I often stop by Bombs for a quick lunch during the work week. Parking isn't great since it's on Monroe, but the delicious food and drinks more than make up for it. Try the Mac n Cheese on their special list made with Diablo Cheddar, DELICIOUS! Friendly bartenders and servers, great food, good environment... can't go wrong.
Review Source:Bombs Away deserves an update, and unfortunately it's not going to be a move in the positive direction.
The Duck Chimichanga? Gone, as are most of the skilled-chef qualities that I used to associate with this place. Turns out, there was a change in ownership a few years back and there's not much evidence of the original business left. The food is not much more than watered down versions of "Am-Mex" cuisine.
It seems like there's still hope for Bombs as a late night hangout or an occasional music venue. Unfortunately for them, I know of a bunch of other Corvallis haunts where I'd rather spend dinner time.
Service and meals are truly bombing these days. Â Used to love the place. Â Brought a few friends and relatives here for a meal last couple of times. Â Woeful. I was actually embarrassed for the establishment. A restaurant's quality can ebb and flow based on which crew is present on a given night. Â Friday night's waiter and cook literally dropped a bomb on my family. Will wait quite awhile before coming back...hopefully the place can return to a higher standard in the near future. Â Disappointed.
Review Source:I have a bit of a bias for this place because I went there a ton in my 20's. Â I've played shows on their awesome stage, drank beer after beer after beer and have eaten more than my fair share of a cows weight in burgers. Â Love the shows, love the burgers, love the atmosphere. Â Nice job!!!!!
Review Source:Bomb's is awesome for 2 things: (1) $2.50 microbrews on Tuesday, and (2) $5 lunch menu. Since I work by this place, I take advantage of both a lot.
That's not to say that's all they're limited to. Bomb's is what I like to call faux-Mex. Not in a bad way, it's just kinda the Americanized style of Mexican food. For $5, the food's well worth it. They also have a rotating dinner menu that has a whole host of other stuff of various styles. Almost everything from there has been pretty good from my experience.
But I go more often for drinks than anything else. There's a small bar in the back, often it can be hard to find seating, but if there is, it's a nice place to hang out and drink. Bartenders are all very friendly, especially since I know most of em now, and they seem to have the same kinda rapport with a lot of customers which is always a good sign.
On a whole, great place near campus, probably one of the better places to drink in Corvallis, even if it's not really a bar, and student-friendly prices.
Some of the menu offerings at Bomb's Away are tasty, but others not so much... I love the britty salad, but the mashed potato chimichanga is something I ordered twice (complete memory lapse) and hated twice. It struck me as bland. The atmosphere is okay for crowding in with some friends for pints, but more my speed these days is a conversational lunch, for which I find the seating a bit uncomfortable. Come to think of it: when I have crowded in for pints, the beer just made it easier to ignore the cramped and awkward seating. Maybe I am just OLD.
Review Source:The drinks at Bombs are BOMB and they have awesome drink specials throughout the week. Enough beer selection to keep my beer drinking friends happy. The mixed drinks are delicious and pack a punch - probably shouldn't expect to drive after 2 drinks.
I've never had a full meal here but the chips and salsa and the nachos are tasty!
Pretty bland and uninspiring Mexican food. Â I guess that's what happens when you don't see Mexicans making the food in the back. Â Man oh man. Â You get decent deals for the lunch specials and that's when I go. Â But otherwise, I would just pass on this place. Â People seem to also like it for the music, but I'm into the metal scene and this place doesn't do it for me that way either.
Review Source:Bomb's Away Cafe is not your typical college dive bar, it has a surprisingly large menu and good rotating beer selection. Bomb's advertises itself as a Mexican restaurant, but this is misleading. It does have "Mexican" style food of taco's, burritos, and the typical rice and beans; but by far it has some of the best vegetarian food and burgers in the city. Bomb's has the BEST lunch special you can find in the city with a wide variety of items from their dinner menu but for only $5. Bomb's does have a full bar, and a decent Oregon wine selection, but if you're a beer nut, Bomb's has a good selection of hard to find regional beers.
The front restaurant portion of Bomb's is also one of the only venues for live music in Corvallis. So look for bands to typically play on Wednesday through Saturday nights with both local and national talent stopping by.
Recently tried Bomb's Away, I was quite pleased!
We ordered jalapeno fries as an app, my husband ordered a breakfast burrito, and I had the "appetizer" casado with chicken for my meal.
The fries were a little misleading, more paprika fries than jalapeno. NOT spicy at all, but they were tasty.
The Casado was way more than an appetizer, and at only $6 quite a nice dish. It was excellent, and I had the leftovers for lunch the next day. There were a lot of items on the menu that I'd like to try.
The breakfast burrito was a little bland, with too many refried beans in it. My husband liked it anyway, though I think I'd rather make my own at home with turkey bacon!
This is ideal Tex-Mex. Don't come here expecting authentic Mexican food, because you'll be sorely disappointed. Very New Mexico style menu. They have daily drink specials - Monday $6 margs, Tuesday $2.50 micros, Wednesday $2.50 wells, Thursday is long islands and Friday is...well, Friday). Bartenders pour very heavy, so you'll get plenty drunk off margs or long islands, and there's always 10-15 microbrews on tap. Gets VERY crowded on Mondays and Tuesdays though, we used to come every Tuesday but had to cut back because you end up spending the entire time waiting in line at the bar. If you're going, go EARLY (8 at the latest) and lock down a table for the night. Otherwise you end up awkwardly standing around. Limited seating area and a very hipster crowd.
Review Source:This rating's for the food only - some of the drinks looked killer and the beer is cheap. Â
I had a burrito here the other night and it was a bit of a letdown. Â It was advertised as a 'double' but what came out was rather scraggly looking and not all that appetizing. Â The chicken inside was dried out, the sauce was watery, and the rice was really bland. Â If I hadn't been starving I might've gotten a take-out box and incorporated it into my dog's diet later that night. Â
The lady had a big plate of the house nachos which were much better than my burrito. Â Maybe I just guessed wrong.
I'm a student in Corvallis, but I hail from San Jose, California. Naturally, I'm used to super authentic mexican food and I was disappointed when I came to Corvallis and the only burrito places I knew about were Qdoba or Chipotle. Which to me, are shitty chains that can't get burrito wrapping or how to prepare their rice right.
Bombs Away is different. It prides itself in cheap beer and dope food. I would walk past this place and pray that I could stumble upon a fake ID or that I could turn 21 faster because at night this place is bumping. They have really good sounding bands come through and play there at night. So one day my boyfriend and our friends decided to go try it out. They don't claim that they have authentic Mexican food, but so far this is the best I've had. The people at the register immediately gave us their 5 dollar lunch menu which includes and entree and a drink. My boyfriend got the chicken flautas, and our friends both got the blackened burger. For me, however, I was pleasently surprised to see a lot of items as vegetarian, as I am one myself. I got the wet veggie burrito. We all agreed that it was the best 5 dollars we've ever spent. The burger was served on an onion bun with a giant slice of tomato and onion. Both of them loved it. My boyfriends flautas looked like the most authentic dish and he said he'd never eaten better flautas. My burrito was by far the biggest, taking up the entire plate. And it was filling, however, I recommend asking them to put some guacamole in there because it was solely black beans, brown rice (which rocks), cheese and lettuce. A little sparse for what I'm used to. This is a great place to get 2 dollar margaritas and a 5 dollar lunch. This place was definitely all that it's cracked up to be.
Bombs Away Cafe is one of my favorite places to go in Corvallis. They have the best margaritas, and a long island that kick your butt in the morning. I like this place for going out with my friends, because the atmosphere is better than any other bars on Monroe. Â They have fun live music. The food is amazing, and there is a ton of vegetarian options. If you are planning on just drinking at bombs, make sure to order chips and salsa because they are that good.
Review Source:I love bombs.
I rag on WC pizza, so here's my chance to even the playing field. The guacamole on the west coast is FAR better than anything on the east coast.
I love the guac at bombs. I love the margaritas, the live music and the eclectic not-quite mexican menu. Easily one of my top 3 places in Corvallis.
This place seems to get more raves then it deserves. Â The food is ok and the happy hour menu is fitting but the southwestern, hippy-style Mexican food is not exactly my favorite. Â If anything is going on around campus this place is usually more busy then is worth dealing with, but on a slow night its worth at least checking out once.
Review Source:Friday Feb. 19th around 1pm
I flew up to Oregon for the wk end to be wit my gf, especially since it was her bday! She had no clue and watching her pull up on her bike into her apt parking lot was awesome. She was fumbling for her fone as i called her and was standing a few feet away! Her face was PRICELESS. After being reunited wit my love, we were very hungee. I had no idea wat i wanted to eat but needed to eat before i passed out since i didn't have breakfast or lunch yet.  I ended up getting a smothered  burrito <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic1.px.yelpcdn.com%2Fbphoto%2FlObkezbL3usxR9vTvivq4Q%2Fl&s=d8d2d84b7f235678f9a3d611f677ce164f51b3512f06dde4bc16154a75ccaf34" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://static1.px.yelpcd…</a>. The unique thing about this burrito is that you can decide what you want your burrito smothered in, the choices were: .Terminator Green Chili Stew, Chicken Gumbo, or Tortilla Soup I went for the Chicken Gumbo and it tasted awesome! I would have never thought to smother a burrito with soup! the mix of the two different flavors made for even better burrito. I will be back to try more of their dishes!
I really like Bomb's Away - the food and beer are usually spot on and the atmosphere is laid back and casual. Â The menu has the usual Mexican options but is enhanced by lots of great veggie options. Â The nightly specials are usually excellent and are often not Mexican at all. Â One warning - they are not shy on the spicy. Â The $5 week-day lunch special cannot be beat! Â Give Bomb's a chance!!
Review Source:I definitely see this place becoming a favorite of mine in Corvallis. Â Especially with the $2 microbrew nights. Â And they do have a good selection of microbrews, plus Guinness for pops who needs his Irish root beer.
I opted for a small savory tofu wet burrito from their vegetarian options. Â I love how this place has so many veggie options! Â Especially with their proteins of savory tofu, chorizo-tempeh, tofu, and beans. Â The savory tofu was delicious, and the small burrito was perfect for a light dinner.
The madre had the tortilla soup and some type of meat quesadilla. Both were pretty big portions. Â I had a bite of the tortilla soup and loved it. Â If I have a cold, this is the soup I'm going to be eating. Â The quesadilla was huge, and even though the madre swore she wasn't hungry, she couldn't help but devour it all. Â The pops had the lamb sausage breakfast burrito and loved it enough to suggest that going to this crazy "college bar" was a good idea.
It was a hit all around the family! Â Cheap dinner and $2 microbrews! What else do you need?
My husband's family, and a lot of his friends, reside in Corvallis - and I had the pleasure of eating here during my most recent visit last week.
DO NOT MISS IT if you are visiting Corvallis. The food is excellent, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. They have an impressive selection of beers on tap, and lots of great specials throughout the week. When I was there they were having a $2.00 Margarita special. Yum!
I ordered the goat cheese and spinach quesadilla - and it was to die for! Fresh and well prepared. My husband ordered the pulled pork sandwich, and it was amazing! Their house bbq sauce is some of the best I have EVER had. We also tried their potato - leek soup, and it was comforting and delicious. Definitely try it if they have it when you are there!
Spread the word - Bombs Away is some of the best, if not THE best, food in Corvallis.
Wow, Chris F. you ordered a hamburger, the only "American" food item on the menu, at a "Mexican" restaurant and were upset? Â Next time, go to Block 15, Squirrel's, or even Peacock to eat a burger, then you can write a review on one of them. You only accomplished giving Bombs a lower rating, which they don't deserve.
Review Source:I came here tonight with my friend of mine who came back from Japan finally after having her flight being rerouted and all this crazy nonsense that took her almost a day to get back to Corvallis. I didn't really feel like making dinner so I mentioned to her to get something to eat at Bombs Away since I was feeling Mex/Tex-Mex food.
It was very empty at 7pm and I had thought it was strange that their "Open" sign wasn't on but we went in anyway and seated ourselves. Our waitress greeted us asking what we would like to drink other than water. I ordered a Mango margarita and Keiko just stuck with the usual water. She wasn't feeling too hungry since she was jet lagged like crazy and ate a little bit before coming to dinner oh well it's okay. She wanted dessert instead (hey, i'm not stoppin her). The menu has a lot of variety, tex mex dishes, a half page of hamburger options with tex mex mixed in, and traditional stuff the had conjured up. Their margaritas are sooooo good and worth it! Mine came in a pint glass! woooo! (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/EWWd1bXz6NVpR9iOY0342Q?userid=wyLm8AaiqiNflGed8GsbNA">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>)
I ordered the Confit Duck enchilada Verde that was locally raised filled with corn, garlic, cliantro, red onions, tomatoes, and with a side refried beans. The enchilada was doused in green salsa and broiled cheese. MmMmM yummmm. Â Keiko had ordered the Bread pudding with caramel sauce and that looked pretty good. Unfortunately I wasn't able to snap a photo of the bread pudding since she just dove right in. I thought it was funny but she thinks I'm weird that I document what I eat. Oh wellll. My stomach was happily full after tasting the delicious duck enchilada. The flavors had meshed so well and I couldn't really find anything wrong with it besides the refried beans drying up a bit after I finished my enchilada.
The only downside to this was that they had a solo performer but there was only about 8 people in this restaurant when she began singing. I wished they had toned the volume down, I mean this isn't a raging concert afterall.
My boyfriend and I have come up from Eugene for shows here twice. Â It is a great setting for an intimate performance. (We saw Michael Manring both times.) The most recent time we were here they had good mojitos and a good dark beer on tap which is a requirement for my boyfriend. Â The food was fine, seems to be pretty much natural and healthy. Â We had the Jalapeno poppers later and they were much better than the fake seeming ones that you get at other places. Â The bread pudding is also a winner, I had that both times we went. Â There were also interesting photos on the wall in the back room.
Review Source:I'm a local and this is one of my favorites. Â For those who think it's too spendy, go at lunch time. Â They now have a $5 menu that includes the entree and a beverage, such as coffee, iced tea, soda, etc. Â The $5 menu changes monthly and has at least a dozen items on it often including their mini-nachos (nothing mini about them), a wet vegie burrito, maybe a pork burrito, or tacos or their awesome vegie tamales. Â Often the smaller entrees come with rice or beans on the side. Â Really I think this is the best deal for lunch on Monroe. Â I always feel satisfied when I eat here.
The regular menu is mostly tex-mex meets Oregon with some other savory cuisines thrown in. Â I really like it because the owner is dedicated to using local humanely raised animals, safe-caught fish and to offering a decent number of vegetarian options. Â He makes a killer hot sauce you'll find on every table (well, most of the time).
The venue is kind of shabby. Â I think the late night college party crowd is hard on the place. Â Oh well. Â They do have some 10 PM happy hour deals. And they have a decent tequila selection. Â They frequently have live music of various styles, mostly energetic.
My boyfriend and I paid a brief visit to Corvallis recently -- I'm a Beaver alum and I wanted to show him some of my old haunts. We ended up somewhat arbitrarily deciding to pay a visit to the Bombs Away Cafe, though I never visited the place much as a college student, finding it a bit on the overpriced-and-mediocre side.
Turns out the menu has changed dramatically -- and strangely. While there is a huge expansion of tasty vegetarian options, there are also a few Cajun dishes at this mostly-Mexican restaurant. None of us ended up ordering in that direction. I was pretty happy with my tempeh-chorizo burrito (which wasn't quite what I was in the mood for, but I was happy to try) and I think my boyfriend and our friend were pretty happy with what they ordered. The place would get another star if the waitress hadn't seemed both a little clueless and a little irritated when my friend asked her about vegan options. It's not THAT crazy a question when your vegetarian menu is a whole page long, and if you work in a restaurant in a West Coast college town, you ought to at least know what the word "vegan" means, amiright?
