440 has taken a dive in recent years as kitchen staff has changed. Â My wife and i ate here recently and she got the pork and i had the filet. I've worked in fine dining as a server for years (including this one) and she was the Director of Catering at William & Mary, so when we sent the kitchen back undercooked raw pork that wiggled when you touched it, we were told thats how its supposed to be cooked. Â Medium is acceptable with pork, not rare. Â We also ordered Bananas Foster for dessert because i remember a time 440 Main made the best. Â It arrived very soupy (sauce didnt solidify, only melted the ice cream... My guess is not enough brown sugar), soggy bananas, and the rum was overpowering. I dont know if they used too much or just didnt flambee it but either way... Terrible. So the kitchen is incompetent. The service was good, but there were mistakes made that you shouldnt see at a restaurant of that caliber. Â The only good thing that happened in that meal was i received a complimentary glass of wine because their brand of shiraz tastes corked... Very vinegary and bitter (wine by the glass options were very slim and my wife was pregnant).
Review Source:We were visiting family in the area and this was our first time in. Â Sam was our server. Â He was very sincere and attentive. Â Our table had fried green tomatoes, mussels, and Cajun spring rolls. Â All were excellent. Â I tried the gumbo, which I really enjoyed. Â Cajun food should have some spice to it, but it should not be uncomfortable to eat. Â Many places are afraid to put enough seasoning in their dishes, but the gumbo was just right. Â The entrees were all spot on as well. Â I ordered a couple of Manhatan martinis, so I can attest that the bartender knows what he is doing. Â Our group all concured that we will be back. Â The only regret that we found the place the last night of our stay, or I would have come back to try out the bar next door. Â 440 Main St., earned all five of the stars in this rating!
Review Source:I'm a Connecticut guy in Bowling Green KY....I really did not know what to expect any fine dining in this area but the concierge recommended 440 Main. Â I was somewhat skeptical about this place but let me tell you this place is the BOMB! Â I loved it! Â started with two appetizers the buffalo style fried oysters and the popcorn shrimp both were to die for the oysters were out of this world, amazing for this part of the Country. Â Then came the Jambalaya and the fried grouper over grits...are you kidding me!! Â they were so delicious they are probably the best I have had anywhere in the Northeast. Â Here is the best part...your in Kentucky right the home of KY bourbon. Â They offer three 1 oz drinks of local bourbon for $10 to $14 bucks! Â this alone in the Northeast would cost $40 $50. Â the Bourbon was very good, Â Here is what made the evening the OWNER is awesome! Â he knew we were from out of town and recommended everything we ate that night, he was friendly and made special request in the kitchen for us. Â who does that??....Highly recommend this place, if I lived here I would be a regular.
