sorry  this place sucks.
2 years ago after being on road since 6 a.m. and getting there at 9 on friday night, bartender never told us kitchen closing early so at 930 went to order and waitress told us closing kitchen early cause cooks were hot/tired wtf is that about. since i knew her and was a good customer think she should have told me before closed. not even a slice of pizza even though they always have slices after kitchen closes at ten.. she gave me bs excuse chef  was hot/tired arent we the customer ? find a new cook and if he cant handle heat get the hell out of kitchen.  her bs excuses didnt go well w me and she knew when no tip.  food just as good at 99 over the bridge. Â
so like a fool i go back at 6 last friday night(2 years later) i am alone and woman at bar conveniently saves onl;y seat available at bar with ice water . friday dinner time and lo and behold the seat is saved for owner 20 minutes later. Â how arrogant and lack of customer focus is that so after 20 mins of trying to get a seat the bartender trie d to give 2 seats to lovely sleezy couple who knew i was before them. as you can guess i got the seat.
food not good quality, yes cheap but who needs their arrogant bs ! Â not me
can you imagine owner taking seat at bar during busiest time, not first time seen her do it good luck i wont be back !
Monday June 17 , decided to have lunch @ the Anchor . Wait staff slow , We decided to have the Crab crakes as Appertiser . Three of us decided to have the Baked Haddock ,and the other a lobster Roll. Well, We recieved our Entrees , And the Crab cakes @ the same time Hello this is an Appertiser , The Haddock was cold , fishy smelling and tasting with Ritz cracker thrown on Top. well i took one bite , looked down on my plate , And there was a wire , Yes a wire Bristle in the fish sticking out . God , i pray i didn't eat any, pointed out to our Wait staff ,no Apology, just do you want another or something else . No Thank You . This was the worst dining , i ever encountered. I just might contact the Owner on this One ... Beware , people of things in your food ...
Review Source:How much you will enjoy this place really depends on the type of person you are. This is a proper pub through and through, with really friendly but rough service, a homey frazzled vibe, and lots of men who own pickup trucks. It's old and worn around the edges, and also makes you question the hygiene, but there isn't anything incriminating. In fact, if this is what you are expecting, it's very honest and fun.
And the food is dirt cheap with gigantic portions. If you are going for quantity over quality, then it's totally worth it. The lobster roll was super stuffed (although there was a lot of shredded lobster meat) and more than passable. Everything else was kind of meh, including crab cakes, fried clams, and stuffed flounder. The fried onions and french fries were really meh as well. There was little in the way of seasoning or flavor development.
In other words, this is a honest to goodness pub. Don't come expecting a gastropub, as there are no pretentions here of trying to make food that's any more interesting than as it is described in the menu.
Went there for breakfast and I gotta say I loved it. My wife got a full breakfast of eggs homefries and toast for under $3! Mine was more expensive cause it was eggs with Delicious steak tips!
I spent a lot of the meal looking at amazement at the board listing the specials they were running. So many seafood dishes that have prices that seemed ridiculously low! The people who recommended this place to me swear the seafood is really good here- I now need to go back and try it out for myself.
One thing I wish though is that there was a second entrance directly to the seating area, for my first fifteen feet after entering I was regretting being there as I had to walk past a massive dim-lit bar full of alckeys getting their drink on to prepare for the upcoming afternoon. Just makes me feel gross having to go thru that.
Cash only, they have an ATM. Parking situation seems good.
The Anchor is definitely a local bar- some people call it a dive bar ... but I am undecided. Overall, the drinks are very affordable and they don't cheap out on you. I was disappointed when I brought a friend from NH as they only accept MA ID. The food is a bit better than average. I've had loads of seafood and never been disappointed but some of their other foods are just OK. Overall I really like it here- it's a place where you can hang out at the bar and get affordable seafood that you can trust. They have pool tables, darts, a decently sized bar and a dining room. I would say that the service can be quite slow but you can tell that the people that work here love it.
Review Source:The anchor is a small joint with a long bar. The food is always on point and inexpensive. The drinks are strong and wont pin down your wallet by far. The specials change daily and are pretty well priced and prepared. TVs, pool tables , dart boards, local conversation and Keno are enough to keep you entertained while dining. Being right on the water the seafood is very fresh. Overall cheap drinks, great inexpensive food and mixed crowd. Worth the visit
Review Source:Five stars despite their refusing to serve us alcohol.
They only accept Massachusetts ID or a Passport to serve you alcohol because of some new fake ID group that is making scannable out-of-state IDs. Â Hopefully this will be resolved soon, but for the time being the whole town of Beverly decided that out-of-state IDs cannot be accepted anywhere in the town. Â The guys at the Anchor were really nice about it, and the food made up for not having a beer with dinner.
The lobster roll was awesome: a giant mound of fresh, sweet lobster on a bun that I couldn't even see at first, and it was only $15. Â Great clam chowder as well.
Where else can you go and get a decent sized burger (cooked to your perfection) with lettuce, tomato, mayo and onion on a bulky roll, pub fries, a cold draft beer and tip for $10. That's right, nowhere.....or.....except "The Anchor". Oh, and they throw in a pickle as well.
I heard that the small pan pizzas are good too but I usually stick with the burger.
In the past, I've also had the fried calamari for an appetizer which was also quite good if you like that kind of thing??
Good place for people watching..great local dive bar. Â We had dinner there last night and it was ok. The GF ordered a tuna salad sandwich and it looked good. Â I had the broiled haddock and it was covered with oyster crackers (or maybe saltines)..wtf? Â I've had baked fish with ritz crackers/parsley/butter but never oyster crackers. And they didn't even seem to be baked with the fish but rather added after cooking. Â Weird...stay away from the baked haddock. Â Good beer selection, the bar tenders were very attentive, and prices were quite reasonable. Cash only but they have an ATM machine.
Review Source:Service took forever, Â we were there for two hours for lunch!!
apps were good:
Stuffed clam - delish.
Clam chowder - lukewarm, thick and chunky, not a chowder, more of a paste.. but good flavor.
Disappointed with the baked sea scallops -- no flavor and bland.
Lobster roll - pretty good.
It was a Pats game so maybe they were just slammed, but it's sort of divey, and CASH ONLY. Â
probably a good place to watch the game etc, but not exactly great food.
I like dive bars, but this place smelled so bad of bad fish that I was scared I was going to smell like bad fish when I left. Â I met a friend there and the staff seemed nice, but it really smelt horrible. Â My firend said the smell was from the guys that work on the boats, not the place, but I guess that their clientel. Â So if your looking ot land yourself a smelly fisherman or want ot sit next to one, then this is your place- not mine.
Review Source:Steak tips. Have had them a few times in the last couple months, and don't know how I missed them for so long. They're great....for whatever they cost, $8 or so? Nicely marinated, not gourmet, or overdone, but just good old tasty pub food. Rice, fries, or roasted potatoes...don't stray too far aside on the sides though.
Clam roll is still a winner. Same with the lobster roll. Hit it.
Breakfast is still good...you know like when you leave your car nearby after a long night of rumdrinks (safety first), why not have breakfast? Onestop shopping!
Completely reiterate Natalie T's review! This place is absolutely disgusting. Â Overpriced garbage food and surly SLOW waitstaff. Â If you can get in early and get a seat at the crowded bar for some cheap beer - go for it. Â Otherwise you are left to stand around hoping for a table - which feels like it's in someones outdated basement - replete with moldy smell! When you finally do get a seat, and an order taken - don't expect a refill on any drink and the food is BEYOND bad and tiny portions. Â "Fresh" fish shouldn't be shaped in a perfect square patty. Â UGH. Â Whenever we drive by this place we re-live the nightmare inside. Â There is also no parking as it's on an armpit of the street. Â Everyone inside is 60+. Â Don't bother.
Review Source:It's hard for me to write a completely accurate review since we didn't actually eat any food here. That's because we left before even being seated. We went at 8pm on a Friday night and expected it to be busy, but we weren't even acknowledged until we hunted a bartender down to ask what the seating procedure was. Since the place is so small, we had to stand against the wall behind customers at the bar and wait. Again, no one acknowledged us at all, until a woman roughly informed us that it would "be a while" and then told us to get out of the doorway - so we got out of the doorway and right back into the car.
From what we could tell, the menu was pretty lacking (only about nine options), though the prices did seem very good. Make sure you bring cash, or use the ATM they have there, since it's cash only. Also, don't expect to drink if you look young and you're from out of state - only Massachusetts IDs are accepted.
This place is disgusting. The haddock and sole were clearly old, tough, and inedible, who knows how long they were sitting in the back of the freezer. The stuffed clams at the "bargain $1.50 price" were frozen and store-bought. The mashed potatoes came from a box, the green beans and corn came from cans... We were over charged because the server kept track of the tab via pen and paper and couldn't read her own hand writing afterwards. (What do they even have cash registers for?) Honestly, if you want to drop $50 on frozen processed food then this is your place What a waste.
I hear they have lobster and strong drinks for cheap, yoi may need that drink after eating here.
$9 for a TALL -we're talking about a pint glass tall- gin&tonic (with tanqueray) plus a pint of Guinness at the bar. That started off our great night at Anchor Pub & Grille. It was a Saturday night so there was a crowd as well as a waiting list for eating in the dining room, but the wait was offset by the great atmosphere (more warm and comfortable than divey) and the strong drinks at awesome prices!
When we sat down at the table about half an hour later, we went overboard with the ordering and stuffed ourselves silly - 2 boiled lobsters with a side of cole slaw (2 for $12.99 that day), jalapeno poppers ($4.99 iirc), 2 stuffed clams @ $1.50 each, and a chilli burger with awesome tasting chilli and fries (~$6). It was a feast and incredibly, all the food was fresh and delicious. I used to think that $12.99 for one lobster at Roy Moore's fish shack up in Rockport was a great deal (and it is), but Anchor blew that one out of the water!
If you're looking for great, fresh tasting seafood and comfort foods PLUS ridiculously cheap drinks, this is the place to go. The quality & freshness of the food is attested by their list of daily specials, which gets progressively smaller as the night went on (yes, we spent a few hours there, it was that good). The drinks speak for themselves, as there are plenty of locals at the bar (which has keno!).
PS - parking may be tough to get, so good luck! :)
Oh. my. shnaps. Â I have never had so much marvelous lobster at so cheap my entire life. Â
Lobster Pie - full chunks of lobsters breaded with ritz crackers...tell me, how can that be wrong.
Boiled lobsters - $12 for 2 of them. Wow...wow...
My new spot im hitting whenever im north of Boston.
Started yelping around to find some good seafood on our vacation. Â Found the Anchor and saw that it had great reviews so had to try it...
The reviews were dead on. Â This place is casual, cheap and the food is excellent!
Twin lobsters for 13.95!!!
Sit at the bar, it is very entertaining for sure. Â Everyone is so friendly.
Played a few games of keno but no luck:(
Cheap drinks!
Best lobster roll I've had in Massachusetts. For a dive bar they make a Maine-style lobster roll. Toasted split hot dog roll, lined with iceberg lettuce and filled to overflowing with a ton of fresh lobster meat mixed with just enough mayo to hold together.
The lobster roll was so big my partner and I split it. the fries were crisp and good as well.
LOBSTER ROLL!!!
So huge, so delicious!
My dad and I visited Anchor Pub and Grille after a brief visit to Salem. Â I was on the hunt for a lobster roll and he was on the hunt for a burger. Â We were happily satisfied with both at this spot.
Ok - it's definitely no frills - a dive I'd call it. Â The bar was full of apparent regulars. Â We sat in the dining area off the bar (alone). Â It was quite cute in a beach-y sort of way. Â
Service was slow (she admitted that she forgot about us - which was pleasantly honest)...but our server was the only one working and she was quite nice. Â
I have to go with a 3 due to the strange atmosphere (I normally love a good dive, but this didn't really mesh well with the dining room and the dive bar). Â The bar area was a bit dingy, but the bathrooms were spotless, which is a plus. Â Food was great! Â Food was also super cheap! Â
A definite visit if you're in the area.
Um. The Anchor is like a train wreck that you can't pull yourself away from. My friend fully admitted it was "divey" but that they made up for it with their good, affordable seafood & their big, strong drinks. I can't argue with that... We rolled up on Sunday afternoon and the parking lot was PACKED. Walking through the shattered door with duct tape on it, we were thrown into another dimension. There were people everywhere! Playing pool, drinking beer, chowing food. Every single seat was taken. What the heck is this place? They must be doing something right!
I still don't entirely understand the appeal, except that you can be REALLY LOUD, and get sloppy on the cheap-cheap. Hey wait - maybe I do understand the appeal after all. At the very least this place is super entertaining. The cops came to arrest some guy that stole someone's car, and ended up arresting the pizza guy for outstanding warrants. It was like a reality show full of twists and turns!
And while I'd love to comment on the food, my husband and I are on a diet, so I really shouldn't. Except that you should not go here for a salad. Oh no, please spare yourself. But DO try the lobster roll. It is ALL meat, and at $14, how could you say no? Plus, they serve their (strong) Cape Codders in 16oz beer glasses. F-yeah! I can feel the townie-ness rubbing off on me already!! (see my friend Larry sitting atop a lobster roll in the Pictures section)
We were looking for a cheap seafood place, and Yelp pointed me to this dive bar.
First, the area around this place is a little on the sketchy side, but it seems more blue collar than ghetto.
The service is pretty darn good, though, and the food is amazing. Twin lobsters for Market Price at most places would run $20+, but it was only $12 here (and from what I've heard that's not even considered cheap for them). However, the lobsters were incredibly fresh and delicious. Everything else was great, too. Haddock and chips was fantastic (not too fried, but not soggy and brittle), and the steamed mussels were cheap, fresh, and tasty. Best of all, not only were we full at the end of the night, but so were our wallets :).
The only ding I give them is the beers they have on tap. The best they had was Bass and Sierra Nevada, which isn't a bad thing, but I was hoping for some local microbrews. However, the beer is pretty darn cheap compared to other places. If you're tastes aren't as refined (or you're just looking to get hammered for cheap), they do have all the domestic brews (and PBR for any hipsters out there).
I moved to Beverly recently and have been really missing my favorite dive bar, The Tam. Â I miss the laid back vibe. Â I miss the sweet but surly bartenders. Â I miss the cavalcade of misfits, drunks, losers, and sweet down to earth people that find their way through the door. Â Most of all, I miss the community of it all. Â Having a place where people know your name and are actually happy to see you.
I wont say that after 5 visits to the Anchor it is already like the Tam - as clearly, NO BAR can ever replace the Tam - but the Anchor is the Beverly version of the Tam plus really good seafood.
The Anchor has cheap beer....good food (so far the pizza was solid and the baked haddock was solid)...and great prices. Â The staff (much like the customers) are a bit rough around the edges and surly at first glance. Â But over time, as you get to know them (and they get to know you) things change. Â They become funny, accommodating, and VERY heavy on the pour if you know what I mean. Â I have been here for 4+ hours on a numbers of occasions (OK I am a booze bag), and have NEVER spent more than 40 dollars...and that includes the nights I ate a full meal.
You wont get lucky here (unless your standards have slipped to somewhere south of the Mendoza line), and this isnt the place to impress your new boss or future mother in law. Â But if a good solid, down to earth, local North Shore spot is what you are looking for - the Anchor is your kind of place. Â I will be back.
This is one of the better cheap bars/pubs I've been to. The house beer (PBR) is $1.50 per glass, the food is cheap and decent, and the crowd is all local folks. They have a dining area if that's your thing, as well as pool tables, Keno, etc. Don't expect great, quick service here, but do expect the servers to be friendly and funny.
We had a table of 7 people the other night, dinner+drinks+appetizers came out to $68. That's pretty damn cheap.
The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because they are CASH ONLY, something that annoys me greatly.
Now THIS is Lenny's kind of place! Â If you ain't a townie type, you might feel a little intimidated by this place, but it's cheap, good, and the beer's really, really cold. Â They serve typical bar / pub food, Â and you can watch the dudes cooking in the kitchen, right off of the bar. Â The lobsters are supposedly cheap and caught by the owner lady, but I can't confirm that...she does look like a lobsterman, though, so it's probably true.
It's hard to get a seat at the bar come Thursday, and forget it completely on Friday and Saturday nights...the bar will be 3 - 4 deep at times, and late into the evening it tends to fill up with 20-somethings, so be prepared...bump into one and they'll want to fight you. Â Sheesh...stupid kids...they're all so cute I never want to break 'em, though.
They serve breakfast starting at 8:00 (not sure, but I think its every day) and it is excellent, wholesome chow. Â Do this...it will be good for your soul!
They have a good dart setup and pool table area, if that's what you're into. Â I think they run dart leagues here so, once again, just be prepared for that crowd (stop it...you know who you are).
Wholesome biker chicks have been spotted here from time to time - by me and my spies - so this place gets an aroused thumbs-up from me!
Ride safe.
Can't give it a five because it isn't mindblowing, but the Anchor doesn't get enough respect!
Great menu for cheap eats, all the apps are good, great to split with friends while grabbing beers. Â Chowder is great, chili is freakin hot, but tremendous. Â Twin Lobster special is usually the lowest priced on the North Shore (and it is quality lobster). Â The daily special board is always loaded with good eats, real homecooked type meals. Â You can't go wrong with anything on that board!
Drinks are dirt cheap, sometimes the bar service can be a little slow because the place is PACKED at dinner time. Â This is an absurdly popular place to chow. Â Pizza is suprisingly tasty and pretty underrated. Â They often keep some warm for late night ordering, which is nice if you come in there late.
Everyone that works there is generally very friendly (especially if you're friendly to them) and the patrons are the salt of the Earth types, a little loud and rowdy at times, but good blue collar people. Â The barstaff and waitstaff know how to give and take with the patrons, so expect a little playful sarcasm.
They don't take plastic, so bring cash (there is an on site ATM, but with a $2 fee). Â Also, bring your appetite, as they don't skimp on portions.
Remember, this is an update, not a full review.
Had a craving for lobster and since the Anchor is near the docks and brings in its own lobsters, they're reasonably priced. Â As of this review, I paid $19.95 for twin lobsters which came with 1 side. Â If you split them between 2 people, there's a $2 fee in order to prevent people from circumventing the single lobster price.
The bartenders/servers are friendly locals like the patrons. Â When it comes to eating lobster only, I tend to get hyperfocused because it's not really a meal... it's an experience. Â And they were good to not bother me with silly small stuff... whereas most waitstaff, understandable, are checking with you ever 5 minutes to make sure everything is ok.
During a lobsterfest, leave me alone. Â And, they did.
Good n fresh, price is right... go get 'em!
Food: 5 stars
Service: 3
Ambiance: 3.5 - It's a bar/restaurant. Decent place.
Overall: 4.5 stars
LOBSTER FEAST at a dive bar in the middle of nowhere! 2 lobs for $15.95 in mid-January 2009. Â Thank you Ellen for bringing us here! Â And this is my first time giving props to anyone in my reviews.
I go here all the time for lunch, dinner and to just hang out. Order an Anchor Beer (PBR) for 1.50 and the Anchor Burger (Bacon, cheese, chili) and you can't go wrong. This place is always packed for dinner. The best seats are at the bar or dining room but with more than 2 people that might be tough. It sucks sitting any where else because the waitresses sort of forget about you.
The prices are very cheap but the food quality is better than you'd think. The main menu is pretty standard. Sandwiches, burgers, salads, fried and baked fish and things but the specials are normally pretty, um, special. Wow that is the worst description I have ever given. Â I think I need a red bull.
I'll be there tonight!
I'll start like this. 16oz. Bud draughts for $1.75. My wifes seltzer was $2.00 but my beer was $1.75 (I told her she should think of switching over) I don't think I really need to any further than that but I will. Fried oysters? Outstanding. Seafood casserole? Outstanding The Anchor Burger? Outstanding.
It may be a little rough around the edges for some folks. It's a blue collar bar but I'm a blue collar guy and the people who work there couldn't be nicer.
Best thing about it? I just moved right down the street so it's a short walk there.
And a short stumble home.
I've only been to The Anchor for breakfast (3 times: once with a group, once in a couple, once alone at the bar). The waitstaff couldn't be nicer. The breakfasts are standard fare, but CHEAP.
The eggs were a little harder than ordered on two of the occasions, but otherwise The Anchor is a great value. The place and the customers tend to be a little rough around the edges, but that's why people like to go there. "Real food for real people" is the motto.
I'll have to go back to try the bar experience soon. The dinner specials look intriguing. And CHEAP.
DINNER UPDATE
Since the breakfast review, I've had dinner at the Anchor four times. It's become a favorite of my son and daughter-in-law when they visit.
My first venture was the double steamed lobsters for $18.99, and they were the sweetest winter lobsters I've ever eaten (I've eaten many). The baked potato and salad ($1 more) were fine.
The sirloin steak (for $12.99) was perfectly cooked, tender, and juicy. The green beans and beets that I ordered with it were canned, but I'm not complaining.
The lamb chops turned out to those Australian shoulder chops, and they were kind of muttony. Not recommended.
However, the lightly fried haddock (for $7.99!) was succulent, and the homemade cole slaw was a great side with it.
The customers and waitstaff are friendly and chatty. The Anchor doesn't try to be a classy place. It is what it is--great food cheap.
Last Friday I won their Friday night Lobster Giveaway a beauty. I picked up an 11 lb. Lobster Saturday morning and ate for 3 days!
The Anchor for anyone who loves fresh "Lobsta" loud crowds and cold beer can't be beat. Located at the base of the Beverly/Salem Bridge on the Beverly Cabot Street side. The owners has her own boat and goes out daily. Once a week I stop in for a lunch of two lobster at a cost of only $24.95. My second favorite is the baked haddock awesome meal for only 6.95; yeah you heard me right, this local North Shore favorite is famous for fresh food, lots of space and beer drinking from sun-up to almost sun-up. A true fisherman's atmosphere so if ya like Pub's, food and great drink prices check em' out. You cannot beat the prices.
