Me and my boyfriend were traveling from Yosemite to redding and Lodi was where we decided to get some dinner. We saw this place and had an unusual but good experience.
We walked in to a nearly empty restaurant despite it being around 6:30. The staff was positive and took our order right away. We had our food almost immediately and it was good. The cheese they use in their burritos is delicious.
But it was just so quiet in there! So strange. The staff attended to us and cleaned things but otherwise they seemed like they didn't have much to do. Plus the building is huge! It could seat 250 people!
Strange but good. The salsa has a lot of cilantro in it.
Usually this place is great. Been in here a few times but mostly we just take our food to go. Last night we wanted to dine in and unfortunately our experience was less then satisfactory. We sit down and I ordered a Corona  my mom had a margarita and my brother being underage had a sprite. We also ordered waters but maybe she didn't hear us. The lady brings us our drinks. No lime for my corona (never even asked if I wanted one) and my moms margarita had VERY little salt around the rim. She was also disappointed in the quality and taste of the drink, especially since they are usually quite delicious. Our food comes out and still no waters. Our server only talked to us twice. Once to get our orders and once to give us our check. We were sitting right next to the kitchen so she was walking past us the entire time. But she never asked us how our food was, our drinks, if we needed anything? Nothing! A man (who I've seen their before.. Possibly an owner?) was bussing a table. He saw that we needed assistance and we acquired our waters and extra napkins from him. Other then that no one even looked at us again until our server dropped off the check. They really were not busy. I don't know why she looked so irritated. The only reason I even left a tip was because the food was delicious and just because one person doesn't do their job right it shouldn't mess with the people who do. We will be back but will probably only take our food to go from now on.
Review Source:Went there with the family tonight specifically for the homemade tortillas. I've been known to order a batch for takeout and then ration them out over the next week. When the tortillas were brought out I immedeatley realized they were just store bought. When the waitress came back by I asked her if they had changed the way they made the tortillas. She said they were frome a package. Too bad. The homemade tortillas were soooo good and the only thing that set them apart from every other Mexican restaurant in town. Pleeeeeeaaaase bring back those homemade tortillas!!!!!!!!!!!! They do still make flour tortilla chips but again, they are made from store bought tortillas and not nearly as good as the ones made from their homemade tortillas. Not sure we will be back.
Review Source:This place used to be wonderful, and the tortillas were the best in town. Sadly, I will never return after tonight. I went here with some friends for a quick dinner and immediately after sitting down, I noticed the tables were dirty. Chips and salsa was watery and stale. Tortillas were clearly store bought. I had ordered a chicken enchilada lunch that is served with rice and beans. I always ask for red sauce on the side because they put too much sauce and it plagues my plate. When we got our meals, I was given green sauce. Asked the waitress for red sauce, again. She returned with more green sauce, my friend then asked more clearly for red sauce, NOT green, she ended up bringing out salsa. Pretty sure she didn't speak much English. My enchilada was sauce less. All of our meals were bland! The owner looking man gave us attitude the entire time; anytime we asked for something he was bothered by it. I never had such terrible service!
Review Source:What happened to the homemade tortillas? Â Finally came back to give one of my old favorite restaurants another chance, only to be disappointed once again. Food marginally improved to just avg. from the last time and was served store bought flour tortillas (appeared to be the raw looking Guerrero flour tortillas in the mexican isle of any grocery store). Guacamole was not guacamole but a few slices of avocado. Service is okay, but not enough to improve from a 1friend star.
Review Source:The hand made tortillas are truly second to none. Aside from that you really shouldn't have high expectations. The main issue here is service. The past 4-5 times I have been here have been nothing short of terrible. In short: wait staff disappears for 15 minutes at a time meaning it can take as long as 30 minutes just to get your order placed. Once you do get your order in it can easily take 45 minutes for 3-4 entrees to come and over an hour for large groups. The upside is that if you can coax them into bringing more tortillas every so often you'll be set!
In truth Casa Mexicana deserves one star however their tortillas carry a full star on their own. I sincerely hope they make some changes soon so that I can actually endure a return trip.
My first time to try this place out. I was very impressed with the food!!! Â I had the chicken fajitas. Most places make them very bland & boring. They put carrots and zucchini, bell peppers, onions, and seasonings cook it all together. They put all of it including the seasoning on the 2 tortillas and serve huge homemade tortillas, rice and beans. I haven't found another place that puts the carrots and zucchini in there fajitas. I'm a big fan. Thank you, Casa Mexicana!
Review Source:Pretty good food, usually have the carnitas burrito. They have four chips mixed in with the corn...nice touch. Food and salsa is good but what keeps this from being four stars for me is we have had mixed success with service. Had them sneak a charge in on the ticket then point to the small print. that's okay, i just subtracted it from the tip. need to be up front, it works out much better in the end. (see my review of El Rosal or Velvet Grill, they did the same thing but their food is not as good)
Review Source:This is more of a 3.5 in my book but I gave it 4 stars because the Handmade tortillas are a meal in themselves. Â I like the food - nothing fancy but just good comfortable standard mexican fare. Â We go whenever we want mexican and don't want to gamble on some place new that is an unknown factor!
Review Source:Hmmm not good, not even ok. Â I couldn't eat my meal, just the rice. I had two people recommend this restaurant and was very optimistic about trying it out. Â The first part of my test for a good Mexican restaurant are the chips and salsa - theirs were not good, boring salsa and a mix of flour and corn chips....bleh, oil tasted like it hadn't been changed in a while. Â I ordered chile verde my guy ordered chicken mole which tasted nothing like mole. Â I wouldn't recommend it to anyone or go back. Â The flour tortillas looked wonderful but weren't.....it almost tasted like they used hydrogenated oil instead of using all lard.
Review Source:I have to agree...wonderful handmade tortillas I could have sat and eaten those all night long.
The service was actually not bad at all. We had a large group and based on the other reviews written, I figured that service would suck. But, it actually was not bad at all for as large of a group that we had, a friday night at dinner rush time.
I tried the chimichanga dinner. Rice & beans were actually really good. Very rarely do I like the mass produced rice at mexican restaurants. The salsa was very bland though and there was no hot sauce on any of the tables...it desperately needed something.
The chimichanga's were good, the chicken inside was a little bland, guess I am used to my husband's cooking, so it is hard to really have other mexican food knowing how good it can be.
All in all, not a bad place. I would go back.
My Favorite Mexican Restaurant in Lodi. I am not a big fan of beans and rice, however theirs is the Bomb. Also, their Fajitas are some of the best i have ever tried. They offer value based family meals to go, which include: Beans, Rice, Yummy Tortillas, Chips and Salsa. Great Family run atmosphere!
Review Source:If you want really good, authentic tamales (pork) then come pick them up here. Â They are really meaty and the masa is perfect. Â For a dozen to take home it's only $15. Â What a great price! Â Take some rice home with it and refried beans and bring it to a party and they will love it! Â They also make their own chips for the table and their Chilequiles is also a good plate! Â The place is huge since it turns into a nightclub at night but sit on the right side when you walk through the front door and you'll be fine. Â Muy bien. Â Hasta Luego Casa Mexicana!! Gracias!
Review Source:Just finished one of the worst Mexican meals ever. Â My wife bought us a take home chile relleno box meal and it was truly sub-par. Â The main entree was almost unrecognizable and tasteless, along with huge chunks of beef. Â The taco was bland and simply stuffed with iceberg lettuce. Â
As far the tortillas, I do not understand what other respondents are saying about them. Â First, they were huge! Â The size of dinner plates and rather unmanageable. Â Second, they were doughy and undercooked.
My wife said that there were no diners in the restaurant....on a Friday night. Â What does that suggest? Â I am unsure what it is about Lodi, but, at least from our point of view, finding a decent meal is rather difficult.
Came here for dinner last night with a group of people. I have never heard of this place before and never knew it was near my old high school! It was not busy at all. They have music playing on a tv near the front of the restaurant. I wasn't too sure if it was for karaoke because no one was singing but that's what a friend of mine told me. I was told they have live music and a DJ at times too.
We sat down and they brought out our water, free chips and salsa! I ordered a number 8, which is a Chimichanga, this includes 2 deep fried mini burritos (chicken, beef, pork or veggies), rice, avocado, sour cream, and lettuce. It was good but I probably would have chosen something else other than beef for my chimichanga. It was a little too much for me. I was satisfied though. I could not finish my meal so I ended up taking it home.
Try it!
Best handmade tortillas around!
I discovered this place when I lived in Lodi and was instantly impressed with their chips (some flour, made with their handmade tortillas) and their "extra hot" salsa that they said was made with chile de arbol. Their prices are reasonable and have great cheese enchiladas, tamales, and refried beans. I miss being so close to this joint but had to give my props!
Casa has the best chips in the world; the flour chips are the best, made from their delicious homemade tortillas.
All of their food is fantastic, though. I like the enchiladas, but my family goes for the fajitas every time, and the burritos are a favorite of several friends. They can go a little overboard with the guacamole on the soft tacos, though.
Unlike Porfi's (also in Lodi), Casa Mexicana IS frequented by Hispanics. Â If you're not Hispanic, you will be a minority in this establishment.
Chili Relleno, Beef Taco, Pork Tamale, Machaca: Just average.
They've had this sale for quite awhile now: 12 Pork Tamales for $12... pretty good, not much meat though.
On Friday and Saturday nights, the front rooms of Casa Mexicana transforms itself a nightclub with space for dancing with live music!
I'd recommend driving ten more miles south to Nena's if you're interested in GOOD Mexican food.
