I was in Canton antiquing, not on their famous First Monday, but on a less crowded Saturday. Â That makes a gal hungry I'm telling ya!
Thought I'd find a small diner type restaurant, with good East Tx cooking--BBQ, diner style, whatever. Â The name and the look of the building told me it was on the western diner/BBQ end of the spectrum. Â Some sort of stuffed animal with horns in one of the windows. Â Newer building, great parking, seemed to have several folks eating there (it was about 3pm) so that meant something to me. Â
Walk in, greeted quickly by hostess, sweet East Tx accent. Immediately noticed decor had a mexican flair. Â Top of menu "Athens Mexican Cafe"... hmmmm maybe I was so hungry I just didn't notice "mexican" on the sign?? Â No worries, i'm a huge tex-mex fan, I'll be just fine. Â Menu did have a few items that were in the hamburger category, but when it's 90% mexican food, you don't order hamburgers.
Recently, I've been on a search for the best tortilla soup.  Started with that  ($4 how big could it be?).  Just to make sure I wouldn't go hungry, I ordered some chicken nachos ($8).  WOW.  Lotsa soup.  Rice, pico, avocado on the side.  Nachos even bigger.  Pile of nacho chips with fajita chicken meat, cheese, lettuce, sour cream, pico, guac... the works.  This was a lot of food!  Fully belly of Tex-Mex and two glasses of sweet tea later, I was on my way.  Two people could've enjoyed all of this food.  Servings are quite large.
Oh, and btw... the exterior sign did NOT say Mexican on it. Â Thought that was funny. Â Maybe they'll get a round to adding it.
