A few months ago the ownership of BHR changed. Â I am happy to say that the quality and service has not. Â The staff and servers are kind and there seems to be a genuine desire for your to have a great experience. The Brick Chicken is amazing and the Chocolate Pot dessert in it self is reason to stop by. Â A little bit of England in Petersburg.
Review Source:This place has it all. Â Great atmosphere, history, good food, good beer and great service. Â However, Â the menu is very limited so picky eaters might have a hard time finding something.
The chicken pot pie is outstanding and the sheppards pie even better. Â The fish and chips are authentic and the burger is everything they promise.
The only thing I don't like about Brickhouse is the smell of the oil burning stove, but you do get used to it. Â Or, just have another beer!
My boo and I went to this place to celebrate St Patrick's day...umm corn beef and cabbage who can go wrong with that...what at disappointment, they took a long time to help us. The place is old with a funny smell but oh well everything in Virginia is old. Customer was ok but the food wasn't good at all. Don't waste your time and go some place else.
Review Source:The BR was my second choice after Andrade's but the latter was inexplicably closed the day after Hurricane Sandy passed by. Â Poor decision by Andrade's as I will come here again to sample more fare. Â The Welsh Rarebit was most excellent--I was tempted to ask for more bread to sop up what was left on my plate. Â The portion is enough to be a light meal if you choose to make it so. Â I usually judge English-themed pubs on there bangers and mash or fish and chips. Â I chose the F&C--it rated 2-3 stars. Â The fries were avg and I asked for the seasonal veggies instead of the peas that usually come with it. Â The veggies were so good I actually ate the squash too, because it didn't taste like squash usually does. Â Also opted to try the pumpikin creme brulee. Â The pumpkin part was very tasty though not set up well. Â The glazed sugar was thin and the taste was a little off even though it was not burned. Â If not for the Fish--i'd've given it the full 5 stars. Â Next time I'll try the bangers and mash. Â Forgot to check if it has a real dartboard.
Review Source:About all I can say is "Eh" [shrugs] it's OK.....there's nothing terribly wrong with the service, the food was served beautifully, but the flavor and cooking technique was mediocre at best. Â Maybe we were there on an off night, but whoever was in the back wasn't much of a chef, more like a journeyman cook. Â Maybe we will try again, maybe not......we just weren't that impressed.......maybe the decor and location creates the buzz and and bumps up the rating......
Review Source:So I just moved to the area and this was one of the first places I tried. The food was really good. I few traditional dishes and then just some darn good eats. The drink choices here are comprised of a lot of regional beers which I'm having a blast trying out. I have been back a couple times and plan to keep returning because its a casual and friendly atmosphere with great food and good drinks.
Review Source:Another trip to Virginia's heartland (Petersburg this time) and another pondering why Northern Virginia has none of the colorful restaurants found in Richmond, Charlottesville, Staunton, and now Petersburg. Â Blame the uninspiring, easily gratified (Starbucks, CakeLove, Cheesecake Factory), easily distracted, corporate loving military / lawyer / Government faction in northern Virginia for the lack of interesting bars and restaurants ....but I digress. Â Â This is a pure British pub. Â And if you think a place like Union Jack's (complete with the mechanical bullshit) is a British pub, no hope for you.
We didn't eat here but were greeted by the friendlist pub owner (American, but he lived in England for a while) you can conjure up. Â A very chatty bar tender, some great English (as well as Irish and American craft) brews on tap and in cans and bottles. Â I can't imagine a better place for downtown Petersburg residents to hang out in the upcoming cold winter. Â Who knew Petersburg could be so hip?
The Brick is a classic Petersburg success story: outstanding cuisine meets authentic characters for an absolute top quality experience. Â The challenge of turning British cuisine (generally considered to merit 3 stars at best) into fine dining is considerable. Â But like Churchill opposing the krauts, the staff here are filled with resolute determination as they turn staples such as Shepard's Pie and Fish & Chips into inspirational standouts. Â I have never had a bad meal here in probably 100+ visits.
People who are not from Petersburg may not be aware that the Brick was a cornerstone of the Great Reformation of Petersburg that took place from the late nineties to about 2008. Â Legendary bartender Johnny $ helped bring a loyal clientele back into the bar over and over. Â This was during the smoking days, but the Brickhouse no longer reeks of putrid smoke. Â Thank goodness, because I love the new smoke-free Brick, and I no longer have to wrestle with the question of whether to enjoy the company in spike of the stench.
The menu features an ever-evolving variety of dishes that lean heavily towards the best of the UK while maintaining a certain Southern flair that is driven by fresh ingredients from local sources. Â The secret weapon behind their success is the chef's support crew, which include at least two very dedicated long-time employees, Ritchie and Leroy. Â They help turn out some inspired entrees, and regulars know how much value they add to the team. Â The waitstaff includes a few standouts. Â Should you be lucky enough to draw Steffie, Carrie, Tyrreal, or one of the other standouts, you are in luck. Â Even the least of their waiters and waitresses are competent.
The prices here are reasonable and fit within the local market. Â The setting on a cobblestone alley as well as the ambiance and decor conjure up a British pub, and any expats in the area will usually find their way here for a pint. Â Their monthly quiz night is a lively and popular diversion for the cerebrally stimulated Olde Town set. Â Best of all, their weekly burgers (every Wednesday) are notable for their quality and variety. Â Many varieties of fine beer on tap including cask-conditioned ale. Â The lower dining room is a great location for a date, as it is relatively quiet. Â They have catered parties for us and provided phenomenal value at reasonable rates.
I've been to this pub a few times and I'm never disappointed. Some nights it can be a bit crowded depending on when you go so you may have to wait a bit. I always suggest going early! My boyfriend and I love it. I love the decor and the atmosphere of the place. If you're looking for British style food this is the place to go! Between my boyfriend and I we've tried Sheperd's Pie, Â Bangers and Mash, and the fish n chips. I suggest the Bangers and Mash!
Review Source:I love this restaurant. Â The decor, the ambiance, and the food was just perfect.
My friend and I had a great time chatting and eating and we didn't feel rushed to pay and leave. Â The staff gave us enough space but didn't make us feel neglected and they were friendly.
I ordered Chicken Divan which is "A Casserole of Boneless Chicken and Broccoli, topped with a Creamy Curried Sauce, Cheddar Cheese and Panko Bread Crumbs, served with Rice"
and Ori ordered fish and chips "Beer-battered deep-fried Fresh Cod and French Fries with Peas"
They don't have an extensive menu but Brickhouse Run makes sure there's something for everybody (including a vegetarian thai dish)
bread basket before the meal had delicious bread and the coffee I had after the meal was good too. Â
My bill for the chicken, iced tea, and coffee was about $18.00 which is reasonable for the amount of serving of the food and drink.
This pub rocks. Â The fried green tomatoes when they have them are the best I have ever had. Â Make sure that you save room for the desert try the pots de chocolate. Â Most place serve this in a tiny little dish these guys serve it in a mug yes like a coffee mug. Â So order spoons all around and share this one it is the best!!! Â It will have you looking for the recipe
Review Source:A very nice atmosphere in this place, on a cobblestone alley. Â The owner and staff are very friendly and welcoming, and the food has always been good each time I've gone in. Â
The food has an English-theme to it, with Bangers and Mash and Shepherd's Pie on the small menu list. Â The food came quick, and the service was amazing. Â
It is quite a nice place to eat.
I'm very confused by all of the high ratings for this establishment. Â My honey and I came out for a nibble on St. Patty's day and were greatly disappointed. Â The ambiance is old, (um historical whatever) our table was even slopped when we sat down, which was amusing but not a big deal. Â With all of the books along the back wall I noticed some dead spiders and dust and the table looked like it could use a wiping down. Â When the bread came out it was raw. Â I mean, not a little underdone, it was RAW and inedible. Â The waitress seemed as if we were a bother or inconvenience every time we tried to flag her down (since she didn't stop back on her own), but the support staff was actually friendly. Â The corned beef and cabbage, which was a special that day due to the holiday, to me lacked any real flavor and was dry yet fatty which is a strange combination, my wife on the other hand felt that it had the unique flavor of "dirty socks" and yes that is a quote. Â Between it all we left in a hurry and will most likely not go back due to service, cleanliness and food all being a bust which is disappointing since I was looking forward to having a Cheers here in Petersburg, I guess our search continues!
Review Source:Great food, service, and atmosphere. I absolutely loved going here. I took some people from my meet up group (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.meetup.com%2FNew-In-Town-Richmond&s=63e81c98cc925283c4cac6808e7484544271978854feaa7f6430132e997fd120" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.meetup.com/Ne…</a>) there for lunch for one of our events. We had 8 people show up and it was fantastic. Everything from the baked potato to the Shepard's pie and even the humongous pork burger thing was to die for.  The service was fantastic! They were always happy and ensuring everyone, our group and the other people in the establishment) were taken care of. I would highly recommend this place to everyone. The setting is good for a quieter night with your friends at a bar or even a nice work area for a less formal lunch meeting.
Review Source:Whoo.. Â Just stopped in for a quick meal based on reviews on yelp and boy were we glad we did! Â It's burger night and also the night before Thanksgiving, so the burger was tur-duck-en. Served with bacon, gravy and cranberry sauce! Â Dee-lish-ous! Â My wife had the [huge] fish and chips which I sampled, of course, and that was very good as well. Next time you're in Petersburg, this place is well worth the stop. Highly recommended!
Review Source:This is a nice little pub/restaurant in Petersburg that tends to lean further toward "restaurant" than "pub."
Still, they know how to make a half-and-half, so that's good.
The food was THIS close to earning five stars from me. The crabcakes were delicious. The burger special (apparently available every Wednesday) was excellent. The Welsh Rarebit was a series of electrifying orgasms in my mouth (awesome imagery, right). Buuuuuuuut... the fish and chips were soggy, bland, and nasty. How can you call yourself a British joint and not know fish and chips?
The food was, as a whole, excellent. I would say that if you want a good, sit-down dinner, come here. But if you want to catch the latest football match over a few pints with your mates, head to Pennylane in Richmond.
Great place - another yelp find!
We stopped for dinner on the way back to DC from our NC furniture shopping trip. There were some good Yelp reviews so I thought we'd check it out.
I had the shepherds pie and my husband had the prosciutto chicken. both were very good. The shepherds pie was a bit different presentation than I'm used to. It had the lamb and sauce on a plate with a large dollop of mashed potatoes scooped on top and the peas on the side.
Wine list was limited but the beer selection was very good. I had a Left Hand IPA - I know nothing about beer but it was good.
Service was excellent! The waitress's enthusiasm was great!
Went for their "quiz" night on Tuesday - run by the owner. Â Also had dinner during the whole event, and made for a great "slow dinner, few beers & trivia" experience.
The bartender actually took our order, and accidentally dropped our ticket in the kitchen in the wrong spot, causing our dinner to not be prepared until an hour later. Â Obviously we made the owner aware of this and he promptly got our food started and then gave us 50% off dinner. The bartender, aside from his error, was attentive and friendly. Â
There were random British characters walking around the bar, and I got bumped by the belly of several overweight Brits throughout the course of my meal. Wtf mate? Â Suck it in.
The beer selection is good (old school british style), and so is the food.
I had the duck, which was awesome. Â Super heavy though. One buddy had the bangers and mash, and the bangers were very greasy - I think that's to be expected. Â Never had British food but I think this was a good first experience.
Great restaurants in Richmond? Â There are plenty! Â Down here around Petersburg, no so much :(
But wait....what's this? Â Down a small alley on a cobblestone street in Old Town Petersburg we find one. Â Brickhouse Run.
I've only eaten there once, but I will surely return soon. Â The food was great. Â The service was fantastic. Â I thought the prices were quite reasonable as well. Â
If you're looking for a great place to eat without having to travel to Richmond, look no further.
A surprising, delicious find in Old Towne Petersburg. Although there's a tasty selection of 'traditional' pub food (shepherd's pie, fish and chips), their higher-end, Southern-influenced entrees really shine. I had the duck with bacon vinaigrette on corncakes, and it was fantastic. The others in my party very much enjoyed the chicken breast with sweet potato and sage spoon bread and pork chop with brandied peaches. All dishes were inventive and memorable, and the live Celtic band provided the perfect background music. Will definitely return!
Review Source:I wouldn't call this an English style pub so much as a pub styled on those in England. It has the design, but the food and drink selection have a distinct Southside Virginia influence.
Not that that's a bad thing. In fact, the food is quite good and Richie prepares both unique combinations of food along with more standard fare (such as shepherd's pie).
The place is full of character (and characters) with whitewashed walls, wood bar, hops hanging in the window, and postcards from around the world. Hang out at the bar after dinner and enjoy the conversation from the exceptionally friendly locals.
Persuaded mostly by beer selection, my co-worker and I went back to The Brickhouse Run last night.
Atmosphere- 4 Stars. Nice exposed brick walls and your typical trying to be an English Pub motif and decorations. As tastefully done as it could be. Note that there are some "regulars" who can be a bit much (aka drunk and singing... at 7:45pm) at the bar... but this is easily avoided by sitting in the proper dining area.
Food- 4 Stars. This time we got crabcakes for an app, which were good albeit tiny (it is an app after all) and came with a nice mango salsa. We both got fish and chips, which were very nicely cooked with a proper thick and crunchy exterior. My only complaint would be the peas on the side, I know it's traditional but I don't care for them (and they were watery and needed some salt).
Beer Selection- 4 Stars. They had some good local beers and a few of the British pub standards. Only complaint here was that the Guinness was too warm when my coworker for a black and tan.
Service- 5 Stars. Bartender (Patrick) was friendly and personable.
Once again, Yelp saves the day (or the dinner). This was a really cool English style pub in downtown Petersburg, VA. I ordered the fish and chips and I felt like I was back in foggy London.
Another cool thing about this place, on the first Tuesday of the month, they have a "Trivia Night" to raise money for a local charity. I was sitting at the bar and got drafted onto a team. It was a hoot.
The owner, from what I heard, is a lawyer in downtown Richmond, but he and his wife have this pub and live above it. He (Steve I think) was the one running the trivia night. He came up with some tough questions.
I would have loved to stay for the remainder of the game and have a few pints, but I had to get back to work.
Give it a try if you are in the area.
We were in town on business/pleasure, ended up here on a local's recommendation, and loved it! For me it was one of the high points of my trip. I had the trout in riesling sauce and it was so good I asked for the recipe (something I never do, but this place was so friendly I went for it). Â Service was good, atmosphere pubby and nice, food great-try it if you're in Petersburg.
Review Source:Not much going on in Petersburg, but this place is pretty cool!
Guys who work at Ft. Lee come here for  a pint and some surprisingly scrumptious pub food.  My dad had bubbles and squeek and it was tasty! I got a salad with chicken on top and the chicken was pretty bland (no seasoning, i think it had been boiled?) but the rest of the salad was good. Next time I'll stick to the pub food to be safe. The bartenders and servers know the names of all the regulars and its a fun place for a drink and some food.
I took a stroll down memory lane last week when I went to Richmond to pick up some government surplus that I've been hawking on eBay (look for desert patterned assault packs and vests and you've found me!). Â Then I remembered the tall beer and sheppards pie that I had at Brickhouse Run.
I went on the recommendation of a co-worker who had lived in the Fort Lee area for over 30 years. Â I was not disappointed.
Parking is a bit hard to find - but once you've parked and gone inside, you're welcomed by a pub like environment that invites you sit and enjoy your brew. Â Service was fast for what I can recall and the food/drink came out rather quickly for such a relaxed environment.
For the food, I do remember the sheppard's pie being a tad salty - but hey, nothing to hold your water or replace your electrolytes after a good bender, eh?
