I struggled with whether to give this establishment 2 or 3 stars until I saw the phrase Yelp associated with 2 stars was "Meh. I've experienced better." It's not to say the Beerhive is a bad place, and it obviously receives more positive feedback than negative, but to me it was very "Meh" and I definitely have experienced better.
On the positive side it's a nice atmosphere, and they do have a large selection of beer. Upstairs is the more "business savvy" side, there are cocktail tables, a few dining tables, and a long bar with plenty of seats. Downstairs there are several pool tables and the vibe down there is definitely that it's the portion of Beerhive in which you can let your metaphorical hair down.
As I love to support the locals, I ordered an Epic Capt'n Compton's Pale Ale, along with a Crispy Chicken Sandwich and some fries which were the epitome of pub food - meaning, it was decent but probably more appealing  because I had hiked down Solitude earlier that day and I was so famished I think I would have been satisfied eating a cardboard box covered in ranch dressing.
I poured over the beer list, thirsty but our server was like a flash that would occasionally pass through my field of vision but never came back to check on us. Sure, I could have gone to the bar and ordered a beer but that kind of defeats the purpose of choosing a table. I was served one beer in a two hour span. I had a pocket full of money I would have loved to burned on a few more frothy brews but eventually my friends and I got so frustrated with the complete lack of acknowledgment and moved on.
Long story short: beer good, service bad.
I have definitely experienced better bars. However, it has a nice atmosphere. The beer selection is weird, there are not a lot of pilsners or lighter beers on the menu. The food is not so good. Â I've had lasagna that tasted like it came out of a Stouffer's box and looked like soup. I've also had burnt fries from here. Â Seating is also limited.
Review Source:Saw the reviews and decided to drop in.
The ice bar was a little over-rated but a cool novelty. It did keep the beer cold only for the last gulp (to give you an example, the bartress left an ice water on the ice bar when I first got there and it was totally room temp by the time i finished my first beer).
I ordered the local Uinta Cutthroat pale ale draft and it was good even though it was less than 4% content. Â Nice recommendation by bartress Del who did a great job of servicing the restaurant all by herself even if it was mid-day on Wednesday.
Ordered the Reuben sandwich (which Del explained was NOT made in house but by the restaurant next door; which was fair warning). Â It wasn't bad, but it wasn't mind-blowing either. Â Fair.
The atmosphere was definitely a nice non-blaring, non-sports bar, take someone there for some conversation type of bar. Â Given that I was there mid-day, weekday, but I could see how it could be a great place to go even in the evening on a busy weekend. Â Will definitely go back when in town again. Â Thanks, Del!!
Downstairs has a few pool tables and a more sporty area ableit small area. Â Probably an area where it could get a little bit more noisy and rowdy I would assume. Â But, again a smaller area.
P.S. Â I agree with her (Del) about all the assh*les who are leaving bad reviews and trying to extortion all these establishments. Â It's unacceptable and unfortunate that this forum is leading to these types of greedy bastards who lead to these types of behavior and can't just leave reviews to what they are....good ones are good, bad ones should stay bad and not go to your restaurants trying to get money from you to change the reviews. Â Sorry to hear that.
If in SLC and if you like beer.....go there :)
I was impressed by the great selection of craft beer, they even had longboard lager (which I just didn't expect in Utah) and my favourite Gordon Biersch Czech Pilsner. After being there alsmost every night during my stay in SLC I just needed to write this review. Service was good and no, I didn't try the food. You will have to read some other reviews for opinions on that.
One day I stopped in for a beer...well, some Scotch actually. The whole ice bar was neat-o-rama but the glass wasn't exactly clean. I paid a couple dollars less for the particular variety of whisky than I'm used to seeing in other SLC bars, so I guess that gets me some leftover lipstick. Still, I'll go back and try it again. May even try the food. It has that frat/pub sort of feel so be prepared.
Review Source:Terrible customer service. Lisette in particular. After waiting a few minutes with an empty glass I was finally asked if I wanted another beer. I understand Utah has antiquated drinking laws and they can't serve you right away but it was clearly empty for some time. Eventually she asked me if I wanted another, I said yes and she proceeded to the other end of the bar for 10 minutes. The 2nd shift came on and asked if I needed anything, I ordered and expressed my disappointment with the wait. I received my beer and then Lisette decided to take the high road, not, and stopped by to tell me I can move to a table if I'm not happy with the speed of service. Which of course was not necessary. Just explain how busy you were and move on or don't say anything at all. I think this is just a locals place, it seems the vagrant who's name they knew got better service.
Review Source:OK so I'll start off my review by saying: I'm allergic to beer, so if that is something you care about, feel free to ignore this review! Â I'll just discuss everything else.
I ended up going in twice (though only ordering food once) and it was quite busy both times. Â The food - well, let us say it is not very good and certainly way over priced.
The atmosphere is nice, especially upstairs. Â The downstairs could use a bit of work, but at least there is plenty of room and a couple pool tables...
They do have a nice selection of scotches and whiskeys, though I'd put the price a dollar or so more expensive than I normally like!
Still the bottom line is: the drinks seem good but the food is terrible; don't come here if you want that as a part of your night out.
I hated this place. Â Their craft beers were not the best tasting, overpriced, and their bottled selection was disappointing. Â They don't have Jager (wtf??), and they also don't "mix liquors". Â I guess they're just better than that. Â The only word I can think of to describe this place is pretentious, which is just not my style.
Review Source:This place was great! Â Prices were good, our waitress (Gretchen) was nice, funny, and overall a great waitress!
It's a cool and laid back ambience. Â If you sit at the bar, they have this really cool ice strip that runs along the bar where you can place your beer or iced drink to keep it cold. Â
Prices weren't bad either: I had a pint of Red Rock Brewing amber ale for $4. Â My boyfriend had 3 bottles of a Sierra Nevada porter for $5 each. Â We shared a reuben that came with french fries for $10. Â The reuben was pretty tasty and the fries were nice and crunchy.
If I am ever in Salt Lake City again, I will definitely come back.
The Beerhive is a clean and friendly bar with a great selection of Utah craft beer and an ice strip down the bar to keep drinks cold. They also have pool tables downstairs for a slight cost (maybe $1.25?), so bring quarters if you want to play. We were impressed to find something like this in Salt Lake and will go back next time we're in town. The bartender was also very friendly about recommending local beers.
Review Source:All I can say about The Beerhive is holy beers!!!!! An awesome selection of beers from everywhere in the world, along with a ton of locals on tap or bottles. I love being able to sit at the bar with snowy ice bar keeping my beer nice and cold. Since my last visit here they have now added food to the menu. Â I was not able to try out the food since I just popped in for a beer or five. But I will note this for my next visit. Bartenders are always nice and happy to help with your beer selection or cocktail. I will definitely be back for sure.
Review Source:What took me so long to come here??? Â Oh yeah its on main street thus no parking. Â I went during slow time so bartender was very attentive and cool. Â Interior is warm and cozy with dark woods. Â Downstairs there are pool tables. Â I would stick to beers or shots, not impressed with the mixed drinks.
Review Source:This is the place! The Beerhive is a destination for Utah craft beer snobbery and has supplanted all of my college dive bars in Salt Lake City. Most recently I visited on the Saturday before Christmas. It was appropriately packed with men dressed like Santa and women dressed like Christmas...pixies? (wtf SLC?) Due to the madness of the holiday weekend, I will not deduct stars for the somewhat poor service. Our server was seriously overworked and I think bars and eateries should consider staffing as something that is noticed by customers. OK, criticism done, on to beer...
I had an Epic Spiral Jetty IPA (bottle), followed by a Zion Canyon Amber Ale (draft). A good tip for out-of-towners: Utah draft beer is tasty and very water-like. Follow up any real beer (you will find this in bottles) or cocktail with a draft pint of Squatters, Zion, or Uintah beer, and you will feel refreshed and ready for a new day. (You may also want to try an ice water...but the draft beer is about the same thing.) I sincerely love all of these beers, and purchased a case & 1/2 of Epic to bring back to Los Angeles. Utah craft beer FTW!
The Beerhive is a great place to enjoy some of these Utah beers. I hope you, dear reader, will stop in before or after taking a swim in the reflection pool at Temple Square. Enjoy.
Beerhive is my new favorite go to pub whenever I'm in SLC. Â For years SLC suffered from a lack of good pubs. Â Squatters is really more of a restaurant, the Bayou usually has some awful jazz band that makes it impossible to talk, and don't get me started on the many sports bars in SLC that serve as a mating ground for 21-24 year olds. Â But the beerhive manages to avoid all of these pitfalls. Â How have they done this?!? Â They have a large craft beer selection with plenty of seating and they don't f*ck it up with crappy local bands, blaring TVs, or catering to folks who just want to find that special someone for the night. Â
Don't get me wrong, at some point in everyone's life (including mine) you will want the loud TV, local band, or a place to find someone you could potentially date (until you sober up and realize what a bad idea that is). Â But friends at some point in everyone's life (my current stage) you will just want a pub that cares about serving delicious beer and not f*cking it up with such distractions. Â
Because my review is becoming overly complicated, unlike the beerhive, let me simplify. Â You will enjoy the beerhive if you enjoy good beer and having a nice place to sit and talk with friends. Â Plain and simple.
One last note for you out of towners. Â I moved to LaLa land a few years ago and had to be reminded by the bartender that draft beer in UT is only 3.2%. Â My advice, get tipsy on two strong bottled beers and switch to draft, you can keep drinking without hating yourself in the morning.
Beerhive is an awesome little bar with a great atmosphere and a huge selection of exotic and locally brewed beers (Epic Brewing company is well... Epic!!).
I came here after dinner with a couple of work buddies while on a business trip. We had a great time and ended up staying way too late, and drinking a little too much (what else is new lol). One of us had been been before and suggested it to the group.
My only negative comment is the mens bathroom was a little sketchy, and i wish it was a little cleaner but thats every bar I've ever been too. There was only one server and a couple of bartenders but that seemed to be enough as it was a Wednesday night and wasn't too crowded. Â
Beerhive is probably the best bar we've been to in the downtown SLC area and I will be returning the next time I'm town.
Not sure how I have not reviewed this place yet. Â Maybe I have - it would have told me right? Â regardless...
I love this place. Â Great beer selection. Â Patio is cute and right on Main. Â The inside bar has a frosted marble slab to set your beer on as you chat. Â
I met a blind date here that I ended up marrying. Â PRobably not an outcome your should expect, but I think it would be one of my favs even if that hadn't happened. Â :)
Let me first say that there is quite a variety of local and other beer here. The tap beer in UT is not great, so I'd get bottled. The food is actually pretty good. I've had the buffalo wings, hummus plate, turkey burger, some of the salads....they were all pretty tasty. The reason for 3 stars? Service! It seems almost every time I've gone in, they have been short handed. And the ice strip on the bar does nothing but cool off my hands. :)
Review Source:I love the Beerhive, and I am by no means a 'beer person.' First time I visited was on a Saturday at 6 with my girlfriends; we had great service and ended up staying far too long. Second time was a Thursday evening with my guy friends; they didn't have enough staff on hand for our table to have its own server but hitting up the bartender for drinks was not a problem.
Like I said, I'm not a beer person but the beers I have had there were delicious.
I like the crowd this place attracts and the ice bar is a nice touch. A great place for watching sports with the guys or catching up with your girls.
Beerhive is a really cool, yet very crowded, bar in downtown. Â Sometimes the service is lacking, but the beer selection, decent bar food (love the wings and calamari), and ice bar make up for it. Â What is an ice bar? Â It's this strip of ice that they have through the bar for you to set your beer on to keep it cold. Â I love coming here, but sometimes it's just too busy.
The beer selection is fantastic. Â I prefer this place over The Bayou, our other must-try bar for beer enthusiasts, for the location and the food.
One of the top beer bars in the state! Â The selection is not as vast as The Bayou's, but they make up for it with other varieties not offered there and general ambiance. Â The ice bar is a cool touch and the bartenders are very nice and helpful. Â
They do not have their own kitchen but you can order food there and the restaurant next door (Italian I think) makes the food. Â I haven't eaten there but it looks pretty good. Â Go for the beer!
7/18/12: Returned and showed a colleague this place. This place was busier and had the same fun ambiance. The crowd was mix with college students and older regulars. Â The ring of ice is still a hit though we couldn't sit there.
From 2/17/12: Huge selection of beers. Reminds me of Yard House in San Jose CA. Â Lots of local brewery beers. The decor is clean and simple. Has a ring of ice around the bar to keep the beer nice and chill. Sweet concept.
I didn't try the food.
I ate lunch at Beerhive Pub today, and I can't say much about the beer there, so don't ask.
I had a sandwich called "the Beerhive" and was piled high with so many cold cut meats, I had to wonder what wasn't on the sandwich (I know, Mitch, even after we talked about this last night).
That said, the bread was fantastic, and only when I noticed that the three others at my table were done eating, their plates gone and their cups empty, did I notice how LARGE the sandwich was. And worth every bite.
For the rest, the atmosphere felt like a upscale bar, with a hoppin' jazz melody playing over head that made me want to get up and shake what my momma gave me. Â A great way to start a week with two Mondays in it. Prices were decent, and I spent about $13 for a sandwich and carbonated beverage.
Holy mother of beer. They have quite a selection of beers in that place.
If you are in the mood for trying different beers, ciders, and ales, this is the place to go with a bunch of mates, everyone orders something different, and let the pints go around the table.
Do not do that if one of you has mono or herpes.
Other than that the bar is great. Has a nice feeling, and the servers are nice.
I will definitely be going back with my friends.
After moving from California to Utah, it was on my immediate agenda to find places in Salt Lake City in which my husband and I could enjoy a nice, ice cold microbrew...and not a 3.2%, but full strength. Luckily, I was able to find that and more at The Beerhive.
Not only did the Beerhive have this for me, but they have an amazing "ice bar" to keep my beer cold. The size of their beer list is reminiscent of Yard House. I love that they offer several different Utah microbrews, as I now bring friends and family who have come into visit us so they can try different ones in one sitting. I was excited to see they also offer several Rogue beers as this is one of my favorite breweries out of Portland (I would like to request they carry their Juniper Pale Ale! It's delicious!).
Only gripe was their service...its been a hit and a miss for me. They often seem understaffed, and I have found myself at times flagging the bartenders down to get a beer. :(
However, I still think this place is a must do for any beer lover visiting or living in the Salt Lake City area! I always bring in friends and family who have flown into visit here and they have all loved it. It will not disappoint!
Not a local, just in SLC for the weekend. Came in on a Friday night with my girl and it was crowded; standing room only. We tend to prefer the quiter joins where you can site and talk. A major plus is there is a huge beer list to choose from, and lots of local brews to try on tap. A couple of local brewery drafts were only $4 each.
Seemed to be the only thing really still open when we were in the Creek Center square area, but we're just tourists.
This wonderful haven nestled in the heart of downtown SLC boasts a bountiful ballot of brews that will please beer geeks and businessmen alike. Â If beer is not your style, don't fret--wine and a full bar await you.
Beerhive has served as the happy hour (*gasp* forbidden words!!) establishment for my department at the U of U on numerous occasions and has always been satisfactory. We usually arrive around 5pm, earning the clever phrase 'The Hive at Five', which usually allows us to grab a table. The main exception is on Fridays, when the place tends to overflow with downtown business-types celebrating the start of the weekend. Â
That brings me to my only semi-serious qualm. When this place becomes packed, you'll often struggle with finding a convenient place to stand. Be warned, crowding behind the people perched on bar stools--which often happens, especially near the entrance--will result in bottle-necking people trying to enter the bar and irritated servers. Â Seems like common sense, but I've witnessed it (and tried to squeeze through it) many times.
Crowded night or not, once I get my hands on a beer list, I'm a happy camper. Â In addition to double-digit taps of your standard Utah-strength brews, there are large lists of bottled beers in all strengths and sizes, already conveniently organized for you by type. Craving a Belgian-style ale on a warm Spring evening? Say hello to numerous dubbels, tripels and quads of varying name complexity. Â Need something dark and heavy on one of those chilly Winter nights? Plenty of porters and stouts approaching is-that-still-considered-beer strength are available to warm you up.
Once you' have your beverage of choice, grab a table and take in the warmth that the combo of exposed brick and dark wood offer inside, or snag a seat at the bar and behold the wonder of constantly cold beer brought to you by the strip of ice that runs the length of the bar. Â Even better, if the patio is open, head outside and take in the beautiful Utah weather and surprisingly quiet downtown atmosphere.
Alas, if the hunger-bug strikes, I might suggest to move on to another bar or one of the many great restaurants nearby. Â I never had the pleasure of ordering food from neighboring Vienna Bistro, which I was told on my first visit had closed. Â Unfortunately, the basic menu and seemingly average food carried past my table only confirms it. .
The bar has a ring of ice built into it! Do you really need another reason to love a bar?

They also have a huge beer list, but not a great scotch list. I'll be back (should I have to go to Utah again).
Let's just say one day you're driving down the street in Salt Lake City. You look out your window and notice a man in his early 30's acting a little bizarre. You slow down waiting for something to happen and then BAM! He tears off his clothes running down the street attempting to tear his own genitals off and runs head first into the statue of Joseph Smith rendering him unconscious.
Would you think this man was crazy? Probably right? That's because you would be closed minded.
If you would think outside of the box you probably would have realized that this man had been in Beerhive Pub drinking all day. He was sitting next to the front window perving on the hot Mormon girls that walk by. (Full on hands on the window breathing heavily against the glass fogging it all up)
Once drunk this man realized his penis had no use to these women unless he became a member of the LDS Church. That not being an option he opted to discard of his genitals by tearing them off. What use are genitals when you can't have the woman of your dreams?
After realizing what a big mistake he made (There are still craigslist hookers after all) the man seeking vengeance for the self mutilation he just caused ran after the culprit of it all. Joseph Smith. The iron statue. Head first. Bad move.
Of course this story was fiction. But it is a good lesson. I would file it under the "education" section. Just go to Beerhive. Sit on that damn seat and perv on the girls that walk by. I will say this. They're hot, but they're untouchable unless you want 8 children and give up 15% of your paycheck to god.
Beerhive has a frozen river of ice that runs the entire length of their enormous bar. What a clever idea. You keep your drink cool while sitting it on the strip of the bar. Why couldn't a California bar think of that?
Look at my pictures. The bartender was wearing the Mormon Drinking Team shirt. Which I bought and wore. I thought this was my "in" to the aforementioned saints outside. Alas, it was my demise. I am too old for drinking. Let alone a Mormon drinking squad.
After this trip I fear I will never return to the land of Zion. It resembles something of what the Apocalypse might look like. Nobody is out on the streets. Everything is closed on Sundays. It's just scary there. I'll stick to my surfing and bitchy women in Southern California.
F you Joe Smith
Beerhive is at the top of my list for happy hour hangouts. Â And it's not just because it has one of those cool frozen-icey-strippy things (sorry, I really have no idea what these contraptions are called) along the bar that keeps my beer cool as I glare at all the attorneys around the joint. Â
Yes, because Beerhive is in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, it attracts a number of attorneys around happy hour, who have offices in one of the many surrounding high-rent high-rises. Â In spite of the rumor (actually, a fact) insurance brokers and attorneys don't always get along famously, I always enjoy my time with the legal nerds as they raise a glass to their court room victories (or losses).
Even my partner, Darcy "Oh-My-God-Why-Is-My-Check-In- Feed-All-Bars" G., enjoys meeting her attorney cronies here for drinks and snacks. Â She likes it for the wine; I like it for the AWESOME selection of beer. Â I enjoy the Main Street atmosphere as I hang out here on my own, with my partner, and with friends. Â
And don't forget, there is always pool in the basement if the legalese gets too deep on the main floor.
Do you like beer? Do you want to try out local brews and really appreciate the flavors available to us here in Salt Lake City? Are you interested in learning about the fascinating history of beer in Utah? Well then, get thee to the Beerhive!
They have a very large menu of beer along with other spirits, including the local High West whiskey which is one of my favorite winter treats. As you scan the list of beers, you'll see a star next to what is local making it easy to pick them out and all the options are listed by beer style. They also have a good sized list of "on draft" beer. And if you are a history buff, you can buy a copy of "Beer in the Beehive" a history of beer in Utah for only $10. I received a copy of the book for Christmas this year and have really enjoyed it. I was delighted to see they sell it at the Beerhive!
They do have food and it seemed to be of good quality. I liked my vegetarian quesadilla. The service was a little slow, but I felt like all my needs were taken care of. I was really glad I came!
