Food takes a while, but is incredibly fresh. The avocado spring rolls are killer and the sauce they're served with is perfect. I didn't know this existed, but am glad I tried out something new. I'll have to come back when I'm really hungry and try the paella (they have beef, seafood AND vegetarian options for this and many other menu items.)
Review Source:This is one of the best restaurants in Ames -- tastewise. Â If you care about how your restaurant looks or you want an upscale, romantic dinner, this isn't your place. Â But if you want the best tasting food. Â This place is great. Â Angie's Catina started serving lunch and dinner about a month ago (in April 2010), and they specialize in authentic Mexican food and Asian. Â We're not talking about fake authentic Mexican food like the other Mexican restaurants in town (Mr Burrito being an exception) -- we are talking real, authentic Mexican food like the ones you can get in Des Moines (e.g., El Rey, La Preferida) or at the annual Latina Heritage festival! Â If you know your true Mexican food, you'll know this place is for real with just one look at the menu. Â They have tacos -- without cheese; they have Elotes, which I had been able to find ONLY during the Latino Heritage festival!! Â And the Elote here is better -- it was grilled on fire to perfection. Â Don't worry about the one-star review, which was published BEFORE the new owner took over.
Review Source:I gravitated to the recently renamed Angie's Cantina because I had read a news article stating that they featured Spanish cuisine. Â When we arrived at the establishment, I was greeted by a sign that said "Angie's Cantina Breakfast & Spanish Cuisine."
I came here hungering for the likes of paella, jamon iberica and gazpacho. Â What I discovered was another Mexican restaurant. Â This is however is a misnomer and not Spanish cuisine.
What it is is a solid purveyor of tacos, tortas and the popular Mexican street food elotes along with the handy breakfast: anytime. Â I found the torta I ordered to be on a high quality bread and served with delicious side of freshly prepared salsa with exceptional light and crisp corn chips. Â
Pros: A good lunch stop for a sandwich with an authentic ethic twist. Â Â
Cons: Don't come looking for anything from the Iberian Peninsula.
When it comes to breakfast, no one does it like Angie's. Â They have, indubitably, some of the best breakfast food in Ames. Â They are great for any late-night cravings one might have for breakfast, since they open at 11pm on Thursday-Saturday. Â Of all the things offered, I personally have to say I like the omelets best, but in reality, everything is good, from the Waffles to the French Toast. Â On top of that, they're cheap, rarely having to pay more than $5. Â They have a small nook in the corner with is great for groups of friends, but is also a good place to take family when visiting. Â The service is great, and the employees are really friendly, and actually get to know people. Â All in all, one of the best places I know to eat, period.
Edit: Lately, service has been deteriorating. I guess it's due to the new management.
