Went the Sunday before Memorial Day 2013 to sit on the deck and listen to music (Tiki bar portion of the restaurant). Â My previous experiences were in the 4-star range for this location of Calhoun's, which is the only reason I'm giving a 3-star rating this time rather than the 1-star it deserved (my best attempt to give a fair average score).
We sat ungreeted for about ten minutes before someone stopped to get our drink order. Â Five more minutes passed before we got those drinks and she went to look for whoever our server was supposed to be. Â Five or ten more minutes passed and she ended up coming back to take our order herself. Â Luckily, the food was out in a reasonable amount of time (we were STARVING by this point). Â Food was great, thankfully, even thought the deck has a limited menu. Â But we practically had to send the search team out to find our server to take our money so we could leave. Â
While the two neighboring tables received (and complained about) the same poor service, the manager never bothered to apologize (even though he delivered our food). Â I felt bad for the poor server. Â She was obviously the only staff member "working" that night.
One of the ways I judge service at a restaurant is how long it takes the staff to clear the table of dirty plates after I am done eating. This was a remarkable example, so I had to write.
Service is horrible. Countless busboys and waitresses buzzed by, ignoring our veritable mountain of dirty dishes. (I counted 32.) We just sat there, staring at each other and the pile of dishes, for over 25 minutes. We are on a date, dressed up, thinking "well, this is awkward."
Then they ask if we want dessert or coffee!? Really? Oh yeah, just put it right here on this greasy plate:)
Can't beat the ambience, especially the porch seating overlooking the marina. Â Ribs are well known around here for excellent quality and taste. Â Try their corn pudding and fried green tomatoes. Â Service is always excellent. Â On Fridays they have a buffet lunch that is amazing. Â Call ahead seating is recommended.
Review Source:If I had to describe this location of Calhoun's, the word I'd use is 'meh'.
Calhoun's prides itself on its barbecue, and particularly its ribs. Â The ribs I've had there on multiple occasions have been tough and relatively bland tasting.
The service was pretty attentive when I was there.
I would strongly recommend skipping the buffet they serve during lunch. Â It's pretty horrible.
We have been here several times. Â Each time, service is fair. Â The food is fair. Â The atmosphere is good. Â We always see people we know. Â But it just doesn't seem "Great". The restrooms are always dirty. Â The food is never wonderful or served hot. Â Our drinks are never refilled early enough. Â Our food seems over priced for the quality and quantity. Â Just don't know why we keep going back!
