Someone, (owners) stopped caring about this bar a long time ago. If not that then, they have no business  being in the bar business. A cocky owner apparently gave the business to who I can only assume is a daughter or other family member who shares the same last name. Doesn't matter who owns this place now, it's still the same ran down-beat up place it's been for 20 years that I know of.
The California Brew Haus is a great place for the common drunk who on occasion gets violent and doesn't want the cops called on them. A place where the drunk can get 'his drink on' without the bartender/owner telling him he's had enough. Maybe that's because the bar owner(s) are getting drunk with them so why call the cops and ruin the party? There's dives and there's dumps; both being at the bottom while dump being the worst, The Cali Brew Haus is a dump in disguise as a dive.
This bar a definite "DO NOT GO TO" place for me. The decor is ridiculously out dated. They use six pack cases as decor, one by one-brand by brand in a row stapled & nailed to the ceiling borders. If only the dust could speak, its evident it's been there long enough to tell tales that would keep most of us away.
Advising you to not eat there should go without saying but why not, I've come this far..My guests and and myself were all ill shortly after our evening out. The next morning, all of us were calling each other asking if any of us were sick, only to share our stories of barfing up sea food and chicken. Gross, I know. Luckily no one ended up in the hospital from food poisoning but for me, that was close enough to know better to not eat there and you know what? We should have known better by how disgusting the place is.
The place is a disappointing experience and I do not recommend this place to anyone who has class and wants a good time. Thanks for reading.
I'm a Rochester native and stopped by the Brew Haus on a weeknight for drinks w/ a few friends the other evening.
In effort to not bore you with my personal life  ;) my observations and impressions were as follows:
it IS a dive, I like dives....
The Positives....
- very LARGE selection of bottle beers
- friendly bartender (the 40th anniversary of the bar is in October)
- lots of room, two stages, several billiards tables, jukebox
- large patio
- lobster night (we have steak nights in Houston)
- relatively decent washroom (women's)
- crowd seemed very mixed, I don't know much about the demographic of that location / other bar choices... etc.
Neutral
- some of the (from what I gather) regulars (read, intoxicated 21 year olds trying to flirt), needed to be polity asked to leave my group of girls alone
(which is expected in clubs and bars when you're as cute as we are, hahaha)
The Negative
-liquor selection was minimal, but not bad, just minimal.
If I lived in Rochester, I'd prob make this a bit of a regular joint!
Conclusion:
4 stars because I wasn't blown away by anything (except the bottle beer selection was PRETTY DARN DECENT) and seeing as I'm only a native and not currently living there, I'm not too sure that it's a 'good as it gets.' Maybe after a few more visits I will have a better idea ;)
