Enjoyed a very nice meal last night. Â The chicken and vegetable soup was great. Â Many large pieces of chicken, Â fresh vegetables, and a made from scratch tasting broth. Â The garden salad was good, and we both wished that the breads where more outstanding.
But the main dish (Baby Walleye) was fantastic. Â We each received 2 large filets that where lightly breaded and deep fried.
For desert we enjoyed a seasonal treat of Strawberry Shortcake.
I was here as a destination because this is where they had the yearly event celebrating the "supper "club. This place had one of the best buffets ever. I've never seen cheese curds on a buffet. It's the only thing I went back for, even though I was stuffed. The other highlights were bbq ribs and prime rib. They had some really good side salads and chicken wings. The owners and staff were great. I got quite the education on the second thing WI is famous for.
Review Source:This is a wisconsin classic! Â A delightful, very old wisconsin supper club. Â Log cabin, built in the 30s - this place screams vintage Wisconsin kitsch. Â Bar was busy, even for a tuesday, and service was attentive. Â Be sure to grab a few drinks before dinner.
Dinner service was outstanding, prices reflect quality and value. Â Complimentary crackers & cheese is a nice touch, meals come with salads or soups - everything was good. Â I had the icelantic haddock - it was a massive meal I almost couldnt finish. Â Taste was spot on delicious, a perfect Wisconsin fish dish. Â Others had the ribeye (delicious), the Walleye platter (incredible!) and the chicken alfredo (classic!). Â
Absolutely recommended!
A true Northwoods super club where the locals go to eat. This restaurant is located in a very wooded setting but close enough to town that a person doesn't worry about hitting a deer after dinner. We went in and made reservations on a Friday night, but we couldn't even wait by the bar for a table because this place was so full, which was fine because the area is so beautiful we just went for a picturesque drive and short walk while we waited. There was a piano player singing by the bar too. We loved the family style fish dinner, all you can eat fried fish, col slaw, potato pancakes, apple sauce, marbled rye bread, potato salad, and french fries brought to your table. Usually I get my fish baked but I really enjoyed the fried fish here because the breading was light and the pieces of cod were so big. Classic log cabin ambiance with a very nice stone fire place make for a very relaxed dinner out here. We will be back!
Review Source:This place is a cute log cabin. Â We waited over an hour for our table due to the busy fish fry Friday night. Â Once at the table, our dinner came quick. Â We opted to both have the fish fry. Â Our server was fast and came right out with their all-you-can-eat family-style dinner. Â The fish is a thick white fish with a breading. Â They also served us French fries, potato pancakes, cole slaw, tuna salad, potato salad, and homemade walnut bread. Â The fish was good but the side salads were heavy with mayo. Â The homemade bread was a home run but the potato pancakes were okay. Â The lady bartender was awesome. Â She managed to keep drinks rolling to the waiting crowd of 100+ people standing 3 deep around the bar.
Review Source:I was in Rhinelander for business, and wanted a good steak, I went against some of the review and came here anyways. When I entered, the bar was not manned, but it was early little after 5:00 pm. I waited for a short time and the bartender returned and seated me.
I ordered the rib eye, medium rare, it came rare but I tasted it any ways, and the flavor was so good, I did not return it. The breaking on the onion, I didn't care for, but it wasn't bad. But there was a slightly off flavor to the baked potato.
The waitress was very prompt and attentive.
I am glad that it was a smoke free, though you could tell that at one point there was smoking.
With that said, because of the good flavor of the steak and being smoke free I will return again.
My family has vacationed in Rhinelander since the 1960s but we rarely ate out.  This visit I was determined to venture out to a local eatery.  We chose the Al-Gen Supper Club because it looked like what we were looking for - - And It Is!  It was built in the 1930s and still retains that old supper club feel.  It looks like a log cabin inside with a big fireplace and there are many taxidermied animals and fish on the walls. The wait staff was friendly and it has an overall family friendly atmosphere and is smoke free.  We went to the Friday night fish fry.  I'm giving this review four stars because although the supper club feel was the real deal, the food was disappointing.  The fish they served was cod  : (  and really not all that tasty.  I noticed that on Thursday nights they have a baby walleye fry special.  I think we'll try that one next time.  Overall though, we had a great time.
Review Source:The closest thing to a "Twin Peaks" experience in Rhinelander. It has a log cabin feel, small town hospitality, and great food....for fried mid-western fare.
We had just got to town (work trip) and got a tip from a local to check Al-Gen. We went for the Friday night fish fry (that all the restaurants seem to have in the area.)
We entered into a full bar and all heads turned...then, found our way into the dining area and were seated. The log cabin walls, multiple fireplaces, and soft lighting made for some good pics and great atmosphere.
The fish fry comes with potato salad, macaroni salad, cole slaw, bread, and delicious fish. I don't normally eat fried fish, or fried anything for that matter, but it was a great experience.
It's Friday a week later, and we are all going again!
