The May 2012 First Friday was my first and definitely not my last. Â Parked about a block away and got to Market St. around 5:45pm. Â Market is closed off to vehicular traffic from Main to Vineyard. Â No charge to enter. Â They were still setting up the entertainment and some food booths, so we headed to the beer garden which was already open. Â Buy your script and head over to the bar. Â They had citrus Shock Top (yay!), Bud Light and Stella. Â Another booth had red & white wines and Bud Light Lime-A-Rita which my friend said was too sweet. Â There were several high tops and tables/chairs.
There are some food booths that are set up on Market, as well as in a small area at the corner of Market & Vineyard. Â
Entertainment:
The entertainers change monthly. Â On this particular night the Air Force Band was playing on the main stage. Â Great music and singing. Â There was a smaller band playing by Cafe O'Lei which served as music for the beer garden.
Food:
Pastele stew - Not being a fan of traditional pasteles, they made it into a stew with carrots, meat, onions & garlic in a tomato-based sauce, which was pretty damn tasty. Â Came with 2 scoops of rice.
Banana crepes - Mixed with Nutella, fresh bananas and topped with whipped cream. Â Very good for a local business! Â
Lilikoi pork pizza - Personal sized pizza, crust was soft & chewy. Â I couldn't really taste the lilikoi, but the pork and cheese works on there. Â This takes a while to order since it has to go through the oven.
Kalua pig - No cabbage, but came with chicken long rice, 1 scoop of rice, potato mac salad and haupia. Â Very tasty. Â Didn't need to add soy sauce to the pork or long rice which is a definite plus.
Baked opakapaka - Good sized filet with a delicious topping of tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, capers and mayo (I think.) Â Comes with two scoops of rice and potato mac salad, which was pretty damn tasty!
9.7.12 update:
Four Sisters Kitchen - Three item plate for $8? Â Hell yeah! Â Kalua pig, mochiko chicken and pork adobo, came with rice and pancit noodles. Â Super tasty. Â Mochiko chicken a little too sweet for me.
10.5.12 update:
Potato on a stick - A continuous peeled potato swirl, deep fried then dusted with 6 different seasonings of your choice. Â The sour cream and onion was very good, as well as the garlic parmesan.
1.4.13 update:
Garlic noodles - Stir fried yellow noodles, full of garlicky and salt flavor and topped with grilled or broiled and sliced chicken thighs. Â Very tasty. Â 2 sizes available.
Kula bliss waffle, by Wow Wow Waffles - Good taste, very buttery and doughy but also very heavy. Â Inside of the waffle was flavored with a chocolate spread (possibly Nutella) and topped with fresh cut strawberries. Â The consistency of the raw batter looked like clumpy mashed potatoes, which might be a plus as the waffle never got soggy.
2.1.13 update:
Caprese burger, by Fatt Chicks - THE BEST BURGER I'VE HAD YET! Â Damn this was super tasty! Â Nice-sized and juicy burger topped with garlic pesto aioli, tomato, mozzarella, basil-caper relish, fried onions and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. The only thing missing were some hot fries!
Overall:
Total fun for everyone. Â Leave your keiki at home if you want to enter the beer garden. Â I'd give it 5 stars if they'd let you bring your beer out onto the closed-to-vehicular-traffic street!
