I thought all hope was lost for the Brimmer but am glad to see they are under new ownership as Blu.  I was there for the grand opening of the new place and have to say I was impressed.  They did a great job cleaning the place up and moving away from the divey place it used to be.  The waitstaff was professional and attentive and space was upscale and open.  There is a lot of potential here.  I was also told they are working on turning the downstairs into an whiskey and cigar bar eventually.

The drink menu looked good as well as the food.  I think this place is still trying to get it's bearings by looks of the patrons as it determines what it is supposed to be.  The crowd was mixed from people who looked like they belonged in a divey bar to folks who were dressed up mixing in with the new vibe.

I really hope this place adds some class to the somewhat unclassy Manchester nightlife scene.

This place is fine. I wouldn't go here again though. Its not my scene. Most of the people are older and it's funny watching them get drunk. Prices were ok. Bartenders were alright. There's better places in Manchester to have a good time in my opinion. This one doesn't really leave a stamp in my memory.

Forty something cougars. $5 cover. $7 martinis. Bison sized doormen. Rock and roll cover bands. One of my least favorite places in downtown Manch to have a beer.

The brimmer isn't a bad place but there are plenty of other bars in the area I would rather go to. The fact that they always have a cover is a real turnoff.

They have two floors which is nice when you want to get away fromt he bad so you can talk. However, once the DJ starts downstairs and the dancing begins, again, you can't really have a conversation without screaming at each other. If you want to dance, downstairs is your typical club type feel but it is small and gets crowded really fast. Bouncers usually stand at the entrance of the dance area and are not always pleasant.

Drinks are okay (I really only have 1 or 2 different drinks when I go out though).  I have never tried the food so I can't say anything about it.

Overall, I would rather go someplace else!

This is a hit or miss place depending on what you are looking for.

If you are looking for a good band, some dancing zero talking and you don't mind paying a cover then this is the place for you.

If you are looking to go out with some buddies and listen to music while holding a conversation over an inexpensive pint, don't even bother.

If you get there early or go at lunch the food is better than average for pub food.

Definately some place that you have to be in the mood to go to and willing to pay a cover for some good music  (kind of a meat market too if you are looking for that).

    disjointed review starts now:

the place is huge, multi-floored, with a stage on the main floor and a dj set up downstairs. bars in both areas. i think there's an upstairs but i didn't check it out. the setup is helpful because, although it's a large place, pretty much everyone in manchester and the surrounding area ends up here on a saturday night. there's a line out the door at midnight and there's pretty much nowhere to stand (and FORGET about sitting) if you get there at 10:00 p.m. or later.

there's always, ALWAYS a line for the bathroom. try the third door, the one on your right, if you're looking at the bathrooms. there's one toilet in there. enjoy the graffiti.

you'll probably get a drink faster at the bar downstairs, even though the one upstairs is larger and has a better selection.

beware if you've been feeling lately like you're getting old. the live music on the main floor can be a bit too loud. fun, but loud.

don't worry about what to wear. there are some broads in full clubwear grinding "sexily" with chicks in walmart couture. my fiance took a picture with a chick that looked like snooki, complete with bumpit.

the prices seem to be some of the highest in the area. it still didn't seem so bad, though. i bought a round for 5 people that cost $25.

    i think it's pretty inside.

it gets so crowded that the staff told us to move at least three times because we were blocking walkways. there legit wasn't anywhere else to go unless we wanted to go downstairs, which we did, and we ended up miraculously grabbing tables. that meant we missed out on the band, which was doing some fun covers. it sucks when you go to a place and you want to rock out, but there isn't room for such rockings. good for them, though, for a) keeping walkways clear and b) doing so much business. at least they were nice every time they made us move.

    this is THE manchester bar.

Recently transplanted from NYC and I came here on a whim with a cousin (of sorts).

Battered Cougars looking for free drinks, 20-something broads with really cheap mall clothes on and of course the ONE fat friend that drove them all, Guys with pleated Dockers and piss stains on their crotches because they are too drunk and forget to stop before the shove it back in.  Bad cover band music by musicians that claim to be "ROCK" but play pop and country.

Thats basically what I found at The Brimmer.

Just not my cup of tea. It's LOUD (really really) and crowded, but not in a good way. I suppose it's all about preference. BUT I must admit that the band was great. They covered many songs and played a good show. Waitress came by regularly asking for drink refills, that's nice. $5 cover, $10 cc minimum.

I'm willing to bet that the Brimmer has one personality at 5PM and an entirely different one at 12AM.

I want to go back and experience it at 5PM.  I think this place has really great potential.  Classy interior design, good feng shui, high ceilings, simple menu... we'll see.  I'm very hopeful :)

Late at night on the weekends however, which is usually when I go, the upstairs smells like armpits.  Granted, it's full of sweaty dancing people so it makes sense ;)

Redeeming qualities: awesome live bands, very liberally poured mixed drinks (at decent prices), coat checking for free (leave a tip!) and very friendly staff.

I like the Brimmer.  I'll go back for sure :)

On the weekends, my buddies and I head to Blu (formerly The Black Brimmer) to watch live bands, have drinks, and people watch (a mixed crowd). The main floor has a full bar & TVs and the place is usually packed with people on the "dance floor" in front of the band stage and around the bar. The band music is very loud and sometimes we head downstairs to the lounge have a conversation and chill. In the downstairs lounge, there's another bar with tables & seating and Top 40 music is usually playing in the background. At 1:00 AM, the lights get bright for closing time.

CON: The cover charge is $8.00 for cover bands, which is high for the area. Comparable nearby places don't charge high cover.

The place is non-smoking which by itself puts it ahead of most spots on Elm.

    UPDATE:

Now that NH is non-smoking this place has even less appeal. I got really tired of going to the Brimmer after living here for about a year. The same lame rock cover bands were there week after week. Manchester has way better bars than this (see Strange Brew).
