Excellent dinner on a very busy night as it was the graduation of Washington and Lee College.  I had their hamburger which was made from a special farm beef, and tasted like it.  The french fries were extremely crisp and hot.  All the accompaniments to the burger were fresh and tasty.  My husband loved the jambalaya and felt it was as good as any he had in New Orleans.  Service was pleasant and friendly.  We would definitely return when in Lexington.

Oh, Bistro, how I love you.

So many good memories here, from brunch, romantic dinners, my bff's rehearsal dinner, drinks at the bar, etc.

I've never had a bad meal here. The bread is great. The atmosphere is intimate. The people are nice. Lexington needs more places like this.

It's a bit on the small side and doesn't accommodate groups well. It's usually crowded, but plan ahead and make reservations. It's also a little pricey and doesn't gear well towards a student budget.

All that in mind, if you're visiting from out of town, definitely stop by here. It's one of the best places in town.

Nice window table for lunch. My Almond crusted Chicken and Spinach salad was bland and smaller portion size then I expected for $10. My wife's burger was very tasty but also over priced. Overall a fair experience but marginal value restaurant.

Great atmosphere, staff, and food. Went for Sunday brunch and it couldn't have been better.

5 Stars for the Food and Service
1 Star for the crappy Bloody Mary they served me

Went here with my boyfriend over the weekend when I was visiting Washington & Lee University. We wanted to go out for a nice dinner so we decided to stop by Bistro On Main and I was so happy that we chose this place (although there aren't many other places in the area to choose from).

Let me start off by saying that the service was phenomenal. Everyone was nice and friendly, and my waiter recommended the jambalaya, which was freakin amazing, so i suggest it to you as well!

Also, the food literally came out in 5 minutes. We couldn't believe it was our meal they brought out, and were convinced for a second that they must have mistaken our order. But lo and behold, it was, indeed, our food, and we were pleasantly surprised at how fast it came out.

Everything was superb except the Bloody Mary, which tasted like a mix of water, vodka, and hot sauce, with a dash of food coloring. But other than that, I highly recommend the Bistro On Main if you're looking for some fine dining in Lexington, Virginia!

The bread is the best part of the meal.

Overall, I like Bistro, but there are easy ways they could improve. A better drink selection would be nice and it would be great if they would expand their brunch hours. There aren't enough places to brunch in LExington. The waitstaff is generally very nice, but beware if you have a large group. When I went with a large group, they hurried us out of the place after only an hour and a half, claiming we had to leave because they had another large reservation. The manager was extremely rude and the server refused to split the check; an extremely simple task. However, the food is good and they have a good selection.

Service and atmosphere are fine, food is usually lackluster. I expect more for the money, menu doesn't change, food is not always cooked properly or very flavorful. We have been here 3 or 4 times and after the last mediocre meal (and terrible blackberry cobbler, I mean seriously!) we decided never again.

The food was okay, small portions and was decent, but not great.  However, they charged me 8 dollars extra on my bill than I had written down on the receipt.  That truly disappointed me; whether it was an honest mistake or not, this shows their lack of professionalism (I made sure that my writing was clear in my receipt before I wrote this review).  I will be speaking with the manager in the following month regarding this issue, this will be interesting.

We were passing through Lexington visiting in the area. We went for a "earlier" dinner and when we arrived we were immediately seated. The place was cute and had a friendly neighbor vibe. We ordered the shrimp and grits and almond crusted chicken salad. Both were good - nice sized portions. The almond crusted chicken breast was delicious on a bed of greens that looked just out of the bag. The shrimp and grits were most tasty. I'm used to the grits being more solid but the shrimp were cooked perfectly!
They served some amazing beer bread rolls - they were memorable! Cute place, glad we tried it!

Very good service and lovely atmosphere but sadly, the food was mediocre. The poppy seed dressing that came with the salad was way too sweet.  For an entree I had red snapper which was improperly filleted - it was served with a big blood line - and the skin, which can be delicious when crisply seared, was rubbery and hidden under a bland breading. The green beans were underdone though the spinach was very tasty. My companion's shrimp and grits were seriously under-salted and soupy rather than creamy. Ironically the waitress said this was their most popular dish so we are not sure what to make of this.  We really wanted to like this restaurant and might try it a second time when we are next in town. Perhaps it was an off night for the chef.

After reading previous reviews on Urbanspoon, I had high hopes for Bistro on Main. And from visiting their website, it seemed like a place that would have a nice atmosphere with quality food without being overly fancy. It didn't disappoint. If I had to describe it in one word, I would say "cozy." It's not a big restaurant, but it's not so small you feel claustrophobic. The lighting, service, and atmosphere combine to create an environment that is very welcoming, yet not overwhelming. It's casual and classy.

I was very impressed with the service we received. Our waitress was friendly and fun without being obnoxious or awkward, which can be a fine line with good service. She made sure our glasses were full, checked on us regularly throughout the meal, and brought our dishes at the appropriate time. I wish I could remember her name to give her the credit she deserves. She did an excellent job throughout the meal.

The food was on par with the service. First, they serve homemade beer bread to your table before your food arrives. This beer bread was heavenly. A perfect crust with a sweet flavor that almost reminds you of cake. After tasting the bread and needing a second to return to Earth, I had a difficult time deciding what to order. The menu featured a variety of dishes I would have enjoyed, but I went with the grilled salmon. The salmon was topped with a mango salsa and served with sides of mashed sweet potatoes and cooked spinach. The salmon with the mango salsa was delicious. The combination of grilled fish and fruit (especially citrus fruits) is one of my favorites, and the Bistro on Main did a great job preparing this dish. Initially, I was skeptical of the sides when I saw them on the plate, but they won me over in a hurry. The cooked spinach had delicious flavor and the mashed sweet potatoes had very good texture and hints of cinnamon. Two sides I'd consider as perfect for fall weather paired with a fish and topping that reminds me of summer. Maybe not everyone's preference, but I loved it.

The food was average, they need an interior designer--we were sad we chose this place for lunch.

We have been there for dinner several times this year, and each time we love it more! The food is just so well done, and the chef definitely knows how to use flavor to enhance his dishes in creative ways that makes me want to order seconds even when I am full! The wait staff is always friendly, and when seated near the bar, the benefit is that even the bartender works as a team with the waiters to keep customer's tables clean and drinks filled. As compared to other restaurants in Lexington, this is by far the finest and most consistently great food. The prices are the additional prize ... extremely reasonable and sometimes as much as $10 less for the same entree as other places on the same street. If in doubt... choose to eat here, it is a pleasure. And the daily specials are always fantastic!

Tasty lunch options. Crowded restaurant due to a popular menu. Servers are helpful and attentive.

Clientele by the bar can be oblivious by standing too close to the seated customers.  Tried oyster po boy, bisque, chicken salad. All fine.

Liked the restaurant more than the patrons quite honestly.

I had a big group coming into Lexington over the weekend and it being an alumni homecoming weekend at VMI, I was worried that we wouldn't have a place for dinner Saturday.  I called Bistro on Main and they had room and took my reservation.

The staff was very attentive, bring us some really good bread and taking our drink orders shortly after we sat down.  Everything on the menu looked good, and I had a somewhat healthy linguine dish with chicken which was very delicious.  Everyone had a good time and this is probably one of the finer restaurants in Lexington.

I enjoy the Bistro- I have lunched here on a few occasions and it is great with friends or for a business lunch.  The menu has a good selection, great location and good views of Main Street.
I have come here for drinks with my girlfriends, too- and it is nice spot for that.  Morty, the bartender, is great and he has helped us celebrate birthdays:)  The bread pudding is delicious!

Their sweet tea was good, and the interior was nice and a little country-ish (appropriately so).

Aside from that, I had the plainest taco salad ever (at the recommendation of the waitress, who said it was her favorite there). There was zero seasoning of any ingredients, and no salsa on top. Just... weird, bland, not what you'd expect from a taco salad.

The service was also scattered, with different waitresses delivering food, dropping off the check, and taking payments from various tables without communicating so patrons were often left telling "their" waitress what was going on.

I really wanted to love it. I came back twice to make sure I was giving it a fair review. But the green beans took ages to chew - felt like they'd been on the vine for weeks too long; the salmon was fishy in that cloying way that salmon can be when it's cooked with too much moisture. The following day, for lunch, the salad was fine, but nothing to write home about (they got my order - for grilled chicken on top of the salad - wrong, and delivered shrimp, which were fine but not what I wanted).

Really wanted to love this place; may give it another try during my next visit.

    Three words: shrimp and grits!

Ok a few more: The Bistro is nice, small, and a really pleasant place to have lunch or dinner. I've never gone and not enjoyed myself.

A cute little place with surprisingly good and dirt-cheap food. I had a piece of quiche with a bistro salad, which were both quite tasty, for only $8. One of my friends had the tilapia which came with the hugest piece of fish I'd ever seen and she really enjoyed it. I think the bill for 4 of us for lunch was just under $40. Service was very friendly as well. I imagine this is one of the nicer dining establishments in town.
