Â There were other people in the restaurant still wearing their pajamas - no joke! Â
My mother-in-law tells me that they have really good home-cooked meals for dinner, too - things like pot roast or meat loaf, etc. Â I have not been there for dinner, but I suspect it would be good stuff based on my experiences there at breakfast.
Location Note: Â The map that shows up on Yelp is WAY off. Â Village Kitchen is right on Route 25, on the right hand side as you drive northbound away from Center Harbor. Â If you get to the school at Blake Road in Moultonborough, then you went too far. Â It's about 0.9 miles south of Blake Road (where the school is).
