Had the sliced beef sandwich with fries as I was in a hurry this lunchtime.  Beef was pretty flavorful although it did seem to me that I got a lot of the "burnt ends" on my sandwich.  Not that I mind burnt ends but would have liked to had a little bit more of the fatty beef on the sandwich.  There were two bottles of BBQ sauce on my table but weren't marked so couldn't tell if they were different or not (anyone know?); sauce was tasty and went well with my sandwich and dipping my fries.  All in all, not too bad; friendly folks working the place and I would definitely come back again. 3 1/2 stars...

I am a big fan of Big Mike's.

I go to Houma occasionally and for the most part always eat at the same place. Since that gets boring I was looking for a new place and found Big Mike's. Since it was located next to where I always fill up, it was easy to find.

The restaurant appears to be a new building, but is designed to look like an old roadside shack. The ordering process is simple. Order at the counter, grab your number, and find your seat.

I have tried the multi-meat sampler platters on both of my visits and have been very pleased. So far I have tried the brisket, pulled pork, sausage and ribs. The sausage is average, but everything else has been excellent. The ribs in particular are nearly perfect. I don't remember exactly how much my combo cost, but it was much more reasonable than would be expected.

I really like Big Mike's and I think you will too.

Pretty good BBQ.  Or at least the brisket was good.  The staff was friendly although there was some confusion regarding ordering.  I'll definitely be back.

I read about Big Mike's when they first opened up at 1002 Barrow street.  The reviews were terrific and so I put it on my list of places to try and time went on.....
Then sadly I read that it had burned down, I thought they might rebuilt, but the location site remained empty.
Recently, I heard someone mention that they had gotten take out, but I did not further inquire and the opportunity was lost again.
Just this week, my friend Brent Melancon said that he had a Blues gig at Big Mike's and I was not going to miss this opportunity, especially as opportunity had knocked so many times before.  I was certain I was going to answer the door.

On Friday I made my way from seeing the Pirate on his boat in Amelia to Houma.  I wasn't quite sure exactly where Big Mike's had moved to , so I punched it into Yelp, but that took me to the old location.  Luckily the phone number directed me to another location and they told me the address.  Still on Barrow...Oh okay, keep driving.....and don't bother to look for any signs to see if you are still on Barrow as the street curves, trust me you are.  It takes you past the civic center and the Main Library and then Bam! Big Mike's .....who knew.

The place was packed, I did manage to find a spot between the subway and big mike's, but his lot was full full full.  My friend Brent was outside with the band and we chatted before they went in for their gig and us to eat.

It's a simple brick building with simple wooden tables and chairs and a high ceiling and there is a long bar against the wall.  Mike's is decorated with memorabilia of great Blues Musicians and there is also a piece of artwork of Jimi Hendrix with several signatures on the wall (i assume these are musicians as I noticed Brent's signature).

The place was packed and not an open table in sight.  I considered siting at the bar, but a couple had spread out and so that was out of the question.  I really wasn't sure what to do and luckily I was able to flag down an employee to give us some direction.  This is what she told me: There are paper menus just as you walk in the door, go grab a seat and then head to the order counter and your meal will be delivered to your table.  I explained this was our first visit and she was nice enough to secure a table for us as soon as the people had left.

I dropped off the little one at our table and then headed back to place our order.  I originally ordered the pulled pork sandwich, but was informed that they were out and they were also out of the chicken.  mind you this was at 8pm and they stay open till 11pm......and they were out already, damn it must be pretty good!  I asked for a suggestion and she said that the burgers were good (but I love the Duke's burgers...soooooo) I quickly decided on the smoked brisket and fries ($6.50) and I ordered the rib plate with baked beans and potato salad for my eight year old($9.50).  I headed back to our table and pushed the number I was given into the little stand on the table and waited.

Service was swift.  My son was baffled as our order was delivered to our table in to go containers...and not a bad idea either.  There are two sauces on the table and hot sauce.  I tasted the sauces and then handed the one I thought we would like the best (I later learned from Brent, that one is more vinegar based and the other more tomato, we chose the vinegar one). My sandwich was served on a soft round bun and piled high with smoked brisket.  I doused the meat with some sauce and took a big bite.  Then everything went silent, it was like I was in a dream.  I could hear Brent singing Robert Johnson's Cross Road Blues faintly, but the hustle and bustle of the restaurant faded away as that one single bite transported me away to some dreamlike time.  By FAR the best damn barbeque I have ever tasted here in Louisiana. and that's just my dish......

The Kiddo dove right into the ribs splashing the same sauce on each rib, it looked as though there were about 5 ribs, all cut for easy eating.  The guy hardly spoke, then he got into the beans, bite after bite, straight into the mouth. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.  I tasted the potato salad and it's a sweet version and as you know I am partial to a savory salad.  Then the kiddo holding one of the two slices of white bread served with his meal (secretly he was super excited , as this Mom only buys that healthy brown stuff with seeds in it)and asked what do you think this would taste like with some of that sauce on it.  I merely gestured go ahead, as I could not be bothered while enjoying my brisket. Now the boy is gobbling his second piece of sauce bread, his eyes slightly closed as a silent applaud to Mike for his magic sauce.

next time Brent Melancon plays Blues on the 7th of September, 2012 at 7pm, I'll come in have a beer and then order...pace myself.
...... After all it comes in a to go box!
