Bush's Chicken

It's hard to find a good food stop on a road trip, and we're always tempted to stay with the known quantity, no matter how unappealing it would be otherwise. You know which "restaurants" I mean.

So we drove outside our comfort zone to try this place, led by my adventurous husband. Bush's has an old-fashioned chicken menu served in modern style, with a drive-through and a small eat-in area furnished with McBooths, for those who actually want a break from the car.

My family selected meals from the various fried chicken tenders and pieced meals, served with rolls and choice of sides, aka fixin's (country fries, mashed potatoes, fried okra, corn on the cob, gravy, jalapeno poppers, pepper poppers, etc). The fried okra was especially delicious, speaking from personal experience. I don't eat chicken, but I was content with a few sides.

You can order your chicken in individual combo meals, with rolls only, or in family value combo meals that vary from a 2-piece to 15-piece or 30-tender, and for the more adventurous (or the lucky pet), they offer a liver/gizzard meal as well. I can't imagine.

There are three kids' meals, which offer a base of 2 chicken tenders, a chicken leg, or mac and cheese, and an option of a fruit cup or a cookie with a drink.

Which brings me to the drinks. Besides the usual array of sodas and various "ades," Bush's advertises their "famous iced tea" (sweet or unsweet) for .69 for a huge 32 oz. I had to read that twice to make sure, then we all ordered one. It tastes absolutely fresh-brewed, as if it's just been poured from that pot on your grandmother's stove. I drank all of mine and part of my daughter's after she fell asleep in the back seat. So the family dog and I do have a few things in common, including food thievery.  That memorable iced tea was the reason we stopped there again on the way home.

The desserts consist of cinammon apple pie or Blue Bell ice cream, served alone or in a float. Or both.

So there you go. Having a yummy stop like this on your travel map can make your journey seem a little shorter, or at least a little more interesting.
