AKA "Cheesy Lardy" as my family calls it & for good reason.
I've been to other Celia's in the Bay Area & I think this is one of the better quality locations compared to some of the other ones...not necessarily the most "authentic" Mexican food in the area that you can find but still good for Mexican food in SF Bay Area.
FIRST OFF, They have a good Happy Hour. Strong margaritas in several different flavors for around 5$. Or if you are feeling extra thirsty go for a margarita pitcher to share for 22$ (gets you about ~6). Appetizers are anywhere from 2$-7$ depending what you get. My friends & I love it, especially since we're tequila kind of girls.
Dinner:
All you can eat chips & homemade salsa (yum). I love their weekly specials and usually stick to that menu...favorites on that are Sunday fajita nights & Thursday night carne asada. Some of my other favorites are the chile rellenos, chicken mole & crab enchiladas. Come hungry because it is likely that whatever you order will be a HUGE portion of food! It can seem like a pricey menu but I think you get your money's worth..
I love Celia's
It is pricey, but the food is yummy.
However, I have to tell you that after my visit today, I'm a little thrown.
The food was off, the manager was rude, and even the waitress was just blah.
The main thing that got to me though?
I had to use the restroom, and the door was wide open. So, I walk in, only to realize that there was a man working in the larger stall. I walk back out and hope he'll be done soon.
I go back about 10 minutes later and the man is still in there. I ask one waiter to see if the man can step out, and he gets the manager. The manager then tells me that no, I'll have to wait until he is done. There was no sign up saying that there was a male worker in there, no warning, and he was standing on a ladder with easy visual access to the stall beside him.
Luckily, the painter heard me and he offered to step out.
Even though the manager wouldn't even bother to ask him to leave.
Rude!
I recently just moved to the bay area from Chicago and this is definitely my new Mexican restaurant!
I've ordered takeout and dined in and both were great.
The service is awesome.
Drinks a fairly priced. They do have special every week, which is pretty nice.
The only problem I ever had which isn't their fault is I ordered hard shell tacos for takeout and by the time I got them home they were soggy. I should have known better but they were still delicious.
To put it simply, the bad reviewers of this place are crazy! I love this mexican joint. Â The staff is so friendly, the food is delicious, you are given an endless supply of chips and salsa without evening asking or finishing the bowl, the shredded beef enchiladas are covered in cheesy, saucy goodness.... I could go on and on. Â
It is delicious!
I can't believe the bad reviews for this place. Â My husband and
I love, love the mexican food here. Â The beans and rice are delicious. Â My husband always get the cancun platter. Â It is enough for two people so you better come hungry. Â I always order the shredded beef enchiladas and have never been disappointed. Â The prices are a little steep, but that's the case everywhere these days.
Do not, I repeat, do not order food to go. Â When I ordered fajitas I got home and found that they didn't put tortillas in the bag! Â How lame is that? Â I also had to ask for chips. Â I think their food is way overpriced for the poor quality. Â I hate to say this, but even Chevy's is better and even they're pretty bad.
Review Source:Celias has been our favorite mexican joint for sometime, but i think they have either gone under new ownership or a change of management within the last two years. Â The food has really gone down hill and the prices up hill. Â I suspect alot of possible can food being used instead of the traditional home made fresh food we want to expect. Â It also seems like the parking has gotten worse, the last time we went we parked on a side street about 1/4 mile away. Â We will be looking for a new mexican restaurant for sure.
Review Source:This is by far our favorite mexican restaurant on the peninsula! This location (on Peninsula Avenue in San Mateo) is always consistently amazing! We've been here over thirty times in the last couple years and every time it's been spectacular! We only had one instance of some burned fajitas, which was fixed immediately. They have great margaritas and my favorite dish is the Polla de Crema (sauteed chunks of chicken in a creamy sour cream sauce) with rice and beans. The classics are great too (enchilada, tostada's, etc.). If you want good sit down mexican this is the place to go!! I have had some inconsistent experiences at the Celia's off of Highway 92 in San Mateo - the food just tastes different every time we've been there. So we stick to the one on Peninsula Avenue or the one in Menlo Park on El Camino.
Review Source:not sure why the average (stars) is so high. Â this is a sit down mexican that, well, i'm not sure how they stay open. Â i suggest staying away from almost everything esp the refried beans. Â i think the lard could kill a whale. Â the happy hour, buy a drink get a free app, is good for a group and you can sit in the cantina (you can get loud), but i'm not sure if you'd want to eat the apps. Â deep fried this or lard that. Â with so many authentic places, this would be last on my list. Â as a matter of fact - if anyone suggested going there, i would nicely try to talk them out of it. Â heck, i think their margaritas are made with mr. and mrs t. Â yuck.
Review Source:Usually I do a pretty detailed review but this was an excellent Mexican restaurant with excellent food, standard fare so I really can't say that much new or interesting other than, I hope this is the Celia's off of 92 between 101 and 280.
If you are the one, I loved it. Great chips and salsa. Huge portions of food, I got the combo plate and was stuffed to the point where I had to rest after I ate so I could get in the car to drive home. The people I was with were Mexican and took me here because they loved it so much. Thanks!
Great parking, fine service with nice happy employees. They kept asking us if everything was good and alright. It was.
Too bad it is so far away from San Jose or I would go here more often. Celia's has two big thumbs up from me and if you are in this area and hungry I recomend you stop here and eat. It's real good food.
