I am re-reviewing Canoe, just over a year after my first Canoe review. Say that three times fast.
We went to dinner here on June 29th. Our server was Angela. The place was busy; we waited about 20 minutes for a table. Â We were quoted 20 minutes so no problems there.
We had an unremarkable toasted shrimp appetizer with an unremarkable drizzle on the bottom of the plate. I'd say that was skippable and I have had better.
On to the entrees. We ordered two brand new menu items. I had the cajun scallop and shrimp under a tomato risotto. My company had the T.N.E. pasta. Â The entrees came out very quickly and were served piping hot. Â The TNE pasta was enough for two complete meals. Â I have to say the Scallop and shrimp dish I had was one of the best sit down meals I have had in a long time. Â I loved it. Â It had a nice kick to it, with a crispy light crust.
For dessert, we split caramel and cinnamon drizzled fried dough, topped with ice cream, whipped cream dollop and blueberries. It was out of this world. Â I cant wait to visit Canoe again.
Found this restaurant via mobile Yelp app while coming back from a hike in the White Mtns. Â Nice find! Â It was hard to land on a dinner entree because there were so many appealing options. Â I decided on the cajun scallops and shrimp on a bed of risotto and my date had the canoe tips (steak) and substituted asparagus for green beans that normally came with it. Â
I tasted his dish, as well as eating mine. Â Both were absolutely delicious.
Oh, and I ordered a bloody mary which was sooooo good. Â Ok, maybe everything was better because we were starved and thirsty from our 12 mile hike. Â Naw... it was great regardless and not a morsel was left on our plates.
Loved, loved, loved the food and our server was gracious and there when we needed her.
Been here many times for lunch and dinner. The service is good. The food and drinks never disappoint. The burgers and any seafood dish are great, and the lobster mac and cheese is absolutely TO DIE FOR. The owner is very receptive to reviews and comments, good bad or ugly. A great quality in a manager and/or owner!
A few reasons this doesn't get 5 stars:
1) Pricey...really only go here for special occasions. A couple will easily rack up a bill of over $100 after an app, two entrees and a couple drinks.
2) Parking is always an adventure in the very cramped lot...at least they have a shuttle from a parking lot down the street when necessary.
3) It tends to get very loud.
Not adding or taking away points for this, but: Â Went there with my mom for my birthday a couple years ago. She gave me new earrings at the table, so naturally I had to immediately try them on. The restaurant was pretty much closing by the time we left. Not 5 minutes down the road, I realized one of my "old" earrings was missing....a family heirloom. I was sick, but not in total panic mode since I knew I had left it on the table and it was too late for them to be seating anyone new. I spun the car around as my mom called them up...no answer. When we got there we banged on every door and window and called some more...no answer, although there were still cars in the lot. The next morning, they did let my mom in (they weren't open yet) to look for herself and to go through the vacuum bags. No luck though...It was gone. Shame on me leaving it behind in the first place, but I can't help but question where it went.
I've been back many times since...but can't help but keep an eye out for my little long-lost earring :)
Shhh!!!!! Don't tell anyone. Â My wife and I had dinner there Friday night on a lark. Â I had been driving by this place for years. Â Little did I know that was a mistake. Â Canoe is terrific. Â Prime Rib done right, Mac and chesse with meatloaf done right. Â Service by sarah was execellent. Â I have had meals all over the country, this is as good as anything I have had anywhere.
Review Source:3.5 stars. Â Nothing really to complain about - very good American fare. Â Small, but full bar had several locals, so Rule 11 is satisfied. Â Owner is local too.
Went here for Thanksgiving. Â Basically had two meal options ($28-32 for a 3 course meal of turkey, prime rib, or combo), but some of the normal menu was offered as well. Â Food quality is supremo. Â Moist turkey, acorn squash (best I've ever had), hand-made mashed potatoes, perfect stuffing (not dry), sliced carrots, fresh green beans, and cranberry mixed with orange peel. Â The flavors really come out in the cooking and I had to believe the ingredients are fresh fresh fresh. Â You really taste it which made leftover just awesome later that evening. Â
Views are so-so. Â This is a roadside restaurant and winter is best to actually see the lake, but it's set back from the water more than I expected. Â Friendly waitstaff, but they were a little overwhelmed for the holiday even w/o the place being full. Â This is kinda like an upscale restaurant being run in a country setting. Â You're not going to have it all, but you might expect more based on the price. Â This is a splurge.
We walked to the restaurant from Quilter's Keepsakes (they recommended we go here). Â The staff was warm and friendly and we were seated quickly at a nice, quiet table. Â We each ordered a glass of wine and perused the menu. Â
I ordered the Fresh Catch Sandwich with homemade chips and slaw and my husband ordered the Ahi Tuna and a cup of soup (I think it was a clam chowder). Â The soup was fantastic. Â The tuna was cooked sushi style - to perfection and was delicious. Â The fish sandwich and chips were also amazingly wonderful. Â The cole slaw was even remarkable, in a nice, light dressing without a heavy vinegar taste. Â
Everything was perfect. Â Then the waitress offered us a dessert menu and we ordered some vanilla ice cream that was made at the local organic dairy. Â It was the best ever. Â
The views were picturesque combined with the nice warm ambiance made for a perfect lunch. Â I will certainly recommend this restaurant to any of my friends traveling to the east coast.
We went for dinner tonight. I was highly disappointed. I got the seafood scampi which I would never recommend to anyone. The scampi sauce was below par, there were only 3 prices of shrimp, there were about 10 (if that) bay scallops and only a little bit of lobster leg meat. Â I had expected more meat such as claw meat or tail meat from the lobster.
We made a dinner reservation that was not met. We wanted to be outside for 645. We were sat at 7 inside which was disappointing. Our server deserves credit, but the poor guy had the whole upper room to serve by himself.
Everyone else's meals were okay. Pasta sauce too salty and steak tips bland. We finished our meals by the time we got our second drinks
This was very disappointing. Labor day weekend I expected the manager to be walking around the resturant to greet tables as it was so busy. Sad job for a resturant, cOming from someone who works in the resturant business I will never be back here or reccomend it to anyone.
We were really looking forward to a 5 star experience given the accolades this restaurant has received from locals as well as tourists. Thursday evening was packed but the kind young lady at reception had a table available within 10 minutes. It appears you need a minimum guest count to make reservations. Good to know if you want a table on the lake side.
The menu fare was the same as " O" in Laconia, so no surprises there, but had hoped that their Southwest salad might be offered from their lunch menu. Not happening as we were advised by our very ungracious server. Apparently she (Bonnie) was not trained to smile, chat or engage with her patrons. The glass of wine never made it to our table- Maybe too many tables or some other issues?
The salmon was excellent as well as their appetizers. The food did not disappoint. Would have given this place the extra stars if the service person wasn't auditioning for Durgin park.
One of the better restaurants in the area. Â We have been there several times and like the atmosphere and the food. Â The lobster salad sandwich is very good with generous helpings of lobster. Â On other occasions we have had the steak and found that to be good as well. Â This has become our standby place when we want to go out to dinner and not be surprised with a bad meal.
One meal I would avoid is the prime rib, they are very inconsistent with how it is cooked.
Major slippage in the two years since I've been here. Â Steamers were sandy, Cioppino was mediocre, and the lobster mac & cheese, my long time favorite, was short on lobster and a bit soupy. Â Still a solid place in many respects, and the food is good, but just can't justify my prior 5 star review.
Review Source:Excellent food! The Mac and cheese everyone recommended was amazing! I was expecting a small side but it was a huge bowl. We ordered the blue cheese potato chips for an appetizer, but the portions were so large, we were almost full by the time the entrees came.
The wine list was extensive and the house wines by the glass were much better than average. Â We'll definitely go back when we're in the area.
This is my first ever  Review
At a restaurant in New Hampshire called Canoe.
My daughter and I ordered two drinks
Pomegranate martini and a Cosmo I think
A wonderful waiter, a young man named Jake
Helped to provide a good time to make
Homemade potato chips with lots of bleu cheese
Was a yummy appetizer and certain to please
Macaroni and cheese was served with some lobster
But too full to enjoy it, as stuffed as we were.
Mother's Day!
We had 6 people for 2:00 lunch, dinner.
We had the best service, I think her name was Angela, in the bar area.
Our meals were all great, no complaints. This is the first time ,in a long while that we've really enjoyed ourselves, they were delightful meals.
We were at THE RESTAURANT the night before, don't bother!
We loved it at the Canoe. Please try it! The food was delicious !
I have visited Canoe a number of times. Â Both food and service has always been consistently good. Â This place can get very busy on weekends and holidays so remember to make a reservation! If you're extra hungry try the Lobster Mac 'n' Cheese, although my favorite dish is the Salmon. Â Watch for LARGE portions!!!!!!!!!
Review Source:Our children recently hosted a surprise anniversary party for us at Canoe. The service and the food were outstanding. Â Our meals were cooked to perfection and were absolutely delicious. Â The staff was welcoming and friendly throughout the evening - so very accommodating to everyone. Â They were impressive!
The tavern room was a perfect size - very comfortable for our group of approximately 35. Â I would highly recommend Canoe for a private party or for dinner for yourselves.
I just went to the Canoe again on a monday, they had their Holiday party starting at 8:00 elsewhere and they sat me at 7:15, this is where I say Thank you... Moving on, I can't tell you how nice it is to have this place up here. The apps are ridiculously good, the entree's are great and the help is exceptional. Not sure the waiters name tonite, but he is one of the funniest / friendliest and most efficient servers I have had up in the Lakes Region or anywhere for that matter. I have also had a girl emily who seems to be top notch every time as well...so tonite Monday is $5 martini night, hell yeah. A dirty martini and a lemon drop later and you have one happy foodie!!!! Tonite I opted for the usual, flash fried oysters (UNBELIEVABLE) and pork pot stickers... oh and the server asks, would you like some siracha ? Of course I would !!! For dinner I tried the butternut squash raviolis, which was cooked in an oil base and served with pecan's and meat. Delish !!! So um yeah, that's my update and thank you CANOE for doing right in the lakes region...
Review Source:Great central NH lunch spot! My friend and I went for Lunch yesterday (Saturday) and loved the place. The calamari was excellent (it was doused with sweet and sour sauce and they also provided a side of delicious hot sauce). Literally some of the best calamari I've ever had. I had an angus burger as the entree and it was one of the best burgers I've had in NH. My friend had a steak & cheese sandwich and said it was excellent. I'd give the food 4.5 stars, but the service wasn't up to the same standard. Cool decor in the restaurant as well. We will definitely return, hopefully in summer when the patio is open!
Review Source:I LOVE this place.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting but still casual and the food is delicious. Â Anytime I hear of someone coming to this area, I recommend this restaurant.
Even though I'm sure everything is just as good, I do have a few menu favorites: always start off with the sweet and sour calamari - it has the 2 sauces on it and I love the spice of the chili paste......for meals, I always have a hard time deciding but keep going back to the lobster mac & cheese (which is my favorite but unfortunately the majority of the time I dine here, it is bathing suit season :) ), the lobster roll (it's enormous) or the lobster ravioli......i guess i like lobster.......
Unfortunately they are not right on the water but if you are out on the boat, you can call them and they will pick you up at the docks and bring you back after. Â They have a shuttle that is constantly running back and forth.
The same owners have the North End Restaurant a little further up in Moultonborough but I haven't really cared for that place the few times I've been in there. Â We always end up back at the Canoe!
Stopped here after visiting the Castle in the Clouds for lunch. Â The food and service were good, but actually a bit pricey for the value/quality.
Service was excellent, even though we arrived at the end of the lunch segment (they don't serve in the late afternoon, presumably to tool up for the dinner crowd).  I see it gets many great reviews, but  perhaps I am a bit spoiled by the cuisine of Northern Virginia.  My broiled fish was a bit dry and the cole slaw a bit soggy.
When back in Gilford, I may try it again, since decent restaurants in this part of New Hampshire seem to be spread thin.
Went to Canoe in a party of 3 adults and two children (preschool in age). Â Unbeknownst to us, we arrived at the same time as a party of over 50. Yikes, right?
But no. Â I was thrilled. We were sat immediately (20 mins in advance of our 7pm reservation. Our server (whom I believe was named Shenandoah?) was with us quickly, filling drink and appetizer orders as well as getting the kids' food in early. Â
Our food delivery was fantastic, as was the timing of our entrees after our appetizers. We tried the bruschetta and the potstickers, both of which were lovely (try dipping the breadsticks in the potsticker sauce...yum). Â For dinner, I had the braised short rib with mashed sweet potatoes and they were EXCELLENT. Â My husband had the seafood fra diavolo and pronounced it "good." Â Our table also had a steak and shrimp dinner special with the steak cooked perfectly and a pasta dish that was also good.
Thanks, Canoe, for a fabulous meal. When next in the area, we will definitely be back.
Other visitors: be warned that the parking lot fills up early in the evening. When full, you'll have to park in a church parking lot down and across the street but Canoe provides a minivan shuttle to and from the restaurant. We had no waiting for the shuttle in our visit despite the large party arriving at the restaurant!
Went here with the kids for dinner and it was okay. Â I ordered the steak tips medium well...good size portion, but only half were medium well the other just medium. Â My kids at those! Â Kids liked their kraft mac and cheese and hot dog.
Service was meh. Â The people at the hostess station were more concerned with talking amongst themselves than welcoming us on the way in or thanking us on the way out. Â Server never came to check on our food and I had to go to the bar for ketchup for my son's hot dog.
Best part of the meal was my  cold UFO Hefeweizen on a hot day!
This restaurant is great. We were in the Moultonborough, NH area a few weeks ago for a long a weekend and friends of ours that take their summer vacation Meredith every year insisted that we try Canoe for dinner. We were not disappointed, everything was excellent. First of all, I love a kids menu that offers more than hot dogs, grilled cheese and chicken tenders. Both of our kids ordered steak and loved it. I had the ravioli and could not finish it, it was so filling; my husband had a Ma-hi Ma hi special and loved it. Our appetizers and desserts were quite good as well. I would definitely go back here if we are ever in the area again.
Review Source:We normally come to the lake in the summertime. Â This is the first time I've been up here at Christmas time, and as we drove into town, we stopped at Canoe for dinner. Â Given the past dozen or so times I've enjoyed eating here, we came in with high expectations for an extraordinary meal, and Canoe didn't disappoint. Â
I decided to branch out and try something different this time. Â I asked the waitress what she thought of the risotto, and she said it was "really" good with a tone of voice that she "really" meant it. Â So I gave it a shot.
It was heavenly. Â Risotto with butternut squash, candied pecans, and a little maple syrup around the edge. Â I felt like I was having dessert for dinner. Â It was tremendously good.
I have yet to have a bad experience at Canoe. Â ALWAYS excellent service and fantastic food. Â Canoe is still our family's favorite restaurant in the region.
This is a go to place when we are visiting New Hampshire. I have never had a bad meal here. They make amazing martinis and have great food. This is the type of place where you see the food they bring out of the kitchen and immediately question your order because everything looks and is really good. Typically I get the lobster mac and cheese. They don't skimp on the lobster and they use a great mix of cheeses. It is pretty heavy though and not healthy at all but  worth it. The Ahi entree is great as well. It is seared perfectly and drizzled in a yummy wasabi sauce. They serve it with tempura vegetables. My in-laws rave about the burger.
Review Source:Just went to my annual trip last weekend. Â Trying to fit into the wedding dress next month so I didn't get my usual. Â However, I need to add another AMAZING meal to this review - the ahi tuna. Â DELISH. Â You *must* try. Â And get the wedge salad w/ their homemade blue cheese dressing. Â You won't be sorry!
BTW - did have a bite of my fiance's side of mac&cheese. Â And it is still heavenly!!! :)
I am a mom, and my main concern is having great food in a kid friendly environment. Â Canoe gets 5 stars from me since the food is AMAZING and it is kid friendly. Â This is not some snooty restaurant where you will feel uncomfortable bringing in your kids (or wearing a Sox t-shirt and shorts with flip flops). Â The atmosphere is casual but the food is gourmet, but not too gourmet for the little ones. Â The kids menu has many choices of standard kid friendly fare (chicken strips, grilled cheese, hotdog, burger, and steak). Â Both my boys INHALED (enjoyed) their cheeseburgers. Â We were never looked twice at for having kids with us (though my mother tells me they will never seat kids in the main dining room, which is fine since the other rooms are smaller and cozier).
I am not sure there is anything on the menu that is bad, but I LOVE the Lobster Mac & Cheese. Â For a couple of years I was apprehensive about ordering it (the combo sounded disgusting) but it is to die for. Â I was chomping at the bit this year to get out and get some. Â The best part is that it tastes even better as leftovers. Â My sister always enjoys their meatloaf as well.
Their only downfall is no crayons or paper for the kids to color on, but thankfully we keep a supply in the car.
My family dines here at least once a summer. Â Everyone is always happy with their entrees. Â I always get the lobster mac & cheese. Â The portion is so large, I get to take some home for tomorrow's lunch. Â I like that they have a dining room for adults only - for those who don't want to chance being stuck next to a cranky tot.
Highly recommended.
Completely underwhelmed by this restaurant. I was expecting it to be crowded and having a bit of a wait, but it was half full on a Saturday night. The interior felt a bit dated and shabby it wants to be upscale, but hawks merchandise with it's name on it that I can't imagine anyone would wear. The food was OK. The highly touted lobster macaroni and cheese used pasta that seemed to come out of a box and what seemed like very little lobster. The seared Ahi Tuna tasted like it came out of the fridge and onto the plate and not of the stove. It was as ice cold on the outside as it was on the inside. When it was sent back, the tuna was reheated and brought back, thus cooking the meat all they way though and essentially ruining it.
The server seemed stoned and inattentive and easily confused as to what his job should be.
My party had the liquid chocolate cake as a shared dish It was a six dollar cupcake with an ounce of ice cream and chocolate sauce.
I know this area has limited choices for dining...it's just to bad this is one of them.
Go here for the Lobster Mac & Cheese!
Steaks are great here too! If you have a boat, you can use the Center Harbor docks to pull up and have dinner. They have a shuttle which will pick you up and drive you back to Canoe! How cool is that? Is this place a bit pricey, sure, but if you have the mindset that you'll pay for a good meal, this is the place. Isn't as crowded for lunch - and the one downside is that they do not take reservations for a party under 5 (or 6?)...so I've always had to cross my fingers hoping I wouldn't have to wait an hour when I went there....
Lots of great dishes to choose from. If you can't get seated at The Woodshed, go here instead!
Short and Sweet for a good place to eat.
Mac and Cheese was very buttery and kinda sweet!
But, the really weird thing is how good it tasted the next day.
I'd go here if I wanted to go out for a nice meal.
The steaks are pretty good too, a lil pricey, but not bad.
Waitress was nice. Â Nothing crazy, but nice.
Four stars!
I crave Canoe. Â From 1,400 miles away. Â Their lobster mac and cheese is so basic but SO yummy. Â Their martinis are classic yet innovative. Â This is where my friends and I go for our reunion dinners when we get a chance. Â
It's probably one of my favorite restaurants on the lake. Â But watch out - parking can get scarce. Â I've had to park out on the street on more than one occasion.
