Watermans is an Edenton NC locals place. My Parents always take us thereI was checking the Yelp reviews and was suprised at some of the negative comments, I DISAGREE. Â Now the food in Edenton should not be compared to large metro areas. Â
As a foodie, I found the food perfect acceptable, above average and the chefs willingness to create exactly what you want.
Being a small town the locals get their drinks ( My Mothers Vodka. Gimlet)
Just the way she likes.
Food seems fresh and creatively prepared. Service was friendly and attentive.
My party had both the crab dip and the crab bites to start our meal. Both were excellent. As flavorful as can be. For dinner, we all had fish. Two of us had stuffed flounder and the other had salmon. No complaints! The flounder could have used a touch more seasoning but overall a quite enjoyable meal.
Review Source:This place was awful. Our bed and breakfast guy recommended we get dinner here. When we arrived it was packed, which we thought was a great sign. Â We waited 20 minutes to be seated- not that bad. We sat down, our waitress was very nice and we were starving. We immediately ordered a shrimp cocktail appetizer. The shrimp had clearly been frozen despite the proximity to the ocean, but it was ok. For dinner we ordered the Waterman's special and a blue cheese burger that was a special for the night. We ordered the burger medium. Our food arrived really fast- not a great sign. The waterman's special was supposed to be a seafood mix of scallops, shrimp, and crab. Â Laying in a bed of "crab meat" that looked and tasted like tuna were scallops that I am certain were no longer fresh, and tiny flavorless shrimps. Â The burger was dry and overcooked and had clearly been cooked the day before or much earlier in the day and then nuked for our dinner. They took the Waterman's special off our tab, which was nice, but we left incredulous. It had been one of the worst dining experiences we'd ever had.
Review Source:The service was quick and very friendly, but the food was average. Seafood gumbo was tasty but a little thin. My wife had the crab cake-stuffed flounder. She Sid it was OK but didn't wow her...bland & she got a mouthful of bones. I had fried oysters. They were somewhere between soggy & crisp...not really either. Also bland. Really? Not even a touch of crab boil or Zataran's in the batter?
So many restaurants we visit have great food & bad or mediocre service. This was just the opposite. Match the food to the service & you'll get 4 stars outta me.
The flounder with crab cake, hush puppy and two sides was yummy. My only complaint were all the bones in the fish. Someone should have taken a little extra time to remove the bones better. The fried macaroni and cheese with the bacon ranch dip was WONDERFUL! So yummy! Moderate prices. $22 for the flounder dish and @$8 for the appetizer! This was enough food to feed me and my guy.
Review Source:I stopped at Waterman's for an appetizer. Ordered the raw oysters. They served them at room temperature which I found odd. They were okay. I ordered a lemon drop martini to kill the bacteria, just in case. It was not a martini like I'm accustomed to. More like thick lemonade. The server tried to correct it and was friendly. The restaurant smelled great and is attractive. I would try it again.
Review Source:My host at the B&B told me that this was not the best option in town - the best option is supposed to be Sean's, but Sean doesn't open on a Mondya or a Tuesday, so this was my only option.
And what a fine option it was  - let me count the ways:
1. $11 for a dozen oysters - at dinner time ! plus they actualy gave me about 16.
2. A fine selection of NC microbrews.
3. Great menu options - I had the blackened fish - really good.
4. Family owned, great crowd, friendly staff and plenty of banter at the bat as we watched the Hurricanes - Bruins game. I told my fellow bar flys  that I too was rooting for the 'Canes as it would give the Caps home ice advantage in the Eastern final. Ouch.
5. Best of all  - they serve beer to go so I took a fine six pack back to my porch and enjoyed one of those splendid Spring nights in the south where the temperature is perfect and the mosquitos have yet to make their presence felt. There might be only a few of those nights in the entire year and I was blessed to have one of them in Edenton.
Waterman's is ok. Â It has seafood, sandwiches, etc. Â It's better than the fast food choices and slighly cheaper than the high end places that dominate the Edenton restaurant scene. Â But, if you are going to be paying Waterman's prices already, you might was well spend a few more bucks and eat at a place that is worth it.
