Freshly made fried chicken, homemade fries covered in gravy, homemade corn fritters and homemade pie (coconut cream pie!) how can you NOT like eating here!??!!
Came to Westminster to take the kids to the pumpkin patch and then came here, the lunch was great not too big, delicious and homey. Â Not to mention, they have a market right outside! Â Fresh squash, tomatoes and much more. Â The pumpkin patch is three miles past this place, go there first and then come here for a great meal. This is what a perfect fall weekend is all about!
Baugher's is a local favorite because the food is good and the prices are always great. Â Having been here many times, I have never had what I would consider a bad meal and would recommend trying it at least once.
Leave your preconceptions and snootiness at the door and just enjoy some truly local fare.
I was so disappointed in Baugher's Country Restaurant after being wowed by their PYO Orchard! I would have been ok with country decor, but this place was just dirty and uncared for. Plus, the air conditioning was nonexistent on a hot day, after we came to cool off after apple picking and enjoy some country cooking.
When we got there, the lack of organization was a direct 180 from the orchard. The lady seating people had no list and seemingly no idea of what tables were available. Their ability to manage large groups of people was lacking, to say the least.
I had the roast beef, which was ok, but all I got was a small amount of roast beef on thick white bread (not what I asked for) with a huge side of brown gravy. And there was nothing country nor healthy on the children's menu.
Honestly, growing up in the Midwest, I was so excited to try this place. I even convinced our friends to try it with us. When we got there, I was so embarrassed that all I could do was avoid saying anything.
To the owners of Baugher's, you really need to up your game. Country cooking does not need to mean ugly and unclean restaurant, disorganized management or poor food preparation. Please consider this a challenge to do better.
Baugher's is the real deal!
Folks that have read my reviews know that aside from being in search of the perfect pizza, I love food trucks, top of the line restaurants and everything in between. Â As with Anthony Bourdain, it is about the feel, how food is prepared, etc.
Baugher's is not a top of the line restaurant; Â it is a local "mom and pop" restaurant and county store, in the same location for over 65 years. Â When you walk in, it is like walking back in time - which is a good thing.
The restaurant was filled regulars, most of which seemed to know each other visiting while eating.
We had the hot turkey sandwich was mashed potatoes and the hot roast beef sandwich with fries. Â Probably noticing I was "not from around these parts" (shades of "Silverado") I was asked if I wanted gravy on my fries (it's a Baltimore thing). Â Being from Baltimore - of course I do.
Both were excellent; Â hot, great bread, nicely sliced roast beef and turkey.
As good as our meal was, when the table a couple over from ours got theirs of fried chicken..."I wish I had fried chicken" - smelled fantastic.
We ended up getting desert, some of their homemade ice cream - woo hoo!
If you are looking for shiny glitz of the mega-restaurant type places Baugher's is not for you. Â If you are willing to step beyond that and "eat local" - Baugher's is worth the try and how!
Oh my goodness, you can get just about anything you want to eat for about 5.99...complaining about this is like going to McDonalds and being peculiar because they put too much mustard on your Big Mac...take what you can get...Everything I have ever eaten here has been fine, especially when taking into consideration the cheap price.
Review Source:The waitress was very nice and bless her heart she tried. But there is not a lot you can do with just bad food. My friend and I went for a trip down memory lane and I remember Baughers from my youth. The Steak she got had no taste and not cooked Medium Rare like she asked. More like well done. The Fried chicken I got was cooked in old burnt grease and over cooked. Mashed Taters were instant. Cole slaw was good however. Rolls were old and stale. The Peanut Butter Fluff Sundae was actually good. I would suggest going just for pie and ice cream.
Review Source:We ordered the reuben sandwich w/ fries and gravy on the side. Kids Meals: Pizza and mac and cheese, Chicken Fingers w/ fries, and cheese burger w/ fries.
All the food was basic-good. Exactly what I expect from a family restaurant like this.
What was GREAT was the homemade sweet apple cider. I am a big fan now :)
The booths were small but hey, we're a big family now so maybe a lot of places are going to feel small now. :)
I hear they have amazing homemade ice cream. We'll have to try that later. Our waitress was a bit clueless but really fun. I liked her & she definitely was attentive.
The restaurant seems to not really have anything to do with the farm. When I called ahead to get info about the farm you would have thought i called Giant asking about Sam's Club. And then when i asked the waitress about how to get to the farm and the tractor pull, she was like oh i'm not too sure where it is; i haven't been there in years.
hmmmm.
Overall the experience here was nice. As an African American, we got a lot of stares, but that was mainly from the patrons. We had good service.
My wife and I were rather unpleasantly surprised by this place, especially since it had been recommended to us by several locals.
Yeah, it's cheap, but you get what you pay for.
You would think that a restaurant owned by the same family who owns a huge farm stand and PYO fruit operation just a few miles up the road would use some of the fruits and veggies they grow on their farm in their food, right? Â Wrong. Â Most of the veggies we got were clearly canned. Â I ordered pork chops and they were quite dried out. Â My wife is vegetarian and told me that a lot of the stuff she ordered tasted like it had been cooked in or with meat (fine if you're an omnivore like me but not good for a vegetarian). Â The service was not great either.
The moral of the story? Â Skip the restaurant, drive up 140 to their farm stand/orchard, pick your own fruits and veggies, and make your own dinner with them at home.
Before I went here, I thought some of the reviews were so bad they were bordering on offensive. Unfortunately, they were kind of right. I'm not above eating at lower class food establishments, but, the caveat there is that they must serve decent, and at the very least, edible food. And, the place needs to be clean.
My fiance and I came here a while ago, and I'm pretty sure he still hasn't forgiven me for making him eat here. It looked like it had seen way better days. I got a stack of blueberry pancakes, and the waitress brought out two, said the third was still cooking, and my first two were cold and the third that was still cooking was also cold. My fiance got the bbq beef sandwich, which was ground meat swimming in bbq sauce on white bread. The corn fritters and apple fritters (more nugget-like that fritter-like) were the saving grace. The bathroom was also surprisingly clean. The price was super cheap, definitely less than $20 for the above food plus drinks, but, I would rather spend $20 at a fast food restaurant than here.
I've been eating here practically since birth. The service is always fantastic and friendly. The food is delicious and the portions are great for the price. If you're looking for gourmet, Baugher's is not your place. It brings true Carroll County charm and home-cooked food to you at an affordable price. Also check out the market next door for the best baked goods, produce, home goods, and more. Baugher's will forever hold a place in my heart!
Review Source:This spot is the epitome of a country local restaurant. Â At least it seemed that way to a visitor such as myself. Â The servers were very knowledgeable about all the dishes and everything on the menu is just good old country food. Â I had the turkey sandwich with gravy.... wow... it was incredible. Â Of course I probably gained five pounds from the amount of gravy that was slathered all over my plate, but that's irrelevant to how good it was.
Oh, and the warm apple cider.... delicious. Â It was a perfect fall meal on a perfect fall day! Â Also.... the prices are delightfully low.
Pretty descent club sandwich: nice thick bacon and turkey. But it was only a club sandwich. Hard to judge a restaurant from that. Vegetable soup was OK but nothing special. The french fries were the disaster. They were homemade but limp with grease. The desserts looked good and I sampled a sundae that was fine. Folks seem to swear by it; there was a big -though fast moving line - on an October Sunday afternoon.
Review Source:I was debating between a 3 and 4 for awhile because I was utterly SO happy eating here. The service was super friendly and very attentive, and they are SO generous here  (giving us pitchers of apple cider, lots of fresh rolls, and separating our checks for us, etc).
The food was good (but not amazingly good) but I love the feel of this restaurant! Â It's a place to get good, home style meals at a cheap price. Â Their rolls are TO DIE FOR- AMAZING!!! Â Especially if they're served hot out of the oven, they literally melt in your mouth, with a slab of salted butter- crazy good. Â So soft and delicious!!!
Their fried chicken was good- fried to order- crispy skin and juicy meat. Â I got their 4 piece entree served with 2 sides- their corn fritters were DELISH, kernels of corn in a cream sauce, fried crispy in a thin batter. Â Their mac and cheese was just OK- kind of lumped together in a thick, Velveeta-like sauce. Â One of my friends thought the friend chicken was a bit bland, but I thought it was good.
Apple crumble for dessert a la mode- delish!!! Â Baked-down apples topped with a sugary crunchy crust. Â Their other pies (apple, pumpkin) were good, but their pecan pie wasn't as good as I thought it would be.
Check this place out if you're in the area, especially if you want a cheap, home-style meal, after picking fruit at Baugher's Orchards!!!
You simply cannot have a slice of pie anywhere else that will even compare. Baugher's pis and ice creams are homemade. The crust is delicate and flaky. The filling tastes like it was picked fresh and baked. Get it a la mode. Their ice cream is decadent and creamy. You will be in pie heaven. There are pies that are generally in standard supply however, there are specials as well
Review Source:Okay, fellow Yelpers. I'll meet you in the middle on this one. Baugher's is not a gourmet establishment, but neither is it a dive. It's an experience full of local color, and what you get out of it may depend on your attitude going in.
Fivers, sorry, but the only spectacular part of the menu is the fruit desserts. Berry pie, pumpkin ice cream, apple fritters: all excellent. The fact is, when the restaurant is also a pick-your-own farm, the quality is bound to be high. And it is! My husband dreams about their black raspberry sundaes.
One-ers, come on, the food isn't terrible. Their fried chicken is made to order and wonderfully crispy, though it could stand a little more spice. Breakfasts are also great: corned beef hash, omelets and biscuits are stick-to-your-ribs comfort food. Yes, I would stay away from the vegetables. It's a diner.
Prices are great: last time we went, four of us split two four-piece chicken dinners and got a scoop of ice cream for dessert, for a total tab of less than $30.
Atmosphere is decidedly dineresque, but I won't tolerate any snide remarks about the staff. They've always been friendly, courteous and cheerful, even when confronted by wailing children and doddering elders who ask for everything to be repeated three times. Know the place before you go (this is what Yelp is for, remember?!) and you won't be disappointed.
Bonus: the fresh farmer's market adjacent to the restaurant has lots of great finds, from canning supplies to Christmas trees in season. We almost always end up with a pot of flowers or a bag of fruit to take home!
Had lunch with my husband and two children. Â My hamburger seemed a bit overdone. Â The kids had pb&js which were fine. Â They had fruit cups that did not seem as fresh as we have had at other restaurants. Â I liked the gravy and fries. Â The ice creams were yummy. Â The price was just okay like the food. Â The service/server was very slow and lacked personality. Â I will not be making a trip back.
Review Source:We took our 2 young boys to the Baugher farm and stopped by the restaurant on the way back. Â It was very family friendly. Â I had the open roast beef sandwich and was blown away. Â The hand cut fries were amazing.
The dessert list was tempting. Â We all had homemade ice cream after.
A wonderful experience.
What they serve here is a far cry from food. The only people who would appreciate this "menu" are those 60 and older, because it will likely remind them of the "good ol fifties" when "food" was not fresh or flavored, but processed, out of a can or fried and bland.
Just look at these photos - Everything is smothered in a white sauce. Blah.
Funny thing about Baugher's is that when I lived here before I never ate there...just wasn't on my radar I guess. I thought of it as "that old place full of old people." Now that I'm older, I'm starting to appreciate being able to get a home-cooked meal that I don't have to cook at a very reasonable price and friendly service to boot. It's not upscale by any means, but it's not trying to be...it's a local hangout and for the money, you can get a satisfying meal. Tonight I had the baked chicken dinner, with mashed potatoes and lima beans and it was pretty darn tasty...the chicken was really tender (I didn't expect that for some reason)...so yeah, I'm kinda a fan.
Review Source:Baugher's is established in Westminster and a good stop to pick apples. After a long time, we found ourselves In the area again last night. Thought we would give the restaurant a try.
When we arrived at 7pm we noticed the parking lot was packed, always a good sign. But in this case it was more about the locals on a Friday night than about the food. I asked about the house speciality. Fried chicken I was told, I added apple fritters to the plate. The apple fritters were pleasant but the chicken however moist, had no flavor and you just wanted to get up and go to the  kitchen to tell them to clean the fryer.
However the ribeye though tasteless was tender, the sides, applesauce, potato salad and mashed potatoes were average and what you would expect from a diner. All in all, you have plenty of choices on the menu, sides come with everything, good price but average diner food.
(06/16/2010) Had lunch out in Carroll County after a work meeting. Go for the atmosphere (divey, if you like that kind of thing), food's a little bland. Nice family diner, the "famous" fried chicken needed seasoning, but was hot, juicy and crunchy. Oh, and as I learned that day, it's "Bog-gers" not "Bow-ers".
Review Source:This Westminster staple is a nice stop while checking out the farm store or heading off to pick your own pumpkins or apples. If you are in the mood for homestyle cooking, this is the place to stop. Prices are inexpensive - I had to look at the prices twice to make sure I wasn't hallucinating after our 3.5 hour hike.
Even at 3 PM, the place was packed. Fresh pressed cider was sweet and farm fresh. We ordered the hot turkey sandwich with fries and gravy. The. sandwich was perfect, but the fries were pale and tasteless. I consider myself a fried chicken fan and the 2 piece chicken meal lacked seasoning plus the meat was dry eventhough it was too brown and overcooked. I was sad about the chicken, but I really thought they are right on with the cole slaw and potato salad. The pie list was impressive. They served a huge slice of chocolate cream pie - smooth, chocolatey and captured in a nice flaky crust. I'd come back for homestyle pies.
I had lunch there today, and I usually eat there about once a month. I live in Norfolk but travel to Gettysburg once a month, and I stop there on my way home. I have been going to Baugher's since I was a kid and my grandparents took me.
I love this place. I'm not sure I would use the word "dive" as a descriptor, though. It's a country restaurant, and it's not fancy. However, the staff is extremely friendly, the food is good, and the prices are low. No, the food is not complex nor elegantly presented, but that's not their style. I have never had any problems with the cleanliness of the place.
They have a rotating list of vegetable sides, most of which are not fresh and many of which are not usually available at typical chain restaurants.
They have a separate dessert menu and a large selection of pies, which is what you'd expect from a place like this.
The farm market next door to the restaurant offers a seasonal selection of fruits and vegetables. For some reason, prices there vary from inexpensive to overpriced. Some of the fruit is obtained from outside sources, but Baugher's operates its own orchards, so much of the fruit is fresh from there. As with most stores, you can find bargains - or you can needlessly overspend.
The place is great for families (they have an ice cream counter at the front), and there are a lot of regulars. The clientele is a mix of locals (farmers, DC workers, retired folks, etc.) and tourists. Regardless, I have always had a pleasant, welcoming experience at Baugher's.
When I see 5-star reviews for a place barely deserving two, it leaves me suspicious.
I wish it were enough to say that Baugher's was awful, but it's not. Consider this out-of-towner's advice. My visit was at high-noon on Sunday.
First of many red flags: a line 20-deep waiting outside (good sign??), but consisted of the most unhealthy people I've ever seen (bad sign).
Second red flag: dead flowers for sale outside. By the time I finished inside, didn't even want to explore the outside market.
Third red flag: the 5-star raters claim friendly service, but everyone I saw seemed to hate working there, to dislike every new customer arriving, and appeared as unhealthy as their regular patrons.
Eating buddy had the tuna melt, which we then decided was better described as a "Mayo Sandwich." Â Flecks of tuna floating in a jar of mayonnaise. She took one lick and refused to eat it (after running a 13-mile race and was famished). Â I had a turkey burger on a nondescript generic bun. McDonald's, a place I haven't eaten at in over a decade, has higher quality fare. Quick interjection: Baugher's does have good prices, on par with McDonald's and other substandard eateries.
In an attempt to wash away the experience, my eating buddy had "home made" vanilla ice cream; it was tasteless. I had mint chocolate chip, but threw out the artificial, essential-oil tasting ice cream and just ate the cone.
It's a sad state of affairs when Americans in a small town rate the quality of this restaurant as among their best. Reminds you of your grandma's kitchen? My grandma would have been ashamed. Baugher's tries to do so much that everything is done poorly. One look from the roadside and you can see how hard they try to be everything for everyone, but instead result in a dismal product. Garbage.
This is one of the worst restaurants I've ever been to. Â Oh man it was so bad; everything about it was bad.
My friend and I came to the beautiful countryside of Westminster to run a half-marathon. Â We were in love with the gorgeous farmland and did a yelp-search to find an open air market place to eat after our race. Â Holy crap did we scrape the bottom of the barrel.
It doesn't at all matter that this place was a little "divey," I don't really care how upscale a place looks, especially in the country. Â I grew up in the country. Â I know country. Â So when I say this place was "run down and dirty," I mean it in a way that should have been WARNING. Â The "market" had a rather large section for flowers and plants, and they were all brown, withered, and dying.
Once we got in and sat down, I noticed a dirty film on everything. Â It had to be grease from years and years of frying. Â We were mostly interested in breakfast, but they were only serving a partial breakfast menu, and I decided I would try the poached eggs, but I was so hungry from having just burned over 1400 calories, I wanted something more. Â I should know better, I really should, but this place got such good "reviews," I guess I went out on a limb.
I ordered the "Tuna Melt." Â I'm telling you, I'm down 2 and 0 for tuna melts, and this is the last time I'll ever order it where it's not specified as being a PIECE of tuna. Â This thing was disgusting. Â It was an enormous glob of mayo with some pieces of canned tuna floating in it. Â I think I saw a piece of celery in it too. Â Now, honestly, I didn't expect a slab of sashimi grade tuna, but come on! Â I have had excellent tuna salad made from the freakin can. Â This was just a slop of gag. Â This was just WRONG. Â I was not going to eat this thing. Â I gave it a chance, I gave it a lick, and it was just disgusting. Â I would not eat it. Â Forget putting that in my body! Â I had a Clif bar in the car.
They advertise home made ice cream, so we decided to try to redeem ourselves. Â I had a scoop of vanilla. Â I think you can bet everything on how good a place's vanilla is. Â Maybe I was already doomed because of the food, but the ice cream was bland and nondescript. Â It didn't even have the nice, crunchy ice-texture you usually get from homemade ice cream. Â I had a few bites and decided it wasn't worth the calories. Â I threw it away.
Look, I admit I'm somewhat of a food aficionado, I rarely eat out because I cook a LOT and I cook delicious, nutritious meals; I'm a subscriber to Cooks Illustrated. There are too many crappy restaurants out there and food is too expensive to be blowing my money on crap. So I have some high standards. Â When I do eat out, I always yelp the place I've decided on, and I expect a lot for my money. Â Or at least something EDIBLE for my money. Â This was inexcusable.
Down-home country cooking, within limits.
Baugher's appeals to the young parents with kids and gray-hair set. Â The food's marginally good, they have a pretty tasty selection of fruit pies, a cool little farmer's market, and it's a real slice of Westminster life.
The cons? Â Cramped seating, kinda dingy dining room. Â The families with kids set leaves behind a mess that doesn't get cleaned up quickly.
Not a bad place, not a great place. Â Good if you want an old-school open-face turkey sandwich with gravy and a slice of pretty good apple pie. Â The fried chicken's not bad, either, but not the ecstatic experience that some would make it out to be. Â Stay away from the green-beans-from-a-can veggie sides and stick with starches and selections from the deep fryer. Â Not health food by any stretch, but a decent enough greasy spoon.
I ate at Baugher's for lunch today.  i had the recession special.  It was a pulled pork sandwich with a cup of soup for 5.95.  Very delicious.  You get a choice of 3 soups  - I had turkey corn soup.  Like the review above  save room for dessert.  Homemade pies, ice cream  and sundaes.  Service is good and so are the prices.  We shared lemon merangue pie and a sundae with chocolate syrup, marshmallow creme and nuts.  after lunch, you can shop the store for apples, cider apple butter  etc  They even have Amish brooms that looked pretty good.
Review Source:This is one of my favorite restaurants. They have a wide variety of home-style country dishes. Since I'm the only one in my household who eats turkey, gravy, and stuffing, I go there to get my gobbler fix.
My son loves their corn fritters, and their apple fritters. And you can get Baugher's cider with your meal with unlimited free refills.
Their ice cream is pretty good, and so are their pies, so save room for dessert!
