    Super nice bartender.

It was clear that we weren't locals and didn't really "fit in".  But the bartender treated us like she had known us for years.

They have a back patio area, stage with live music and good prices!

Don't half step.  Bring cash for their great juke box.

This place rocks! We are from San Jose and came up to stay at the Powers Mansion B&B (wrote a seperate review). Originally we were going to the brewhouses and restaurants, but we spotted this place from across the street. Finally a fun dive bar!! Coors light was $3.50 and pina coladas were $4, can't beat that. Sarah the bartender is fucking awesome! The entire staff is great and at around 9:30 a dj came on and he played anything and everything. Everyone there made you feel at home. We are definitely be stopping by this place on our way to reno.

    Worst experience!

Laid back Older bar. Sounds nice right?!thats what we thought..turns out they dont like new comers here. At LEAST not younger ones!! And watch what you play on the juke box as not everyone is tolerant to all music and you may be bitched out for your choice..

Came here with my younger brother (he 22 I 24yo girl..) and a couple friends while I was visiting family (family lives in auburn I moved away a few years ago). I am not big on bars and have only been to a handful, this is the only BAD experience. Actually this is the only review ive ever wrote!

The "bouncer" and his wife (the bar tender) we're completely irrational and offensive with how they treated us.

Bouncer (who was twise my brothers age) for some reason started provoking him, getting confrontational when he didn't want to play a game of pool for $20.. My brother, who didnt START the drama, got pissed and asked the guy what his problem was. Was going to be a fight so I got between them and he knocked my drink out of my hand witch only made my bro more mad. They kicked us out and made him look like a foolish trouble maker when all we wanted to do was have a good time and catch up. I was honestly SHOCKED!! Im a fair and understanding person and i can say we didnt do ANYTHING wrong. They (obviously) just didn't want us there for whatever reason.. Even after a few months I still feel upset about the way we were treated..there is NO EXCUSE :(:(

    F califorina club!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well-worn bar in downtown Auburn. Two pool tables and a little stage for live music.

California Club is a great dive bar: unpretentious and casual. They have TVs, pool tables, jukebox, little stage for bands, outdoor patio for smoking while drinking, and the funny bartendress was cracking us up as she joked with the regulars. And I was oddly amused by the dollar amount for shots written on each liquor bottle (see the pic. My 2 cents: avoid a hangover, stay away from anything below $3). It's a great bar for a cold drink and an off-color joke.

I don't frequent Auburn too often, but a decent bar close to the highway worth stopping by if you want a drink.

There's also a stage for live music, pool table, plenty of TVs and back patio to smoke. Bartenders are neither nice or mean.

Our regular stop on the way to Tahoe... always down home service with a smile. Great pool tables, clean smoking patio for those in need.

This is a regular stop for us on frequent trips to Reno & I have to say I'm really suprised by all the negative reviews. On our last stop the bartender graciously served me several glasses of ice water (very hot day on the motorcycle) and only one cocktail. The smoking area out back is great, you can bring your drinks out with you. Patrons & Bartenders are always friendly and this will continue to be a favorite pitstop on our travels!

First and foremost, this is a dive bar.   There are some reviews here from people who obviously have been in their ivory tower too long and just need to stay up there.  It's a bar.  You will be carded and on busy nights there will probably be a bouncer.  Instead of whining about being carded or not having your ID, consider it a compliment and that they are just doing their jobs so they can stay in business.  ATF has all sorts of sneaky ways to bust these guys so just shut up and show your ID so they can pour you a drink.

Sorry... rant over, review coming up.

Yes... it's a dive bar.  There are no waiters.  There isn't a coat check.  No valet parking.  If you come in expecting to be waited on hand and foot, you will be disappointed at best.  At worst you will be ignored, laughed at, or generally made to feel uncomfortable.

The bartenders are not there to be your best friend.  They are there to pour you a drink and that's about it.  The clientele is a bit of a mixed bag.  It's a hangout bar and middle class people with kids at home are not going to be chilling here after work until midnight.  There are often people smoking outside and the boys can get a little loud but I don't think I've even felt unsafe or threatened.

There is a digital jukebox (which is often too loud as most nights the bar is pretty quiet) and a couple of pool tables.  I think there's a dart board as well.  On the weekends they often have a live band on their small stage.  It can get quite loud and very rowdy in their on these nights.  There's a small patio area out back but it's often full of smokers.  Bathrooms are small and a bit worn but serviceable enough.

I'd go here again and I'd recommend you go as well if you are looking for a place to grab a drink and just hang out for a bit.  If you want high class and a bit more friendly atmosphere head across the street to the Auburn Alehouse.

AND BRING YOUR ID... IT'S A BAR!

We always drop in at the California club when we ride to Auburn - and the decision to stay is dependent on who is behind the bar....however, I would have to agree with the "rude bartender" review..she is always just a old crotchety snot..if you are a lady you are pretty much screwed if you are half way attractive as the bar is always lined with the haters..with that said..our fondest memory is dropping in for a game or two of pool with friends of ours, dropped a few bucks in the newly installed juke box mounted on the wall..and whoa..the bartender (hag) did not approve of our music selection, so down went the volume..she actually refused to turn it up and refunded our money, to include the money we had put into the pool table...so out the door we go..moving forward about two months we were in Shooters (Reno) during our yearly Street Vibe run and someone kept buying our drinks..it turned out to be one of the nicer regulars from the California Club who happened to witness our moment with the bartender and felt bad becuse we looked like we were having such a good time.  She told us that the bartender was mad because she did not approve of our music selection and of how my wife and her friend were "provocatively" bending over the pool table.

a perfect example of a good ol fashioned dive bar!

    filmy bar top... check

    crusty bartender... check

sloppy drunk patrons at 6pm... check

almost witnessing an arm wrestling match... check

cheezy stage with pseudo band paraphernalia... check

    inexpensively stiff drinks... check

you bet your ass i'll be back if and when in town again!

Not that anyone who works at The California Club would be reading this...but I will never step foot in this establishment again.  Frankly, we should've known better from our first negative experience more than 5 years ago.  Looks like things don't change much around there.  The bartender (woman) was rude from the moment we walked in the door.

We were excited to have a drink after the wine and food festival with longtime friends and go to an actual bar, being that the kids were at home.  She decided to card us (flattering yes, but ultimately annoying) after we were deciding what to order.  One friend didn't have her ID, which I understand the bartender should check...however, when you are 36 and obvisiously don't look under 21, it is a bit overkill.  I am pretty sure she carded everyone just because she didn't want us in there.  Why?  Not sure...maybe we didn't fit in with the clientele at the time.  She then prompltly rolled her eyes at us when we tried to make a joke and walked away and sputtered some rude comment at the same time.  We were nothing  but nice from the beginning, so this is unacceptable.  I can forgive the whole ID thing but not the intentions rude behavior to customers.

Anyhow, needless to say, I will pick a retaurant in Old Town any day over the dirty California Club.

Ahhh this is the last dive bar in old town Auburn. I have gone here many times and had a lot of great times. Although when I think about it, I think I almost got in more fights at this bar than any bar I have been to in my life. I am not talking raging hormone I just turned 21 kind of fight. I am talking like 45 year old raging alcoholic kind of fights. But like all bars a lot of shit gets talked but the next thing you know they are buying you a drink when you show them you aren't going to take any shit. Anyway, this is not a date bar like Kellan says unless you got a mountain mama who's gonna save your ass when you get in trouble....
