Four stars for being one of the few places in town to still have Newcastle Brown Ale on draft.
I've been in here a few times and love the dive-ish, neighborhood bar feel the place just exudes. Beer is well priced with a nice selection of brands.
Did I mention they have Newcastle? Â You had me at hello.
The chow I've had here has been fine, but my White Whale here is the Friday fish and chips lunch special. I 've heard they are really good, and each time I've tried to get them it's been too late. I think the best fish and chips in town are at the Dog and Duck, so it's going to take a lot to change my mind.
So, four stars for Newkie and a potential fifth if the fish and chips pan out. If I can ever bag the damn things.
Yet another North Austin gem, right down the road off of Jollyville. It's not corporate or fancy, it's the kind of bar you'd see on a tv show. You know the kind, everyone knows your name, you're there all the time and you have the same table.
The beer selection here is seriously no joke. I was so overwhelmed by options! I'm also not really a beer drinker so that's probably why. I ended up getting some wine instead and I let my husband stick to the beer choices.
There is plenty of seating, inside and out. There's a pool table and darts in the backroom. Plenty of parking and really decent prices. If you're just looking for a good ol' neighborhood bar to go have a drink at, this is your place. I get the feeling it's the type of bar that the service industry loves.
This place is exactly how i thought it would be, very pub like and nothing more and nothing less. Â The bartenders are probably the best people to talk to in here, the waitresses usually never have a great conversation or talk too much. Â The guys behind the bar know their beer very well and will talk to you about anything. Â Overall to me this is a great place to stop by and have a great beer and good food.
Review Source:Charming little joint with a selection of 200+- bottled beers! The menu has some classic bar food as well as pizzas and sandwiches ect. Try the Hero Supreme.
They offer a 101 club for regulars with some sweet perks. That and the plethora of LCDs should keep you occupied.
Only one billiards table but their patio area is nice after dark.
I give BB Rovers four stars for the beer selection and 2 for the food, giving it 3 stars overall. Â I do really like this place and love the staff. Â Good watering hole hidden in a strip shopping center. Great beer selection and ok pub grub. Â Give it a shot if you're into beer and dives.
Review Source:One of my very favorite bars in North Austin. We are proud members of the 101 club.
Love the bartenders, they are good guys. They keep it casual and don't try too hard, are friendly and some of the food ain't half bad. ;) Â Always a great place to stop for a beer. They have over 300 of them from all over the world. (I wish they had Saranac but that's just because I'm from Utica, NY.)
This is a solid place to have a few beers and some bar food. It's got the dive feel, the average waitstaff, and a good beer list. The pizza is a bit thick crust-wise, but it's otherwise pretty tasty. The other bar food looked pretty good too... but don't expect too much on the food, I did say that it was BAR FOOD.
The nice thing about this place is that it's good for groups... and that can be a benefit when you're trying to make sure you all have a seat and fast. I mean really, on a Friday at 5:01pm, it's beer time! Please don't make me wait... and this place fits the bill. Would be nice if the waitstaff were a little quicker so that there was a beer in my hand at 5:01.30. They should all go to Oktoberfest and see how it's done!
Awesome beer selection! I have officially started my list to get to 100 and be on a plaque on the wall. My brother and I go here at least once a week. The staff is really cool. Angie is the best! She always helps us out with beer selections and she knows her stuff. She has never recommended something I didn't like. While there is not a huge selection on food, what they do have is good. I love the sausage burgers! They take a little longer to cook, but well worth the wait. The pizza is not bad either. We have a vegetarian in our group so I admit I may like it better if we got meat on it. The soups are really good too. Homemade and tasty.
I dig this place. I will continue to go weekly and whittle down my 100 beers.
This neighborhood bar features a huge beer selection at reasonable prices with above average food. Â
That said, the service is exceptionally slow from the apathetic waitresses past their prime. We routinely waited 10-15 minutes with empty glasses before one of three different servers would show up to check on refills. Â It was clearly not an issue with the kitchen or bartender. Â Our main waitress appeared inconvenienced by our very presence.
There were only about 20 other guests in the entire place and we rang up a $160 tab. After waiting 20 minutes just to ask for our check, we decided it was time to move on. Â I rather spend the extra money elsewhere and receive fast, friendly service.
We went to BB Rover's for the first time last weekend when we were craving burgers. Â I had the bacon mushroom cheeseburger and added a side of fries; the husband had the bacon cheeseburger and also added a side of fries. Â Note to self: only one of us needs to get fries next time.
We really enjoyed the burgers. Â They were juicy and loaded with toppings. Â I thought the bacon was a little thin and fatty and I ended up giving most of mine to my husband. Â The fries were really crisp and hot when they arrived, but by the time I finished my burger and started eating the fries, the grease within them made them soggy and gross. Â Double the sogginess for the fries on the bottom of the pile due to burger grease. Â Note to self: one side of fries in a separate basket.
TONS of beer choices, which is fun unless you don't know where to begin. Â I'm not a beer drinker, but my husband is, and after 10 minutes of reading through the list, he chose a beer that he could pick up for $1.80 at HEB. Â Maybe places like this should have a "Like this? Â Try this..." type of thing so people who know they like one beer can try a similar-but-different beer. Â Maybe I'm asking too much and it works the way it is.
We'll be back at some point, as I'd definitely like to try other things on the menu and my husband would like to try more beers.
I have some friends who for reasons that escape think this is a great place. After multiple visits separated by years, consistency is the biggest asset.
It's great as in stale smoke & beer, tables that were scavenged from your poor cousins dumpster topped off with the bad side of bar food. The service is so-so. Reasonable selection of beers is the best part but there are much better places to get tap beer.
Despite the run down feel, there's no white trash excitement going on which would be it's only saving grace.
BB Rover's is the quintessential neighborhood watering hole...that happens to quench thirst with a ridiculous beer menu. It is like going to a beer joint (see Flying Saucer or Draught House) without paying the piper. There are about 50 $4 microbrews from all over the good ol' states.
The location definitely sucks; I honestly do not know how they have stayed afloat for so long. It is set behind a dead parking lot away from the sights of the 183 access road. That being said, if you are in the area, this is definitely an awesome place to grab a drink.
I seem to really like this place, so you may ask, why the 3-star rating? Well, I do like beer... but not so much that the beer menu can overshadow the main reason I came: food. Needless to say, the food was alright... with a beer.
If an item on a menu has a unique name or something, you can bet that I will go for it. You would too if the soup of the day was named "Green Eggs (no ham)." When it came out, it was a thick pureed soup of potatoes, maybe cabbage (?), and brussel sprouts. Â It was definitely smooth, but I could have used softer mini-cabbages (sprouts... did that confuse you?), more flavor, and another layer of taste bud substance i.e. spicy, sweet.
I also went for the all meat chili, and it was actually not bad; it paired really well with my pale ale. It was spicy, and certainly meaty. I just would have preferred my meat a bit chunkier; it was really finely ground.
For my entree, I took a shot in the dark and tried their Shepard's pie. It definitely was home-cooked... but it was not cooked by a momma'. This was made hastily in batches and probably just thrown together. The mashed potatoes were fairly smooth with some chunks interspersed; they were very bland, though. The ground beef and veggie mix in the bottom was very disappointing. It was literally just dry minced beef with some peas and carrots.
BB Rover's has an amazing beer selection, but the food will merely suffice to coat your GI tract as you work your way through the many choices. It is in an inconvenient area, but it is definitely worth the trip, for a drink. Your journey will be rewarded with a holy grail... or a Holy  Grail, if you like that beer.
The good: Â Beer selection, over 100. Â Patio is nice in good weather. Â And I love the ducks on the ceiling and the sign not to feed them. Â
The bad: Â Service. Â Super slow. Â When I tell you I need a few minutes to look over the menu, that doesn't mean ten minutes. Â And don't wait until my beer is empty and thrust across the table to ask if I want another one.
The nasty: Â Texas spaghetti. Â I mean, pasta, meat sauce chili flavored, onions, cheese? Â I can dig it. Â That's what the menu offered. Â What was delivered: Â A steaming glop of manwich looking stuff that was roughly four times more than the pasta, melted cheese that gunked everything up and heap of raw white onions so large I couldn't even mix the plate up without them spilling everywhere. Â
I might go back here for a game or something, but I'm sitting at the bar and not ordering food.
You can't beat BB Rover's for beer selection, especially in North Austin. Â The food is unremarkable (but better after you've had few pints...). Â A dart board and a pool table round out the "bar atmosphere" category.
The waiter service has not been good the last few times i've gone, keeping me from adding a fourth star. Â The last time i was there, our waitress seemed downright hostile. Â Bartenders are cool though...
I'm not that impressed with BB rovers, but I do find myself craving to go there every once in a while for a Beer and some fajitas/burger. My wife, dog, and I usually sit outside, and while it's not THAT nice (it's surrounded by a parking lot), on a nice day, it can be relaxing to sit there in the breeze.
The wait staff is nice enough, they've brought out huge bowls of water and treat us pretty good. Prices are pretty average, but they have a much nicer beer selection than many other places around the area.
I hear they have live music crammed on the patio every once in a while which would add to the appeal of going there for a beer on a weekend night.
I say go here for the beer selection, but don't expect anything amazing from the rest of the stuff you can get here.
BB Rovers is awesome. I have been coming here for a VERY long time and am NEVER disappointed.
Kristin W. nailed it saying it is a lot like the TV show Cheers to which I would agree. You will often find me inside in a corner with headphones on buried in my laptop working or sitting outside with my puppy "Faux Paws McNasty".
I have discovered recently that most of the regulars and staff are disappointed when I don't show up with Mr Paws, which I think is really cute.
Thank you Rovers for kicking so much ass and being an awesome remote workplace and great place for bipeds and quadrupeds alike!
They have a pool table, dart boards and a good beer selection. I'm mostly a fan b/c of their unique location off 183 and Jollyville. The servers are nice, though sometimes a bit slow or forgetful.
The space is open and well air-conditioned. They have a nice little patio outside for you smokers.
Live music some nights, yada yada yaday, just go check it out if you are in the area and haven't already.
This place never changes. Â Have been going here regularly for about 10 years and everything on the menu is acceptable. The pizzas and burgers are best. Â The beer selection is excellent, though there are no happy hours. Â Service is ok when not too busy - and they're very friendly.
They helped create a vegan sandwich that uses the veggie pizza ingredients, sauerkraut, and mustard - it's really good and healthy. Â It's not on the menu, so you might have to explain what you want.
Avoid the bathrooms if you're a sitter, as I said, nothing changes (oh wait, they did just get a new tv!)
BB Rover, I've been here many, many times. It's right smack in the middle of work and home; half mile from my office and half mile from home. Perfect.
A co-worker/neighbor/friend and I used to come straight here after work every day and stay 'til close just drinking from their awesome selection of beer and eating their SWEET beef/sausage burger (hamburger made from both ground beef and sausage, OMG!). It's a perfect place to just chill and have some beers with your friends. It can get crowded on occasion but never gets rowdy like Little Woodrow's which is down the road some.
It definitely has that neighborhood pub feel, really down-to-earth, normal people kind of place.
Red Rover, Red Rover, let BB come over!
I've been to BB Rover's several times in the last few years because I live within walking distance of it. Â I like that I can walk over there, have a few beers, and walk back home. Â Nice and simple.
They have nearly 300 beers, but I will never try them all. Â If you try at least 100 in a year, you can get into their special club. Â I know a couple of people in it, but I honestly couldn't tell you what kinds of things you get for it. Â I think your name gets put on some plaque, and they throw a party in your honor which we light drinkers are not allowed to attend. Â I think you get some t-shirt, too, but I dunno.
I'm not a big fan of their food. Â The pizza is actually quite good, but their burgers stink. Â I'm one of the few people I know who dislikes BB's burgers.
I've had a couple of happy hour meetups there. Â Reserved the back room and everything. Â The waitresses are always really nice and helpful. Â They even allowed us to split the tab for each person. Â Apparently they won't let you do that on the patio. Â Weird, but that's what one of the waitresses told me.
I like that I can get almost any beer I want there. Â Problem is, I'm usually afraid to try a new one because what if I don't like it? Â Then I will have wasted my money.
Word to the wise: Â Don't go to their website. Â Last time I went, back in September, it had a virus on it.
And oh, it's actually hard for me to rationalize drinking there because, ultimately, I will have to get up to use the restroom. Â As others have stated, the stalls in the ladies' room lack locks. Â Say what?
The only reason I didn't give BB Rover's five stars is because they don't have a full bar. Â If I could slide in there and get a martini, they'd be a 5-star gem in my book.
Been here many times to watch football but last nite was here to celebrate a friend's birthday. Â We sat outside where there are lots of tables and people can bring their mutts. Â
On football days, we used to always get a burger and they are huge and great! Â They can also make your burger half sausage if you want to further grease your arteries. Â Since I have virtually cut burgers outta my diet (boo!), I got the lentil sausage soup (of the day) and it was downright tasty and filling. Â Something you want to avoid is chips and salsa as it appears the chips are 3 years old and the salsa is straight outta the Pace jar. Â
As mentioned many times before, they have a gargantuan beer list as well as a handful of crappy wine and some ciders. Â No Golden Monkey tho. Â They have them flying from their ceiling but none in the fridge. Â Shames! Â But I consoled myself with several Ace Pear Ciders instead. Â
Our waitstaff was good. Â Giving our birthday boy several special considerations and generally overlooking the fact that most of our party was obnoxiously inebriated. Â One thing you have to know tho, is if you go with a group, your tab will read like this:
beer                       $3.75
beer                       $3.95
beer                       $4.25
cider (that's mine!) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $3.95
beer                       $3.25
mushrooms                $5.49
chips and salsa            $2.95
beer                       $3.75
beer                       $3.95
beer                       $4.95
etc.
They do not specify on the bill the type of beer consumed so either keep a menu handy so you know how much your beers cost, or just assume they are mostly around $4 and guesstimate. Â Course after 3 hours of drinking, it's a moot point and you just throw your card in the mix and hope you don't get raped by your friends. Â OR, you have a good wife who stays reasonably sober to drive and she saves your butt and your wallet. Â I'm just sayin.....
I like BB Rover's. Â I like the employees and the clientele. Â The food is nothing special, but I only go there for the beers anyway. Â The have tons of different types of beer, so if you get bored of drinking the same old swill at all the other bars, come here and revive your love of beer.
This place feels like a neighborhood pub even though it's tucked into the back of a strip mall. Â I need to go back and enjoy some hard to find beers.
I can firmly say, Rover's is a hole in the wall... but a hole in the wall with a place in my heart. Â Having grown up in NW Austin (and right across the street for a time) and going with my Dad to this place ever since I was a kid, Rover's has been one of my go to bars. Â Fortunately, when I was able to start drinking and immediately found utility in the craft brews abroad, Rover's was always there to support my habit with if not the newest at least the most unique and ubiquitous brews of the day. Â Just two weeks ago I was able to partake in a extremely intense IPA I had never heard of via CA.
In addition to brew-ha-ha. Â If you're hankerin' for decent burger, different little pizza, Â or just new and unique pub grub, they have your number.
The staff is hit and miss for newbies, but they never forget a face... after the third or fourth time, haha. Â And the Barmen are always happy to talk beer.
There's also pool and darts for you sporting fellows and once a year they have a private party for all of those folks who have spent a piece of each weeks paycheck trying 100 different beers.
Seriously folks, "I ain't no connoisseur", but this is a locals kind of place where the atmosphere takes a back seat to the tap, or in this case... bottle. Â Bob J. got it right when he said they "usually" Â have about 70% of the menu but considering the fact that they have over two hundy on the menu, you're bound to find what you like.
BL: If you like trying numerous "hard to find in a bar" beers and don't mind drinking in a 1980s strip-mall pub with the decor to match and paying a little above market value, this is the place for you...
So I've been her twice now, and had two very different experiences. The first time I was alone, it was a non-busy time, and I was there more to eat than to hang out. The second time I was there for Open Mic (every Sunday at 8pm), with some friends, and mostly having a couple of drinks.
The first time was okay, food was okay, and it kinda' took a while to get my food. But, the reason for the only 3 star rating from me is because I got very sick after eating here (and a veggie pasta, too! how do you screw up a veggie pasta like that?!). Not fun. And I didn't go back for a while, and probably wouldn't have for much longer, if my friends hadn't been playing the Open Mic.
So the second time... A bit more crowded, though not crazy. Open Mic was great fun! A huge variety of music played. very laid back. Very chill. Great Sunday gig. Service was a bit slow, but that's because there was only one server on. And it wasn't that big a deal. It was kind of a cluster-f*** outside, with bunches of groups of people rather scattered and mixed over various tables. She was actually very helpful when it came down to it. I only got the fried veggie app thing. I got the large, and really, really shouldn't have! It was HUGE! 3 or 4 of us were munching on this thing and didn't finish it all. It was okay, just basic bar food stuff. No complaint about the food this time.
They do have a really great selection of beer, too. And several ciders for dorks like me. No liquor, unfortunately. But really, what a beer selection!! Their menu ranges all over the place, and could make most meat eaters happy.
Overall, this place is okay. I'll be back, largely because it's around the corner from my house, and I literally walk there. :}
I lived about two blocks from here, and I thank this place for helping me to sample about 200 different beers. Whenever I had a rough day I could come here and have a great beer or four; each more interesting than the next.
Another big star for the friendly knowledgable staff. Throughout my 3 years in the area the staff was always the same, and always dependable. If you needed help picking a beer they were amazing at it. Â Even more surprising is that the waitresses often knew which bottles they were out of off of the top of their head (which is a challenge when you have a menu of about 300+ different beers).
Service is always friendly and fast. Â The food is nothing to write home about, but its a good standard fare bar food. Â I enjoyed the burgers, and enjoyed the ruben. I wouldn't go here expecting a superb meal, and frankly I dont know what Robert E. was expecting (what's a full dinner anyhow?)
they have outdoor seating; deal fairly well with splitting up tabs amid large groups. Â They have a nice backroom where they often have live music.
So if you're ok with a kind of campy place, friendly regulars with some character (if you are sitting inside near the bar) and a hint of the smell of stale beer, pull up a chair and crack open the beer menu
cheers
I've heard great things was just finished re-locating myself back up to north austin and thought I would get some food and a beer.
We sat down, Our waitress never showed up and so another waitress decided she would be nice and hook us up with 2 beers, she told us she would send the waitress who's section we were in to our table so we could order food.
When our supposed waitress did finally show up, it was pretty obvious she didn't want to have anything to do with us. She was sort of in a panic too. Â We asked to order food she said I will be right back. She then came back wiped a table off and said I will be right back for the second time..
after my beer was empty and then some
we just asked another waitress to get us the hell out of there..
I do like that they have Harp on tap..
but I'm seriously debating ever going here again.
BBs has a really good beer selection, unfortunately most of it is in bottles and a bit over priced. Â
The food is good, but nothing to write home about for sure. Â Average pub grub at the best. Â
Staff is very friendly and it can be a fun place under the right conditions. Â
BB's is not a bad place, but not a great place either. Â If you're near by, stop in for a pint, but don't go out of your way for it.
I've been to B.B. Rover's twice now, and both times, I'm afraid I was underwhelmed.
The first time we went, my boyfriend wanted to watch a game, so we headed over there for some grub and drinks. I ordered one of their chicken pot pies, but it just seemed really bland -- nothing overtly BAD about it, but nothing particularly tasty, either. I figured, well, it's English food -- maybe I should try something else next time. The rest of the experience was okay, but nothing really stood out -- oh, except the fact that they don't serve any hard alcohol, and I'm not much of a beer fan. I had cider instead.
So, next time rolled around, a month or so ago. We met some friends there, and granted, it was fairly late (around 9:30/10ish). We asked the waitress if they were still serving food and she said yes, but then it took her forever to come back and get our orders (and they weren't slammed, either -- there were 2 waitresses but the place was fairly quiet). When we finally did get our food (I'd ordered a chicken sandwich this time) I was once again underwhelmed. Bland, boring, not particularly appetizing -- and mind you, we were starving since we'd somehow skipped dinner.
Maybe the waitress was having a bad day, too, because she wasn't very friendly, took her time taking our orders, and was slow on checking our table. We weren't a loud, rowdy bunch, either -- all we wanted was a few drinks and a decent meal, but I'm thinking that BB Rover's is not the place I'll go in the future if I want either. Fortunately, Austin has plenty of alternatives with better service, better food, and a friendlier atmosphere.
I live walking distance from BB Rover's, and I sometimes go there for that reason alone. Â I really, really want to like it. Â The other reviews cover the positive aspects thoroughly, so I will stick to why I give it only two stars:
* The Guinness is consistently warm and flat. Â Once every year or so I order one, hoping something has changed. Â Sadly, I'm just reminded why I stick to other beers at Rover's. Â The upshot is that there is no lack of alternatives to Guinness.
* More than once, my group has been charged for more rounds of beer than we consumed. Â You have to keep a count and check your tab meticulously, because they seem to have a habit of tacking on an extra round of drinks. Â My OCD friend caught it the first time, and since then I've caught it because I was looking for it. Â They're very quick to correct it, but I wonder how many times I missed the over-charge in my beer-induced bliss.
I went to BB Rover's for the first time the other day. Â I've been working across 183 from this place for 5 years and after hearing so much about it, I finally ended up there. Â My only regret about the place was that I hadn't gone their years prior. Â It's a pretty decent neighborhood bar with an amazing bottled beer selection. Â The food is rather mediocre, but hey.. it's bar food. Â The staff could have been a bit more knowledgeable about the beer selection, but I was able to try stuff I hadn't seen elsewhere.
All in all, I'm thrilled that this place exists. Â If I didn't work 2 blocks away, I probably wouldn't end up here, but since it's in my office's backyard, I'll definitely be back.
Sample 100 different beers (mostly in bottles) get the 101st one free. Â And a free t shirt. Â And a plaque on the wall. Â Not to mention the Labor Day party with FREE BEER for members of the BB Rover's Beer Club.
Stopped by today after a pedicure next door (review coming soon) and was not disappointed. Â The beer selection is impressive, although I generally prefer my beer on draught. Â The menu is divided by country, with a special section for Texas beer. Â The patio was pretty busy, without a dog in sight, sadly. Â I mistakenly chose a table downwind from some smokers, but it was pretty much the only table available. Â The service was quick and the waitron friendly, without being overly chatty or irritating. Â Not sure about her overall knowledge of beer, she suggested something to my friend that wasn't so tasty... pretty forgettable as a beer, actually.
The interior was pretty standard, complete with neon beer signs, darts and pool, and a few tables. Â The curious thing I noticed, though, was the presence of a lot of kids (not like teenager kids, little kids... even babies). Â I guess this is a family place during the day. Â Or something.
I didn't try the food, but I will sample it the next time I stop by, which I hope will be more often, since I live sort of nearby.
I like this place, and I'm glad it's my "neighborhood pub." Â The employees are really nice. Â The tables have neat table coverings with old beer labels from around the world... so if you get caught in an uncomfortable conversation, you can entertain yourself as you awkwardly stare downwards.
They have every beer in the whole damn world..... but I'd be a bit wary of ordering Random German Beer Nobody's Ever Heard Of. Â I've tasted a couple of rancid nasty beers from here. Â We're guessing that some of the less frequently requested brews have been sitting in the back room for too long.
A big plus for this pub is that it apparently has good food! Â I've only ordered a burger, which was very average, but my dog loves their plain hamburgers. Â Everybody says that the pizza is delicious. Â I've also heard good things about the breakfast. Â
This place is never crazy busy, so you can always find a place to sit. Â There is a darts setup in a room off to the side, which is cool. Â The ladies bathroom is a bit weird (see post below from Candace S), but it's fairly clean.
BB Rovers is strictly a beer joint - but it's a great beer joint! Â Their beer menu has about 200 choices, some draft, mostly bottle, from virtually every country in the world. Â There's definitely something for everyone who's a beer drinker. Â
And if you're in the mood for food, their burgers and pizza (especially the pizza) are rockin! Â They've also got good soups and sandwiches, and various appetizery stuff. Â
There's even live music Thursday through Saturday - some of it definitely better than others, but always an experience.
Great neighborhood-style place, where if you go often enough, and I have, the staff remembers who you are.
Did someone say beer club? Â You mean, you can like... join a club where people get together and drink beer? Â The 101 Club gives you 101 chances to look directly into the soul of god herself. Â Her big, black self.
This place is so cute I could eat it up and poop daisies until the end of the Earth.
My husband went to school in DC and was a big fan of Brickskeller which is bar that boasts X amount of beers from around the world. When he heard there was a similar bar in Austin, he was itching to check it out.
Armed with 2 veteran BB Rover fans, we checked this place out and he was already picking out the next 5 beers he was going to drink on his list. The inside is rather dark, but there's always a free table somewhere. We hung out for a few hours playing Nertz and my husband knocked off 8 beers on his first visit. The waitstaff was attentive and the finger foods are pretty good.
I cant say I'm a fan of the ladies bathroom--there are no locks. The doors are like saloon-type swinging doors that are rather small that show everything from your neck up and your waist down.
I first lost my shirt in a bar bet at BB Rovers in 1997-or-so. My wife was (perhaps understandably) unimpressed. Â My partner-in-darts was a fine young Brit who was rumored to 'av sprung from the womb with a 3-set of steel-tipped grouse-feathered darts in his hand. Somehow, we fell to a long-haired miscreant and his sidekick. Thankfully, we declined on the "It's for britches!" bet.
I plead the 5th on any culpability in setting up said *alleged* wagering terms.
Details aside, I can vouch for BB's beer selection. It is the best you can find North of the Gingerman - that's a long way. Woodrow's on McNeil and Parmer is the closest competitor.
To differentiate, I would say that BB's has fantastic grub, more selection and a markedly neighborhood feel. Woodrow's has limited food, and a slightly upscale, more new & clean but ever-so-slightly-meat-market, feel.
Each has their space, place, and time, Ace.
(Channeling Jesse Jackson)
I think BB's has close to 300 beers with about 12 on tap. It's a landmark for the Northside and worth your time to check it out.
PS - Old timers at BB's can all respond to, "Have you seen the one with the big mouth?". You may have to ask...
I have been going to BB Rovers since 2000, when I first moved to Austin. Â The people (both staff and customers) are great - laid back and friendly. Â Since the smoking ban went into effect, the inside is very tolerable. Â If you need to smoke, you can hang out on the patio.
They have a "101 Club" for those that drink 101 different beers. Â Entry into the club is self-paced, so it doesn't matter if you drink a little or a lot - you can take your time. Â All club members get discounts on Saturday and are invited to the Labor Day party (every Labor Day they close the bar to 101 club members only and you get to drink for free until the beer runs out. Â People bring pot luck dishes and it is a lot of fun.) Â Most of my friends are 101 members and going to the Labor Day party is practically an annual event.
The food menu is varied and most of it is very good. Â I highly recommend the Texas Spaghetti or the TI Sandwich.
Rovers is just one of the greatest hang out spots to enjoy time with friends and a few suds.
I was here for the first time tonight to watch a musician friend play. Â Thanks to Camron's review, I decided to wait and eat here, even though the gig was late-ish. Â Good call, Camron! Â The T.I. sandwich (brisket with grilled onions and jalapenos) was seriously good...the onions must have been grilled in butter, because the whole thing had a moist, buttery flavor that totally worked. Â Yum! Â
The place itself is cool - very laid back and plenty spacious, with a nice amount of outdoor seating so we could enjoy the great weather and a giant beer list that rivals War and Peace. Â Darts and pool are also available. Â Service was decent, although our waitperson seemed to have a bit of an attitude at times. Â Also, the doors on the stalls for the women's bathroom are these weird swinging things without locks that make it way too easy to walk in on somebody if you don't know to check underneath for feet beforehand. Â Bit awkward.
