The Woodland Opera House, led by Jeff Kean, is a year round community theatre producing both plays and musicals. They are a very supportive group and work hard to bring entertainment to Woodland. When not in use by the theatre company, the venue books concerts and other special events. Tip : Grab dinner at the Burger Saloon down the street before seeing a show!

Theater itself is nice and feels very authentic. The upper balcony area is very steep and hard to navigate. Someone fell at the show I attended. The backs of the seats on the balcony level are horrible if your older than 6. The view is great from up there but it definitely feels outdated and dangerous. The main auditorium, lighting, sound are all superb and it was easy to get a ticket. The staff was friendly and overall a nice experience. When you buy your tix...never go to the balcony level.

What a cool historic venue.  Saw the Nickel Slots rock this very cool old opera house, great sound and lighting, great stage.  More local bands should take advantage of this venue.  I also heard it was haunted.  I think I might have seen the ghost of Kenny Franklin Valentine dancing in the balcony during The Devils Chain Gang.

I would love to see another event at this cool venue.

    That's my story

The 5-star rating doesn't mean that you'll get a 5-star theater-going experience that you would find in London or New York but rather that this theater is what it represents itself to be and that it "is what it is" in the best way possible. It's an adorable old theater in historic Downtown Woodland. Consider dinner before the show at Tazina's Bistro (if you want something nice), Steve's Pizza (if you have kids with you), or Ludy's Mainstreet BBQ, (if it's a nice day and you can get out onto their patio).

I'm a bit biased because this is the first theater that I can remember seeing a professional production in as a child. The theater made an effort when I was younger, (and based on a version of A Christmas Story that I saw a couple of years ago... still makes an effort), to do family friendly plays during the holidays. It's small enough that even small children should be able to see the stage and feel as though they are near the action from any seat in the house. I don't know much about their theater program for young people from personal experience, but I admire their efforts to do this outreach.

The most recent production I have seen at the Woodland Opera House was A Christmas Story back in December 2008. It was a fun production and I enjoyed watching the cast.

Tip: If you have any balance problems or a fear of heights, do not get seats in the balcony. There's not a bad seat in the house and the balcony is fine for most people, but it is pretty steep and could be terrifying for people with low-vision, people who aren't good with stairs, or anyone with any kind of balance problems. No one wants to take a tumble!

A really fun place to see a play, or be in one! There's not a bad seat in the house. The interior maintains much of its 100+ years old grandeur, although in a modest, small-town way. It's community theatre that respects the material it performs and goes all out to present it dramatically, beautifully, and effectively. The leads are usually performed by accomplished semi-professional actors, but they still have room for some local amatuers to participate too. They also have a great Young People's Theatre program that gives kids a fun and thorough introduction to acting and technical experience in drama, music, and dance. My daughter participated in one of their workshops and has since found other kids' drama programs to be seriously lacking in commitment to true acting principles.
