First time here. Â I like the venue, it has ample seating with 9 tables or so and is easy to work at with power outlets on the sides. Â Hey, that's exactly what I was looking for, so my criteria was met! Â
Food and drink, meh. Â Had a black iced tea, honestly wasn't the best... would say that Dunkin' actually tastes fresher, and the drink price was relatively high.
Hey, this is Groton, but it is more like Pepperell to me. Â Not a lot of foot traffic and this it is surprising, given that the venue is in a mini plaza. Â Be happy there's a coffee place here at all, that's what I say. Â Staff seems nice enough.
I absolutely love Blackbird Cafe. In the 3 months I lived in Pepperell, I probably went here at least 3 times a week. And every time I'm back in town I make a point to go here and get my usual sandwich- grilled chicken, mozzarella and pesto on tuscan bread-pressed- it's soooo good. I crave it where I live now (in California) where they look at you funny if you try to create your own sandwich (and not include avocado).
The service is also super friendly and the owner-Luke and his wife always have kind words and remember you. The coffee and breakfast sandwiches are also VERY delicious-especially bacon, egg, cheese on croissant omg. Don't think about the calories- just enjoy it! Of course there's a bunch of other bread options if you so choose which is one of the reasons why this place is so great-the numerous options available. Seating and environment is lovely...if I had a cafe this is exactly what I would want it to be like. I can't think of any ways to improve it....I'm still crushing on it after traveling cross country and visiting numerous other cafes and such...Hence the 5 stars :) Wish I could take Blackbird with me.
Great pumpkin spiced lattes! I sometimes stop here on bike rides- it isn't too far from the Nashua River Rail Trail. Â A nice place to sit and read a book while sipping a coffee. The sandwiches are delicious, too. I just wish that they had more baked goods, especially gluten-free options :)
Review Source:Quality coffee and bakery. I enjoy the fresh, flavored coffee. There are pastries that are different from your standard pastry shop. There are flavored croissants and delicious Italian pastries. It is not just a bakery. One time I ordered a Chicken Caesar Salad and was pleased with the generous portions of chicken. The plates and cups are gorgeous. I especially like the green coffee cups, with the leaves on them. The cafe is always busy. Don't be surprised if you see a local selectman.
Review Source:This is the kind of cafe that makes Starbucks so successful. Sure, Starbucks' coffee is mediocre. Â But it is consistently, reliably, dogmatically mediocre regardless of where you are or what time it is. Â Compare that to local cafes. Â 90% make you wonder if the owners have ever tasted good coffee. The 10% that know and serve good coffee are worth finding, which is why I gave Blackbird Cafe a chance.
Alas, it's not a find. A latte from a push-button pump system tasted like the stuff my father in law squishes through his Keurig k-cups. The pastry case had only sweets and bagels (no croissants or scones) so I settled for a bagel which had the distinctive sweet flavor that you only get at disappointing cafes. Again, makes you wonder if the folks who contracted with the bagel supplier know what a bagel is suppose to taste like. Â
The place is super clean, well-maintained and efficient.
I've loved this place for a long time now, pretty much since it opened. So many times I've gone there by myself to use my computer and have a nice breakfast. I've met friends there to catch up and gone there with my husband as a little treat. I'm sad to say it's gone a bit downhill it seems.
My favorite food to get is the egg & cheese on rosemary foccacia and the last couple times I went it seemed to get smaller but maybe I was just imagining it. On a good note it still tasted delicious.
My favorite drink is the iced almond latte and these are now undrinkable for me. I don't know what has changed if it's the espresso, the machine or what but the last 2 times I got them I ended up throwing them out, which is particularly upsetting when you spend more than $4 a drink.
I'm sad, not sure what has changed here. I still have hope it will get better again but for now I'm not going to go out of my way anymore to stop by.
I grew up spending my summers in Chatham, yet the best lobster roll that I've ever had resides 40 miles inland..... Â Gigantic chunks of locally sourced lobster, lightly tossed in a citrusy mayo, and served on a perfectly grilled hot dog roll, just like the perfect lobster roll should be. Â No vegetable filler either (aside from the lettuce that it rests upon), just a half pound of perfect lobster.
Review Source:Good friendly people, plenty of drinks and sandwiches to choose from. Perhaps overpriced, but I like that it is a local business so I can understand that. Wish the sandwiches came with chips or anther side, not just a sandwich on a plate. I recommend the London fog (earl grey tea latte with vanilla) . Nice space, not too crowded , but I wish there were more seating options other than hard chairs at tables. Make everything to order which I like also except pastries in a display case, but they tasted fresh. Try the cannolis and you will not be disappointed!
Review Source:Terrible pastrami, passable roast beef.
-
The measure of any sandwich place is determined by the quality of two deli meats: their roast beef and their pastrami.
-
It's a cute place. Â Has a hippy-vibe to it. Â Big chalk-drawn menu above the counter. Â Art on the walls for sale ($275 for a picture of a flower?). Â Nice tables and nicely painted walls.
-
But the food is.... only ok.
We got a pastrami sandwich and a roast beef sandwich. Â We took them home. Â The pastrami was inedible. Â It was so full of gristle and fat, I was disgusted. Â I was so mad that I said if I was still at the place I would have demanded my money back. Â I threw that one out. Â Luckily, we had the roast beef sandwich, and surprisingly, I could actually take a bite through it and not come back with a mouth full of fat. Â It was passable.

I'm being kind giving this place 3 stars. Â Whatever you do, do NOT get the pastrami from this place. Â Ever.
Stopped by the Blackbird Cafe after searching the net for a good sandwich/coffee spot. We just moved back from California where excellent cafe's can be found on every corner, much like pizza joints can be found around here. We were not disappointed, my wife was thrilled with here Caprese sandwich and my turkey club was very good as well, but what we really loved was the coffee and loose Green Tea. We actually missed the place from 119 as it is in a strip mall area, but don't let that stop you, from entering you won't be disappointed. for two sandwiches, one cappuccino one green tea and a muffin we spent about $22 dollars.
Review Source:Excellent place to get sandwiches from and if your like me, a person who needs it gluten free, they are more than helpful in letting you build your own gluten free sandwich. They'll let you make your sandwich the way you want it which is great for the most part. They also have a good selection of organic drinks if you need one to wash down that sandwich of yours. If your looking to get a lunch around Nashoba Valley, this is the place to go...
Review Source:Have been there a few times for a cup of coffee and that has been good. Â Went there the other day with my family for lunch and that didn't go as well. Â Â A few minutes after ordering the greek salad we were informed that they were out of feta cheese. Â Pretty major component of a greek salad. Â They substituted some parmesan cheese and put that on top of some other less than exciting ingredients. Â Also ordered a couple of paninis. Â They were served alone on a large dinner plate without any garnish or side at all. Â :Looked a bit stark. Â One was in a grilled ciabatta, the other looked like grilled white bread. Â Maybe it was a special sourdough or something, but wasn't what I was expecting.
Review Source:Super SLOW service. Do not stop in here for a quick coffee, it doesn't exist. The one counter worker was completely focused on making an espresso (or some other time consuming) drink. I waited about twice as long as I had time for... Left out of frustration and went to Dunkin Donuts just up the street.
Review Source:SOOOoooooo yummy and unexpected! Â
Honestly, I love the town I live in but, sometimes...I feel like all these little places just don't have high standards. Â
Tired of the usual slow service and mediocre food, I decided to give Blackbird Cafe a try. Â
What a delightful surprise! Â Certainly small but, charming and modern.
The girl on staff was friendly and assured me that my food would take 5 minutes or so (I was used to another place in town with VERY slow service and I had some place to be!).
I had a Mint Chocolate Mocha and (while I'm not a coffee, mocha, latte person) it was very yummy! Â My sandwich was AMAZING...the Northender. Â Put together flawlessly and also delicious! Â
We will DEFINITELY be telling everyone we know and it will be my new "go to" for take out sandwiches! Â
Thank you for doing the small town cafe right!
Exactly what I was looking for, the go-to place for espresso and pastries.
Latte's are delicious, great foam and nicely flavored espresso. Â The pastries are all so good, especially the chocolate croissant...mmmmm
Sandwiches also went over well with everyone. Â Friendly staff, nice selection, yeah I pretty much can't find anything to fault them on.
I've only been here twice, but it is already looking like a favorite place to visit for lunch or coffee.
My first visit was during my morning commute and I grabbed a cafe mocha from Katie, one of the owners. Â She knows her coffee! Â I chatted with her for a bit about the store and the town while she made the drink and left feeling pleased to have met another nice person in Groton. Â The drink was superb! Â Not too sweet and not too bitter, a great balance of the coffee and chocolate flavor.
On my next visit, I brought my wife for a mid-afternoon lunch. Â We ordered two sandwiches (spicy turkey and pastrami, I think) and two drinks. Â My wife got a decaf caramel machiatto and had a simple cup of coffee. Â The coffee is great here...I can't stress that enough. Â After years of drinking Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, and even the stuff at the other cafe in town, I'm thrilled to find such high quality coffee.
Our sandwiches were excellent. Â Both were made in the panini and had wonderful flavors. Â The deli meat tasted fresh and natural, not like the stuff that is sometimes found at Subway. Â
The best part of the experience was talking with Luke, the other half of the owner pair. Â He was super friendly and interested to hear our story (we just moved to the town a year ago) and really made us feel welcome at the cafe and in town. Â I'm sure Katie shares his sensibilities, but she was busy in the back of the cafe at the time.
There are a few things hurting the place right now, but I'm sure that they will be addressed going forward.
* No big signage on the road.
* No website with menu.
* Presentation of sandwiches was a bit too simple.
None of these things are a reason to avoid this place, but I think it bears mentioning.
I highly recommend this place to the folks in the area looking for great coffee and sandwiches. Â You may pay more for your cup of joe here than at DDs, but the tastes are worth every penny!
A favorite stop of mine when I am in Massachusetts to visit family. Â I really like Blackbird's coffee and sandwiches. Â Their soups are really good too but I think their coffee is the best. Â I am used to good coffee shops in Brooklyn and Blackbird's coffee is up there with the best of them.
Definitely a great place to grab your morning coffee and breakfast or get a sandwich and some soup for lunch.
I'm not going to deny that I've been waiting for this place to open. The sign, placed teasingly on the side of 119, advertising an opening in December... & finally, I got to check it out.
I've always been a bit surprised at the shortage of good cafes/sandwich/coffee shops in the area - you know, the kind with many different coffee options, well-crafted sandwiches, a nice place to sit, etc. So I'm glad this place exists.
There is a good amount of seating inside, although there seems to be ample room for more. It's a little bare, but that might just be because it just opened (but I do think it would benefit from a different color paint on the walls - it's kind of... plain.) All the seats were taken when I came in at lunchtime, so it's already a popular spot. There are several sandwich options, a soup of the day, salad, & kid's menu, as well as a simple breakfast menu. But what you should really get stoked on is the coffee/tea menu - I got a cafe mocha & it was absolutely perfect. I'm going to go ahead & say that all the other coffees would be just as perfect. Dunkin Donuts should be empty from now on.
The caprese panino I ordered was delicious - they use a basil-walnut pesto that is a creative change from the usual basic stuff that you find on a tomato mozzarella. It's a well-sized sandwich, too - enough to hold you over for the rest of the afternoon, but not leaving you feeling like you won't need to eat dinner. I also picked up a loaf of apple cinnamon bread from their selection of baked goods.
Five stars! Even if it stays painted hospital yellow.
Thanks to owners Luke and Katie Kenney, Groton has a new breakfast shop with top notch coffee, tea and delicious food. The espresso beans are fresh enough roasted that they still have a complex finish, the tea from MEM is the same great Earl Grey that is served at Gibbet Hill. I also had a rich light & buttery croissant unlike the bland and tasteless fare from a Starbucks or Dunkin.
Review Source:Great place! I went this morning and had an excellent iced mocha coffee - not just bad coffee with Hershey's syrup, like you often get. And their bagels are great - tasty and chewy like real NY bagels. I had a bacon/egg/swiss bagel sandwich - yummmmmm. I suddenly have a new local place - yay!
