I really love this place. They've got a great selection and everything I've had so far is amazing. My husband is not really a sushi fan so he always gets the chicken katsu. He loves it. The staff are very friendly and interactive. They do get busy so try to avoid the night crowd. The restaurant is pretty small so you might wait a while, but it's worth it.
Review Source:I loved this little sushi joint! There was a bit of a wait, but well worth it to sit at the sushi bar to try the delicious creations of our sushi chef Rio-san! It was my first time here but my partner has been going here for years, we just asked Rio to make us sushi and boy did he ever! He made us an assortment of rolls, which were fresh and delectable. We also ordered the mushroom soup appetizer which went perfectly with our custom-made dishes. It's a cute, small little neighborhood sushi spot that I will definitely visit again!
Review Source:My favorite in 0C. Â Small but true to The spirit of real Japanse Sushi. Having spent 27 trips to Japan over the last few years I've eaten some pretty awesome sushi. They have a great menu recommend trying the yellowtail cheek. Not much space for large groups. Great sashimi and sushi and their house rolls are all worthy of a try. Â Very Consistent service from attentive wait staff. Â Reservations are a good idea on the weekends.
Review Source:Last night I went 9 Style with a http://restaurant.com discount. Â I can't believe how many good reviews this place has and my only explanation is that people who love their sushi have not ever eaten REALLY GOOD SUSHI. Â Because then you would realize how awful this place is.
The basic tenets of a good sushi restaurant are cleanliness, fresh fish, icy cold drinks and good service. Â I can give 9 Style 1 star for service because they were attentive, seated us quickly, and cleared our empty plates quickly. Â However...
Waiting outside to be seated, we noticed the inside of their main window is lined with dust, dead flies, and grease on the blinds. Â That's disgusting. Â I tried to sit on their bench with one slat missing and other slats held together with chicken wire while we waited. Â Once we were seated, we ordered 2 beers that came out warm. Â This was the case for everyone that ordered beer--no one around us had a beer in a frosty bottle.
Still trying to give this place a chance, we order some sushi and sashimi, and a soft shell crab roll. Â The sashimi is covered in oil and other toppings, like the fish can't stand alone as a quality item. Â The roll is loosely held together, like who ever made it isn't taking the time to tightly roll it like you would expect. Â And then the flies come around. Â I can't tolerate eating raw fish in a place with a fly problem. Â Is it so hard to get a screen door or turn on your AC?
With one final effort we ordered the garlic roll. Â This was actually tasty. Â But only because of the sauce. Â A sushi restaurant should not be redeemed by the sauce it uses. Â
If you love sushi, avoid this place at all costs.
This IS the best sushi bar in San Clemente! Â Friendly staff but most importantly great food. They have a variety of rolls, specialty plates and very fresh fish. Â I would highly recommend this place. Â We have been searching for a good sushi place for the last year and found this gem.
Review Source:I'm not real sure what is wrong with San Clemente, but it appears there is not even so much as a marginally good sushi restaurant around. Â We've tried Taka-o and hated it. Â We've tried Ichibiri and it was mediocre at best. Â We were referred to 9 Style and were really excited. Â I was disgusted right away because the waiter who served our food had the most hideous, dreadful, rotten, decayed fingernails I have ever seen. Â Every single one of his fingernails looked like he had been soaking his hands in battery acid. Â Just dreadful for someone handling your food. Â
I'm a simple sushi patron. Â I don't really get too adventurous and usually just order salmon nigiri and sashimi, hamachi, maguro, red/orange dragon rolls, caterpillar rolls, and rainbow rolls. Â Why is it so difficult when you order salmon sushi/sashimi that they can't give you just that? Â They have to sprinkle crusty, dried seaweed and green onions on top and then dump what I can only guess is ponzu sause on top? Â The combination of flavors made it taste like motor oil. The toilet was out of order as well making an already bad situation worse since my children needed to use the restroom.
This was simply an all-around terrible experience topped off with a $90 lunch tab between 2 adults and 2 children. Â I'm not even sure how that's possible.
We came here on a Sunday night. I'd learned of 9 style not only from http://Restaurant.com, but also my roommate, who swears by it. I was surprised by how innovative the dishes here were. We ordered the Garlic 9 roll (albacore with garlic sauce and onions), the 9 style salad (5 types of sashimi with shrimp tempura, fried soft shell crab, imitation crab, and cherry tomatoes atop fresh greens, with a sesame dressing), and seared Cajun tuna wrapped around shisito peppers.
Everything was not only beautifully presented and promptly made, but also exquisitely delicious. My bf said that the Garlic 9 roll was possibly the best roll he had. It was also extra pungent but you will not get this anywhere else, so give it a try. I Â loved the salad--the fish was oh-so-fresh, the cherry tomatoes were sweet and plump, and the tempura and fried soft shell crab went perfectly with the crisp greens. I only wish there were more greens. The Cajun-tuna wrapped peppers were unique and delicious!
I *loved* this place, it is amongst my favorite sushi spots. We will certainly be back, even without our http://restaurant.com certificate.
Verdict: Innovative, fresh, and delicious. You won't get these flavors elsewhere.
I think the sushi was okay. I didn't like that they didn't make sushi to order. Maybe I am spoiled in that area, I lived in Hawaii for a number of years and really got to experiment.
The staff was friendly though we sat ourselves since no one greeted us but no problem just felt awkward.
We ordered their peno roll, lemon salmon roll, fried calamari, and banzai shrimp. We also ordered two beers and the total came out to around $50. I think their prices were fair. I am used to spending around $40 for just myself for Sushi (when I had no kids (: ) so it was nice to be able to enjoy it without breaking the bank.
I was kind of on the fence about their food. (Again, must warn Hawaii Sushi was what I ate, surrounded by water, heavy Asian influence.)
~The peno roll was nice it was really for my husband, to me the cream cheese was too much.
~The lemon salmon roll was again ordered by my husband. He doesn't like seafood but loves Sushi (crazy right). He actually thought they put too much lemon and wanted more of the salmon taste. I agree with him it was too much.
~To me the fried calamari was processed like fish sticks. I may be picky but I have been in Irish pubs that made fried calamari better like you could see the tentacles. So to me, if I am in a sushi place everything is fresh no if, and, or buts.
~The banzai shrimp was good. I liked the sauce, but again, I was having an issue with it tasting processed. I am half and half on this one.
The service was good. Even though we served ourselves (which wasn't a problem of course), they were good nothing exceptional just service. We had a http://restaurant.com coupon and they adjusted it quickly and was very courteous. I have heard horror stories with those so I was pleased. We got it as a gift and wanted to use it.
There really aren't many options when it comes to sushi around here. I would go to try other items. We only tried four so I will see if there are better ones out there. Happy Eats!
This place is pretty good, friendly servers
It would have been 10x better if it was all you can eat,
There aren't many choices for sushi rolls, id rather hop on my car and drive to mission viejo and eat at zenko sushi, all you can eat for 20 buckaroos, and a lot of different types of sushi rolls
This place may just be my favorite place for sushi in San Clemente. That is when I'm able to get a seat, because this place gets pretty crowded during peak hours such as the weekend evenings.
I usually stick to sushi thats not too dressed up like those spider rolls or California rolls that they like to serve at other sushi places. I prefer simple sushi, like Uni, yellowtail, tuna or whatever's fresh and what the sushi chef recommends. Â Last time I took the chefs recommendation, I had a quickly seared scallop. Thats something that I never had at other sushi place and it was really good! The other offerings I had were seasoned very lightly, enhancing the fresh seafood.
Last time I was there, they were out of a lot things. The chef made some very good suggestions and the sushi was very fresh tasting, which is why I'm definitely going to come back. I may wait for my spot at the sushi table, but its worth it.
We found this place on http://restaurant.com drove all the way from costa mesa. Â We did omakase, so here's what we had:
poki salad: tastes like chinese style chicken?
shishito pepper wrap in tuna tataki: way too salty
9 style white fish mushroom: the only "ok" one
and then a whole bunch of seared sushi, which we think their fishes weren't fresh enough to serve it raw. Â
then we asked for Toro, uni, sweet shrimp, and monkfish liver...but none of them are in stock!
I guess the chef felt sorry afterward, so he gave us some complimentary ice cream...but overall I would say pretty disappointed, since we drove 45 mins there, hungry; and didn't get to eat the stuff that we like...
9 style is a good sushi place. The Koba roll is very good, mushroom with white fish appetizer is excellent and I really recommend their crunchy rolls. Probably the best I have had.
Atmosphere is decent. Lots of Japanese yelling back and forth which adds to the fun. It's a bit like ordering sushi at Hattori Hanzo's joint in Kill Bill II.
Servers are pleasant enough, but they seemed overwhelmed by the crowd. This place gets busy. I recommend you make reservations if you are planning a night out with your paisano's, especially during peak dinning hours. Â Maybe because it was a Saturday night but our server disappeared towards the end of the night and we had to hunt down other servers to get drink refills. This normally irritating task of hunting down wait staff didn't bother me as much since I attributed it to them not having enough people to handle the crowd. A problem they should address but I didn't take it personally.
This place is cramped! I don't mind small settings (I actually prefer to large, chain restaurants) but there is no room to move in this joint. When packed to capacity, You have to pole-vault over other patrons to get to the bathrooms.
Waiting for a table is also an issue. Get use to waiting outside unless you want to give a lap dance to the people sitting at the sushi bar. They need to rearrange their tables or remove a couple to make it more comfortable to garner another star. I still recommend you give it a try. I will go back.
I just moved to San Clemente a few months ago... I didn't think there would be any decent Asian food here, period. Â I was wrong, very wrong indeed (well, I think this is the ONLY one I've found so far... Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants here are still very disappointing.)
Although they still serve "sushi rolls" there, their real sushi are actually very good. Â They still have the more "Japanese" items such as the monk fish liver, fermented soy beans, etc. Â They tend to use a lot of sweet ponzu sauce on the sushi, I honestly think the fish is fresh enough and is better had they not put the sauce on them. Â
My favorite here are the aji (spanish mackerel) and the tai (red snapper) omg... so fresh, so tasty!! Â The sweet onion salad's also great... not to mention about the quail egg shooters (oh man, the list would just keep growing...)
The staff are really nice too... Â So go early since the place is kinda small.
GO HERE.
I'm not kidding. That is, if you're into really awesome things.
The sushi here is DELISH. The rolls are unique and creative. I always get the Ojisan Roll (I think that's the name) Its all fish wrapped in cucumbers with a spicy peanut sauce ish thing on the side. So if you're not a rice lover, this is a place that you will enjoy.
Along with the first roll I mentioned I've had the following: the Garlic 9 (good, but I'm not that into California Rolls with a yummy explosion on top. Why cant the whole roll be a yummy explosion and not half fake sushi?), The Lettuce Wrap Roll which is fish and avocado and some other veggies with all fresh fish and a shrimp I think, the Spicy Tuna Crunchy Roll which is a Spicy Tuna Roll deep fried so an obvious winner and a Spicy Yellowtail Handroll that was not too much rice (hate when they do that with hand rolls) and great spicy sauce.
The service is good. The sushi chefs all say "Hello!" when you walk into the place. I am assuming that they are saying that since it is in another language.
I've eaten at many a sushi joints. MANY. And I would say that whoever didn't like this place is way too much of a sushi snob to appreciate good sushi, which they probably wouldn't know anyway.
Wow, this place is spectacular! Â I've been to many different sushi places, and for this price and quality, I'm not sure you can find a better value. Â
Their Garlic 9 roll is so clever and delicious, it's worth a visit just for that roll alone. Their cucumber tuna roll is out of this world as well! Â
The location is also nice, after dinner you can stroll down Del Mar and walk off the meal. Â
Must try!
After trying a number of sushi places around south county, this place is the best mix of small-town local feel and terrific fresh sushi.
WE LOVE the garlic 9 roll. Â (we being my wife and I)
The staff is always friendly, and we go here constantly for our date nights.
It is small in there so see if you can make a reservation if you want to go on a busy night.
Found this place off of http://Restaurant.com
I'm disappointed. As a sushi connoisseur, I deem this place's sushi as super weak. We walked in and didn't get seated immediately. It was very awkward standing in the door way. The prices are "normal" but not for what we got. The yellowtail sushi was sooo skinny. SUCH A RIP. The poke sauce on the poke bowl and Hawaiian roll was soo salty, it was overbearing. The wasabi is NOT FRESH, definitely the most disappointing. The ginger is bought from some cheap place, (it's the pink, not the light tan-colored). The (younger) servers were nice, but the older woman was a little rude. I will not be returning here.
SO OVERRATED.
I came back for another night out with my gal Luci. Â This was super great! Â Our server was so cute we were crushing on her. Â She had the prettiest smile and bouncy hair. Â Adorable!
The food was so good. Â Everything we ordered was so fresh and delicious. Â It came quick and added up quickly! Â Our bill was 52 bucks for the two of us no including tip. Â We got the Garlic 9 roll which was the least favorite, but still yum. Â We go a dish with salmon and mushrooms and asparagus. Â I believe it was covered in ponzu sauce, now this was soooo good. Â Even the spicy tuna roll was perfect! Â Totally a treat! Â Can't wait to go there with my hun bun!! Â :)
Went here on vacation. Â Sushi was excellent. We had the garlic 9 roll, salmon lemon cut roll and super California roll. We also had beef teriyaki and the white fish mushroom. Â The highlight was definitely the sushi. Â Although the place was small, it was very inviting and friendly wait staff to boot.
Will come back next time we're down in orange county and bring friends
The seared (with a blowtorch) scallop suhsi - wow! Â Probably the best sushi I've ever had. Â Very good use of garlic. Â The decor and the service create a friendly and laid back atmosphere. Â
I was cruising down the 5, realized I was very hungy, and typed in sushi and San Clemente into my PDA. Â Thanks again yelp - don't know that I would have gone to the place in the strip mall with the liquor store and laundromat on my own
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!! Â Even that statement doesn't do my sentiments justice. Â I used to frequent this restaurant at least once a week when I lived in San Clemente 2 years ago. Â Upon returning to So-cal after living in Hawaii, I was ecstatic to find that the restaurant has not changed a bit. Â The authentic Japanese decor, staff and chefs are still there. Â The friendly and fast service is still present and the FOOD is still as amazing as ever. Â I think the prices may have gone up a little bit, but I'm not complaining. Â You get what you pay for. Â
Let's discuss food: Â I came in STARVING last night for some sushi. Â Specifically: Â Yellow Tail and jalapeno roll, Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll and Dragon Roll. Â Of course you have to have yellow tail, tuna and salmon Sashimi, Add that to some Miso Soup, White Fish Mushrooms and garden salads, and you have yourself a meal from HEAVEN. Â The rolls are made perfectly, without too much rice, fresh fish and just a dab of sauce to compliment the flavors. Â The salad has fresh greens and delicious Japanese dressing. Â The White Fish Mushroom-- TRY IT! Â It is a melt-in-you-mouth treat. Â
I feel really bad because I am such an elitist when it comes to sushi. Â But when I see Japanese chefs consistently making such tasty and price-friendly food, I can't help but fall in love. Â Surprising to find such a great sushi place in such a predominantly white area, but hey, I'll take it! Â DEFINITELY make this a stop if you are craving great Japanese food in a great location. Â Post meal, you can roll over to the triangle and check out the fun local bars of San Clemente.. those reviews will come later on. Â Enjoy!
I brought a group of 15 here for dinner while on a retreat in San Clemente.
With 10 minutes notice.
After calling 9 Style to make sure they'd be able to seat us, we headed over and sure enough, they seated us promptly. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside (and it's next to a liquor store), but it's quite nice on the inside, albeit small. Because they have booth tables, our group was split into two, which was fine.
The service was good: friendly, attentive, and from what I can remember, quite fast. The food was delicious. I had a teriyaki dish (wasn't really feeling sushi at the moment) which came on a sizzling platter and was quite tasty. Even better were my boyfriend's sushi rolls which were FANTASTIC. I love eel, and theirs was absolutely delicious. I think he got a crunchy/spicy roll of some sort, unique to the restaurant - also delicious.
It's been a while, so I can't remember pricing details but I DO remember thinking that we made a fantastic restaurant choice for our dinner that night and it was completely worth whatever we paid.
Highly recommended, and I hope to go back sometime if I'm ever in the area again.
High quality sushi/sashimi, and the rolls are very tasty with a wide variety of creations that blend great ingredients and aren't too funky.
The dining room is clean and bright, and the service was excellent. Â The staff seemed mostly Japanese so be patient with the English as a second language as they are very nice and accommodating.
Ohhhhhhh my gosh... this place is SO GOOD!!! The cutest Hawaiian/Asian decor, the most attentive service, and the best darned sushi/rolls in San Clemente!
We had the Garlic 9 Roll (albacore with lots of garlic, topped with red onions), Â the T Street Roll (crab meat, avocado, etc., deep fried) Â and the sushi combo plate (12 or so pieces of sushi, accompanied with miso soup and small salad). The sushi was so fresh. The rolls were on the small side, but nonetheless fantastic.
Also, don't let the outside of this place scare you away. Yes, it's sandwiched between a ghetto-fabulous Mexican restaurant and a liquor store (kept us away initially!). Just as Susan Boyle taught us, great things can come out of something, um, not pretty.
This sushi greatness isn't cheap, hence the minus one star. Our total for the three items and a soda came to about $45, pre-tax. Don't think I I can get my penny-pinching hubby to take me here again anytime soon. : ( In the meantime, I'll just have to dream of this crazy good sushi...
In response to Sarah's review, did you let the restaurant know this was a mistake? Or are you content to simply bash the place here on the internet, where the owners are probably too busy to log on and defend themselves? So, was your "experience absolutely awful" or were you "too distracted to notice the rest of the meal?" You cannot have it both ways!!
I'm a professional chef by trade for the past 17 years, and 9 Style is in my top 5 sushi places around California. I've eaten all around the country, including Hawaii extensively, and I recommend this sushi very highly. Excellent and cozy atmosphere, outstanding staff, and reasonably priced for the locale. The only reason it doesn't get a 5 in my book is that score is reserved for perfection, which hardly any establishment can hope to achieve.
