I stopped into Biere with my fiance on a Friday evening. Since this place is advertised as a beer/wine bar we took a seat at what appeared to be the bar. Our lovely waitress came over and we ordered two drinks and an appetizer. Then it got awkward. A man who I'm assuming is either the owner or manager came out and was obviously very upset with our waitress for letting us sit at the bar. He felt the need to come over to us as well and let us know that we normally could not sit at the bar unless we were ordering dinner but since it was not busy it would be ok this time. He seemed genuinely upset about this. How silly of us to assume we could sit at the bar in a quiet restaurant on a Friday night. We were made to feel very unwelcome and will not be back which is a shame as we both live and work on the North Fork.
Review Source:Great beer list, especially Belgians, but bland and overpriced food.
The mussels, placed centrally on the menu, were small and dried out. Â The spinach crisp appetizer was good. Â The eggplant timballo cost $22 for a very small but fairly tasty portion of glorified eggplant parm. Â The shrimp and asparagus pasta was unbelievably bland; we had to ask for salt and pepper (not provided automatically) to make it even vaguely palatable.
At this price point ($22-$30 for small and bland entrees!) it comes off as an insult to not accept any credit cards. Â Having to shell out $53 each for a dinner we left hungry, with one drink apiece, was much harder to swallow when we had to pay cold hard cash than if we could charge the meal.
Lots of weirdness, too: the draft beers aren't listed on the menu, so you have to get out of your seat to go over to the bar to see what they are (unless you happen to be sitting at a few tables with a line of sight for them). Â An odd oversight for a beer-focused place.
The staff were very friendly, at least.
Run, don't walk to Biere. As the name might suggest, the place has a fabulous selection of beers from around the world. Beer, though, is just the overture to what is a celebration for the mouth and eyes. When Frank grinned his welcome: 'Let me feed you', we put ourselves in his hands and were treated to tasting sizes of the most fabulous foods. The owner serenaded my palate with tastings of salmon en croute, homemade sausage, pickled eggplant tapanade, mussels steamed in ginger broth, aged cheese, slivered shiitake mushrooms, roasted red peppers marinated in olive oil...oh, it goes on! My mouth was having a party. The last time I ate this well, I was in Europe. And since it was tastings, I am guilt free. Ah! Of course, he also has a dinner menu, but with tastings this good and this varied, I left completely sated. Loved it! We'll definitely be back!
Review Source:Biere (Beer in French) is Greenport's first Belgian craft beer bar and it comes in with a bang!!! This is quite a welcomed addition to the town of Greenport and it is unlike any other establishment there. They feature a very large Belgian beer selection, all of the One Woman Winery's wines along with Italian tapas that are awesome! Here's what happened:
Food:
+ Antipasto plate. Â 4 different types of toast points, 3 types of cheeses, lentils, eggplant spread, eggplant, porcini mushrooms, olive tapenade, sundries tomato spread, roasted peppers, celeric with truffle and mushroom campenata. This was awesome...great combination of items that were all made perfectly. Nothing was overly salty, sweet or over powering. Nice job!
+ Spinach Crisp. I'm not a big spinach guy but this was awesome - it was crispy, warm, spinachy with prosciutto and fresh mozzarella. Definitely one of the best spinachy things I've had in years! It came with olives....I love olives.
+ Mussels. It was served in a damn good tomato marinara which was thick and hearty...the way I like it! Most places nowadays have an overly thing/runny marinara which is not conducive to mussels as it just runs out of the shell and makes a splattering mess.
+ Eggplant Croquette. Definitely the best item of the night - the basil mayo side sauce that was I smeared on was a perfect compliment. The croquette was crispy, soft, moist and juicy. The eggplant was really good...I was blown away how something so simple could be so yummy!
+ Meatball. It was ONE meatball and it was good. Moist, seared perfectly on the outside and flavorful on the inside. It was also medium sized so it wasn't gigantic nor was it small.
+ Linguine with Broccoli Rabe and Shrimp. The shrimp was butterflied and the linguine was amazing - it was so light, airy and not overly filling and gross like most Americanized Italian restaurants. It was in a light olive oil sauce and I have to say that this was one of the best Italian dishes I've had in ages...perfectly sized and portioned.
+ Lemon Chicken and Capers. The final course was fantastic!! The chicken was flattened, it was super moist, delicate overly juicy!!! As I always say, most places over cook chicken....Biere obviously doesn't. The capers were great and didn't make the dish overly caper-y and salty which can happen in many cases.
Service:
+ Gabriella was my waitress and she's freakin' fantastic! She definitely knows her food and her wine, and you can learn quite a bit from her! She also is knowledgeable about every dish on the menu and can steer you in the direction you need to go when pairing your beers and wine with your food. I'm definitely going to ask for her every time I go and you should too!!!
Ambiance:
+ The place is really cool...it's trendy, classy, spacious and inviting!! They have plenty of seating at the bar or in booths...I'm a booth kinda' guy though I sat at the bar!
They feature a ~4 course tasting for $25 which when paired with some of their fairly priced beers, this place is an instant win. CHECK this place out, you will NOT be disappointed!
