Casual, unpretentious, relaxed, cheap and comfortable.........definitely not upscale but not at all menacing like some true dives. Â This is a long-time neighborhood bar with dock on the river, tucked back from the road just north of the 40th Street Bridge. Â Well-worn exterior, interior and clientele. Â After driving by for years, I had some time to kill and dropped in to a warm welcome and $1 draft Select. Â Beer only, with wine coolers for those not happy with hops. Â In mid-afternoon, a few regulars were sipping, joking and chatting, immediately including newcomers in the interchange......so they soon know your name. Â This is not of college-kids haunt and no professionally-dressed yuppies or business people in sight; most customers are working-class and well beyond ID checks. Not purely country ruddy-necked but definitely no tourists or international diversity. Â Minimal food offerings but occasional parties and free buffets for all comers.
Although I do not often visit bars, and most of the places I frequented in college are now history, I may have to do a nostalgia tour of watering holes on the North and East Sides......SoHo is well covered.
