Excellent service from Kat at happy hour - friendly and attentive, and $3 Blue Moon beer is hard to beat. But the decor's pretty spartan and the beer selection is limited, with none on on tap.

I discovered this gem of a bar shortly after moving to California and have been stopping by every couple of weeks. It has a nice atmosphere and the service is very friendly. Good strong drinks too. There's an awesome live jazz show every Sunday evening with just a $5 cover charge.  Thursday evenings are also pretty lively here.

A nice little bar with well priced drink. We went in the early evening and were watching the Obama/ Romney debate and everyone was laughing and having a good time. I will be back if I'm in the neighborhood.

On the TV above the bar, the Giants were unfortunately going down to the Cards in the opening game of the National League play-offs, adding just the right note of melancholy to leaven the otherwise whoop-de-doop mood folks were feeling at the the weekly Sunday Night jazz jam in the pleasantly darkened confines of the Blue Note Lounge.

Like one of the previous reviewers noted, this is a black hangout. Billie Holiday and Jackie Wilson posters.. Barack Obama cut-outs tacked on the walls. On Sunday evening at least it's mostly an older person's black hangout.. Or not really, but a hangout for anyone who appreciates some nice club jazz. The Gus Owens quartet, the house band, does its thing for about an hour and then they start letting guests up to the mic.

The crowd is pretty friendly if you pop up to the bar for a drink. If you ask for time at the mic, they are, uhm, *nice* enough, and if you show you can hang with the band, they acknowledge that with whoops and hollers.. And lots of good singing and instrumentalists.. so lots of whoops and hollers

Five dollars cover for the jam at the door.

If their TV had shown the Giants *winning,* I'd be giving this place six stars..

Having lived in the area for years, I have to say my boyfriend and I have passed by this place a million times and have never been inside.

Yesterday was my birthday and we were looking for a place to have some celebratory drinks and listen to some good music.  We agreed on karaoke and went looking for something local.  The first place we went to turned out to be surreal (private rooms, older men with very young dates and exorbitant fees) so we left.  I looked up karaoke on my smart phone and The Blue Note Lounge popped up, so I called and asked them if they had karaoke.  Yes, they have karaoke but, it's only on Thursday.  What to do?  We finally decided to go to the bar that we pass all the time and see if they were open.  It turns out the place was The Blue Note Lounge!  LOL!

This place is a neighborhood gem tucked away in a strip mall that is reminiscent of times gone by.  We settled in at the bar and were warmly greeted by Kat tending bar and the local clientele.  The atmosphere was cozy and the jukebox was amazing!  We grooved to Donny Hathaway, Charlie Wilson and Sade, while sipping champagne.  We had the best time conversing with people, dancing and making new friends.  This is definitely going to be our go to place during the week from now on.  We found out that Thursdays (karaoke) and Sundays (jazz/blues) are the days to stop by.  I totally recommend this lounge for people who want to kick back some drinks and enjoy a good hang with friends.  What a great find!

This place is a fun, non pretentious little dive to grab a drink on say a week day.  Some where you'd wanna bring an old friend that you'd like to catch up with.  Good music and friendly folks, I dig it.

Have you ever experienced going into a place and then coming back out just because the place was just outright shady? I'm giving them 2 stars cause the bartender was nice but this bar is not gonna be at the top of my weekend spot to drink list. I think i'd feel more comfortable buying booze and drinking it at home. Also, what's up with the dead air? We came in on a saturday night @ 11-ish and not a soul around. I really felt bad that we had to come back out but what the heck?

Hooked up with my Ex here two years ago after the bartender made a drank he affectionately called, "git'er done".

...since then I haven't been back since they didn't allow me in a few months ago because I didn't have the proper footwear (I don't own a sports shoe)

Kudos to them for keeping my pale skinned a** out. Seriously.

Lisa is no longer the entertainment coordinator on Thursdays.  Patty along with Don are running the karaoke now.  Patty, who sings fantastically, does a great job at operating the karaoke as well. Going just to hear her sing is worth a visit in itself.

I enjoy Blue Note Lounge from time to time. During the week, things are slow and laid-back with a healthy does of rich R&B ranging from the contemporary to classics of the 70's and 80's. Kat will greet you kindly as you step up to the bar and ask you watcha havin'. The denizens of this bar  lean mostly toward the older crowd but draws in youth as well. On one of their two televisions, you'll find a game, or news, or some other type of programming -- it's just your neighborhood bar. The bar is typically dimly lit and between that that, the laid-back crowd, and the music, it makes for a great place to curl up with a date and work her in to the mood --

not that I've ever tried that, of course.

Note that on the weekend, the dynamic changes completely. Very crowded, faster-paced music, and a cover charge.

This local bar is so great. The bartenders are extreamely friendly and hilarious. Music is great and I like how they allow you to bring food in while you enjoy your beverages. A plus for clean bathrooms.

This is a great place for a low key night.  It's a small hole in wall bar that we always go to for a night cap after eating at Asiana Gardens.. and it always does the trick.  Everyone is really friendly, almost all of the other patrons somehow greet you with at least a nod... hopefully not b/c we are the only asians there... but it wouldn't matter either way since they will always get a smile out of me.  They play some really old school beats, and even if you aren't on the dance floor, you will be grooving on your seat.  Drinks are great, and the service is great.  One night we went when one of the Alize reps were there... and somehow got a free bottle.  I've never seen it overly crowded.. but if you are looking for something simple and intimate and are in the north san jose area.. this seems to do just fine.

I've only been to this bar about 4 times. I recently moved into the area and like any self respecting douche-bag looking for debauchery, I had to visit all of the local watering holes to get a "feel" for my future hangouts. This bar... quiet, dark, but charming in a seedy and relaxing kind of way. Best point about this bar? HAD to be Kat! Wonderful, fun and entertaining woman who makes one hell of a Long Island (all other reviews are totally accurate on this point). Overall, I will visit again if I'm just looking to stop by and have a drink before heading home. Might try this bar out on one of the more "packed" nights. Apparently karaoke and weekends are when it gets packed.

Went here a while ago with friends and they were not too crowed at first. It did start to pick up with a older crowd and no one was overly pushy about hitting on us or making us dance. I haven't been back but think that maybe I should try it again soon.

The Blue Note Lounge.  Where to start, where to start?  Initially, some may just have to get past the initial sight of the place before you enter.  From the outside, it's definitely not much and you just don't know what to expect when you walk through the doors.  Once you get inside though, it conjures up feelings of a good ol family reunion (in a good way).  Maybe it was just me but it took me a good 10 minutes to get used to the surroundings but after that, it was all good.  It is somewhat of an older crowd but you know what, they still know how to get down and can hold their own against other Thursday night crowds at the typical "younger" club scenes.  Patrons were fun to be around, bartender was great, drinks were strong and reasonably priced.  All in all, with good friends and a positive vibe, the BNL makes for a memorable, interesting, and a very good time.  (Kareoke night made it even more memorable...shout outs to Rommel and Moe Moe!)

I went there for my mother-in-laws 65th birthday party. It was definitely an older crowd but very fun. Trust me you will see some sights though, and have plenty of funny stories to tell your friends. Good times.

Saturday night, our plans fall in.  The club we planned to go to is at capacity.  What to do?  My friend turns to me and says "Have you ever been to the Blue Note?"  I say "No where's that?"  "Jo you have to check it out it's an 'experience.'"

It's definitely a no frills bar with a much older crowd.  But almost everyone was nice.  People were up dancing and having a good time.  They were playing a lot of old jams.

I can vouch for the Long Island that's what I had.  Whew I was so used to the watered down drinks you get at a club those drinks were strong...thanks Kat!  We had a good time.

    Whats with these reviews?
If you went in based only on the other reviews you would be in for a surprise.
    CMON@!!!!
Tell it like it is!  Its a black bar.  I dont mean dark or goth I mean African American black.  Its also an older crowd.

5 stars?  Amen!  A bar is only as good as its bartender.  This place is like cheers.  You instantly become friends with the staff and youre no longer going to a bar...youre going to visit a friend.   Hi Kat!!! Hi Sharon!!!  Whats up bossman Steve!!!

Been going here for YEARS.  Even had my picture on the wall for a while.  Sip on some beer while munchin on cracklins with crystal hot sauce.  It dont get much better than that.

Davids bottom line- Stiff pours, good prices, great bartenders.  Dont expect to meet a bunch of hootchies.  Hit on these ladies and they will probably punch you.

A buddy and I wanted a _quick_ beer after work yesterday, and we wanted to avoid the regular waterholes. Took a chance on the Blue Note located in the strip mall. What a wonderful surprise. People (behind and in front of the bar) were really friendly. We went on a Tuesday night so it was not crowded at all. Will make this a regular stop from now on, and to think I have worked within a mile of the place for 10 years now without knowing about it....

There are some bars where you want to get introspective at....this is one of them....

It's dark, dank and can range from lively to brooding. They have food during some afternoons. The patrons feel like they're out of central casting. You feel like you're in some place seedy (not in the land stripmalls!!!)---but it's a good feeling. It's also walking distance from the county jail so it's the perfect place for a post bail/ post jail beer.
If they're not open, the AM/PM on the other side of the parking lot will be and they sell beer there too.
    Yes I just typed that.
