Two words "grilled cheese" Â My wife and I ate at the Wharf for our first night in Newport. This sandwich was awesome. I am a big grilled cheese fan and this sandwich is made on fresh bread and a lot of cheese to top it off I added bacon. My wife and I love to run so we will be running a lot tomorrow. I agree with another review on here about the rusticness(sp) of this place. The draft list was huge and very local. The music was fun and modern.
Review Source:For my first night in Newport Rhode Island, the Wharf Pub and Restaurant provided me with exactly what I needed; a relaxed setting, good music, friendly staff and some great fish and chips. The food here was very good but not overthought with large (for me) portions and attractive plating's that really make you want to dig right in. The beer list was massive, loaded with local beers from RI, MA and VT, and left me feeling a bit lost. However our waitress was more than ready to make a suggestion that proved enjoyable throughout the evening.
I started with a simple salad, while picking at a well laid out cheese and charcuterie platter, but what really stood out was a plate of tater tots (yes-tater tots) with anchovy butter. The Wharf pub has a list of different tater tot combinations that you can choose from and they all looked very appealing. As for the entrée, the fish and chips really caught my eye. Fresh cod battered and fried, over a mountain of potatoes (that would have taken me two meals to finish) and the house made tartar sauce. It was excellent and exactly what I needed on my first night in this seaside town. Along with a glass of Sam Adams "Grumpy Monk", a Belgium inspired IPA, I was all set for a night on the wharf.
Another dish of considerable note was the pork shoulder mac and cheese. You can't eat like this often, but when on vacation (or for once in a blue moon), you must treat yourself to a dish like this. As if the pork shoulder and mac and cheese weren't enough, a pile of batter-fried onions resided on top, to truly cap off your hedonistic wet dreams. It was plated beautifully in a cast iron pan, giving it the perfect rustic appeal. As a lover of an occasional Cassoulet, this dish rang all the right bells.
I enjoyed myself, quite a bit at The Wharf Pub and Restaurant. Â It was just what I needed for my first night in Newport.
I hadn't gone to the Wharf Pub since it reopened with new owners, but I hear that the difference is night and day.
The Wharf Pub has become my standby for when I feel like going out for dinner. Â I love the atmosphere. Â It's rustic - lots of reclaimed wood and features, drinks in Mason jars, etc. Â The food is really good quality. Â I love that they serve different types of tater tots as appetizers. Â It brings comfort food from when you were a child into your adult years. Â My favorite is the tater tots with the anchovy butter. Â Yum! Â My husband's favorite thing to get is the Bondi burger. Â You can't beat a burger with beetroot and an egg. Â I like trying new things. Â My favorite so far was the Chicken & Waffles. Â As a New Englander going to a restaurant in New England, I'm so glad they use REAL maple syrup in this dish. Â It really finishes it off nicely. Â The chicken sausage is fantastic too and a nice touch. Â The drinks are creative and delish!
Got recommended this bar for a quick snack by a local. Good bar food, friendly bartenders, good drinks. We got the anchovy tater tots and the lobster chowder.
The great thing is that it seems to be a lot of locals and wasn't too crowded (maybe because it was on a bit of a side street and kind of dark?). Anyways, it was great for a quick bite and drink.
This place is great! They have a section on their menu just for tater tots! Their menu has a great selection of offerings including a lot for vegetarians which is nice to see with a pub-style menu. The specials are always interesting and have great parings of ingredients. Their beer list is very extensive on tap and by bottle and they seem to take pride in finding some really great beers to have in the restaurant. The atmosphere is fun and the waitstaff is friendly and helpful.
Review Source:Gross!!!! Â The menu is almost exclusively potatoes....tater tots served a variety of fattening ways from wrapped in bacon to dipped in gravy to covered in cheese. Â There is a burger and it was sub par at best, the chicken wings tasted old and over done. Â The urine smell from the bathroom permeated the dining area which commingled with the scent of paint slapped over the old ceiling and walls. Â It felt like they never bothered to clean the place before throwing up their new "old" decor. Â We ordered beverages before we got the menu. Â Had we seen the totally fat carb only menu before hand we would have bolted. NEVER AGAIN!!
Review Source:The only reason this place gets one star is for our waitress Ali, so sweet and accommodating being as we ( my 15 year old daughter and me ) were traveling last minute and things have worked brilliantly til we arrived in Newport with inclement downpours and no hotel. Ali's friendv got us a room at a  b&b more on that under other review. The food here is below par pub food tolerable at best. I ordered nachos sans sour cream And my teenager ordered chicken grilled s-w, we both had upset stomachs  for hours!!
Review Source:Being that its a seafood restaurant I tried to order raw oysters as listed on their menus, so i asked the waitress what kind of oysters they were and she said she does not know and shrugs her shoulders to me! Instead when she should have gone to the kitchen and ask someone else working there what oysters they sell! I did NOT order the oysters, instead i got just a plain fish and chip and a beer but let me tell i couldn't eat fast enough to get out of this place! Did i mention there were flies that kept buzzing around our food and table, a sign of uncleanliness of the place! The whole area is touristy but I'm sure there are plenty of better choices, i just happened to stumble unluckily on this one! Tip for the owner, you need better training for your wait staff!
Review Source:I just ate there five minutes ago and I'm sickened. The service was horrible, the food was disgusting. I ordered a roast beef sandwich with no mayo. It got messed up 3 times! The lady was rude and didn't care. I am appalled by what just happened. I can't even justify giving one star. I hope this place gets shut down. Do yourself a favor, DON'T GO THERE!
Review Source:The burgers here are outstanding. Â I usually get the burger with crumbled blue cheese because it is the best I have had anywhere. Â My wife loves the fish n chips. Â We take the kids here and they love it also. Â Service had always been very good also. If you want very good pub food with a great atmosphere this is your place.
Review Source:I went to the Wharf this weekend and had the worst dining experience I have ever experienced. Â We were there on Saturday July 7th. Â The waitstaffed seemed displeased to have to wait on us. Â We had to actually get up and find our waitress to put in our drink order. Â They food was horrible. Â We had Loster Rolls with stale bread and no taste to the lobster. Â We didn't get utensils or napkins by the time dinner came. Â We had to once again locate our waitress who tossed our napkins and utensils on the table on her way by to go chat it up with the other waitresses in the back of the restaurant.
The most humiliating experience was when they kicked out a family with a handicapped child and service dog. Â The dog was clearly marked as a service dog (even had the word "service dog" on the harness TWICE) and the waitresses kicked them out of the dining room. Â Pretty sure that is illegal and against ADA. Â The family was humiliated. Â There seemed to be no manager anywhere. Â The place looked like it was being run by a bunch of know nothing, bad attitude college kids who were ticked to have to put up with us.
No napkins while we ate and the bathrooms were so dirty there was toilet paper with #2 on it laying on the floor! Gross! Supposedly there chowder won an award..... It tasted like watered down Campbell's....maybe the award winning chef is gone? Very bad service too. Save your money and your time.
Review Source:I've had their burger and chili before and the chili was great... But the burger came with potato chips... Really?
I gave it a chance last night and tried the lobster roll (I saw someone eating eat my first time here)... A lot of bread and little lobster. The twin lobster rolls at the rotunda for $11.95 and fries are better than this $15 roll... And it did come wig fries but totally soggy... No crisp at all...
My friends medium burger was well done, too.
I hate that my first review is a negative one.
Service was good.
We were directed to Benjamins for good seafood but the non-seafood menu was limited for my daugher, so we went to The Wharf.
The service was friendly but was taken aback at the staff who sat in the back of the restaurant talking about thei weekend plans in front of the guests. Â The staff was louder than the guests, discussing the previous nights drink follies and bottles of wine they had spilled everywhere. Â A bit unprofessional to say the least. Â On to the food... The food was just average. I ordered bay scallops. The serving was heaping. I dont know that they were fresh local but the were edible. The cole slaw was fresh and crunchy. Â The hamburger was only edible. Â No frilles burger, no lettuce, no tomato. Apparently you have to ask for it. Â Â I had a draft Newport Storm Amber Ale which was good and cold. The highlight of my visit. I would recommend going elsewhere.
Right in the heart of the Wharf. I really enjoy going to this place because it simply has great pub fare.
The clam chowder doesn't have the usual extreme creamy consistency like all the others so I find it to be more appetizing than most.
BEWARE! You have to ask for fries or else they give you potato trips. Tricky tricky.
The nachos are probably my favorite in town because they actually layer the cheese and don't just put it on top and call it a day.
I did make the mistake of getting the Veggie pocket once which if you're going to a pub then why are you getting a veggie pocket? It wasn't good, shredded lettuce in a veggie pocket is a no-no.
I've tried the:
Steak and cheese sandwich- a 7 on a scale of 1-10 (bread got a little too soggy but the steak itself was yummy)
Black Forest Ham sandwich- a 6 on a scale of 1-10 (bread was a little too hard, I should try a different roll)
One of the few I know that carries Sam Adam's Cherry Wheat Ale (girly beer, but hey, it's what I like!)
Free Soup!
Food was decent and service was good.  Meal came with free complimentary clam chowder soup. I had the chicken Parmigiana and Fettucine  while my husband had the fish and chips. We came in for dinner on a cold mid January vacation to the East Coast... came across this restaurant while walking along the shops at Bowens Wharf. Aside from me and my husband there was another table being served so we had great service, water glass was always full and our server was nice and friendly. Price was not too bad either and you can't beat the free bowls of clam chowder with our entrees :)
The calamari was surprisingly good. But it was all down hill after that. I should have gotten a burger. Â I am sure they couldn't mess that up. I bought a steak for some strange reason I went with that. I had to pay all night for that mistake. Â The waitress was nice though. Â I would never go here again though.
Review Source:"The Last Wharf"
by Josh K.
From experience, I can vouch that it's difficult to get a table in the downtown Newport restaurants during summer evenings. Â It's near impossible to get a table during Labor Day weekend.
We arrived in Newport on Friday evening of the aforementioned holiday. Â After checking in to our small guesthouse, we decided to stroll along the touristy and restaurant-crammed Thames Street and the scenic Wharfs that extend out into the yacht filled harbor. Â We heard about, read, and saw many appealing restaurants. Â All were full; all except the Wharf Pup and Restaurant.
The menu posted outside didn't seem much different to the competing restaurants in the vicinity: seafood, burgers, steak, chow-da. There was ample outside seating to watch the action on the wharf, and the prices were slightly lower. Plus they were advertised as the best pub in town to get local beer on tap.
"Why not?" we thought...
Well, for one thing the portions are small. Â My forgettable cup of so-called "Award Winning" Clam Chowder (5.99) was small and lightly garnished with dill (I think they were copying the more successful Black Pearl's recipe next door). Â It was almost missing its main ingredient- the clam. Who voted this Newport's best chowder?
The lobster bisque (6.99) was also just as small, bland, and lacking in its main protein. Â The lobster that was present was shredded almost to the point of irrelevancy.
We also ordered Scallop and Clam Rolls (9.99) with a side of "pub" fries. Â Served on a plain hot dog bun, the scallops (my personal favorite shellfish) had no flavor and thus certainly not fresh. Â With the sea being ten meters away, this is unforgiveable. Â
The Clam Roll was better. Â It had more flavor than the scallops, but at 10 bucks, we (foolishly?) expected whole belly clams but got the strips instead.
I washed my meal down with some nice Newport Ales and even a cask beer. Â Going well with the salty fries, the beer was by far the best aspect of the establishment. Â However the advertising was misleading as there were only a few local beers on tap. I would imagine Coddington Brewing Company is where I should have gone in hindsight. Â But what they had was good.
The location is great, the food is not. Â The pub in the front seemed more fun and raucous and I could see myself going back to drink some Hops, but I'll pass on the seafood next time.
One of the only places still serving dinner without a mile long wait list by the water on a Saturday night, the Wharf has a nice patio and extensive indoor seating. Wine and beer only, but we were just interested in sodas-- which came in super huge plastic cups.
I was fiending for lobster, but a whole crustacean was not on offer. Lobster rolls and lobster ravioli were, however, and that's what we got.
I left full and without making a huge dent in my wallet, so it was a win for decent food and average service.
We wandered into this just after arriving to Newport, when we had no idea where to go. Every other place in the neighborhood was packed (45 minute to one-hour waits), so we wandered into Wharf because we were out of options. Â We were a little concerned because the place was almost empty -- a bad sign on a crowded strip...
However, we had great service, cold beer, and decent food. It's definitely a step below the other/nicer restaurants in the immediate  area  in decor and food, but it's a lot cheaper.  I wouldn't hesitate to stop in again if I was looking for basic bar food.
As a rule for myself when a boast is proclaimed "pub " I try my damnedest to seat myself at the bar for a brew and a meal or any variation that includes the brew. HEE HEE
very cold brew, pleasant tender and pretty good burger type meals for 4 people in our party. We were satisfied and to be honest a little buzzed from the cold beers. Ha! Â I recommend
We came here because we weren't sure where to eat in Newport. The prices were reasonable, and we decided to sit outside even though it was really hot out. Service was decent, no complaints there. The food was mediocre. The clam chowder wasn't exactly the best I had, there are many other places I would go. I got fried clam strips which were alright, my friend got fish and chips which were excellent, and my other friend got the lobster roll. Lobster roll tasted like a lobster roll, nothing out of the ordinary. All in all, a decent place, but nothing that nowhere else can also offer.
Review Source:We went in on a Sunday afternoon to grab a beer and some lunch.
Biggest draw was Pear Woodchuck on tap!!! Yay!!
We sat at the bar and the bartender was...interesting.... He was a pretty funny guy but if you are easily offended (by anything!) you should probably skip the bar and snag a table.
The place seems to have a  lot of regulars which tends to be a good sign.
During restaurant week ( happens twice a year, going on now but I think it ends 03 APR) Â they've got an awesome lunch menu-- soup/salad, entree and dessert AND BEER!!! for $16. If you're lucky, they might even let you sub in an extra beer instead of dessert!
I got the Reuben, which came with a free cup of their award-winning clam chowder. I was wary of the chowder because it looked a little too thin for my liking. Â It ended up being delicious! Just the right amount of seasonings and clam chunks... if it had been any thinner, I wouldn't have been a fan.
The Reuben was pretty good, not the best I've had but definitely not the worst.
The Sangria is worth a try- it's missing the fancy floating fruit pieces but it's pretty good and very potent!
If you find yourself shopping in the area, it's worth a stop.
Typically bar fare. Â Service was pretty slow... not sure if it was the inability of the kitchen to handle the restaurant week crowd. Â I tried my wife's NE Clam Chowder and it was good, but I am not sure about award-winning. Nothing special about this place... just happened to be conveniently located to where we were...
Review Source:I am not sure how this place is surviving...the rent on their building is probably high as it's located in a touristy area and there's no way their going to cut it much longer with the (lack of) food and service they offer.
I came here so that my boyfriend and I could take his parents out to dinner during the first weekend I met them. Complete disaster from start to finish.
It took about 10 minutes before anyone came over to our table. I should have run right when I realized the waiter didn't know anything about the wine menu. That's always a red flag. Since he was no help, we used my boyfriend's iPhone to look up the wines on the list and find one that I liked.
Our calamari came with two dirty sets of silverware for four people and no cocktail sauce, as advertised on the menu. When I asked the waiter if it was on its way he told me "uhhh, the kitchen is making more."
I ordered a dinner salad when we got our second round of drinks. The waiter didn't write anything down so he inevitably had to come back and confirm the drink order and forgot my salad altogether.
My boyfriend's father ordered clam chowder which never came. When I asked the waiter about this he (I kid you not) said, "uhhh it went bad, like it smelled really gross so I'll just take it off your bill."
I can't even describe how much of a tool this guy was.
We ate our food, which was sub-par. The funny thing was the waiter also tried to tell us that the salmon was caught in Newport. There are no salmon caught in Newport. At all.
Partway through the meal, we noticed that the hostess and waiters were turning guests away, telling them that their kitchen was too backed up. The restaurant was half full!!
Our dirty plates were never taken off the table and we had to sit with them while we paid our bill. There were literally flies starting to arrive by the time we left. Of course, the clam chowder was still on the bill. And of course there wasn't a manager to speak with throughout the entire experience. I wouldn't be surprised if he had just quit that night.
I always forget about this place until I walk by it - and then I want to go in and have a beer. It's something about the location, the way it's tucked in with the overpriced touristy shops. You can sit at the bar and watch people walk by and say, I am happy I'm sitting in here and not walking around in the cold.
Reading the other reviews, I didn't realize there was a deck in the back, I never get the past the bar as you walk in.
Good spot that's been around a long time for a reason.
Basic bar and basic food. BUT....it's almost never too busy to get a table right away and it's pretty cheap for Newport. Im a native Newporter transplanted out of the area so when Im back in town for shopping and what not I usually hit this place up.
The nachos are awesome and a great bargain for the price.
Located on Bowen's Wharf, Wharf Pub & Restaurant is a nice spot for a quick lunch. Nothing special, I'm pretty sure the BBQ sauce on my chicken sandwich was out of a bottle and it was served with chips instead of fries, but it's still good food. They have a few TV's around the place, tables outside, and good beers on tap. I guess this is how Newport does a sports bar.
Review Source:This spot sits in Bowens Wharf in Newport and is a prime location in the summer located right on the marina/harbor. The menu is more lunches than dinner, with pretty good sandwiches and appetiizers. It is an average pub/grill but has fast service and is a good place to grab a quick bite and a drink on a summer day. the deck out back is a nice place to people watch in the summer!
Review Source:I dig this place. Â After a long day of cliff walking in the rain, we needed some good New England chow. Â The Wharf Pub is pretty simple, tons to choose from on the menu (even for a picky eater like myself) and pretty reasonably priced. Â On a nice day, they have a patio, but today was strictly an indoors day. Â Service was fast and friendly. Â The only thumbs down was the clam chowder...thin, too little meat, and on the cold side. Â Not cool at all! Â
And a parking tip...it's impossible to park around here (at least, for a reasonable price anyway). Â Park at the visitor's center, then buy a RIPTA day pass ($5). Â Show your RIPTA pass along with your visitor's center validated parking ticket and parking is only $2...woohoo!
