Being a gluten-free vegan in Newport leaves me with very few options for a delicious night out. Â I have been hesitant to try Cafe Mundo, a little leery of the prices and not sure how much I would enjoy a tempeh dish cooked by someone I didn't know. Â
I'm happy to say I didn't need to worry! Â I ordered the tempeh tacos - I received three tacos overflowing with tempeh, slaw, salsa, and their vegan savory sauce. Â I was only able to finish two and had to bring the third home. Â They were flavorful and the tempeh was cooked perfectly. Â The vegan savory sauce is phenomenal (I actually asked if they sold it - the answer was yes, for $8/jar, if you call a few days ahead of time).
My boyfriend ordered the mole tacos - he remarked that the mole sauce was on the sweet side and the chicken was cooked perfectly. Â It was also packed with the chicken, mole, slaw, and salsa, meaning he also had to bring his third taco home.
Though there aren't many vegan options on the menu, I fully expect to go back to Cafe Mundo and order this dish again. Â If you're willing to spend a little extra for a fun meal I happily suggest this restaurant!
I was in Newport during that beautiful weekend in April with my boyfriend and some of his friends.  We were wandering around looking for a place for lunch and Café Mundo caught our eye - how could it not!  I really liked this place! Â
The art on the walls was colorful and fun. Â The server was knowledgeable and responsive. Â Our food was mostly delicious (aside from the overly-buttered clam chowder) and plentiful. Â My only non-chowder complaint is the how hot it was in there. Â I can't imagine this place in the summertime. Â We were all sweating by the time we left. Â I think some fans are in order.
I was psyched to try this place due to the crazy artwork adorning the walls. There is so much to look at! I love it! I even got to take a picture with a fuzzy bike I found in their outside seating area. So funny!
Now down to business.
We tried the grilled cheese sandwich and the soup of the day, which was some kind of pesto-tomato concoction.
My friend enjoyed her grilled cheese very much, and gobbled it down. It was layered with vegetables and came with a small salad.
My soup, on the other hand, was just ehh, and came with these sad looking pieces of bread slathered in butter. This was not the kind of experience I expected after I had already looked through the Yelp pictures and reviews.
Our server was nice enough, and again, I love the look and feel of the place. But that doesn't make up for blah food. But maybe I just ordered the wrong thing? I don't know. My friend really liked her grilled cheese, so maybe something else on the menu would have me writing a better review.
I know how terrible the coastal restaurants can be. Most of them are over priced and leave you disappointed. I had lunch with my Fiance at Cafe Mundo and we were very surprised.
It is an artsy place with a great vibe. The inside had big, beautiful plants, local art and amazing natural light. Upstairs is the main dining area. They seemed to have a few good beers on tap and some wine. We enjoyed the soup of the day and split a salmon burger. The salmon burger was not a solid piece of fish. It was ground salmon and mixed with an array of spices. The burger was served with a spring mix salad that was super fresh and delicious. I did enjoy the dish; it was simple and healthy.
I had a great time at Cafe Mundo. The quality of the food and the fun atmosphere is just what Newport needs. I was told they have an open mic night. I might return to check that out.
Happy I found this place! My girlfriends and I were hungry and our Newport local friend took us here. If it were warmer, we would have sat in the fun outdoor dining area out front. We went inside and the whole place was bright and lit up with sunlight. Went upstairs and sat down and got helped right away. Wasn't too busy, but it was almost 2pm. I had the Greek chicken pita and it was fantastic. My water was refilled frequently. Good service, fun atmosphere. GREAT for vegetarians. I recommend!
Review Source:Really great food in a unique place. Â If I could just find out how they made that savory sauce on my Greek Veggie Pita sandwich. Â To die for!! Â I'd love to try them for dinner as well. Â The outdoor seating is really funky and casual. Â I will go there again for sure. Â Good vegan or vegetarian options.
Review Source:We stumbled upon this place when my vegetarian mother-in-law was visiting last year, and we were not disappointed. I remembered my grilled cheese and soup very fondly, so we decided to stop back in for a second try.
The place is funky and artsy, although some of the pictures are hilariously weird. Someone seems to have an angry mermaid fetish, but whatever. Â This time, I had a cup of chickpea and sundried tomato pesto soup. Wow, it was delicious. I do love their fresh bread. I sort of wish I'd just gotten a bowl and skipped the rest of my meal. But, since I'd already ordered one of their chicken pitas, I did my part in stuffing my face. Failed miserably, taking most of my pita home... but it was fine even after the drive back into the valley. Their tzatziki and feta combo is delicious.
The sandwiches come with a really great fresh salad with some sort of poppyseed vinaigrette. This is not your bland iceberg side salad... the mixed greens were obviously fresh, with lots of flavor. Spousal unit had an angus burger which he declared tasty.
Folks complaining about the prices and the wait times should probably stick to McDonald's. You want freshly prepared, quality food? Go to Cafe Mundo.
Cafe Mundo is so cozy and awesome. As soon as we stepped in, I knew it was going to be a great meal. The cafe smells amazing; I can't put my finger on what it is that makes so many natural foods-type places smell so damn good, but they've got that same wafting scent of deliciousness in this place that lets you know you're in for a great meal.
Downstairs there's a counter for ordering coffee and to-go items as well as a stage and a few small tables. (Take a peak at the Oregon Skate Park table that looks like the State Park logo, complete with a few dancing bear stickers. That shit makes my life.) Upstairs is flooded in sunlight through the glass ceiling, and there are tons of tables looking over the downstairs part of the cafe. (You can kinda-sorta get an ocean view from the tables on the far side, but it's a little drafty.)
My sweetheart and I shared the coconut curry tempeh wrap and a cup of vegetable lentil soup. (We had pre-gamed on beers and fries at Rogue.) The sandwiches come with a side salad, which isn't noted on the menu-I was stoked when our food was delivered. It was a feast, with a huge wrap, generous salad, cup of soup, and two big pieces of crusty, homemade bread. Fuck yeah. The wrap was definitely the star of the show. This thing was so flavorful. The tempeh was well cooked and the coconut curry sauce was rich and wonderful. (There were also potatoes in there! Score!) The salad was also great. I'm not a salad person, but lately, every time I eat a salad (so....twice) I swear I'm going to get into them. This salad was lovely mixed greens topped with shredded carrots, cukes, tomatoes, and dressed in an amazing poppy seed dressing. The soup was only just okay; the seasoning just wasn't there and it could definitely have used some salt. The homemade bread was amazing, though.
The server was nice enough and efficient-she worked a crowded dining room all by herself and I loved watching the dumbwaiter that delivers food from the downstairs kitchen to the upstairs dining area. Rad! I do think the food is a tad overpriced, but we had such a lovely meal here that I can't dock them too much for it. This will be a regular stop for us in Newport for sure.
I like Cafe Mundo! This place has such a great vibe. Friendly, casual and fun. They have great light upstairs in the cafe and a huge outdoor patio with fire pits. There's art everywhere -- from the mosaic sink in the bathroom, the painting on the tables and the artwork hanging on the walls -- and an open invitation to create -- from the chalkboard walls to the open mic nights.
Finally had a chance to eat here and I ordered a Greek Chicken Pita for $10. Tender chunks of chicken, fresh greens and tomatoes were wrapped in a super soft pita and dressed with a garlicky feta cheese sauce and Kalamata olives. So delicious! It came with a big side salad and their signature poppyseed dressing. I also had coffee which was strong and hot.
I've been for their great open mic nights too and will definitely be back for more.
Servers are very helpful and friendly.
Menu has a nice variety including some Vegan and Veggie items.
Fresh, sustainable, local, bread made from scratch, and live music.
Tomato Pesto soup was outstanding.
Special salad with peaches and walnuts was amazing.
Decor is very interesting, be sure and check out the bathroom upstairs.
The Chicken Mole Tacos were amazing!
I definitely got there before the dinner hour because there was no one there except the staff. It was a little hard to figure out where the door was but after I bucked up the courage to walk through the creepy looking courtyard I was pleasantly surprised to find a nice looking restaurant. I feel like this place would do really well in Eugene. Very hip and eccentric.
Prices are higher than I expected but the food was great. $10 for 3 tacos, but they were nice size and filling so I'm not complaining.
Another recommendation from the locals that did no disappoint. This little restaurant is kind of hidden and looks like (from the outside) a run down house. Â When you enter though the ambiance is awesome. Downstairs is a stage and coffee shop, upstairs the restaurant. Â I was there too early for live music (which I see others have commented on) but the food was awesome. I had fish tacos and will now try to reproduce that recipe at home!
This was a great little find and I'm happy I trusted the locals when sending me there.
Delicious, and lovingly crafted food. I LOVE that they butter their homemade bread for you! Staff is sweet, don't go if you're in a rush... But you can always call to pick up! Locally owned, outfitted with neighborhood art, and a front yard that is a gem, Mundo is one of my favorite spots in town. Their offerings of beverages is outstanding- draft beer, delicious cocktails, fruit sodas, and a cafe mocha that is like liquid coffee chocolate mousse. Â The food is also very very good-my favorites are the from-scratch soups!
Review Source:Full disclosure, this was our first time eating here - we're out of towners. We heard good things from a friend and wanted to try it out. The service was brutally slow - reportedly someone didn't show for their shift and therefore one woman was left to work the upstairs herself, but it drastically affected our experience and menu prices aren't pro-rated depending on who decides to show.
Pros: The place has a casual, unique vibe. The menu has great options for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. My wife ordered the grilled fish tacos and they were very good, fresh taste and nice presentation. The beer list was good and thoughtful. I'm an oenophile as well but didn't check the wine list...
Cons: Service. It look about 30 mins for my beer to arrive, 45 for the appetizer (fruit and cheese) and well over an hour for our two entrées and one kid's pasta to show. I ordered the curry and it was a mis-step (bland and uninspired) but other dishes were nicely done.
Bottom-line, I do hope that our experience was an isolated instance, but poor service is unforgivable. Management should tighten the ship. Other folks got up and left and we should have as well. Two stars because certain aspects were very good.
This place has a great atmosphere and great food. Â The interior is light, bright and quirky. Â We always eat here when visiting Newport. The burgers are great. Â Made with organic, grass feed beef. The coffee is from a local roaster and good. The salads are made with very fresh greens. Â Definitely recommend Cafe Mundo to any one looking for a great place to eat.
Review Source:It's nice to have some veggie options when going out, and can be hard to find in most coastal towns. Â This place had some locally made tempeh.. so there was tempeh tacos and a tempeh burger on the menu. Â My husband got the tempeh tacos and I got the Mundo Salad. Â I really enjoyed my salad, but I didn't like the tempeh very much, although my husband thought it was decent. Â I would rather have lentils with taco seasoning or something on the tacos! Â I guess I'm just spoiled, being from the Portland area. Â I would go back if I was in the area and needed to, but wouldn't seek it out again. Â I thought the service was pretty good and friendly.. those gals were workin' hard! Â I liked the ambiance, and the live music was great.
Review Source:Disappointing is the word that first comes to mind. Â Our grilled cheese sandwiches were alright (although only cheddar, not the 4 cheese sandwich they advertise in the local dining guide), but the kitchen was SLOW that day - we waited an hour to get two grilled cheese sandwiches and a bowl of soup.
This is a funky little place and reminds us of Eugene in it's quirkiness, but we'll not be coming here again.
Update: we were contacted by the owner after this review was posted with a personal apology for our experience. Â There are apparently two grilled cheese sandwiches offered, the 'plain' cheddar grilled cheese and a 'cheese of the world' sandwich. Â We didn't see the latter on the menu that afternoon, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this - perhaps we simply overlooked it? Â I'm also raising my star rating as our experience could have been the result of a 'bad day in the kitchen' and it's not really fair to give a one star review based on a single visit.
This hip little joint is a favorite of mine. Â I spent one Halloween there and there was a live performance of fire dancers, tons of folks in creative costumes, sushi on the menu, and a feta dip that made me come back for more many times. Â Great joint if you want to eat outside in the evening as you get to stoke your own fire and grab a seat nearby.
Review Source:Very hip place, with live music most nights. Â Lots of choices for food, with nightly specials and great desserts. Â Tacos, portabello burger and mezza plate are delish! Â Chai is SUPER yummy, but not mainstream so if you like that sweetish milk tea most places give you, be aware this chai is very peppery. Â Definitely a favorite place in Nye Beach!
Review Source:Super eclectic and fantastic! The food comes up on a creaky dumb waiter and there is a lot to look at here. The outside patio looks fantastic for a morning coffee, it was drizzly and cold so I opted for indoors. I ordered the chicken mole tacos because they were out of the Carne Asada. It was a sweeter mole sauce then I prefer but the jalapeno cilantro purée really complemented it very well and helped to cut the sweetness.  The shells are pan fried so the edges are crispy but the rest of the shell is pliable enough to hold the goods.  I can't wait to come back and try the Carne asada version!
Review Source:Cafe Mundo turned out to be a hidden gem while visiting Newport. The ambiance is great- funky and eclectic with mismatched decor and exactly how I like things: offbeat!
The food was delicious. We started with the Mezza plate and the roasted garlic. Ok, garlic was to die for with the deal only sweetened by some fab balsamic. Delicious, although maybe the bread to garlic ratio was slightly off (read: add more yummy garlic!). The Mezza plate was really good too: the baba ghanoush was the highlight, but the hummus was definitely tasty as well.
Portions are huge; so huge in fact, I was barely able to eat my entree, the special grilled cheese. Now, personally I am not a fan of pan-fried Parmesan outer-crusted sammies; however, i ain't complaining. It was awesome, and the side salad with poppyseed dressing was a great compliment to the greasy sandwich. The dressing is so good, I bought a pint to take home for only $5. My sweetie had a tempeh bento bowl. He wasn't wowed by the homemade tempeh, but he seemed quite happy by the rest of the bowl which was also ginormous.
The other excellent aspect about this place: the outdoor garden/play area where my kids had a ball playing with other kids, climbing trees, jumping off a neat stage, swinging from ropes etc. How cool is it to sit inside with my honey, drinking some yummy microbrews, listening to jammin' live music while my kids are off on their own, having their own blast (safely)? This is the first time we've had opportunity for something like that and we all benefited.
Overall, this place had a wonderful, magical sort of atmosphere. It's artsy boho-chic for sure, maybe a little pricey, but we had such a nice time that it was worth it. The waitress and food rocked, and that plus the chill vibe will bring me back again!
Cafe Mundo was great...
It had a cool kookie feel with a nice out door area... Â chalk board walls... up stairs bar and down stairs coffee shop...
I came for lunch and had a grilled cheese sandwich, side of bacon, and a great white beer with a garnish of orange....
The grilled cheese well exceeded my expectations... It had a nice unique thick bread that took it to the next level.... Â The bacon was perfect... and the beer was a excellent refreshing beer for a nice sunny afternoon...
The waitress was very friendly and gave us great service...
Â
I look forward to coming back to Cafe Mundo the next time I am in Newport
It was delightful eating here. Its a little artsy, funky, and fun, the food was great! The first time I've ever liked babaganousch. Â There was also a four cheese grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes that should probably be illegal because it is so good (comes with salad). Plus there was a jazzy type band with a stand up bass that was very romantic. Â Oh yeah, it was Valentine's weekend and so it being hard to find a seat may have been because of that, but I doubt it.
I thought the service was just fine and even if it were mediocre the quality and freshness of the food would have most certainly overcome that in my mind. Â Frankly Newport doesn't have many good choices for dinner so if your searching, stop.
My wife and I stay in Newport a couple of times each year. When we go, we eat most of our meals at Cafe Mundo. Their menu fits our lifestyle perfectly. Fresh food, vegetarian offerings, and great beer. They've had live music a number of times when we've been there. Some bluegrass or blues last couple of times if I remember right.
Anyway, service was fine and the food was great. It's been a while, but I remember the grilled tomato and cheese sandwich was good and so was the squash soup. Check it out.
Noticed cafe while walking by. Â The place looked interesting and was intrigued and went inside. Once inside we noticed that nobody was around except the cook, after reading a sign directing us, we went upstairs.
I ordered a beer and a Latte. Then we waited, and waited after about 5 minutes, I was handed my beer. Â Then we waited for the latte, and waited and waited. I went up and asked about it after about 10 minutes and the women behind the bar said that they were getting it. Ugh, nothing like a little attitude from behind the bar.
About 5 minutes later we got our Latte. Can I take my tip back?
This place seems okay, but we could do with out the attitude that we got. Â Coming from Portland, we usually like the quaint little shops on the coast with friendly people, but this place felt like we were in some snobby coffee shop back home.
This is THE place in Nye Beach. The nightlife scene doesn't get much better than this. Come here and enjoy fun live music most nights of the week. Depending on the band, the place can get packed out and the vibe is warm, friendly and energetic. Plus, the crowd is usually a good mix of young and old alike and I appreciate a place than can attract folks from all walks of life.
When I was there they had Ninkasi on tap so I can't complain about the beer selection. Several of their mixed drinks are made with some pretty quality alcohol and their drink pricing is very reasonable...especially when you consider what you'd pay in the city for the same beverage.
I've eaten here twice and thought the food was decent. It was not the most phenomenal meals I've ever had but the varied menu made it really nice for a group of my friends who ranged from carnivorous to vegan.
Their outdoor seating is amazing as well. Several of the tables have fire pits in them and when the music is playing inside, its fun to sit out in the dusk and listen from a distance. Plenty of dark corners for cuddling with your sweetheart as well.
Stumbled upon this place randomly. I loved it!
My friend and I were from out of town and were looking for a glass of wine and a cool place to sit. Â We got more than that.
We had our wine and ordered a hummus plate. Yum!
After a while we were pleasantly surprised with live music downstairs!
The decor was bohemian and unique. I wish we had a place like it back home.
Not to mention, my friend and I noticed that they seemed to be very "green". They also use a dumbwaiter to bring their food to the second floor! Â Cool!
Needless to say, we're going back tomorrow morning for coffee and breakfast.
5 stars!
Argh. Â The hipster quasi-veggie in me wanted so much to love this place, with its quirky decor and welcoming feel. Â Went there at lunchtime, and the place was empty, but we figured it was probably more of an evening place. Â Wait staff was friendly and fast, so off to a good start... menu looks good, lots of fresh veggie choices, reasonably priced at $9-10 an entree. Â
Then, I ordered the tempeh burger. Â BIG mistake. Â It was gross. Â Not just 'bland gross,' but 'there's something distinctly unpleasant about this taste' gross. Â I had a few bites, and ate the side salad instead, which I suppose was quite good, but didn't fill me up at all. Â I didn't want to be rude to the waitress, so when she asked if I wanted a box to wrap it up, I just said "no thanks." Â Then she asked if there was something wrong with it, and I replied that it wasn't quite right. Â Well, most other places that want your business will comp it or offer to get you something else, but instead I found myself shelling out for something I didn't even eat! Â Not very pleased. Â If you don't order the tempeh burger, you might have a better experience.
Easily some of the best food I have ever had in Nye Beach. Â Between the great food and the atmosphere, this is definately worth a trip. Â I had the chicken mole tacos, and they were perfect. Â Coffee and the music was perfect as well. Â The chef definitely puts care into each plate that she puts out. Â
My only complaint would be that they only have 3 beers on tap and they aren't very good.
Okay, it takes forever to get your food here but it's worth every minute of agonizing hunger. Owner and head chef Laurie Card rocks this place like no other--I will drive to the coast just to have dinner and listen to the amazing, and free, nightly music.
Between the fabulously fresh and tasty food (seared ahi, the Selena's salad, and chocolate ganash tart all blew my mind the last time I was there), brilliant art, communty hub feel, and groovy tunes, Cafe Mundo is a huge part of what makes Nye Beach something more than a kitschy tourist trap. If you want normal, go to Moe's, if you want ecclectic go to Mundo--just don't go starving... good food takes time.
