The Port Vixen was amazing I'd get another bottle next time I'm there. service was slow on a busy night and the dessert chocolates were very skimpy. I think we only got 5 pieces for 2 people and it was $10? something overpriced plus when one fell on the floor they didn't offer to give us another piece :(
Review Source:I was invited by a very close girlfriend to a wine tasting on a Friday night about 3 months ago. I am hooked! LOVE it. I enjoy their Saturdays wine classes, and the 4 monthly wine tasting events I have attended. I will go by myself, and just enjoy it & meet new people. I also went to the Lunch Bunch networking meeting held last Thursday of the month. It was great, and I received such great business and referrals. This place is by far my favorite in Katy!
Review Source:Upon arriving at this place, i thought, "what the heck, what an odd location for a wine place." However, once inside, i was pleasantly surprised. Nice ambiance, friendly staff, and best of all, no waiting in line for a table! (maybe because I was there at 4pm..on a saturday)
Ordered two bottles of wine: ($20-25)
Queens of heart: savory, flavorful, delicate, light and subtle.
Trio Rosso (produced onsite): concentrated, has more depth & richness, well-balanced aftertaste.
Ordered three plates: ($10-20)
Hummus and pita: mediocre. Nothing memorable.
Grilled beef tenderloin: love the tomatoes, beef could be more tender.
Artisan meat and cheese plate: love the cranberries (looks like raisins), the expresso/lavender cheddar has a strong aftertaste, but goes well with the wine.
This place gets a solid 4 for their live music entertainment. Thanks to Sarah and Phoenix, my friends and I had a blast!
This place was great! Came across it when I was in Katy just looking for a good Happy Hour place. Â Walked it the atmosphere is cute and perfect if you are looking for a quiet place to chat over some wine. Â My friend and I ordered wine off their menu and they did not have it in stock so she gave us a wine was was even better. Amber, the bar tender was fabulous! She was nice friendly, fun and helpful. Â My friend and I will definitely be back!
Review Source:My boyfriend and I just happened to stumble across this hidden gem on a date night. The first thing we noticed was the great ambiance the place had. Small, quaint and great place to actually talk to some one while enjoying your wine. Our waitress was very informative and helped us pick out some great tasting wines. I was in the mood for sweet wines and she knew exactly what was good to order.
Being that my boyfriend loves to ask questions, we found out that they make their own wine. We went during Christmas time and they make a holiday wine. It was fabulous! Our only regret was not buying a bottle of it that night because when we went back two weeks later, they had sold out of the holiday wine bottles.
Overall, this place is a great little hidden gem to check out on a date night, where you do have to yell at the person next to you, just to have a conversation.
I saw a Groupon for this place and had no idea it was here. It's in a strip center in the back so you have to look for the sign or know that it's back there. It looks like nothing special on the outside, but when you walk in it's like stepping into a scene in Italy (or how I would imagine Italy looks, as I haven't been there yet!)
Anyway, the atmosphere is lovely. I love all the different little seating areas, in addition to the main room. This would be a great place for a romantic date, or a group event with friends. The decor is warm and inviting, and you could hear music in the background but it never overpowered our conversation.
The wine selections were varied and plentiful, and we loved that the Cellar Door had their own wines. We tried several different flights and enjoyed most of them. The appetizers (artisan meat and cheese plate) was really good, and went well with our wines. The service was attentive and knowledgable, but a tad bit on the slow side when it came to receiving our appetizers.
My friends and I will definitely come back here. It's great that Katy has a few nice wine bars now so we don't have to drive into Houston,
My girlfriend and I were wine club members and were once a week patrons to this place.  Great prices and decent atmosphere although it's always pretty dead there.  Good for Katy, TX i should mention.  Owners are friendly and make you feel at home.  The live music is mediocre at best but it's free so i won't complain.  My problem with this place is that over time (2 months) we started getting really crappy service.  I always tipped minimum 15% and up to 25% for good service.  The last server (skinny blonde) really pissed me off by refusing to allow me to have one of my monthly, pre-paid bottles at the table when i had been doing it over the course of 2 months with other servers and was told prior to signing up I could drink my monthly bottles at the table if i  wanted.  She was extremely rude when my girlfriend and I explained to her our situation and she had the audacity to leave our table with an attitude.  This same waitress (don't know her name) is EXTREMELY dry as far as personality and because of her continued attitude and overall neglect I canceled my wine membership and now go to the Tasting Room in Houston.  They will not get my business again and I'd be suprised if this place stays in business another 6 months.
Review Source:I have been here a few times and have enjoyed it every time. They have an open mic night and the music is usually good. Great selection of wines. What I liked most that it wasn't loud and overpowering like most bars. It is a smaller place where you can just relax, have a glass of wine, and still be able to hear the person across from you.
Review Source:We initially checked this place out due to a Groupon for a wine tasting class. Â The owner and his wife have advanced degrees that perfectly compliment the chemistry involved in making good wines. Their in-house Pinot Noir(sp) is very nice, especially with the right cheeses. The atmosphere for a casual evening is good, but the live music is...different sometimes. For a glass of wine and some light snacks, we enjoyed it. Â So why did I rate a 1 star..Ok, here goes.
We were happy enough with the atmosphere and the friendly owner and the waitress we talked to, we decided to book TCD as our venue for our 10th anniversary celebration. I called and they said $200, plus they would make custom labels for our event..It was a done deal.A few days before our event we realized that there really hadn't been any communication with us regarding the pending party in their banquit room. I decided to drop by and ended up talking to the GM, Frankie. Since I hadn't received any info, I decided to pepper him with questions. Â We know that this isn't really a foodie kind of place, really just good wines and some VERY light snacks to compliment the wines. What I didn't expect were the blase' answers I got, the contradicting answers, poor communication, and lack of attention to details.Since we were bringing lots of food, we asked if they would have any plates or serving platters. The answer was no on the plates, and maybe a couple platters. Â I was told that there would be live music that night so I asked if we could dance to it, solid yes to that one. Â I stated that since my wife would more than likely be showing up before me, possibly with 2 small children, she would need some help setting up. Â We'd more than likely move tables and chairs. Â He said he could probably get someone to help, but we'd most likely have to tip that person.. I didn't like that answer since I was already paying for the room, would be paying for a case, maybe two, of their wine. Â All in all, he just didn't seem to be able to give solid answers. Â If this is something they do all the time, I expected better, and more motivated communication, plus a solid knowledge of the in's/outs of renting their room. I got the feeling we were going to have to provide everything and this is what I communicated to my wife. I then decided that I wanted to contact the event coordinator, Alana, about what exactly comes with the $200 I was spending for the room. Â I also relayed the information I had received from the GM to which she flat contradicted what he had told me. Â She then worked out the details with my wife, suggested some wine selections, and copied me on a email indicating to have plates ready, X color linens (table cloths and napkins), utinsels, and finally the wine list. Â The GM responded acknowledging these facts.
Game Day:
My wife shows up at 6:40 with tons of food. Â She was really suprised to find absolutley nothing ready and waiting for us. Â My wife starts asking if the event coordinator would be here and she's told that Alana will show up around 6:15 to which my wife said it was already 6:40. Whe got a blank stare and the girl went off to take care of something else. Â My guests were supposed to arrive at 7pm. Â My wife had to ask a couple different times for some help setting things up. Â I would have thought that the room would have at least the plates, utinsles, linens, wine glasses, and wine bottles staged and ready to be setup at least 30 minutes before. Â I showed up at 7:10 with both kids, and see my GUESTS helping to move tables, and set up the room. This was a shocker for me. The wait staff didn't even begin moving wine glasses into the room until a couple minutes after I showed up, aprox. 7:20, One of my guests asked me when they'd start serving wine. The answer was that she shouldn't have had to ask. The snafu with the tables and chairs is my fault, but the lack of staged items was unacceptable. At 7:30 more guests showed up. Wine was just getting poored. Around this time my wife asked about the music for the evening and if we could dance to it. Â The answer, another contradiction, was no. Different answer than before. This is when I noticed that the room was getting warm. I looked at the thermostats on the wall and the temp in the room was 80. Â WHAT? I asked the girl serving the wine about the A/C and cooling the room. Â Her response was that they've had someone out a couple different times and they haven't been able to fix it.
Ok-Now I'm mad. My first thought was that they knew about the A/C problem before my event, they knew, per the contract, that I was expecting around 40 people. They didn't have the presence of mind to communicate this to me? The Coordinator said she never told anyone she was coming up, and they the AC was news to her. Â I informed her that the staff knows about the issue.
Bottom line-Bad Experience. Poor Attention to detail/Communication, lots of crossed wires. Â Lots of improvement needed in this part of the biz. Â Sorry, its the truth.
I've been a member of the Cellar Door now almost 7 months and things just keep getting better.  Last night they did a tasting of Spanish wines and it turned out really good.  They have a lot of events throughout the week that are really cool as well and worth stopping by.  The staff is awesome and really know their wines.  If you are not sure what you want  ask Frankie if there is anything new or something different and they usually have something.  The wine list just keeps getting better and better.  If you don't see something that you like, ask them if they have it first.  They keep adding a lot of new wines and the wine list might not be recently updated.  Check them out on FB for upcoming events.  I'm telling you, you won't want to miss the dinners that they put together with the wines.  Looking forward to the next tasting that they will have and will be back very soon!
Review Source:Our waitress was great and very knowledgeable about wines!  This place is cute and cozy.  They also have  in-house wines (they're also a winery) and some food available, but I would recommend ordering from restaurants around the area (get it delivered).  We tried the Artisan Cheese plate, not bad.
They also have live entertainment which was pleasant. Â We will def be back!
My bf and I stumbled upon The Cellar Door during our drive in from Austin. Â We were hungry (and thirsty) and looking for somewhere that's not a chain.
We were immediately pleased, as the atmosphere is cozy and inviting. Â The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Â We tried several wines by the glass, each was under $10, and delicious. Â The cheese plate and artisan pizzas were also very satisfying.
I'd definitely recommend this place for anybody who is passing through or lives in Katy. Â It's a unique find for the area, and I really hope it's able to succeed.
Very nice place to meet up with friends and have a glass of wine. Â The atmosphere is inviting and comfortable and includes couches and comfy chairs. Â They have live entertainment, but not sure what days, so check out their website in advance. Â Don't let the exterior of the building fool you, the interior is sure to please. Â Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
Review Source:I can't say enough good things about this place. Â It is one of my regular hangouts...I go for the atmosphere and the friendly staff as much as I go for the wine. Â It's my own little spot of "Cheers" right here in Katy. Â My friends and I enjoy getting together and catching up with each other. Â This place is perfect as we can have good conversations without having to shout to make ourselves heard. Â Frankie is always there to welcome us. Â He offers suggestions about wine choices and allows us to experience something different that we might not have tried without his help. Â Can you tell I like the place?
Review Source:If I actually was a partker in alcoholic beverages, then I would have a higher rating I am sure! Â They really have meals/foods and portions to compliment wine. Â The food items are, from my understanding, perfect for alcohol, but, as aforementioned, since I do not drink, the food items were just okay. Â Nice atmosphere.
Review Source:I took my wife there this past weekend as part of her birthday day. it was early so we were the only ones in there for the most part. Â it was a very cozy place and my wife felt very relaxed there. Â the wines were also very good. Â I met one of the owners and he couldnt had been nicer. Â Look forward to going there again. Â I just wish the wines were not so expensive, but I was in a wine bar not a sports bar.
Review Source:I I love this place. Â The decor is excellent and you cannot find a friendlier and more professional staff. Â They have a very wide selection of wines and the bartenders have a very expansive knowledge of the industry. Â I can always go there after work for happy and hour and can strike up a friendly conversation with a stranger and even some of the workers. Â I read Karl K's review below and I think he must have gone somewhere else and got confused. Â This place rocks!!!!!
Review Source:Nice space, good entertainment, poor wine selection. After tasting many awful wines, my husband and I ordered a bottle of something we thought was just ok. Â Our server stated that this was probably the most drinkable wine they carried. Â I guess this was a clue! We are going to try a new place called Another Round. Â It opened in the same place where the Wine Next Door used to be in La Centerra.
Review Source:The red wine list is decent, but has a lot that is not listed on it, so ask your waiter for recommendations. However, they're sadly lacking on any good whites until you hit the Cakebread (at $75/bottle) range. The whites that they have are along the lines of "dixie cup wines" -- very sweet and simple. While that's probably appropriate for Katy, I wouldn't drive in from downtown for it.
The waiters are excellent and will quickly and easily match your tastes. I'd actually rate the waitstaff 5 stars if I could...
One of the features of the place is their in house "TCD" wines, which are VERY young and not at all complicated. They won't please anyone who is looking for more than a single layer of flavor in a wine. The rest of the lower price tier selection is mostly bottles you'd find at Spec's for between $7-15/bottle, marked up to $22-$30 for table service, which is very reasonable.
The cheese plate featured cheeses and meats that seemed to mostly be sourced from the deli counter at the local supermarket. With specialty food stores in the area that stock excellent foreign cheese for bargain basement prices, I would have expected the owner to source some nice slices of exotic sausages (or even just some local summer sausage), some Argentinian Romano (3.50/lb at Phoneican), and  include a few other interesting tastes. Instead, we got cubes of Black Forest Ham, Muenster, pepperoni, and (cheap) cheddar that couldn't be layered on a cracker to combine their flavors.
I rated it three stars because despite the decent experience, we won't be back. We go to wine bars for new things; the experience that the Cellar Door offers can more than easily be replicated in our own living room. It's a decent experience for those who are new to drinking wine, but not anything those familiar with wine and wine bars and who are looking for new experiences should go out of their way for.
I co-host a monthly networking event called Katy Lunch Bunch that has recently relocated our event this Katy gem. (Catered by Chef Michael Cortez.)
Additionally this is my new favorite place in Katy to relax and unwind with a great glass of truly locally produced wine. That's right! The wine is made on-site. The Cellar Door's menu also features some of the managements favorite labels from other vineyards. Â My personal favorite is the Dolce Vino a blackberry infused sweet wine, or the hearty red Malbec. I recently joined their monthly Wine Club too.
I feel like I've become part of the family since Ron, Andy, Don, Maria, Caroline, et al. always greet me with a big smile (and high-five from Ron). I was scheduled to speak at an evening business event held in the private event room, but had a dead car battery. When I called The Cellar Door to try to reach a representative from the organization -- Caroline just volunteered to come pick me up. Â Talk about customer service!
Great wine bar on Mason Road in Katy. Â It's right next door to Mantra Indian Restaurant, which is pretty good btw.
My girlfriends and I went this weekend, and it was fairly busy for such a new establishment. The atmosphere was nice, there was live music, and the place was well decorated. I liked the woodwork, the granite top tables, and comfortable seating. The servers were friendly and prompt. They have a main area near the bar with lots of tables, an area with couches, and a large room for big parties or banquets.
They are a winery, so they make their own stuff. I tried two wines - the chocolate wine and the Cabernet Sauvignon. If you like sweet dessert wines, the you probably like the chocolate wine. That's definitely a sipping wine in my opinion. My friend and I shared a bottle of the Cabernet, and I was pleasantly surprised. Â Because I drink cabs ALL the time, and mostly in the 30 to 70 dollar price range, I was skeptical as to whether or not I'd like their wines. My husband regularly calls me a "wine snob," and he's happy to drink my rejects. But you know what? I really liked it, and I would recommend it. I may even send a bottle to my sister for her evaluation, since she likes Cabernet too.
I was told that they have bottling and labeling parties, which could be fun. There weren't any going on while I was there, so I can't provide details. I will say that their banquet room is large, and would hold a lot of people. They had artists from Barcelona paint a mural on the wall of the the banquet room, and it's beautiful. That's pretty cool, and who doesn't appreciate original art?
They have a nifty little gift section that was cute. They had bottle stoppers, wine themed T-shirts, cork holders and quite a few other wine-related gifts.
Live music is on Friday and Saturday nights. Their grand opening will be September 23rd, so that should be a fun night.
As for suggestions, I think they should - 1) make their own T-shirts to add to the gift section, and 2) be sure to include their street address on all business cards and promos. The private wine tasting card I received didn't have the street address on it. Althought it wasn't a problem to look in up online, I think most people would appreciate having the information on the card. Great place, and I hope it does well. I'll be back!
