Being a gluten-free vegan in Newport leaves me with very few options for a delicious night out. Â I have been hesitant to try Cafe Mundo, a little leery of the prices and not sure how much I would enjoy a tempeh dish cooked by someone I didn't know. Â
I'm happy to say I didn't need to worry! Â I ordered the tempeh tacos - I received three tacos overflowing with tempeh, slaw, salsa, and their vegan savory sauce. Â I was only able to finish two and had to bring the third home. Â They were flavorful and the tempeh was cooked perfectly. Â The vegan savory sauce is phenomenal (I actually asked if they sold it - the answer was yes, for $8/jar, if you call a few days ahead of time).
My boyfriend ordered the mole tacos - he remarked that the mole sauce was on the sweet side and the chicken was cooked perfectly. Â It was also packed with the chicken, mole, slaw, and salsa, meaning he also had to bring his third taco home.
Though there aren't many vegan options on the menu, I fully expect to go back to Cafe Mundo and order this dish again. Â If you're willing to spend a little extra for a fun meal I happily suggest this restaurant!
I was in Newport during that beautiful weekend in April with my boyfriend and some of his friends.  We were wandering around looking for a place for lunch and Café Mundo caught our eye - how could it not!  I really liked this place! Â
The art on the walls was colorful and fun. Â The server was knowledgeable and responsive. Â Our food was mostly delicious (aside from the overly-buttered clam chowder) and plentiful. Â My only non-chowder complaint is the how hot it was in there. Â I can't imagine this place in the summertime. Â We were all sweating by the time we left. Â I think some fans are in order.
I was psyched to try this place due to the crazy artwork adorning the walls. There is so much to look at! I love it! I even got to take a picture with a fuzzy bike I found in their outside seating area. So funny!
Now down to business.
We tried the grilled cheese sandwich and the soup of the day, which was some kind of pesto-tomato concoction.
My friend enjoyed her grilled cheese very much, and gobbled it down. It was layered with vegetables and came with a small salad.
My soup, on the other hand, was just ehh, and came with these sad looking pieces of bread slathered in butter. This was not the kind of experience I expected after I had already looked through the Yelp pictures and reviews.
Our server was nice enough, and again, I love the look and feel of the place. But that doesn't make up for blah food. But maybe I just ordered the wrong thing? I don't know. My friend really liked her grilled cheese, so maybe something else on the menu would have me writing a better review.
