The atmosphere is everything a sports bar should be: big screen tv's, high-top tables, ample room to stand, drink and move around. Parking is excellent (large lot out front) and the waiters are friendly and quick. In terms of a "man-time" experience, this is a venue where you could post-up with your friends and catch a few hours of your favorite games.
However...
The food is what breaks the deal for me. Tuesday nights is WestCyde's famous "$.39 Wing Night" where one could expect a less-than-stellar meal given that most of the wings are cooked in batches (expecting a usually large turnout) and kept warm under hot lamps for hours at a time. I went on a Friday afternoon and experienced the same overcooked, dry and meatless wings. The sauce selection was fairly diverse and appeared to be ladled extra thick (maybe to mask the wing itself) but in the end, the entirety of the meal under fulfilled my expectations and even bordered on disappointment given my lofty hopes. If you are looking for a place to fill the BW3's void in your life then keep on your quest.
This is a no-frills wing house and sports bar. Â It's one of the few places in Ames that I really enjoy visiting. It's one of my favorites. Â It's not flashy, fashionable or hip. Â This is a comfortable well-worn hoodie sweatshirt kind of a place. Â I love their huge, plum-sized boneless chicken wings and really good selection of sauces. I prefer them to the "Big Worldwide Wing" Chain. Â If you are a guy, and want a great spot to refuel after a softball game this should be near the top of your list if you live in or near Ames. Â I would however not recommend this place for second-dates with a woman. Â It's not phenomenal, but it's straight-forward and good at their purpose, wings and beer at an honest price. Â The Friday special of 10 Boneless wings, fries and a drink for $7 is an absolute gut-buster of a meal.
