I would have giving negative stars! Horrible customer service, dirty tables, took about 30 minutes to get our food and it wasn't even crowded. The bartender is horrible at mixing drinks and was a complete jerk when I asked him what he preferred. I don't recommend going there. The one in Chicago is probably more professional and better.
Review Source:WhirlyBall is a ton of fun -- that's all you really need to know.
According to their website, "it combines lacrosse, hockey and basketball with bumper cars" if that helps give you an idea of what to expect. Â I was here as part of a group/corporate outing, and I was sad when our time was up.
The cars don't go terribly fast, but if you hit someone head to head, you will get a good jolt. Â On that note, one of my biggest complaints is that some of the seat belts could not even be adjusted, and some of them could not be adjusted tight enough. Â I'm about average height and weight, so I was surprised that I could not tighten down most of the belts enough (and some weren't even adjustable -- way too loose). Â I'm surprised this hasn't caused more safety issues, especially with smaller/petite ladies and younger people.
The beer selection is actually really good here, and they have a decent selection of liquor. Â There is a climbing wall, video game/arcade area, LazerTag, and several TV's tuned to sports games/sports talk shows. Â I believe there is a jukebox if you need to hear your favorite song before going to battle it out in a game of WhirlyBall.
In addition to the seat belt issue, some of the cars were in need of repair. Â Some of the car bodies had holes/damage, and the vinyl handle you use to control your car kept coming off on one of the cars I was in. Â Imagine a loose ball and you're able to break away from the group but as you approach, your handle slips off and you lose control of your car. Â Another thing they might want to look into is I noticed in several cars they had rather long ends of bolts exposed. Â Sort of like they had to repair/replace something but didn't have the right sized bolt, so they used one way too long and never cut it off. Â It might be a good idea to cut those down to size so people don't snag their clothes/shoes or cut or scrape themselves.
Overall, I had a great time and I hope to go back again.
Came here for a work thing which isn't exactly the highlight but this place was a lot of fun. I had never heard of WhirlyBall before but it's basically bumper cars with a touch of lacrosse.
It's like free rein to hit your boss or other undesirables without any consequence all in the name of fun. It was a lot of fun I unashamedly admit.
This seems like a great group outing place. It's easy to play and hard to master. We had 20 so when some were playing we hit the pool table and the other games to keep us amused.
Definitely worth it, although we didn't pay! lol
This place is great. Lots of fun things to do, great food, and an amazing and eclectic beer and drink menu. This place is a hidden gem.
Have had discussions with the Bar/Food Manager, the General Manager and the Staff Bartender. They are all very nice and are more than willing to hear comments and suggestions. They have drink specials every night, which makes it actually cheap to come and enjoy a game on one of their many TVs and have a good time with some company.
Their food is of better quality and better portions than any of the local sports bar chains, ie: Buffalo Wild Wings.
They have 10-14 beers on tap at all times, with some very hard to find or rare beers always available on draft along with at least 40 other varieties in bottle on hand.
Wednesday nights, they have $1 Miller Light Bottles, which is unheard of in the suburbs. It's great and makes for a nice break in the week.
Overall, I will continue to go here at least once a week, until they kick me out!
OMG! Â We had a blast here! Â I was surprised that children were allowed in here at night (we got there around 11 or midnight) and there were still kids running around. Â I guess with all the drunkenness and the bar in the main room I was a bit taken back by this.
We arrived with a couple drinks in our systems already (we nominated a designated driver for the real car!) and we were ready for some fun. Â There was a group of 8 of us and we wanted to play for a half an hour... I thought I would get bored after this amount on time, since I have never played before. Â They told us it would be about a half an hour wait and we decided to hit the bar, play some foosball, and pick out some songs on the juke box. Â It was probably about 15 minutes later when we were called to play.
The game was soooo much fun. Â They split our time into two 15 minute games with a short intermission to take another quick shot. Â The last game I mostly drove in circles :). Â I also got hit in the lip during the second game and have a pretty cool battle scar (well its a scab right now but it has only been one week!).
Everyone here was awesome and I cannot wait to go back!
WhirlyBall is always tons of slightly dangerous fun. My office often rents the place for 'team-building activities' and such and it always fits the bill.
What I'm really here to discuss is the AMAZING beer selection this place has developed recently. A fellow beer nerd brought me here a couple months ago for an after-work beer and I was thinking, 'OK, Miller Lite or perhaps a nice A-B product?' While the domestic macrobrews are definitely available, I was floored by the top-notch selection of craft beers available both on tap and in bottles. I'm talking the likes of Firestone Walker, Bell's, Founder's, Lagunitas, Great Lakes, etc. It would take me months to try every good beer they offer and the taps are changing all the time.
I'd never think to myself that a far-flung suburban mall area would be home to an underground beer paradise, but it's true. Check it out if you find yourself in Lake County and you won't be sorry you stopped. Pair this with a stop at Firkin in Libertyville, Tighthead Brewing in Mundelein or Lake Bluff Brewing in Lake Bluff and you'll be one very happy camper.
Awesome-sauce!
Whirlyball - between steering and trying to get the ball you're in for some craziness. Even if you get the ball you might miss the net which is hilarious when it happens to someone else. I have a HUGE bruise on my leg from playing, so beware!
Lasertron - even more fun than Whirlyball and no bruising! :)
This was my first-ever experience with Whirlyball, and while it was certainly fun, there were a handful of things that could have been better.
The ref who was keeping score is located next to the black team's goal, and while he never missed when black scored, there were several occasions when he failed to credit red team for a score. Â At least once or twice I witnessed him talking to a co-worker and not even following the game, and it wasn't a quick thing.
Of course it would cost more, but perhaps they should make the goals pressure-sensitive so that they auto-score instead of relying on the ref.
The cars seemed very unequal in terms of speed and mobility. Â Some cars would jet around the court and others seemed like like were stuck in first gear and prone to not moving again any time you get temporarily stuck against the wall or another car. Â
The court also seemed extremely dirty - I realize that bumper cars aren't going to be spotlessly clean, but my clothing looked like I had been working on cars in a junkyard when I left. Â Don't wear anything you don't want all grimy.
Other than that, it was a fun experience, although there was nothing about the facility that seemed to do much more than meet the minimum expectations. Â YMMV.
I havent actually played whirlyball but I played lasertag here, Awesome! Who doesnt like to get some drinks then run around and play laser tag, its two story too so your running up and down. I had fun. Plus the bartender made some signature drink of hers that was sooo good but now I cant remember what it was called :( We went on a friday night at about 11pm and it wasnt crowded at all.
Review Source:Went here on sat for my girlfriends 30th birthday
I enjoyed the whirlyball itself having never been before. Â
the atmosphere left much to be desired - felt like i was in the twilight zone ... carts didnt all work 3 out of 10 were bad and the "ref" kept yelling at us like it was our fault...
I went for a friends birthday party last saturday. The carts never seemed to work correctly. My cart had to be changed out 3 times in the first 15 minutes of the game. Finally when they found a semi working one, it would die and the only way to continue moving was for someone to run into me. This was the case with several of the carts. I have played several times at the Chicago location, and would never go back to Vernon Hills. It seemed like that is where they moved all of the crappy broken stuff to from the other locations. Avoid at all costs.
Review Source:We had about 20 people playing for 2 hours on Saturday for a 30th birthday party, and it was great. Â We alternated who was playing and who was watching/drinking. Â We had the viewing room to ourselves, so we could be as loud as we wanted.
This Whirlyball place has laser tag and an indoor climbing wall. Â We saw a ton of kids birthday parties, and for people with the money that would be a great kids party.
After we finished playing everyone was complaining about bruises and whiplash. Â It was fun, but now I need some time to recover from Whirlyball.
The service was all over the place. Â In the begining it took me a long time to get someone's attention to find out where our court was. Â My first drink at the bar was quick, but when a big group all approached the bar at the same time, it put a strain on the lone bartender.
Whirlyball is always a bit expensive. Â Drinks here were a decent price. Â My rum and coke was $4, which isn't terrible. Â It looks as though you can bring in your own cake, but we went back to our friend's place for dinner and cake.
This Whirlyball place has a decent size parking lot, but is a little hard to find.
When it comes to Whirlyball you either love it or you hate, I love it. Who doesn't like bumper cars? Who doesn't like crazy made up hybrid games (basketball and lacrosse)? The natural next step is combining them and to all those who hate this activity you are just upset because you spent the whole time trying to learn to steer.
Review Source:I went to whirlyball last week with coworkers for a team outing. It was an excellent idea, since it's somewhat physical and extremely competitive, but normal athleticism counts for nothing in a bumper car. By the next day, a bunch of whiners were complaining about bruises around their waists from the seatbelts, but whatever.
The one thing I didn't like was the slashing rule. In my opinion, you should be able to slash the ball carrier's scoop with your scoop as hard as you want, as long as you only hit the scoop. The rules weren't exactly clear on this. I never got called for a penalty for slashing, but other people did. I'd talk to the ref before hand to be lax on this.
Two hours would be the perfect amount of time to rent a court if you were playing about half of the time. A few drinks might not hurt either.
Driving around and crashing into people can be fun.....in a bumper car. This game is like a combo of lacrosse and basketball. Fun stuff! Â It definitely got my adrenaline going (I tend to get competitive with this sort of stuff.) This place also offers laser tag, a bar, bags, pool and food. I played some bags when i went and went down over to whirlyball. There are only 10 bumper cars available though so if you come with a group of more than 10, then you'll have to switch off after games.
Bad part about this is that you have to be very careful because this game can be violent. In order to control the bumper car direction, you have a handle that you turn rather than a wheel. I crashed full speed into the wall and the handle was in a bad spot and hit my knee really hard (and I already have bad knees to begin with!), so that was really painful. It happened 3 times to the same knee too :( .But I still continued to play despite the pain.
All in all, it's good fun! my whole group loved it.
Our bachelor party showed up and even guys in their late-20s and early 30s left complaining about bruises and bumps from the game. Â Suck it up! Â Whirlyball is the sh*t. Â If you haven't played it, you need to.
Make sure you play after a few drinks. Â It makes things interesting. Â The only complaint about the game itself? Â They need to have some rules or figure something out to make "fore-checking" easier. Â When the ball get smashed between the car and the wall, it's a pain in the ass for anyone to get it out of there.
I'd love to give them Five-Stars, but you get screwed out of money if you don't use every single minute of your allotted time-slot. Â We had a bachelor party there and people trickled in and they seemed lax on getting us ready to go and we started late. Â Unfortunately we only received 4, 20 minute games in (80 minutes) in our 120 minute time-slot and we had to pay for the whole thing, not games played. Â Needless to say, some people were pretty pissed off about that. Â A manager did offer to toss us a few games of laser tag, but we declined. Â We'd rather throw balls at each other and smash things. Â It's all good. Â We'll be going again.
