The hubby and I went to Banter on a Saturday night for a relaxing night of live music...we weren't disappointed! Â We heard an eclectic mix ranging from classical bass with piano accompaniment, a newbie but talented singer, and more experienced very expressive singer, and then a cool upbeat band with an awesome sound. Â We were there almost 4 hours, but it was a fast 4 hours! Â We really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere....artwork on the walls, hipster crowd, and friendly baristas. Â We enjoyed wine and beer, along with paninis. Â Even though we don't live close, we will be back!
Review Source:For someone who doesn't live in Denton (my brother does) I sure have been to a good amount of the eating establishments in the downtown area. Â Banter is first and foremost a bar, but they make some really good and interesting sandwiches. Â Or at least the one I had was good and interesting.
I wanted to get a sandwich to take with me on the airplane home. Â My brother had heard good things about this place but had never been. Â This was as good a reason as any to make the drive over.
We were just there to get sandwiches and get out. Â It was early afternoon and there were a few people inside on their computers with their cups of coffee and such. Â We sidled up (that's what you do in TX) to the bar after looking at the menu that was posted on the outside of the place.
I ordered the Gobbler ($7.99). Â Whole Wheat Bread dressed with homemade Cran-Raspberry Jalapeno Cream Cheese, stuffed with melted Swiss, Smoked Turkey Breast, Red Onion, Avocado and Spring Mix. Â These sandwiches aren't huge, but they certainly aren't small either. Â The woman behind the bar who made the sandwich brought it out in a container that I knew wasn't going to work for the trip I had ahead. Â I asked if she had any tin foil and she happily removed the sandwich from the container, wrapped it in tinfoil as well as a plastic zip lock bag. Â It was very nice of her to do that.
I ate the sandwich a few hours later and it still tasted very fresh. Â I'm not really a cream cheese fan, but the raspberry jalapeno part caught my attention. Â It wasn't caked on the sandwich and that was a good thing for me. Â
Would like to see how this place is as a bar. Â Might have to check it out the next time I visit my brother.
I've heard of Banter living in Denton, usually related to sandwiches. Some people swear by Banter, some by Weinberger's as the best sandwiches in Denton. I will admit to being in the Weinberger's camp. Heck with over 100 to choose from.... well, another story for another time.
This is Banter's time. Banter is an art house type bar that you could replant in Soho in New York City. Art, illustrations and music related photos a strewn about all over. Couches, chairs and tables and neon beer signs about. Just add some laid back music and you've got a winner. I was here just to get a sandwich to go. So as for the live music aspect of this place, I can't say..... maybe another time.
As for the food? I had the sublime melt. It's a pretty good sandwich. Cheddar, Swiss, and Provolone Cheese melted on Smoked Turkey, topped with Red Onion, Spring Mix and Dijon Mustard on Ciabatta (Borrowed from their website). There were plenty of options including wraps and veggie items.
It was a good sandwich. It wasn't out of this world, or make me want to go back there tomorrow, but I will venture in there to hear some music and enjoy a beverage.
Banter had a really cute atmosphere. It's half bar half cafe and they have such a variety of food. Everything is hand made right there when you want it so it takes a little longer.
The cashier I had was so nice, and was very accommodating to my indecisiveness. I ended up getting the pita chips and hummus as an appetizer, and the Raybecca sandwich with a side of couscous! WHAT OTHER RESTAURANT GIVES YOU COUSCOUS AS A SIDE?! It was great. I really want to try everything on the menu :)
good hummus and baba ghanoush, nice selections of soda and beer (tap and bottle), and they make excellent coffee.
my one complaint that doesnt stop me from coming back, as someone who doesnt really know anything about sound, is that they could have more cloth on the walls to soften the noise level when bands play. of course ill still keep going back.
Banter is an incubator of the Denton community. Â I moved here about a year ago and I have met many of my friends through meetings at Banter. Â As I continued to hang out here, I observed more and more groups having gatherings here and I realized that no matter what path/hobby I tried to establish here, my path would have taken me through Banter. Â If I desired a whole new life, I'd just have to wait around here for several days and join whatever group I wanted to be. Â Sometimes Noisy Group A clashes with Quiet Group B, but that's life.
Five stars without selling a single thing. Â Of stuff to actually consume, their beer selection is above average,if slightly pricey, and rotates regularly. Â Frito pie is amazing although I wished for more of their pizza (cracker thin 'flatbread', you and II Charlies -- is this some weird Denton thing?). Â Can't wait to see what I may run into next at Banter.
Banter is wonderful! Their food is delicious even if it is pricey. They have good options for vegetarians and a wide variety of snacks to much while sipping a brew. Sometimes the live music can be irritatingly loud but they do have a more secluded section in the back to hide out in. I would recommend Banter for lunch or someplace to start off a stroll around the Square.
Review Source:Why don't I live in Denton? The rent is cheap, there is a great university with what seems to be an eclectic artist community, it's got that college town feel, and there are cool hangout spots, like Banter.
The fella and I went to Banter on a Tuesday night to check out the live music. On that night, there is beautiful parisian jazz, and there's no cover! We ordered some snacks and wine, found a cozy table, and relaxed for an hour. There's wine, beer, coffee, small plates, flat bread pizza, and a small dessert selection. There are also books and board games to stay amused when the band is gone. The prices were very reasonable: $6 for a glass of wine, $6 for flat bread pizza, and $4 for other small plates, like hummus and soup. Also, this place is veggie and vegan friendly. What more could you ask for?
This place recently changed owners and even though I liked it before, it is pretty amazing now. So veggie and vegan friendly!
Many beers on tap or in the bottle plus wine and coffee. If I had to be a little picky, I would suggest they expand their desserts a little. I think they only offer cheesecake (I really dislike cheesecake) and brownies. :(
When my husband and I fist moved here, it took a few weeks to get the Internet hooked up. Luckily, there is a place like Banter! We went here multiple times in the first week to get our coffee buzz on, get fed with real food like veggie sandwiches, or salads, and soak up some of the local laid-back culture. This is a real pub, in the sense that one can just stay all day. Come for lunch, stay for dinner, and then stay for a show! Don't forget to take care of the lovely servers.
Review Source:Banter is pretty awesome! They have $3.50 bottomless coffee, which is great for college students. There are a ton of tables, couches and chairs for study groups and a reasonable deli to order food!
They had an open mic night when I was there, kinda killed the studying mood, but if I had known it was on that night, I would have made other plans.
Neat little place.
Great atmosphere. Warmly lit and very quiet when there's no live music. Posters line walls and windows, comfy couches to sit on inside, patio table outside. This place serves the best macchiatto I've ever had the pleasure of sucking down in less than 2 minutes. I just couldn't help myself, it was INCREDIBLE! Service is great and fast. The food seemed a bit pricey, but it sure filled the place with a great aroma so I'd guess it's worth it.
Review Source:Ok, so this place has some charm. It has couches, and a dimly lit atmostphere, outside tables, blah blah blah, all the makings of a good college town coffee house. And a small but admirable selection of seasonal beers. But we'll get to that later.
They have a really decent menu. Quite a few vegetarian/vegan selections, all of which are freshly prepared and seemingly pretty good.
Here's my problem. And maybe it's my fault for ordering beer at a coffee house. I know that as a rule, coffee is generally served piping hot unless requested otherwise. Beer, in America, is served cold, unless requested otherwise. The beer here was... tepid. It wasn't cold. It was cool, but not cold. And for me, this completely fucks up the beer experience. The pint prices aren't exactly a bargain, especially when there are so many other less expensive places to drink in Denton, including ones that serve sub-freezing beer (Abbey Inn), so there's little room for a place that serves beer that isn't cold. And maybe it was the particular day I went. Maybe it was a new keg. But, my fiance had a completely different beer, which was also the same coolish temperature. No good, Banter, no good.
But if you stick to coffee and food, you'll probably enjoy it here. It's pretty close to the other coffee places in Denton, without any real differentiators, so I suppose it boils down to personal taste.
when i was commuting to denton i literally spent every m-w-f at banter inbetween classes. its a really laid back atmosphere. There is really cool art on the walls and the people who work there are always really nice. I agree with a previous reviewer that i dont understand why it's not more popular. There is beer, good local coffee, and delicious foods. Their spicy 2 bean vegan chili is the bomb! They even have live music at night.
Review Source:I had heard people talk about this place and when we strolled past it today I realized OH it's where the Brick Haus used to be. Â I will fully admit that I find coffee shops in college towns annoying -so many fliers and a general air of pretension- which is why I generally stay away. Â But I do think the idea of a coffee shop/bar hybrid is a great business model! And the gals working there were sweet, the ice coffee totally palatable, and the bathroom clean (I literally just went int there for a to-go coffee and to pee.)
The bathroom had some of the least offensive graffiti I've ever seen e. g. "You are beautiful" and "My boyfriend is an excellent lover." Â BUT there was drama on the "drinking alcohol while pregnant can harm the baby" warning sign on the wall -someone had written in "potential!!!!" before baby (women's studies minor!), then someone scratched it all out and wrote in "fetus" (women studies major!) Â Then someone wrote in "so can abortion" after "can cause harm to the baby" then someone was like "EVERYONE HAS OPINIONS YOU AREN'T SPECIAL." Â I found it really amusing -and very fitting for a coffee shop in a college town.
Oh Banter how I love you, but alas it seems my husband does not. Â I used to always go here when I was getting my masters. It is a nice, chill, comfortable place to study, have coffee and some yummy sandwiches. Â The portobello pit wrap is wrapped in a doughy pita and served with spinach and feta. The iced green tea is fresh and delicious and I have had some of there salads and tapas too, which have all been delicios. Â You can crash on a comfy couch for ever and read or study, also they have live music on thursdays and weekends. Â Ready for the reason my husband does not like it? Â He says they portions are for little granola people (they have good vegetarian options). Â So if you are a big 6 foot man with an appetite for meat I guess it is not for you, but this little granola person says YUM!
Review Source:I've always loved Banter-ever since going to the Thursday night open mics my freshman year, and stopping by for some internet/studying and drink/snack.
I've always loved their hummus-served the right way with a bit of oil. The past few times I've been there I've had their Chai and although it's Tazo I believe, it's the powder form which makes it so much better. I can't believe I haven't tried the coffee/espresso, *slaps wrist*. Next time I suppose.
I think it's one of my more favorite coffee shops off the square, and you should check it out.
The banter is located almost across from the Hydrant and entirely too close to Jupiter House as well. Why the Banter isn't more popular is a mystery that cannot be fathomed. Maybe because it's more of a branch of the square. This place has definitely improved since it's original materialization of Brick Haus (I've been in Denton for too long).
There are two large skylight windows that provides natural light and you get choices of beer and wine and food. The food is expensive, but it's pretty good and mostly healthy. If you're there to study, there are places to plug your compooter in, so that's no problem. Btw, there are specials everyday for beer, so if you don't want a coffee, ya know...
They also have music at night, which is probably why it's more popular at night, but the day time is just as good! The staff are pretty cool and they bring you your food. Also the girl with dreadlocks is totally cute. Maybe the guys are too? I can't tell. On a scale of 1 to James, i suppose they may be.
And honestly, I'm glad that the business isn't nearly as busy during the day time since I like it to be kinda quiet, but for the sake of The Banter, go buy a beer for yourself and support this place. If not, I'll buy you a beer.
Btw, does anyone know what that dripping chain is supposed to mean? Maybe our bound existence is everflowing? Deep, James. Deep.
I'm sitting at Banter right now. Â It is a Friday night, and I can have a nice conversation with my girlfriend sitting across from me. Â Earlier a band was playing. Â They labeled them selves as "indie-folk". They were good. I've also seen other folk/country bands here, plus other genres. Â They don't discriminate.
This seems to always be my experience with Banter. Â It's usually quiet with a few different people sitting around studying or surfing the web, others sitting at the bar chatting, a group playing a game at the couches in the back, and sometimes there is an individual playing or a small band playing in the corner. Â it is never hectic, and the people are always nice.
They are a little pricey on their beer, but they have a great selection along with coffees, sandwiches, and Tapas if you plan with them in advance. Â I'm willing to pay the extra price for such a chill atmosphere anytime of the week.
I have never had a bad experience with Banter, and look forward to being there every time I go. Â 5 stars. Good job Banter.
I work very strange hours and often have 2-4 hour gaps in my day. Â When I'm working in Denton I like to come to Banter. Â They have free wifi, coffee, food, and isn't as crowded as Jupiter House (just a short walk away). Â When I lived in Denton this was also a nice place to hangout. Â They serve beer and wine and have beer specials on each day of the week. Â Also... Â they have a scrabble board!
