Breakfast for 3. Excellent pancakes. EXCELLENT. Gf enjoyed her corned beef hash with poached eggs and English muffin. Friend enjoyed her chesapeake omelet. I'm a little sad to say that this was the best meal of our stay. I love visiting the Eastern Shore, but so many of the restaurants are mediocre.
Review Source:We stopped in for lunch after visiting St. Michaels Winery and exploring the town a little bit. Â We chose it because, honestly, it was the first place we came to while walking, the menu looked OK, and that was enough. Â Â
Inside, the decor goes a little over the top with the faux finishes....the walls are painted to look like brick, the ceilings are painted to look like pressed tin. Â They do have some interesting things hanging from the walls and ceilings, and nice dark wood tables, with the one we chose being right in the window with lots of nice natural light. Â
Our server didn't waste any time getting to us to take our drink orders, and came back shortly after to take our food orders. Â My friend had fish & chips (kind of boring if you ask me, but apparently it's his "go to" meal when he sees it on the menu). Â I opted for the corned beef reuben (they also have a turkey version). Â He said his food was very good. Â The reuben was tasty, but the meat was a bit on the tough side, which made the sandwich hard to eat without looking like a caveperson. Â When we were finished, it took a little longer than I'd have liked to get our check, especially considering that we were the only people in the place at the time. Â Overall, it was OK, but not anything that I'd say I just have to go back to St. Michaels to experience again.
Grabbed a late lunch here after checking out the St. Michael's Winery. Â We asked the cashier where she recommended for some good local food and she led us to Carpenter Steret Saloon. Â While we walked down the street to the restaurant we scoped out alot of the menus of other restaurants along the way. Â The Carpenter Street Saloon was definitely on the cheaper end of some of those touristy and bistro type places.
Classic pub/tavern layout with booths and tables and a big bar on the main level. Â Booths were a little tattered but I think it fit in with the whole rustic, charm of it all. Â Server greeted us friendly and answered alot of questions my husband had about the menu. Â She also recommended various foods when we told her that it was our first time there. Â She recommended the seafood -- crab soup, crab dip, etc....My husband had the crab cake sandwich and it delicious. Â Very filling. Â You could definitely see the lumps of crab v. mostly filling. Â It came with chips. Â I had the chesapeake club sandwich -- Fried Rockfish topped with crab imperial and melted swiss cheese. Â It was melt-in-your mouth uh-mazing! The rockfish was cooked perfectly -- flaky crust on the outside and nice and moist on the inside -- and went great with the crab. Â We would definitely come back the next time we visit St. Michael's!
My wife and I were in town visiting on a Saturday and the owner of the little shop we were in overheard us discussing lunch plans. He recommended the "C-Street Saloon", as the locals call it. I'm glad we followed his advice. It wasn't very busy so the service was excellent. We liked the variety of the menu. My wife ordered a Cuban sandwich with sweet potato fries, I had a 1/2 sandwich (ham, turkey, provolone on wheat) and soup combo (crab). The crab soup was excellent, lots of crab, well-seasoned, nice mix of vegetables. The sweet potato fries were perfectly prepared. The prices were lower than the "Big Pickle" up the street, which is probably more tourist-oriented.
Review Source:Hey, it's a bar. Â And it's on the main drag in Saint Michaels. Â We were greeted in a friendly way, the seating was ample, the food was good, if not fancy and the waitress was friendly, attentive and efficient. Â What more can you ask for? Â
Oh yeah. Â Prices were plenty reasonable considering Saint Michaels is a bit of a tourist destination (although January is really the off-off-season).
I would definitely come here, again.
This was my first trip out to St. Michaels. The experience was AWESOME. We were trying to decide what to have for lunch and just stopped in front of Carpenter Street Saloon and saw the sign for Best Burgers in Town and just had to try it.
First off, the place is so nice. The brick painted walls made it look like real bricks, so real looking. Â The staff was attentive and helpful when it came to our orders.
We went with 2 friends from Baltimore who have frequented St. Michaels before. They mentioned the Chesapeake Burger, but were shocked to not see it in the menu. So we asked and they made it for us. For those who don't know what a Chesapeake Burger is, it's a hamburger, with a crab cake and cheese on it. OMG it was AWESOME. The crab was so fresh and yummy. Â My friends had sweet potatoes fries and shocked the waitress again when they asked for honey for there fries. Â My boyfriend ordered the onion rings and these were the best I've ever had.
Over all experience was outstanding. If they don't have the Chesapeake burger by the time you go, ask, they will be happy to make it for you.
I'm not super critical, in fact I'm fairly easily pleased, and I don't write reviews very often. However, my experience here did.
The food was reasonable and the prices fair for the menu.
The service however was appalling. I was getting used to some pretty good service here in the US, the tip based system seems to pay dividends.
Our server was abrupt to level of being rude. Her knowledge of local beers was poor and seemed to be irritated by being asked questions.
My wife had to ask for water twice. The glasses just dropped on the table. When we ordered one more beer, she got this wrong.
Not good enough.
Don't intend to take anything away from the others who gave it a FIVE ... but we only had lunch and maybe are a little pickier about our ratings.
Basically, we would recommend it without reservation. Â You should be able to find something you like on the very simple menu and have a drink to go with it. Â Onion rings - though not as good as Lobsta Land in Gloucester, MA - are very good. Â Maggie had the Gazpacho and half sandwich and enjoyed both to the end.
Didn't have the appetite or guts to try the Confusion Burger (with fried egg) ... maybe next time.
The lady bartender and "artist" was wonderful. Â She was really accommodating. Â She made all the yummy pizzas for my starving family (everything else was closed for the night at St. Michaels). Â We tried the pepproni, plain cheese and the supreme. Â All good. Â Even the leftovers were good the next morning. Â
The bartender drew lovely pictures on each pizza box. Â How great is that! Â The locals were fun and entertaining to chat with! Â I felt like I was on the set of Cheers. Â The St Michaels beer on tap was an excellent quench thirster while I waited for my pizzas. Â I wish I could have stayed longer and mingled with the others at the bar.
This place is a small tavern, with a dining room on the side, Â Apparently they have pool tables upstairs, but we did not venture beyond the bar.
WE stopped in for a pre-dinner drink on a weeknight in June. Â This was one of the few places that was doing any business that night, and we found out why.
We had one of the best bar experiences here in as long as we can remember, despite the fact that we were first timers...just a married couple who did not know anyone else when we went through the door.
Very friendly crowd, seemed like a mix of locals and whatever. Â Everyone was quick to smile or chat, something that is too often missing in bars with strong local flavor.
Excellent bartender who knew how to make everyone feel right at home.
Great jukebox, favoring music that is pleasing to baby boomers.
Reasonable prices, and you can eat at the bar.
We will go back often.
Carpenter Street is another St. Michaels, and Eastern Shore, icon. At least for me, this is one of the places I think of first and go to first when i swing through the area. The food has always been as great as the service.
I'm partial to breakfast and Sunday brunch there. They know how to cook scrapple to perfection, make a perfect pancake and serve cream-chipped-beef on toast!
Also, I do not believe you can get a better burger anywhere in Talbot County.
