I returned to Atz's for the first time since my childhood on a recent trip to Ft. Wayne.  It was everything I remembered.  My wife and I and our 2 kids had a great diner lunch and ice cream for under $33.
My wife had a fish sandwich special that was outstanding and the kids loved theirs. The ice cream was a clear star.  Also, I recommend a vanilla coke to drink #protip.
The staff is attentive and friendly.  The place needs some renovation; it looks like they've removed a lot of dividers and just painted over where the joints were.

Rude staff, gritty ice cream, flavorless cones and a falling about building doesn't make for a good ice cream visit.

I was going to give them a break for being short staffed but then I saw a waitress snap at a customer who decided to quit waiting and got her own water. Then one of the staff members told me I couldn't sit at the counter if I was going to order up front. I'm still not sure what that means but it occurred while my family was checking out the ice cream case to see what flavors they had. I guess we were violating some rule. I told the guy to get away from me.

The chocolate almond I choose was gritty and somehow the almonds tasted stale. My daughter's cherry ice cream had an unnatural look to it. My 10 year old abandoned her shake with an 'eh'.

I love waffle cones and after eating most of the ice cream I started in on the cone which had the flavor and texture of...not quite card board.

Oh, and there wasn't a surface that wasn't dinged. Just a sad looking place with average ice cream and surly people. Why'd I pay for that?

Really more of a 1.5 star, but I'll round up because their prices are very cheap. Atz's appears to make their own ice cream, which is a dying trade, but it was a little gritty and icy. They do not make their own waffle cones, though, which was disappointing. We just came for cones, though it looks like there is a diner inside. Not a very nice area to sit and eat an ice cream cone, unless you like looking at parking lots. Next time I'll probably just stop at Kroger for prefab cones and a carton of ice cream instead of coming here.
