We had an exceptional meal here. That's mainly due to the new chef, and partly due to the friendliness and knowledge and welcoming nature of the bartender (we ate in the comfortable bar). A good if not great selection of beers was helpful after a long day of hiking and shopping. The shrimp/scallop scampi in a buttery, garlicky wine reduction was excellent. The delicious fresh, sweet sea scallops and shrimp had a velvet robing and the sauce was not salty but plenty garlicky. There was a delicious veal pot roast, rich and melt in your mouth. The next table had great looking burgers with hand cut fries. Fine walnut salad to finish (we prefer salad at the end of the meal, a good palate freshener). The bartender treated us to a tasting of his house-made lemon or lime 'cellos. WAY better than the bottled kind (he infuses vodka with dozens of peels for about a week). Overall this place was a pleasant surprise, and a welcome foody-gem in a valley full of pretty mediocre eats.
Review Source:I had lunch there with my girlfriend and the chowder was something special. Â Its often tough to separate one chowder form another but maybe it was the tarragon but it was one of the best cups I had. Â
The chicken sandwich I had was great, lot of chowder, and I had a great fresh salad. overall I'm going back and I would recommend this place. Service was great as well server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food.
Upon arriving, we had to wait for a host. Â A few minutes past and he finally arrived. Â There was another couple who walked in after us and the host asked if we had a reservation. Â We both said that we didn't. Â His response: "Of course not!" Â He then proceeded to say that the two of us looked like we would be comfortable in the bar area. Â Grant it we were dressed in shorts and t-shirts but it is summer. Â The wife and I were there to celebrate our anniversary and we don't drink so we were really looking for a nice table to sit at. Â He squished us between two other couples in the bar area. Â The other couples were nice enough to move their bar table for us to get into our seats. Â The only waitress (also the bartender) came and got our drinks and took 15 minutes to come back and take our order. Â I ordered the grilled vegetable ravioli. Â Here is the description from their menu "fresh pasta stuffed with grilled vegetables and ricotta cheese, served with our own greek mariana sauce which includes kalamata olives, mushrooms, artichoke hearts and feta cheese." Â I received my dish and started eating the pasta which wasn't ravioli but tortellini. Â It was cheese tortellini that you can purchase in the frozen foods section of your local WalMart. Â There were no roasted vegetables stuffed in the tortellini at all. Â I asked the server to look at the menu to be sure I had read the description correctly and she stated that tonight they were serving it with tortellini. Â Perhaps that should have been stated when I ordered it. Â Needless to say, a healthy meal turned into a fattening meal and I did not eat it. Â The waitress asked if I wanted something else but it was getting late and I didn't want anything else. Â As a plus, she did not charge us for my meal.
Review Source:Perhaps the worst management I have ever experienced at a restaurant. Upon arrival the parking lot was a sheet of ice. The four of us had to hold on to each other to make it from the parking lot to the front door. We politely told the hostess and she was rather rude. Perhaps they have enough insurance so they don't care if you crack your skull. The waitress was sweet and helpful. Now comes the fun part. At the end of the dinner we presented two http://Restaurant.com certificates. We understood the rules and called earlier in the week to confirm that we could use them. The hostess came to our table to proceed to tell us that we couldn't . We explained that we called. It was $25 a against an almost $200 tab so it was the principle not the money. The Hostess, whose name is Jordan, preceded to tell us how it would come out the young girls paycheck who answered the phone. Told us they don't use http://Restaurant.com anymore. Despite the fact that as of that day it was still on their website and we purchased it two days before using.
The food was mediocre. Three of us had lamb and it was just ok, the side dishes were cold. The place was rather empty for Sat night at 7:30, so the atmosphere was non-existent.
The hostess is just awful and clearly has little to know experience in a service business. The best part is that a friend called to complain to the owner.
No one has called back.
My advice is to take your money elsewhere.
If I could I would give this place ONE star. Horrible service and even worse food.
Arrived for dinner around 7:30. Bar was packed and dinning area was empty. We were seated in a small room at a table right next to the only other couple in the restaurant. I used to work as a hostess and I understand seating people in areas that are most convenient for the waiters... but when there are just two couples in a quite restaurant you can at least separate them by a table or two... or you might as well put them at the same table since you can easily hear each others conversations.
When I asked to move, the hostess rolled her eyes and told us where ever we want. When we sat down, all we could hear is the waitress complaining, "oh, so they chose that room- now I have to walk back and fourth." "ugh" .. wah wah wah.
Before I go on.. let me just remind you there was only one other table occupied at the restaurant... so in total two tables to attend to. It took the waitress 15 minutes by the time she got to us to take our order. Appetizer: Clam Chowder, Wings, Bruschetta. Main Dish: Greek Salad with Chicken and Steak. 10 Minutes pass by and she brings out the soup and she tells us the bread will be coming out shortly (If I am correct...Usually you get the bread right after the waitress takes your order? hmm). Soup was not hot.. just slightly warm. 20 minutes pass and she comes out with the bruschetta and wings.. still NO bread. I look down at the bruschetta and go.. excuse me we ordered the bruschetta this looks like pizza. The waitress replies.."this is our version of bruschetta." Has anyone every heard of baked bruschetts? It was dough with melted cheese and sun-dried tomatoes. Sorry, but I believe that is considered a pizza. We moved on to the wings. They were cold. 15 minutes pass and she finally comes back to give us the bread. White sad bread... the kind of bread you use to make a peanut butter and jelly- the bread you get with an order of eggs and this bread wasn't even toasted! We complained that the wings were cold and she took them back. Surprisingly she returned them to us 5 minutes later. I felt the lettuce on the plate which was warm and immediately called her back. I asked if she had microwaved the wings.. and she said yes. Now I was pissed. We canceled our main dishes (which btw... had JUST been entered in to the computer).. and left. We waisted an hour and a half to have two bites of cold food that were way over priced.
Over the last few years, they have changed their menu several times. Â We like it the way it is now. Â Some of the experimenting has been a challenge and may be the reason for some of the iffy reviews. Â The atmosphere is great and the food is good when the menu is good. Â This week when we visited the entertainment was the White Mountain Boys. Excellent band. Â When you close your eyes your not sure if it's Johnny Cash or Elvis Presley as the lead singer. Â Great place to sit, have a drink and an appetizer or dinner. Â Best of all, most days you can bring your dog to dinner. Â How cool is that!
Review Source:Poorly managed! At least it was this past Saturday. Upon arrival, our group of 9, was directed to the lounge by the rather rude hostess, we found seating and then waited at least 10 minutes for a waitress, who neglected to tell us that the kitchen was overwhelmed and not accepting new orders for at least 25 minutes ( we overheard someone else mention it) at which point we finished our drinks and left.
Review Source:Gordon Ramsay needs to save this place! Visually, The Wildcat Inn & Tavern is all that you could ask for in a charming New England location. 18th century look and feel, quaint town, and wonderful mountains out the door. However, that's the best part...Although the tavern looks like a great find, and the bar area has the patrons to prove it, the restaurant is a bit of a disaster. We sat for an early evening reservation had drinks and an appetizer delivered promptly and all looked great. Fast-forward an hour and nothing else had arrived...and from the look of it, most of the other tables were in the same place! Then the food came. 2 wrong orders and one burger that was so well cooked that there was a 1/4 inch of char on one side...After apologies the server promised a free desert, which was delivered as the wrong item...And when mentioned the response was, well it tastes good doesn't it! Don't think we'll be going back, at least for food. Ever.
Review Source:We were looking for good eats, good local beer and some entertainment on a Friday night away from home. We saw the ad outside the Wildcat advertising fish fry Friday and live entertainment for tonight. Well.... We only got 50%- the fish ( which was VERY good). It turned out , when we asked about who the entertainment was, that there was none. Huh??? The maitre' de sort of laughed it off as if this was not the 1 St time a customer questioned why no entertainment when the sign outside clearly advertised otherwise. Though fish , beer , meatloaf and potato pancakes were really good( our server was very attentive too)... The main course was served within a minute of the appetizers being served-no lie. We asked them to take the food back and keep warm until we were done with appetizers- you'd think me & hubby each had 3 heads the way the maitre 'de looked at is . Even insinuated that my fish may be soggy after they put in the warmer till we were ready ( warmer? Give it to someone else who is ready for dinner now! Just give me fresh crispy fish! I'm paying for it!
We think on future trips to Conway NH area there are other places to spend a dinner& Friday nite out (through no fault of the chef or our server).
Not too shabby! J and I came here the other night for his friend's rehearsal dinner, and though it was more of a party than your standard rehearsal dinner, a great time was definitely had by all!
The food was set out in a buffet style, and you couldn't go wrong with the chicken tenders and the flatbread pizza!
One of J's friends got me a drink that I believe was called a "gumball" , or something to that effect. Totally sweet and totally strong - as in way too strong for someone like me who rarely drinks. Though I can't comment on the prices of the drinks since it was open bar, he did get charged for that drink - $9 for a martini glass full.
Definitely a place I'd consider returning to!
Was pleasantly surprised by this find. Â There is a more formal dining area and the tavern area that is much more casual although the menu for both is the same. Â
The food was ten times better than expected for a pub. Â We ordered the crab, corn and artichoke dip as an appetizer and it was all we could do to not lick the bowl clean. Â Our children split a pizza that was fantastic, my husband had the meatloaf.... the biggest piece of meatloaf I have ever seen on a plate.... and I had the chicken marsala. Â Both came with mashed potato and garlic snow peas. Â Food was amazingly good, service was top notch and the atmosphere was a perfect ending to a busy day.
Leaving this on the list and will go back again, definitely, in the future.
As a side note: they allow dogs and give them a bandana, bowl of water and a cookie :)
We eat here usually a couple of times a year when were in the area. Â It's usually good but not always. Â If your order their specials, typically you can't miss there. Â Sitting on the porch in the Winter or outside in the summer is the best. Â Had Lobster Mac and Cheese last time I was there and it was great. Â Also you can get a bottle of wine with dinner without breaking the bank.
Review Source:I would give this restaurant 2-3 stars, but you can't do 1/2 stars so I'm giving it a 3. We went to Wildcat Tavern on a busy Friday night. The clam chowder was fantastic - creamy and flavorful, but not too creamy, and with bacon (love that). My fiance had a pretzel for his appetizer (weird, but it obviously gets ordered). It was loaded with salt that he had to pick off. For our meals, my fiance had the meatloaf and I had the roast chicken. The meatloaf came with excellent mashed potatoes and steamed carrots. The carrots didn't have too much flavor and the meatloaf left a puddle of oil on the plate. My roast chicken came with the same carrots and a mushroom risotto. I love risotto and was really excited for it, however it tasted like really strong white wine. I know you're supposed to cook risotto using wine, but it's done in the beginning and the alcohol cooks off - this tasted like it was drenched in wine before it came to the plate. What a bummer. The music was pretty good - they had a live band that everyone was into. Beer was cold - another plus! After writing this review, maybe I should change my rating to a 2...
Review Source:Six of us went for lunch today. Â The service in the courtyard was painfully slow. Â An hour into our stay our lunch arrived the only thing they did right was the boy's Kraft macaroni and cheese. Â The ?chowder? was milky water with potatoes and canned clams. Â The summer salads featuring feta cheese and calamata olives had none of the above. and the burrito was a cold wrap featuring lettuce and not much else. Â When we brought this to the attention of our server he actually said, "Are you talking to me?" Â Two hours into our ordeal we advise other diners to run while they had a chance. Â Wish someone would have told us the same.
Review Source:The bar side of the Wildcat Tavern is not a bad place to go for a drink or two and some music. The inside is cozy and old feeling, the bartenders are friendly and seem to know a lot of the folks who come here, and the entertainment can be decent. Jackson doesn't have a whole lot to offer for nightlife (Shannon Door, the piano bar at the Wentworth), so this is one of the few options in town if you want to have a relatively late night out.
Review Source:The Wildcat always struck me as a split-personality establishment. The front dining room is a little more formal and expensive than you might be looking for after a day on the Jackson cross-country trails, but the bar out back is really laid back, with some interesting musical acts. The Thompson House Eatery, a bit further around the loop, has food that is cheaper and at least as good.
I like the whole Jackson loop, including the covered bridge, Nestlenook, THE, the Wentworth Inn, and even the somewhat timeworn Shannon Door Pub.
Monday night is open-mike night and all the locals, ski instructors and area bartenders come here to party hard --- the place was packed. PBR tall boys for $2.fitty and plenty of drink specials as well. The music was cool sort of hippy-billy if you know what I mean. Bring cash, makes life a whole lot nicer
